I’m an artist, and I think most of us become one because we lack something and we want to reach people with its representation in art. Art, for me, is a desperate call for attention. Even though I realize it shouldn’t be like that, it’s a reality for those who believe they can’t communicate with words effectively.

"Art is a selective re-creation of reality according to an artist’s metaphysical value-judgments. Man’s profound need of art lies in the fact that his cognitive faculty is conceptual, i.e., that he acquires knowledge by means of abstractions, and needs the power to bring his widest metaphysical abstractions into his immediate, perceptual awareness. Art fulfills this need: by means of a selective re-creation, it concretizes man’s fundamental view of himself and of existence. It tells man, in effect, which aspects of his experience are to be regarded as essential, significant, important. In this sense, art teaches man how to use his consciousness. It conditions or stylizes man’s consciousness by conveying to him a certain way of looking at existence." ~ Romantic Manifesto, Ayn Rand

    • @mughat
      @mughat 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Ayn Rand and Aristotle got it right. The purpose of art is to show what could be and ought to be (To inspire man). Not to show what is. That is for historians to record.

In all honesty, if I were forced to choose, I choose Monet’s Poppies, but none of them inspire any particular feelings of calm. I prefer the Tonalism of artists such as George Inness & Whistler. When I look at their work, for example, I find myself often exhaling after inhaling deeply, w/o consciously being aware (initially) I was doing it. I soon realized the soothing feelings & subsequent relaxation I felt was from viewing the paintings. I also find the brilliant work from the original Artists, particularly Bierstadt, Church, & Moran deeply engaging & relaxing. And for a maritime seascape, in my humble opinion, there is none better than Russian master, Ivan Aivazovsky.
I guess my point is I think this is too subjective, too personal to suggest these seven paintings are the most calming. If they are calming for some people that’s wonderful, but I can’t be the only one to disagree.

I would have never guessed these interpretations of these paintings. For me I just see the painting. I think it is very subjective to what a piece of Art conveys, as long as the artists didn't explicitly state the intention.

I saw Sugimoto's ocean pictures at an exhibit in San Francisco a decade ago. I was amazed at the reaction, a sense of serene peace, that overcame me. Much the same for Monet paintings, Adams photos, Serra sculptures and many, many other works of art. Very good art has a way of emptying the mind of stress and taking the quiet viewer into another realm, beyond self. That is why I usually go to museums alone.

Hey! I am Raajalakshmi and I wanted say that, the School of Life is working amazing and it makes me think and feel better.
Now I think/guess, I have a problem or an issue that, I cannot be happy or optimistic with what I have, rather I focus on what might I could have or what I don't have.
I have never given a treat for myself like eating chocolate or appreciated me for any of my stepping stone, for example: if I won a contest or finished my project before the deadline, I feel it's not enough or it could be better; this leads to unhappiness and unsatisfaction.
Even if people around me feels great for what I have done is amazing work, I personally feel; no it's not even good. I don't know, it's over self- criticizing or self hatred or missing tile syndrome.
If you could put any video on this topic with tips to overcome, it would be helpful. Thanks once again and good luck for your future endeavours. 🤗🙏👍💕✨

Wow, I never saw art as the deep and highly emotional works that they are. Honestly until now I saw art as a waste of time. Thanks for the change is perspective 🙏

It's not the most vibrant or expressive piece of work but, there's a quiet calm and comfort to it (atleast for me)

I appreciate your commentary on art, Alan, and your analyses are engaging. With the exception of the Japanese bowls, all these pictures nominated by you as "most calming" were drab; muted to the 9th degree of dullness; and thoroughly depressive. Now, I know you're from the U.K. and these tones are everyday fair, what with your weather and all, but surely even you must recognise this in your selection of 'art'? One almost wonders, at such a time as this lockdown overkill, if you're trying to employ some kind of negative saturation psychology...where you're so deep in the dark woods that the only way out is to keep on going. Even so, the art you've chosen to feature is more deadening than anything. True calm still has a pulse, you know? ….

Don’t go for modern art much but after he explained the big black wall, it made sense.

I don't know how people interperate art like this... I mean, if I look at a picture of leafless white trees with a dark background, I won't start thinking about the fact that death itself is impersonal and natural... but that's just me, not sure if I just have an unimaginative mind :3

Excellent video. Even so, it's those existential truths that are traumatizing to the human being that makes it impossible for me to feel calm for any extended period of time.
You do have a calming voice though.
