    If there ever was a cover song that illustrates how an artist can change a song, an interpretation that takes it to another level then this has to be the one.
    The Carpenters were only at the beginning of their incredible career in 1969, before Close To You launched them into the stratosphere, but clearly this sublime update of a Beatles song just demonstrated what they were capable of. Richards mastery of arrangement and Karen's grasp of lyrics and delivery is still pure gold.

      And much, much better than what The Beatles created. I wonder if this song was the moment that both John and Paul recognised Karen's exceptional voice. And it would be great to have the album re-released next year after 50 years

    As a 10 year-old boy in the early 1970s when I first started listening to the The Carpenters, I stood out while everyone was into The Jackson 5 and The Osmond Brothers. Karen's voice was perfection. However, even at that young age, I would read every liner not on their albums, songwriting credits band, everything. So I also fully understood what a musical genius Richard was as I listened in total awe to his instrumental and vocal arrangements.

    Richard, Karen and Joe Osborn.
    Those 3 played on every single Carpenters recording. Starting with their first demos in Joe's garage/studio.

    In this version from 1969 Tony Peluso didn't play the guitar, he joined the group at the end of 1972. You can hear him in The Singles album version released in 1974.

  • @JoeTyria

    Karen re-recorded her lead vocal and drums in 1973 and Tony Peluso's guitar overdubs were also added at that time.

    Never cared too much for The Beatles songs until The Carpenters did their magic on them.In my opinion the Carpenters made these songs way better.Just my preference Beattles fans.

    Could also be that Richard wrote the guitar arrangement AFTER they'd originally recorded and released this, which is what the first guitar player was playing in that video. Tony Peluso would have then recorded what the touring band would have been playing for 4 years up to that point.

      Joe Tyria it was rerecorded for the singles released in 1973 its not a remix obviously because karen sings the two versions in different ways i love this one better

    Well, that "syncing" job that Tony Peluso recorded sure took alot of ingenuity. Look very close at the "hippie-guy" in the video recorded in '69 & the way he's strumming guitar chords. When Tony recorded his guitar tracks in '73, he MUST have had to be watching the video on a TV monitor while in the recording studio, in order to "match" the visual, 4 years prior! Or, Tony had great, mystical & clairvoyant powers! (HA!) Tony's guitar recording in '73 DEAD-ON matched the guy in the video in '69!

    I prefer the 1973 remix but I like the "greeness" of young Karen's vocals.

  • @BolsaChicaRadio
    @BolsaChicaRadio 12 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I be a wee bit confused now. Some folks stated that guitars were "added" in the 1973 version, but one notices that the "film" guitar player is syncing EXACTLY to the 1973 track! That's physically impossible, due to the clip was shot in 1969! Some say that Karen's vocal & drums were "re-recorded" in '73 as well. I have listened very closely & intently to both versions; it seems that the '73 version is just a heavily "remixed" version, not necessarily a "re-record". Your thoughts?

      This is the original album cut from 1969. The version found on the "Singles: 1969 - 1973" and most of the later compilations features Karen's 1973 re-recorded lead vocals and drums. Also, guitars were added in 1973. See notes accompanying the video.

      in addition, the 1970 single had most of the piano intro cut off, and was a mono mix which has never been issued on album or CD AFAIK, yet the drums were played by Karen on the 45 version (and perhaps the original Offering album before it was re-named. Richard was always tinkering with their classic hits, even back then.

    Ya know, when I saw that Chris Cornell had a take at this song, ....I, well, his version is so creepy. I don't mean that in a bad way. When I heard his version of it I wondered had he heard the Carpenters version? He was born 3 years after me and I suppose he may have heard the Carpenters as a child, as I was at the time.
