Your public library has great color laser printers and charges about 50 per copy. I have made many gelli prints using these copies. Edit your original to be as high contrast as you can without obliterating the details and you'll get better gelli prints.

Bless you! I have watched seven or eight videos trying to find out WHY the image transfer works. I didn’t understand until I watched this video, specifically 3:00 to 3:17, and found out that the toner was resisting the paint. Thank you thank you. I think that I can now do the image transfers.

Interesting. I've been using my color laser printer but with black and white. I have had to run the images through twice. I will try the color prints to see if that works better. The paint is always an issue for me. It seems to dry too fast. I end up pulling the paint back off the plate with the brayer. I use golden fluid.
Maybe try the Golden Open paint, it has a longer dry time 👍🏼 happy creating! 😘 cheers Froyle

I'm not sure, I haven't tried it. I think it will depend on how much ink is on the print to resist the paint on the plate. Go on and try it! You have nothing to loose! Cheers Froyle
Hello. I attempted pulling a print last night from a laser jet and a magazine. The first time the paint dried 😂 the second 3, 4 time the paint came off with the paper 😂. Clearly i need a lot less paint like next to nothing. I hope it works tonight 😂 Fingers crossed
Don’t give up! Your print copy is the most important good quality laser print then the amount of paint, not too much! Then a little practice & you’ll get there, cheers!

Ordinary dollar store tissue, but recently I have been using wet strength tissue & it is amazing! 😍👍🏼 cheers!
Ive watched another couple artists transferring using inkjet, and the paper you use makes a difference. It needs to be shiny (shiny copy paper or parchment) apparently. I'm going to give it a go and I'll report back.

Hi. Thanks for the great videos. I appreciate your tip about the light coating of paint. However, I’m having trouble getting the image to print from the Gelli print to my surface, paper or fabric. I can get the image from the laser print to the Gelli plate but then fail. Any suggestions? Thanks so much in advance.

I like your video but here is another ink jet question? I can transfer an ink jet print straight onto my gel plate without adding paint to the plate beforehand. Just straight onto the plate. But I can't seem to transfer from the gel plate to paper? I guess it still isn't going to work? I feel like it's halfway there. ??? Thanks for your time.
I haven’t tried that approach, you should be able to transfer the image from the plate to paper with a layer of paint? Or even gel medium 👍🏼 All the best with your creative adventures 😍 cheers

What if you print a high contrast black white image but using laser color print in (color) mode? That way it would achieve black by using all colors. More toner build up. Maybe.

Try them as colour laser print copies 👍🏼 always works for me! If you are using a home laser printer, try running the print copy through twice 😍 cheers
Okay, so when you're saying toner build-up you're referring to the topographical surface of your desired image right? You would want your image to be just slightly raised higher than the surrounding surface?
I don’t know about that! I mean the toner that is in the colour of the laser print 👍🏼

Sounds like the paint is being absorbed into your print copy? Is it a home laser printer? If so, try running the print through twice to build up the toner. If you are using a commercial laser copy, try a different shop. Print copies differ & you have to get the right one to get this technique to work. I have a local office shop that works but when I tried copies from online printing they failed! Your print copy is the most important part 👍🏼 happy creating! 😘 cheers Froyle
Just tried it for the first time and it was just like your first example. Acrylic paint didn't stay on the plate. I did use my laser printer to print a photo but only using black and white as I'm out of color ink in the printer. Is this the reason why? I also have heard of people using magazine pages, but I tried that and it didn't work also.
Yes it could be. The colour ink has the toner you need to make the transfer work 👍🏼 Magazines are very hit & miss, it must be high quality glossy magazine , cheers
Colour prints have about 4 times the density of black and white prints which may explain why it works better

I have to put my prints through photoshop apps (or even just on phone settings) to make the contrast higher.
From what I was experiencing, there cannot be shades of grey…or in other words, it’s not just that the laser print be black and white rather, it’s more about it has to have bold contrast to get the resist.
I know some artists pull prints w grey but that might be based on model of printer?
Anyways…just thought I’d follow up bc I know we are all here just trying to learn and help each other out ✨

I started gel printing a week ago. Found the perfect paper for me but I have some issues with my colors. It seems like they are to watery and habe a pearl effect. I think they a too cheap. So today I bought some new black color for the stencils and some medium that the colors work better on the plate. But now my laser prints dont work anymore and I really dont know why. Worked fine before just the ink was bad. Can someone help me out?
It is usually the print copy or too much paint! So look at these two areas, all the best, cheers
Does anyone here have a speedball gelli plate? I purchased one and to my surprise it says it is unfit for acrylic paint. Is that true? Has anyome encountered a problem with acrylics on speedball gelli plates?

This is the video I'm looking for. Thanks. But I can't say I was successful. I use magazine leaves, I choose a dark background, I pay attention to contrast, but I can never transfer all the paint to the paper. Paint can't dry that fast. Does the type of paper matter?
If the paint is drying too fast, then try Golden Open paints, they stay wet longer. The paper you print on doesn't matter, but the print copy is the most important part. Good quality colour laser print, cheers Froyle

I go to Warehouse Stationary to get my copies printed, I don’t know what laser printers are best. I do know that sometimes the home printers aren’t as good & you have to run the copy through twice to make it work, 😘 cheers!

Sorry, I know this sounds stupid, but Did you put glue under the images in the book? Or just on top and it sink into paper? Was it modpodge or glue?

all our prints were botched. the paint stuck to the paper i was trying to "copy". nothing left on the gel. used color laser prints but the paper just sucked up ALL the paint, all the time. i'm baffled.
You could be using too much paint? That will definitely cause the paper to suck up the paint, also your laser print copy might be the problem. Try getting them printed from a different source, try a different copy shop, hope that helps, cheers Froyle
Why won’t prints from my home laser printer transfer?

You can use any paper to pull the print. I use tissue, glassine or Japanese Calligraphy paper or rice paper. But you must have a good quality laser copy print for the transfer to work 👍🏼 cheers

They are on standard copy from an office shop. It will most probably be your print copy, must be a colour laser print, commercial printer is better than home printer 👍🏼 cheers!

Hi there, I made my own gelli pad according to a recipe that I found on TH-cam. I tried everything but I cannot transfer anything on it. The recipe is:
4 cups water
1 kg (3 1/2 cups) of glycerin
200g gelatine
I use Amsterdam, Liquitex Acrylic paints
Is the recipe for the plate perhaps wrong?
I so want to print but ghosh, I'm struggling

I don’t think it will be your gel plate, what are you using to print with? Is it a laser copy? Home laser printer or commercial one? This is the most important part 👍🏼 cheers
@@FroyleArt thanks for your response! I use newspaper, photos from magazines etc. What also happens is when I brush the paint onto my gelli pad, the paint comes off the gelli pad and ends back on my roller again. Sometimes it sticks to the gelli pad and other times not 😳
I have a laser printer and ran it through twice. It still did not work. I tried it with different papers too.
It sounds like there’s not enough toner in your print copy to resist the paint & make it stick to the plate, cheers

It will be your print copy, NOT YOU! Don’t give up! Magazines are very hit & miss, don’t bother! But try a different place to get your colour laser copy prints, this is the most important part. Happy creating! 😘 cheers!

What if I wanted to do a logo that's black and white? Would I just tell them, I want it color printed?

I'm excited. I've been trying to use my own artwork for cool prints but have not got it to pull the print that well. Thank you.
SOS! Boy have I got headaches.. I apply an even layer of acrylic paint via brayer to my gelli plate. Then I burnish a high contrast magazine picture onto the surface. I carefully remove the clipping and if I am lucky, the image transfers. I then apply a clean sheet of sketch paper and rub it smoothly over the surface. I remove the paper and....NOTHING! NADA! ZILCH! Little to no image transfers. The paint appears dried to the gelli plate and I do not wait long at all between the process. Okay, what am I doing wrong? Wait, don't get me started when I tried applying a second color after the first image rub down. I still get nothing! Wahhh
I do find magazine image transfers to be very hit & miss! That's why I prefer colour laser copies! Maybe you could try Golden Open paints if the paint is drying too fast? Cheers

sometimes ive got the feelimg, its about the plate itself. im still ot sure if some colours damages the surface, so its not giving away the color anymore
What kind of paper do you use to copy the image?
I’m using Japanese rice paper to pull the print with a colour laser copy 👍🏼 cheers
Sorry, I don't think I was clear, when you make the copy of the Unsplash image at the store with the Laser printer, what kind of paper do you copy the Unsplash image onto?
Is it a glossy or matte paper copy please?
It’s a standard paper copy but it is a little glossy from the toner in the ink. Ask for the best settings on standard paper 👍🏼 cheers!
