Perfection in movie making is how I see this movie, the casting, script, performances, music, editing, and direction,. Not everything that comes out of Hollywood is dirty.

This song is a nod by the brothers to the 1955 film The Night of the Hunter, a film the boys keep referencing and it's hardly surprising.

Ozarks...I can taste catfish and smell smoking ham drifting on a rainy wet morning...putting wild flowers on Daddy's grave...wishing he was still here to advise me what to do with this sad, tragic mess I'm caught up in...when all that's good in life is taken from you, God is always, always there....always...

You can find the story of how the hymn “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms” came to be by googling it. It was written by a guy back in 1887 and based on Deuteronomy 33:27 - “The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms”. The author of the hymn said he had received letters from two of his former pupils saying that their wives had died. When he wrote back he was inspired by the phrase in Deuteronomy. I think what is so enduring and powerful about this hymn is that it is a reminder of assurance in the midst of our darkest hour. The everlasting arms are there in even in death. A hymn is a song or poem of praise, usually religious and usually to God. This particular hymn certainly has a melancholy undertone even though the lyrics are not obviously sombre. Yet this old hymn’s words are a source of strength and hope to all who believe that our Heavenly Father is indeed there with the infinite strength of his loving and everlasting arms right to death and beyond.

She wasn't 14, she was 12 when they started shooting and turned 13 on set. Very tall for her age.
She beat 15k other hopefuls for the part, and had been taking acting lessons since she was six.
They were all brilliant, and one of the best films I've ever seen - except when Rooster shoots Little Blackie.
Her acting was well beyond her years.
Great display of old school discipline too! 😊
    The music is very moving.

I refuse to sanction politicians; it refuse to vote; I refuse to sanction the use of force to impose my beliefs, views, opinions or prejudices on others.

"... by the time Bagby rode us to Fort Smith my hand had turned black. I was not awake when I lost the arm. I later learned that Mr. LeBoeuf recovered fully. When the marshals found him he was searching the pines below the rock ledge for Tom Chaney's body. He found it and took it back to San Saba for the reward. It was well earned. Anyway, a woman with brains and a frank tongue and one sleeve pinned up and an invalid mother to care for is not widely sought after. I never did see Mr. LeBoeuf again but if he is yet alive I would be pleased to hear from him. I judge he would be in his seventies now and nearer eighty than seventy. I expect some of the starch has gone out of that cowlick.
Time just gets away from us."

John Wayne always plays John Wayne. From Hollywood's glory days. Look at all the stars from that time - typecast again and again, the public swallowed it and they won Oscars.. The likes of the Coen brothers would have gone hungry. I've never seen John Wayne's True Grit and I'm not going to. Read the 'Mattie' in the JW film earned herself a reputation.

That actor who played Mattie put in a solid performance. The title refers to Mattie and not Rooster I would say.

I grew up in the Winding Stairs Mountains near Wilburton. Although the story is fiction the fact that there was little actual law in Eastern Oklahoma following the Civil War is true. Robbers Cave, just north of Wilburton, is so named because it was a virtual fortress for a multitude of outlaws. The area was the stomping grounds for Belle Starr a distant relative of mine.

@Flora Post, She does for true. Lots of people are sick at heart as they listen to the commie/socialist, hate mongering politicians, especially the Democrats, as they spew their foul, demeaning and immoral rubbish. Lots of people want relief, respite, from the back biting, hate mongering. I've always liked this tune and Iris Dement does a beautiful rendition. Thanks for the fine tribute and observation. Good on ya mate.

I grew up in the Rural Ozarks in the mid '60s and this was a favorite of all the old women in the hills (dad was a minister). Iris Demint nails the vocals, although her voice is almost a dead ringer for Loretta Lynn (and this is not a criticism). I'm a crusty old agnostic, but I admit the performance wrung a tear or two. I do love gospel, particularly 2 or 4 part, but Iris will do on this one.

Makes me think of my life in Texas in the early 1950's. Almost all the people went to church on Sunday and these old songs were quite common. Unfortunately, that culture is all but about gone now and is being replaced with foreigners and people from other states flooding in. It was good while it lasted.

    • @robertjarrett1632

You might want to read the book; Charles Portis is a master of Southern/Southwestern dialect kind of a latterday Mark Twain. But Maddie is a straight-arrow woman who believes in the Law, in the the Bible and in Justice, in this world(during the movie, when she is young. The afterword is quite different.)
The irony, of course, is that the hymn is more about justice or comfort in the afterlife, which is kind of the point of the final scene of the movie after Maddie has survived and is old. My explanation is not doing the multiple ironies justice, but you probably can get the picture.
I grew up in rural Missouri in the '60s and this was a very popular hymn in the Southern Appalachias. Choosing this was almost spectacularly on point for the film and for Maddie's character. Admittedly, I am quite familiar with the hymn, although I hadn't heard it for years until the movie came out. I could sing it for you now without looking at the verses, since I heard it a lot from age 5 to 11.
