I like the Catlabs areocolor, i shoot a lot a foliage, the film was designed for shooting through canopy's as a military surveillance tool. so it renders greens sharper than other colors
Ooh yay. Stumbled upon Catlabs X Film 100 35mm film while visiting an LA film store. Supposedly the same as Santacolor which is respooled Aerocolor IV. (The store had three variants of the same thing under different brands which are the ones you mention). I’ve been shooting Santacolor for a while now almost exclusively. The Catlabs is loaded in my MP right now. :] Aerocolor IV is super sensitive to light. Usually the first shots are affected for exposing it to sun while initially loading the rolls. If you’re getting light leaks in your roll, could be your camera has some light coming in and since it’s super sensitive to light, that’s why OR the canister you tried wasn’t properly sealed. Either way that sucks.
My guess is the light leaks on the Catlabs roll were due to "fat rolling", which is to say there was a bit of slack in the take up spool causing it to be too loose on the spool which can cause light leaks. Had some very similar leaks on a roll of Gold 200 in my Mamiya 645 due to just that!
I shot Aerocolor all summer and loved it. I posted a video a week ago saying it’s the best color neg ever made. I also love Ektar but the films have significant differences in color representation and latitude. Catlabs does a really nice job with the repackage, very clean.
I enjoy the CatLab Color 100 very much, and I guest Aerocolor in general. However in contrary to an ortho film, the CatLab 320 (B&W) is an extended IR sensitivity aero surveillance film, I had shot it at 320 and 160, but both rolls came out very under exposed even pushed in development; maybe it doesn't play well with XTol. Despite the lack of negative density, I do really like how it handle skin tones.
It looks you had roll problems on the color film. Either it slipped when loading and then it just was not rolled tight enough, probably took out the film in light also.
happy new year. I have picked up a roll of Foma Ortho myself. Chose to shoot the Phoenix first(which I really enjoyed...after doing my home scans) Ortho is so good and really need to shoot it in 120. 400 ortho is awesome and can't wait to shoot a roll myself. Bye.
@@BadFlashes No hurry: the weather here in northern Indiana flipped the switch to "brrrr!" over the holidays and I slow down quite a bit when the weather falls below freezing and snow settles in for the season. Those 15 sheets will last a month, easy, and if push comes to shove I have a couple of boxes of 4x5. I'll get around to placing an order as soon as my fingers thaw out.
It seems pretty well established that Catlabs Color 100 is just another of the several repackaged Kodak Aerocolor IV versions which are being hawked these days. It seems to have very fine grain and to be fairly average in terms of color saturation and contrast, more than Portra, less than Ektar. As it is designed as a surveillance film, I suspect that its absolute color reproduction accuracy is less than others, but it looks fine to me. It's being priced from $12 to $16 per 35mm roll. It looks like the CatLabs version should be preferred, as its cartridges are DX coded while some others are not, and they sell direct for the lowest prices compared to others. Also, CatLabs is cutting and repackaging for 120 film rolls, where most others are not. On the other hand, the film lacks a color mask, so printing to photo paper is off the table, but scanning should be okay once you get your scanner technique recalibrated to not compensate for the C-41 mask. Cheap lab scanning may be a headache for the same reason. Of course, at current prices, this film offers no economic benefits to compensate for having to screw around with it.
I love this guys closet of mystery. What does it have in it? Ok Cameras obviously. Maybe the ark of the covenant? Maybe but Indian at 170 years old will come for it. Maybe its his TH-cam Gold plaque? Someday! Dirty Socks? For sure! Lets see you collection man! Come on!!!!
Two countries separated by the same language. It's aerocolo(u)r not aircolor, like aeroplane (French) not airplane. Ilford do a good 35mm Ortho 80 for that midday lith effect.
This is off the back of me wasting ten minutes searching for Aircolor III when I should have been looking for Aerocolour IV as a recommendation from another colonial TH-camr 😒 I guess you can't help where you were born, Happy New Year from Scotland.@@BadFlashes
Maybe the light leaks are because the film has a polyester base, which is more prone to light piping. Although gold in 120 also has a polyester base, so maybe I’m speaking outa my ass.
Caleb do you want a roll or two of ORWO NP27, made in the GDR (German Democratic Republic) AKA the wrong side of "Checkpoint Charlie"? Soviet vibes, baby.. I snagged 30 metres of it recently. Went out of date in 1992. Internet says it should shoot fine at 200 - 320ish. It's 400 box. My first "test shoot" (of my cat) is in the patterson tank now - I'm being fully sensible and trying this weird film in an unproven (brand new second hand) camera (it's ok, I used wool to replace the light seals! Should be good, right?) and because good things come in threes i'm trying to 'stand' develop it in a new way for the first time as well. Anyway, assuming it's not a totally dead reel, would you like some stateside? Consider it a wedding gift from the UK...? Edited to add - supposedly it's "SuperPanChromatic" so.. IR sensitive?
As someone who has shot film since the 70's the film canister has always served a dual purpose
🚀🚀🚀🚀🚀 always

If you like Aerocolor IV, you’d like Reflx Lab Pro 100 since it’s also Aerocolor IV, but in 220 format.
Ahhhh gotcha
I don’t shoot with film cameras, I’m here for the humor. Nice photos.❤
Maybe just maybe I can get you into it 😝
noiceeee. love the new style on the logo.
New year new me!!!! lol
Love your intros-don’t listen to the grumps! Fun, upbeat photography vids are few and far between and your production skills are killer.
Ah thanks so glad you like :)
The only problem with Ilford Ortho is the low ISO, love that Foma makes it in 400 now. Caleb, congrats on your wedding btw!
Ahhhhh thanks 🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
And right!!!!! 400 is awesome 🤩
Excellent video. I went to Freestylephoto on my way to Zankou chicken. Freestyle was closed. It was a Saturday.
Oh yeah, bummer they’re closed on the weekends… I’m glad you enjoyed the video though
Ortho 400 slaps hardest if you take portraits in open shade. I personally love this film.
That’s a good rec!

The camera was good. I shot a ton with it. But I did cross my mind lol
@@BadFlashes sounds like your canister wasn't sealed up nicely then. camera looks solid. can't be that. aerocolor iv is such a wimp to sunlight.
That color film was really nice!
it wasnt all that bad :)
Great vid ! Whats that skylight app called ?:)
it's called skylight lol
and thanks!!!!!!! :)
Specifically it’s called “Skylight Solar Widgets”. There are a whole chunk of “Skylight” apps to confuse the hell out of life !
Skylight Forecast, apparently not available for Android.

Yeah… this color catlabs is the only one I can do. The black and white doesn’t behave

I think it has something to do with the rolling process. I remember loading it all fine :)

The Foma Ortho looks dope...but it does look like it tends to get a little muddy in the blacks though
OH I didnt notice that 😳 ... but it does look sexy
