This video and what you talked about regarding being between 56 and 58 (I'm 6' tall, 33 inseam) is clutch. Thanks for getting to what NO OTHER REVIEWER ever talks about: what size they picked and why.
All of yours and Juliet’s vlogs with this bike have pushed me to start to save to buy one! Going to be a while, but I’m sure the wait will be well worth it.
Thanks Andrew, really appreciate that. I still have a fair bit of work to do but I think I’m getting better, or everyone is getting used to my awkwardness 😂
@@DaveNoakes Please don't change. Why try to be someone else? Or someone else's idea of how you should present yourself? Those that have subscribed apparently like you just the way you are.
Almost bought this bike. In the end I went for the Marin Gestalt X11 as most of my riding has been on MTB and the X11 seemed to have more of an MTB look. I also thought the aluminium frame might be a bit more resistant to chips from rock strikes etc as the areas I ride here in Australia are quite harsh on bikes i have found. I bought the bike online and had it freighted out to me as there are no bike shops where I live. I was quite surprised by the build quality/welds and paintwork, looks fantastic. I would have no hesitation buying/recommending Marin. The price is also good considering the components you get for the money compared to some other brands.
@@DaveNoakes What would you recommend in terms of wheel and tire combination for the Headlands 2 if 80% road and 20% gravel? i.e. good road speed without giving up the gravel entirely?
I've had this bike for just over 2 weeks and I'm loving it! Probably close to 500 km on it so fare. I went 1 size smaller as I'm just shy of 170 cm (got a 52 cm) and the fit feels really good though I might try a 90 cm stem.
Excellent review! Where would you put this on the “gravel spectrum?” I’m looking for something pretty road-oriented that will only see dirt or paved roads but no single track or anything that I’d just run my MTB on, and this seems like it might fit that role somewhat well.
Always looking forward to your videos. I remember saving up for a Marin in the 80's. My friend bought one but I ended up with a Giant Cadex. I think I regretted it. Anyway Dave good review of the bike. Maybe some close up video of all the bits and pieces? Just nit picking.
Thank you Trevor. They’ve been around for years, I love where their brand direction. Damn you’re making more work for me 😉 seriously though appreciate the feedback.
I think this is one of the best looking gravel bikes on the market(I do love Juliet's pink and blue one too!), and the price is very competitive! New stocks of them arrive in Oz in April. I think I'll get one!
Great looking bike Dave. What have you found is the best size gravel tyre you run with? Did you say 40 ish is a good all rounder for the different terrain. Great info as per. 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks, yeah 40 is a good size for everything. I wouldn’t go smaller than that to be honest. I’m currently using a 44mm and want to try something even bigger 😂
Aargh now I’ve seen that I think I put an order for the wrong bike (which I still haven’t picked up yet - aaargh again!) , it looks great. Man I can’t wait to get out on it. Nice review though - look forward to hearing more!
Hi Dave! Thanks for a great review. I'm thinking of picking one up too as soon as they are available. The challenge I have is I'm between the sizes and not sure I'll be able to try it where I am, so wanted your opinion. I'm 183 with 87cm inseam (which means I have somewhat longer legs I guess?). Unlike you I'm looking for a more upright position and would probably keep the shorter stem - the trails around here get pretty technical (but not enough to switch to mtb). So based on that would you recommend going for 58? Or 65 with the factory stem will give me an even more mountain bike like position? Thanks again! Great channel!
I was in San Francisco last year and I rented a Marin carbon road bike, it was excellent. But when it came to a gravel bike, with a road riding background I ended up with a Ibis Hakka. It is much more of a road geometry and completely crazy off road and does not have that sloping top tube and long seat post which I personally do not like.
I know what you mean about the high seatpost. I get why people use dropper posts but they are just so heavy. It’s a shame Marin don’t make that road bike anymore. Thanks for watching 🙏🏼
Hi Dave ! Great video thanks so much :) I just bought this bike, and I was considering beginning in ultra distance gravel racing, do you think this is the right bike? I mean I already bought it so I'm gonna do it anyways but would love to hear your opinion :) Cheers !
Hiya, thank you 🙏🏼 I am also considering ultra distance cycling on this bike. I think it’ll be great for it, the geo is nice, I’ve done longs days/rides on it. I think it’s a good choice 👍🏼
Hi Dave. Love the review and your last few videos with the Marin. I just ordered the Marin Headlands 2 myself. New to gravel riding and went for the size M based off your comments and men being 183cm 👍🏻 I’ve seen a few comments that it should be converted to tubeless. Is there much involved with that? It’s tubeless compatible but not tubeless ready right?
Cheers Dave. Great walkthrough of installing tubeless. I think I’m going to need new tires as the stock Schwalbe tires on the Headlands 2 don’t seem to be tubeless compatible. The rims are though 👍🏻
Hi Dave! Wondering if you can get me a bit of advice on sizing. I'm 5'9 and from what I can tell from the sizing guide, I should get a 54cm. Is that pretty spot on? I'm wondering if 52cm is fines as that's the only one I can find online for purchase it's only 2cm difference?!
I think we should wear a brain bucket all the time. And, I always do when I leave the driveway for a "real" ride. But, I often don't put one on if I'm just cruising around the neighborhood or, doing a post-repair test ride. Should it be a legal requirement? No, I believe it should be left up to the individual. Though, we, as seasoned cyclists should lead by example, wear them and encourage others to do so. Enough said, great video, as usual Dave.
Dave Noakes thanks as always! One of the skin grows back handle bar bag matches our bike perfectly! I think another reason to get another accessory for this bike!
Quality vid...makes good watching your as funny azz...lol..ace! How tall are you and what is your bb to top of seat measurement, only asking as buying new bike and that looks one hell of a seat post sticking out.
Thanks mate, I’m 185cm, I’ll measure my bb to saddle...unfortunately my kid has hidden my tape measure...as soon as I find it I’ll let you know 🤦🏻♂️😂 there is a fair amount of seat post showing but the lower stand over/top tube makes even more stick out.
interested in some info on the tyres you have, i currently run panaracer gravelking sk in size 700x43 but i'm finding them sketchy on loose gravel fire roads, looking for something that will dig in a bit
I use the WTB Raddlers, they are 700x44, I find them great on loose gravel and the more sketchy stuff. I’ve been using them a while, there’s a bit more of a review here: th-cam.com/video/pnFF8Xgekng/w-d-xo.html

Really nice bike! As you are sponsored by Marin, how about asking them to give / lend you a cheap bike and see how much difference the rider and the bike really make :)
Yeah it is, I’m not sure about the rake, I just checked the geo chart and it says ‘fork offset 50’ whatever that means 💁🏻♂️😂 it currently weighs 8.2kg
I have already got a Canyon Aeroad and an Orbea Oiz XC MTB, will this serve as a all road winter, bit of gravel/towpath but still hang in a group ride bike with road tyres on?
To be honest the gearing may restrict you for group rides...it depends how strong you are and how fast the group rides are. You could definitely use it as a winter bike.
Thanks Dave, do you have any suggestions, I live in rural, mostly flat Nottinghamshire. I dont like most gravel bikes as the frames all seem too heavy. Looking at the Specialized Diverge but they always sell a lower spec compared to other brands for a premium price? I dont know Marin tbh
Hey, i am thinking about buying the marin headlands frameset and build it up with my rival xplr groupset i have aleady at home. I am 178cm (5'10") with 84cm (33") legs. i checked the geo specs and noticed that 54 and 52 have the same reach but different stack. since my bike shop only has 52 in stock, i was wondering if 52 would also work? would be less upright, but given the high /long headtube i could be fine. What are your thoughts? i have a -6° 100mm stem i would wanna use. should i still opt for a 54? other brands i ride 54 usually, like scott addict and giant tcr

How do you think this would hold up as a endurance road / gravel crossover? Thinking vs a Specialized Roubaix or Diverge
