A science fiction writer named Hal Clement wrote a book called ‘Needle’ in 1950. The plot was completely different from The Hidden, but the premise was identical-an alien bounty hunter/cop chasing an alien criminal, and both inhabit human bodies. I’m not saying the writers of this movie copied it, but I always wondered if they knew of it. It’s a great book (almost all of his stories are excellent). If you’re a fan of The Hidden, you owe it to yourself to check out Needle, if you can find a copy.

This film constantly comes up in so bad it’s good film circles but by and large it doesn’t deserve it. It’s extraordinarily competent with some great over the top, weird Terminator inspired moments. I watch so much of this crap on my own or through other channels that I genuinely thought you guys had already watched this!? The cast alone elevates this crazy film, you got Kyle Maclachlan (Twin Peaks, Dune 84) Ed ORoss, Michael Nouri (Flashdance), Claudia Christian from Babylon 5 (the stripper that gets possessed by the alien) Lin Shaye (from EVERYTHING, thanks to her brother Robert Shaye the head of New Line Cinema in the 90s) and goddamn legend Danny Trejo fresh outta IRL prison! oMG! YES!!! I also watched Falling down (1992) and I was like 12yo, so the reoccurring nightmare I had went like the car chase with the cops chasing and shooting him, the car crashes near a burger joint and he gets out, cops keep shooting at him and then that's the nightmare.
Maybe you might know this nightmare if it ever was a movie. I was being taken back from school in the school bus, I was the last one off and all of a sudden the bus goes out of control and it bursts into flames at the back of the bus. So I run up to the front to tell the driver, but I heard laughing and when he turned around it was a skull, like Skeletor laughing, and we crashed and well you know the rest. Maybe that was a movie too? LOL! I'm a kid of the 80's, born year of E.T. and Tron.

This is a legitimately good movie in fact, just a great cult classic. IMDB rated this film so high because the story is pretty original even if it is a little "Body Snatcher-esque". The acting was fine, the action sequences and stunts were awesome and the SFX were decent. What I liked the most was that the movie didn't hold back on anything. It was very raw with its content and straight forward. It lets the audience know what it is right out of the gate. Although I do agree that it dips after the first 45 minutes and is slow at times but it just felt very pragmatic in its approach. Great movie and a great reaction.

I was *obsessed* with Twin Peaks when it first aired in 1990 (okay, I still am), and rented The Hidden because Kyle MacLachlan was in it. It's eerie how much his role here prefigures his Peaks role in some respects. Great actor, should have been a much bigger star.

I'm surprised you guys haven't seen this movie before. I guess you can say it's a "hidden" gem... haha... I hate myself.
I had the impression Kyle MacLachlan's character was a different type of alien than the body snatching slug he was chasing. It would help explain the ergonomic design of the alien weapon he was using and why he was working with humans to catch it. Maybe the sheetrock/slug melted was designed for human hands because his character was disguised as a human? Being a different alien type also explains the weird life energy he gives to the wounded human cop at the end since we didn't see the antagonist alien use any similar special powers.
Alright I'm definitely putting more thought into this than the script writers likely intended, I'm done! Thanks for the video. It was hilarious.

I remember when this came out in the '80's, and unfortunately, it competed against several "blockbuster" films, so it never got the notoriety that it deserves - and unless you were around back then, it's one of the best films that you've never heard of.
Fun fact: about 4 years ago, they had a screening of this in downtown L.A., and Claudia Christian was not only invited, she also announced online that it was happening - and I was her date! She did a short q&a on stage before it started, and it was her first time seeing it since a private screening for cast & crew before release, and she couldn't stop blushing when her scenes started - and the audience, mostly younger people than she and I, couldn't believe what they were seeing, and they were going crazy from start to finish. Claudia got a standing ovation when it was over.
I have to admit that the majority of special effects were top notch, especially considering this is pre-cgi, and the music - some heavy metal, but mostly punk, well...I have most of Concrete Blonde's albums, so needless to say I went nuts when I heard them on the soundtrack.

We're still friends. (We kinda knew each other before the event, actually)

      @@JasonBrant I forgot to mention:
The exotic car dealership was a real dealership. I forget the owner's name now, but I saw a thing about him a few years ago: he either passed away, or went broke, while developing his own exotic car several years after this film was made. It wasn't the Vector (I knew that guy, too: met him at his facility in Wilmington, CA.), it was something else.
The 308 that was destroyed, if I recall Claudia's story correctly, WAS a real 308 - but it was a car that had previously been totaled, and the studio bought what was left of it either from an insurance company, or a police auction (I forget). It was still a driver, so they just made it look pretty enough for the camera.
I laugh about this, because two years later "War Of The Roses" was released, and in the film, a Morgan is destroyed by a monster truck: problem was, the production company didn't know that the car was rented from a private party - and that owner didn't know the car would be destroyed! Before this happened there was some care taken with expensive or rare cars, and I'm guessing that somebody may have thought it was "just" a kit car (how many people have ever heard of a Morgan, other than people that know British cars?) There was a big lawsuit over that one(!), and it wasn't until that, that production companies really began to pay attention to where vehicles were coming from!
Oh - and this was William Boyet's last on-screen performance.

Pretty sure that the light was not a healing beam, it was the good alien moving into the partner's dead body. So the good alien ends the film in his partner’s body, pretending to be him. But the amish girl recognizes it is not really her father, but is okay with it. The partner died, but the good alien now has a new family to replace the one he lost.
