- Years before the Commentary Tracks on commercial DVDs but popular on marketed laserdiscs at the time, this rerun from May 9, 1985, features various video asides by Dave taped 3 1/2 years later and aired on December 30, 1988. From the A&E syndicated broadcast June 1, 1992.
Guests were Bob Hope, Bill Maher, and Brandon Gray-Devitt. Plus Viewer Mail and Crushing Things with an 80-Ton Hydraulic Press remote.

Every way imaginable his show was simultaneously decades ahead of its time, a classic, and timeless. Like Tom Snyder
One of the things that made Dave such an innovator was that he was not JUST a comic who got a talk show. He was a broadcaster even before he was a stand-up comedian.
And, while many people on television wanted to preserve some kind of mystique, Dave wanted to pull back the curtain on how TV worked so the viewer could see that it wasn't magic...it was just a lot of hard-working people. He was willing to experiment with the format, and he was so successful at it because he knew it like the back of his hand.
For example, this episode showed you can make any place a TV studio with the right lighting. There's nothing magical about a studio. He had previously done an episode inside a plane, so why not an airport?
@Brandon S I think that is just his low self esteem coming out. He is extremely funny if you get what he's doing. He certainly made Johnny Carson laugh when he did his stand-up on "The Tonight Show."

The writers' strike re-run run of 1988 was delightful. I remember a Letterman about the last of the repeat shows: "We're not only sick of them, we're out of them!" I do remember this episode (particularly the 'boring' observation about the Hope golf annals) and thought it represented the best of TV production improvisation - annotating an entire show three years after the fact was inspired.
Just to be clear -- the Dave Watches the Rerun show was months after the strike had ended.
That stacks up with where I was at the time. Thanks.

It's quite amusing watching his old shows and seeing how much of the stuff he did was so ahead of time. "TH-cam before TH-cam". Even his overly critized Oscars performance. I think that would be considered a masterpiece nowdays.

@@nickandthecrisis IDK. Maybe it was a change in direction of the production or a change in writers? By 1990 everyone knew Carson was going to retire and the who Letterman/Leno thing was going on.

Every time Bill Maher appears on TV Dave Letterman should be superimposed over him talking about nothing in particular.

I forgot A&E reran "Late Night".
This rerun package of _Late Night with David Letterman_ aired on A&E *without* Letterman's authorization. In first-run _Late Night_ episodes that aired on NBC during the time the rerun package was airing on A&E, Letterman would make remarks about how the older repeats would devalue the newer episodes airing at 12:30 a.m. ET every night.
I'm watching this on what was December 30th 1988 at the same time it aired, 12:30pm- and it's a rerun. So it's a rerun of a rerun I'm watching at the same time it first run but in the year 2022. Makes ya think

Speaking of the Yeah! song, two of my favorite moments from the show were when Paul performed it and they showed the sheet music for it, which had a 1940's looking cover with Paul on it, and the sheet music consisted entirely of one quarter note with a percussion head on a tiny staff, with the lyric, "Yeah!" underneath. Absolutely hilarious. As a musician I especially appreciated that. And the second favorite was when Paul sang 'Avalanche!'. "Avalanche! Avalanche! You cuckoo crazy, avalanche! That icy crumble could start to tumble...". I looked for these episodes a while ago but to no avail. Do you have them, or are they already posted?
The "Avalanche" song's from January 26, 1984. The "Yeah!" sheet music's from July 11, 1985 (just a fleeting shot of the note, so I'll look for another moment). Haven't put either up yet.

Now I remember, and confirmed: the sheet music is featured prominently on page vi in the Late Night book.
Don Giller cool. I remember seeing the book and looking at it at a bookstore when it was released, but for some reason I didn't buy it. But yeah, the 'Yeah!' sheet music appeared on the show and was one of the funniest and most clever gags I've ever seen. Thanks for sharing the broadcast date - It's one of my favorites moments of the show, along with "They pelted us with rocks and garbage" (of course) and the deadpan camera man or recording engineer with the machine gun demonstrating how to use it "spray the room with a gentle side to side motion" - hilarious then, a time when such a thing was considered absurd, not tragically commonplace.

as I've said before, I wonder what led to the total blistering comments made by dave about Bob Hopes appearance.
I thought the comments were funny. Hope was self-important and his stories were boring. Dave celebrates the ordinary man. Edit: You have to admit, the golf stories were better alongside some hydraulic press action.
How is that possible? They tape the show and broadcast it later so how would Murphy see the interview unless SNL got a live feed of 6A?
Letterman always made comments like that about guests. Self-deprecating comments about golf stories aren't particularly cruel.
Yeah- I recall Howard Stern occasionally commented on-air about the in-progress Letterman tapings when he did afternoons at WNBC and have read the story about how "SNL" rehearsals/ blocking sessions were on the circuit at one point- which captured Garrett Morris' meltdown during a 1980 rehearsal with Kirk Douglas
Letterman wasn't the only one who had commented less-than-favorably on Hope's schtick at that point- recall Dave Thomas' impression of him on "SCTV"/ the Ed Grimley cartoon and the aforementioned Howard Stern as having somewhat biting takes on him

Great to see Dave dissing Bob Hope. Flag-waving, Republican toady, who for some strange reason was comedy royalty for many years. He would have been nothing without the writers who supplied the jokes. By himself, he was nothing.
JCO2002 apparently Kubrick had some dirt on hope. in eyes wide shut the guy wearing mask with long chin was said to represent Bob hope.
You could say that about most comedians, I agree Hope wasn't all he was cracked up to be
Letterman himself was a Democrat shill, transforming into a bitter propagandist for Obama and crew in his later years. That, of course, made him like nearly every act in mainstream entertainment, which pretends to value "diversity" (but, of course, "diversity" somehow means allegiance to Democrat-Corporate Talking Points).
I suppose that's irony on at least two counts.

You don't get it. It almost didn't matter what he said. Just the fact that he was adding his own acerbic commentary over a rerun in 1988 was absurd and wonderful. This was even before MST3K did it with bad movies.
This was Dave stepping outside of the show and making observations about himself. Mind blowing at the time.
I watched it when it aired and thought it was funny.
