I recently purchased a 2024 Rebel 500 SE and put in so far 1,000 miles. I love this bike so much. It's the best of both world. Really nice bike for city riding and I am able to keep up in highway 75 - 80 mph with no problem

I bought the Rebel 500 as my first bike in April and outgrew it in 2 months. I'm now on a GSX 8R (800 cc). It's perfect for me! However, I think it was good that I started on the 500!

If you can afford it, absolutely get the 1100. As a beginner, I started in rain mode for a bit, went to standard, then sport mode. I felt this approach allowed me to develop my skills and grow into the bike without it scaring the daylights out of me.
The 1100 is a forever bike - I can only see myself getting rid of it to get a new one

I bought a 2024 Rebel 500 SE a few months ago. It is my first bike and I love it. After riding it for a few months, I wish I would have gone for the 1100. The 500, for me, is a little light on the highway.

Safe to say that as a beginner rider the bike has humbled me a few times (within reason) riding the twisties with my group that are on sport bikes. Overall 10/10 starter bike, I absolutely love this machine and recommend it for folks looking for a modern-vintage cruiser

My first 'Street legal/Daily Commuter' was the Rebel 250. It was/is a *GREAT* 'Beginners' bike,' and so *VERY* forgiving (Weight/balance)! I went from that, to my Goldwing 1100 (And THAT was a gigantic change in handling/operation, but I lived!) ;-)

You nailed it focusing on the Rebels in city riding. You have die hard motor heads who rack up 10k miles a year. But you routinely see 20yr old bikes on Facebook marketplace with only 3k to 5k miles. My experience is having had at least 12-15 bikes, from Suzuki, Yamaha and Harley’s. I bought the Rebel 500 because it is cheap and easy to service. Buying the non ABS is less money and easier to bleed brakes every two years. Insurance is cheap, and the OEM saddlebags are $350. It takes me 5 min to put on a half helmet and run down to Walmart . I keep my big ass Harley ready for cruising on weekends, but a 500 is so inexpensive doe an everyday around town bike. The 1100 is more in insurance and not worth the extra money over a 500 for a 2nd bike (unless it is also a bike for the wife to ride with you on weekends)

If I was to buy one it would be the 1100. I would put a new adult rider on a 500 as they would grow out of the 300 too fast. I would put a teenaged new rider on the 300.

I've never agreed that 1100 plus cc motorcycles can't be just fine beginner bikes for adults. I actually think a new adult rider would outgrow the 500 just as quickly. Personally I started out on a 1200 cc Triumph Speedmaster and loved it. I do wholeheartedly agree with putting a teenager on a small displacement bike though lol, they make too many impulsive decisions

Times have changed, I remember when the Honda rebel was a complete starter bike “only” they were fun but complete dogs, reliable but tiny. Most people kept them 3 months so you could snatch them up all day on the rip. Now they make an 1100 version with EFI nuts , not a fan of the looks and lines but those 1100’s are a blast not really my speed or style but if your knocking em you haven’t ridden one.

Brand new rider with an aversion to cruisers here. The Mrs bought us a project cruiser bike to get running again, and if I could sell it, I'd definitely go for the 500. I gotta be honest, the looks on that thing are pretty sweet -- even for this naked bike die hard. And, it's got enough where it counts while still being gentle enough for her to learn on.

  • @amerigo88

I had been riding cruisers and a KLR 650 for a couple years and then test rode a Rebel 1100 at a local Harley dealership. I was blown away with the combo of power, light weight and agile handling. It even had a slip-on muffler which gave it excellent sound. Sadly, I couldn't get a deal done.
If you want a Japanese Sportster with an air cooled, 950 CC vtwin, there is the Yamaha Bolt. Really like it and the fact that it can accept many cheap, plentiful HD Sportster EVO aftermarket parts, i found it buzzy at 75 mph and above though on a test ride.

1100 is nice, but at the cost (here in Canada, anyways) there are other bikes that may be more 'capable'. Also, especially for new riders, insurance cost difference from 500 to 1100 can be significant. The 300, however, is so underpowered and don't recommend to anyone unless you're looking for cheap in-city commuting.
I own the 2022 500 and it is perfect.
For those looking at sub-2020 models, I would spend more on anything 2020 and beyond, as lights are all LED and clutch is nicer on these models than on the 2019s. 2020+ also includes a gear indicator.

I just HAD to have the new Rebel 300 for my 40th bike {and eighth single} in '22. Loved the look of it and, with my history of thumpers from 250cc to 650cc, I thought I had a good idea of what to expect. This was important, as there was nothing to test ride and they were very scarce and virtually sold months in advance. So, after one year and 5000 miles, couldn't wait to get rid of it. An utterly useless motorcycle, a thumper COMPLETELY devoid of thump. Seriously. You don't buy a single to wind it up like a sewing machine. Even my XL250 Honda and my GN 400 Suzuki had SOME bottom end, but this thing? Zero. The seat is useless after twenty minutes. A $250 upgrade with more foam and gel pad extended that to an hour, but Honda should've put a decent seat on it for five grand. Seventy miles per gallon is fantastic, IF you like spending all afternoon rowing your way through the gearbox. Run, don't walk from that little Rebel.

A rebel 300 does 0-60 in 7.85 seconds. My BMW G310GS will do it in 6.2 seconds. I’m SHOCKED at how slow the Japanese cruisers of all brands are for their 300cc options. A KTM Duke 200 is exactly as fast as this Honda 300 at 100cc less. Why do they make cruisers slow? I’m closer to a Ninja 300 (5.6 average to my 6.2 compared to 6.2 vs 7.85) than I am to this Rebel 300?!?!? Thats Street vs Adventure vs Cruiser and the cruiser honestly slow.

Quick answer is none, there ar better bikes available for the price. I have had both 500 and 1100 and both are horribly uncomfortable bikes with ergonomics. If tht doesnt bother you then get one. Specially 1100 is a very uncomfortable bike. I just repalc3d it with a triumph 1200 scrambler, just cudnt take it anymore
