I just hope everyone remembers that Starn's ability always triggers and can hit his controller as well. So whenever you ping yourself for one using Talisman of Creativity or one of the painlands you will take 3 damage if he's one the table.
That's why you add a lifelink key word on him
Or don’t play those effects lol there is a way to not ping yourself
A lot of the red spells that summon the 1/1 pinging devils are also inexpensive and super good in this deck, you swing with then and whether they die or not you still get a bunch of triggers.
Also witty roastmaster paired with young pyromancer
I've had a Niv-Mizzet deck for over a decade, which is a 'tribute to Tim' type PING deck. I retooled it the day Ghyrson was spoiled, and he's the new Lord Tim.
Been wanting to make this kind of deck. Picked up the Tyranid deck and thought Ghryson didn't fit the rest of the deck, so I took him out, but wanted to make a deck around him.
You can swap out ghyrson starn for an ozolith in the swarmlord deck and make it even stronger
Aether Sting, Furious Assault, Honden of Infinite Rage, Feedback, and Lightning Cloud are a few good enchantments. Ophidian Eye, Sigil of Sleep, Arcane Teachings, Hermetic Study, and Psionic Gift are some good auras. Balduvian Trading Post is a potential land to include.
If you can afford it and aren't going the death touch route, charisma is a good card to help you steal whatever you can't kill with ghyrson

Talisman of Creativity is a nonbo in this deck because our Commander will burn us for 2 more when we tap it. A lightning bolt to the face every time we need red or blue seems bad.
That is a good point! I ended up keeping the Talisman in there since it still comes into play untapped and can tap for C without pain, and if you are desperate for one of the colors (or if your Commander has lifelink), you can still make use of it!
@@TheCommandersQuarters when I built Ghyrson Starn, I looked at so many suggestions that hit everyone or every creature and I definitely made my choices as one sided as possible because there are so many choices. Mine is not budget, though.
any suggestions on what to replace the talisman with? (ideally a budget card)
@@Tryaldar Good question! Personally I would keep it in, because it's basically a Fractured Powerstone+ which, but if you want to change it out and are okay with your mana rock coming into play tapped you could go with Star Compass, or if you want one that filters go with Prismatic Lens.
Starstorm is an even worse nonbo, since he dies regardless of what X is. Arc Lighning, Twin Bolt, or even Forked Bolt are better includes.
I brought a token focused version of this guy to a local game night last week and he is massively powerful. I wasn't sure how he would perform, but tokens were easy to generate in these colors (goblins, devils, birds, faeries, and my favorite thopters) and with cards like hellrider/raid bombardment/cavalcade of calamity, putting the table away on turn 5-7 was a breeze.

I have been building this deck weeks before warhammer was released. Incl. Shadowspear. Its another lifelink thing that also removes hexproof/indestructible that can halt a lot of the decks strat. Also, go nuts with 1/1 tokens! Give them double strike for added benefit of procs during first strike, and a bunch of enchantments that deal 1 damage for each attacking creature. Damage can REALLY add up. And easy to make them unblockable. Tremor impact and outpost seige for damage of entering/leaving battlefield. Otherwise, glad we are on same page for most things
I've been waiting for this deck tech ever since the Cmdr was announced and you have not disappointed.
I've never heard of Chandra's incinerator before but it is absolutely the powerhouse of the deck imo. If I'm reading it correctoy, it can turn ping that would normally be 3 damage in this deck into 10 damage. First it copies the initial 1 and 2 damage (6), then the commander sees that 1 damage and shoots (8) and then that shot is copied by the incinerator again (10)

If you're looking to upgrade this list, removing any of the self-damage effects like Talisman or that one tap-pinger that damages each player, as well as stuff like mana-barb effects that will just make you the archenemy on sight, are good calls. I'm personally running more non-permanents right now, like Forked Bolt, Electrolyze, and Arc Lighning to compensate. Also cut Starstorm like immediately, its such a major nonbo for this deck bc it will just kill your commander unless you have something like a darksteel plate on. In my experience he's pretty close to kill-on-sight in my pod so I already have a hard enough time sticking and recasting him as is, and I don't need spells that'll kill him from my side of the board.

Hey one card that should be an auto include in this deck is the card Charisma. for uuu you cast a creature aura that when that creature deals combat to another creature you gain control of it. its great and budget friendly
5-10 dollars on this channel aren't budget friendly but for an upgrade definitely a great pick up. I wish they would give this card a reprint
Can confirm. A boardwipe is good, a boardwipe that hits my opponents for 3 each is better, a boardwipe that hits my opponents for 3 each and lets me steal everything that lives through the lightning bolt barrage is even better.
Raid bombardment, Hellrider, and Niv-Mizzet are the first things that come to mind for me. And you better not forget to ad a Chandra's Spitfire to swing for a million in the air!
Throw in Tetsuko Umezawa, Fugitve to make your 1-power creatures unblockable
Niv mizzet / psychosis crawler are a secondary focus on my deck, one side is pinging, the other is card draw to ping
I'm surprised you didn't mention the infinite combo with Curiosity effects and Niv Mizzet, which turns this already awesome powerful deck into one that can end the game at any time with a 2 card combo that you have multiple copies of!

I think that's why this guy is so expensive, unique with many builds

I am upgrading the deck to an otter prowess storm deck and got a Japanese etched foil Grapeshot to celebrate. With Ral from Bloomburrow and MH3 I have been loving the new brew
I personally like to run cards that can copy my commander and some key value creatures
Using sakashima/spark double on ghyrson makes everything 5 damage instead of 3
Or I could use a phantasmal image on a storm kiln artist or even a young pyromancer for big value
This deck has options go crazy with the Brews lads
I guess if you wanted to go in a combat focused build with 1 power creatures, then Tetsuko Umezawa could be fun, and I'm looking forward to playing with Ghyrson and Pyrohemia.

Always likes Cosmotronic Wave too. Not amazing at sorcery for four, but let’s you swing in to finish off a player. Yeah there’s better, but I still like it.

I mean tgis is the kinda deck that depending on the power your friends are willing to play with will give them great amounts of scorn
I have included devil tokens that deal 1 damage on death with a few good sac outlets.
I looked into that. They are the best 1/1 tokens for this in a deck that can abuse the heck out of it. But theres so few things that efficiently generate them :/

I also think that Torbran, Thane Of Red Fell is a really good budget upgrade to this deck, because Torbran does 2 damage when Ghyrson triggers, and usually does 2 when the original pinger does damage, because they're usually red. It usually ends up doing 4 extra damage per ping, so 1 damage would turn into 7 with Ghyrson and Torbran out. Chandra, Awakened Inferno is also a strong card in this deck, but it's around 15-20 dollars. It is pretty hard to get onto the field, but considering the amount of mana rocks in here, it shouldn't be that hard to do it. If you can get it out and keep it alive for a few turns it just wins for you. Even if it dies before you can get a second turn with it, the emblems are still doing damage on each opponents turn. I also really like Exalted Flamer Of Tzeentch, but it is around the same price as the Chandra I previously mentioned. Some more cards I like with this commander are Cavalcade Of Calamity, Burning Earth, Flame Fusillade, Defiler Of Instinct, Ophidian Eye, Niv-Mizzet Parun, and Grafted Exoskeleton. There are many other cards, but that would make this to long, as if it wasn't already. Also, why did you read this entire comment.

Torbran actually increases the damage done by all your 1 damage sources and ends ups turning off ghyrsons power in a majority of situations.

I built a deck around this commander, super similar to this. Thought it was a meme at first but quickly realised it was op as all hell
I built one, curiosity and sigil of sleep are terrifying with him
Chanda's incinerator plus commander is kinda terrifying, more so than the video did it justice.
Oppent takes 1 noncombat damage. Commander burns opponent for 2. CI burns a creature for 1 and 2, but commander then burns the creature for an additional 2.
Every time you deal 1 damage to the opponent, a creature they control takes 5.
I used this commander/idea for my own deck and reimagined it :) thanks for this great idea! It's the first commander deck I built and am very glad I did! It's annoying for sure and great for people that are relatively on a budget! Great job I can't be more happy :)
Did we discuss the broken combo of Niv-Mizzet Parun? Deals 1 every time you draw a card. I feel like you can go way too busted
yeah having both on the field is almost GG.
Not to mention having Ghyrson out with Niv-Mizzet Parun and either of them enchanted with Curiosity is an instant win-con the second anyone casts an instant or sorcery, or when you deal damage or draw a card! Infinite triggers to draw out your entire deck and kill everything and everyone at the table.

Commander's Quarters could you do a review/homebrew segment on Throne Magic. Its budget friendly can be played as a commander variant and it would be amazing to see more content on this (as I currently see no one talking about this)

Grapeshot might look really good in this deck for still being rather cheap at about 3 dollars
Curse of the Pierced Heart could also be really good in this deck if you had a lot of creatures with power 1 and toughness 3 or 4.
So he's a lot like Torbrand but adds blue. Also check out scythe of the wretched or curiosity to take advantage of the fact that damage is from the commander.
Raid Bombardment would do wonders in this deck

Kill everything for 3 mana! Cinder Pyromancer out. Then play Banishing Knack and Rograhk. Target the Cinder Pyromancer with Knack, use it to reload that Rograhk, then Grapeshot. Infinite ammo, everyone is dead instantly (I didn't come up with that myself). Crow Storm (1/2 flyers) and Empty the Warrens (1/1) can also go infinite tokens ready to go for your next turn instead of ending it with grapeshot. Pyromancer, Knack and Rograhk are the key.

Whenever a creature is dealt damage, Repercussion deals that much damage to that creature's controller ! Mean AF in this deck.
Honden of Infinite Rage, Smoke Spirits' Aid. Goblin Snowman, Slight Malfunction, Winter Sky, Mana Clash, Obsidian Fireheart, Culmination of Studies, Comet Storm. Yamabushi's Storm is a 2 mana board wipe if Ghyrson has deathtouch.
Intruder Alarm? I know it's not budget, but the $20 totally worth it!
My own version is built to generate tons of 1/1 creatures and capitalize on cards Kyren Negotiations, Close Quarters, and Goblin Bombardment/Impact Tremors. Remember, every 1/1 creature you control is effectively a 3/1 with Ghyrson in play.
Didn’t mention unruly catapult, tap to ping each opponent for 1, untaps when you cast an instant or sorcery

Alright. I spent last week building Ghyrson.
In duel commander matches he does *decently* as long as card draw goes favorably. However he eats removal pretty quickly, and is necessary for the deck to function.
In regular 4p commander he runs out of steam fast. Not enough board damage to end things with with any consistency (need up to 120 player damage, and dealing commander damage with him isn't a planned function of the deck).
After 3 or 4 turns of pinging the board he becomes a major target, almost all the creatures in the deck are 3/3 or less so they're open to easy light removal, and unless you have cheap artifact/card fetches you'll almost never pull the deathtouch artifacts when it would be beneficial.
I'm not gunna deconstruct my deck quite yet, but so far Ghyrson is very fun conceptually but falls short in real games.
Late to the party, maybe, but I just built one of these. I got pretty close. No amulet... but I'm adding in an Arcane Lighthouse. Try and dodge the pingmaster now!

Just played a game with Ghyrson that ended with an infinite with Tandem Lookout and Niv Mizzet.
Squee's Toy protects one creature that you like, or yourself, when you are dealing damage to everything
kind of surprised staff of nin wasnt one of the card draw cards granted its expensive cmc of 6 but its a pinger on card draw :D
I've swapped this guy up with both spellslinging and pinger tribaling but I think I like spellslinging more
my understanding is that only combat damage from the commander counts towards the commander damage total. is that wrong?
I get that the deck techs are super budget friendly but mentioning some killer cards isnt gunna hurt anyone? Like multiple of the Chandra planeswalkers work super well with Ghyrson, several good cards from the 40k set as well fit with him like Pink Horrors, glaring spotlight and lands like arcane lighthouse remove hexproof so you can still still target creatures, no Ophidian eye for some reason, charisma is also extremely strong. Secret sauce is getting some flashback enablers like past in flames for all your cantrips in the grave.
So when I ping a player or creature for one, can I choose where that additional 2 goes? Or does it have to hit the same target again?
A break the bank is a must for this commander

Talisman of Creativity is a bit of a nonbo since with your commander on the board it'll bolt you for 3 every time you activate it for colored mana.
Still arguably worthwhile since it gets you colors before you get your commander out. And taps for colorless after though
The Talisman is dangerous. As Ghyrson will triple the damage of the talisman.

I'm not sure if its budget or not but you didn't have grafted exoskeleton in there, could give your commmander infect and then just ping a player directly for the 10 damage :)

Stuffy Doll seems like it'd be pretty brutal, especially if you don't shy away from spells that do one damage to your creatures too.

I'd only say bite it and pay the extra like $8 for flamers of tzeentch, pink horror, and defiler of instinct. I've been fighting myself not to build this deck because I have a deck building addiction.
