This is the song that I heard on top 40 radio in 1969 while baking cookies with my grandma in her kitchen. I was 6 years old, and from that point on I was a ginormous Carpenters fan. I still am today, and I’m pushing 60!

This is what everybody raves about with that incredible voice, a very rare lower-register (Mezzo-Soprano, then Soprano as higher for women singers), and her 3-octave range! I've never heard any woman singer able to hit those powerful lower-notes, and still reach the upper level as she did, and never have since her passing or ever will.

In recent years, when Richard was asked about the "Ticket To Ride" promo film, he cited it as one of the highlights in their career. Had Karen lived she would've echoed that same sentiment, but, typical of her personality, she would have poked fun of the closeup shots of her mouth!...

Love & hate relation...every song she sang was angelic. On the flip side, tears roll out because of all the unhappiness in her life...you can hear it in her voice. Always wanted to see the Carpenters when she was alive. Peer pressure shut that notion down, as my friends were into Alice Cooper & Black Sabbath. So was I, yet to this day if you put me on a deserted island, I'll choose Karen over them!!!

This song was released in the Spring of 1970 when I was a CAP cadet doing search and rescue. I first heard it on the radio as we were returning home from a search in the Sierras in May 1970 in which 3 search volunteers were killed. The song hit me that three men had died, and after all these years I always think of them whenever I hear this song. Ironically, the search was conducted under winter weather conditions just like what is depicted in this video.

When I was a high school student, my teacher recommended me to hear it. Then I noticed her pronunciation is very clear, so it's very easy for non-native speakers to understand. This is one of several Beatles' songs (along with "Help" and "Nowhere Man") that the Carpenters did not merely "cover," but made their own. By giving "Ticket to Ride" their own flair, they made it as much as standard for themselves as it had been for the "Fab Four."

quite possibly the most amazing cover of all time. so different from the original yet conveys the same melancholia perfectly. sick arrangement; truly brilliant musicians involved with this piece from bar one!!! fairly certain the fab four gave a collective thumbs up!! srv's cover of voodoo chile is a close second???!!!!

There was and has never will never be another Karen Carpenter voice. Her voice was magic. The Carpenters were a group unequaled to none other. Karen did not need to leave us so soon. She was a beautiful person both inside and out. It makes me very sad that her disease was not known about when she passed away. Karen Carpenter is still a legend. RIP

That was their beginning. She was still a teen with the hometown girl with the cute face looks and a beautiful voice. It's sad it only lasted 14 years. Didn't know them personally but that day in '83 left me very sad. She & Richard ruled the 70's and had just made a recent comeback with Touch Me When We're Dancing and it seemed more great stuff was to follow. It's been almost 30 years already.

Love this version, sung with such passion you can hear heartbreak and despair in every note. Karen C could make you believe she really knew what the song was all about, and the musical arrangement has a much more subtle melodious touch than the original. My favourite Carpenters track. Thanks for sharing.

I remember when I first heard this song when it came out in '69. I don't think it got the attention and respect it needed, as we were all hearing the future, a sound we had never heard before and hence could never have considered. So, it took some time for our ears to accept what we were hearing. And, that is witnessed by the fact that the song kept returning to the charts over and over again like few other songs have ever done.

I think it's great when a piece of music is so well written that it lends itself to interpretations in another genre. Of course you can do that with any song, but some songs actually end up sounding like they were written for each genre they are performed in, if you know what I mean. The Beatles version is legendary for many reasons, The Carpenters admired The Beatles greatly and Richard allowed the pure melodic aspects of the original to take us on an all new journey.
