Flamethrower vs. Spider Trench

  • During WWII, spider trenches, bunkers dug into the jungle, provided battle cover for the Japanese. These holes were highly effective in protecting soldiers from most U.S. weapons... except one.

    My Dad fought in the Philippines during WW2. I remember him telling me that they also used the flamethrowers to flush out the Japanese soldiers hiding in caves. They would find an entrance to a cave with suspected Japanese soldiers in it and shoot the flamethrower in the entrance literally frying whatever was inside. He told me sometimes the poor Japanese soldiers would come running out of the cave completely on fire. He said it was awful, but he also said using the flamethrower beat having send troops into the cave to look for them.

      Well, trouble is, implementing the effects that make IRL flamethrowers so dangerous in a video game would make them extremely broken weapons. But yeah, vidya flamethrowers usually suck pretty badly. Short range, bad damage, and the enemies still charging at you full speed, despite being completely on fire. Probably the only such weapon I enjoy using is the heavy incinerator in Fallout, but then, that's more of a napalm launcher than a proper flamethrower (which also exists in the game, and predictably enough, it sucks). Funny thing is, FEAR 2 had a weapon that was almost exactly the same concept, and it was probably the single worst weapon in the entire game, it barely tickled enemies.

    • @mangalores-x_x
      @mangalores-x_x 9 ปีที่แล้ว +38

      sure it does. one was a fortification covered by sand and reinforced with logs and intentionally small firing holes, this thing is a hole covered with dry wood.
      It has nothing in common with each other to the point you can only conclude: Yes, a flame thrower throws flames! That could be handy for bunkers but we have none here so we randomly burn some wood over there.

      He actually held it correctly, at about a 45 degree angle. The idea is not to let it drip on your hands or on the system. Raising the flamethrower to a fixed 45 degree angle doesn't allow you to aim NOR does it stop the dripping. He had to turn the barrel 45 dg to the side so the dripping would not affect him. And he's shown doing that correctly.

      Ken Nolan nope if they got out of the trench they got shot plus the troops can't avoid the flames except a few circumstances

      Raziq Azrie Rohaimann no they could go lower into the spider trench that wasn't a accurate spider trench the could get into a situation where the wouldn't have to worry about flame but the carbon monoxide would kill you regardless

    • @paullytle246

      RollOnToVictory but the flame would only go so far before being extinguished by lack of oxygen and that same lack of oxygen kills the soldiers

    • @connorclemmons8698
      @connorclemmons8698 7 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      So if I'm running my ass around an open battlefield on fire, not getting shot or anything, I'm going to die from the carbon monoxide produced by the flames? You've got that somewhat wrong. If you're in an enclosed area like a building or a very compact spider hole/trench, you might die from the CO, but not in an open area. Your statement about the flames dying due to a lack of oxygen is the same even if you were to close the lid on a burning candle. But so long as their is oxygen and a source of fuel, the flames will keep going. Also, carbon monoxide is not heavier than air, so your statement about going deeper into the spider trench being useless is invalid because the CO doesn't go down to the ground. That's why during any fire inside a building, you want to stay low to the ground, because it's where the air is the most fresh and non-toxic.

    Do you know what the M-97 Flamethrower sounds like, Ernie? It roars like a
    dragon, a fiery god purging everything in it's path. Hold down the
    trigger and the "woosh" drowns out everything else, focus on the noise
    and you almost convince yourself you don't hear the screams. By the time
    the tank is empty, everything is over, even the men are quiet. There's
    nothing but the crackling of burning thatch.
    You see Ernie, it's not the noise that keeps me awake at night, it's the silence.

    The prerequisite is, that you have a flamethrower and are quicker than soldiers at detecting the spider trench than its residents are at detecting you. Since the flamethrower can only be used at short ranges, this method is essentially doomed to be ineffective against fortifications likewise to those.
