    as an atheist, i seriously will never understand atheist churches. i can understand wanting to meet up and be around other people who can relate to you but do we really need churches for that?

      I don't understand why they have chosen the term 'atheist church'. Atheism is a lack of belief; it is hard enough already trying to explain to people that atheism is not some form of religion, it is the exact opposite. Any term would be better than atheist church.

    • @Programm4r

Also it looks like the one thing they’re really just doing is playing music and what I can only describe as an extended support group... I mean, call it what you want I guess, so long as it isn’t called the thing that you don’t want to do, that would just be redundant wouldn’t it?

    As a gay Christian I understand the pain and persecution many have felt from the church. I've been told by many that I cannot be Christian and that my life was ultimately damning me to hell. With so many voices out in the world today I believe there is a great confusion over what is true. All I can say is that Jesus Christ has saved my life. It wasn't the Jesus that was taught growing up that condemned me but rather it was the Jesus I found in the Gospels whom saved me. I encourage everyone to study the Gospel for yourself and if you have a willingness seek Jesus for He does love you :)

    • @Ben-fx8lg
      @Ben-fx8lg 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I say this with the kindest intentions.
      Jesus does love you.
      You must understand though, you cannot embrace being gay and being a Christian. You will love one and despise the other. It's one thing if you have the disposition. Where you are struggling with this sin. And you're trying to beat it. Sometimes you fail. But ultimately you desire to rid yourself from it... Thats what being a sinner is all about. And everyone has a version they need to combat. To repent and struggle to overcome.
      But giving in and accepting it. Is a huge no no. Its unequivocally clear that the sin of homosexuality is on par with adultery, if not more. How irrational it would seem if an adulterer made all these excuses for his actions and demanded to be accepted. And not repentant of it.
      Jesus wants you. You have to be sorry for that sin. Just as we all have to be sorry for our sins.

What happens when they conflict each other, who is right?.... Oh it only matters when its your opinion. Gotcha... And you are??? Why are you special?
      Oh, but you haven't thought about it that far, have you? No surprise, here. Cause see now your answer is shallow and full of holes.... And without appealing to an objective moral authority. 1. Its USA.
      2. They have a huge culture around the local church. Which in many areas means that if you are not part of the church. You are not part of local society at all.
      3. Giving alternatives that seem similar in function and provides social contact without the religious part then makes sense to a ton of people in nations like USA.

    FINALLY, a church of realists, rather than people who are driven by fantastical and antiquated ideas. I doubt I will go to any of their sessions and I do not think that the word 'Church' is appropriate for an atheist gathering; however I it's about time that more people started to realise and enjoy this life which we know for a FACT exists and stop pursuing the factually un-proven, inherently ambiguous concept of the 'afterlife'.
    I like the idea that people have faith in 'God', but IMO, they shouldn't let it rule them.

    The share of Americans who identify as atheists has increased modestly but significantly in the past decade. Pew Research Center telephone surveys conducted in 2018 and 2019 show that 4% of American adults say they are atheists when asked about their religious identity, up from 2% in 2009. An additional 5% of Americans call themselves agnostics, up from 3% a decade ago.

    Pretty much all of these Atheist churches are dead now. There are a couple in England that are still around, but the ones here in the U.S. are toast. One of the hidden bonuses of abandoning religion is getting out of the obligatory group-think social activities. The notion that there would be Atheists who would willingly go back to that is beyond me.

    I'm an atheist through and through. Was raised nondemonational Christian, and in church every Sunday. They are on to something here, and I understand anyone who doesn't really understand this idea. A sense of belonging to a community, even if that community is the entire human race, is still strong. We want to belong to something to something bigger than ourselves. It can give you a sense of purpose, and sense we have no purpose, making it up is the only thing you can do. However, I don't get the whole pseudo worshipping. You don't get together and worship the universe and nature without evoking criticism such as these other comments stating that this is very reminiscent of religion itself. Anyways, the getting together and sharing a common sense of purpose through not having one and knowing that this is our one and only life and appreciating that with one another isn't as crazy, I feel, as others may think it is.

    Calling it a "church" is obviously a mockery towards religion, but it seems that it's really just inviting controversy and the stereotype of atheism being a religion unto itself. , which isn't exactly a step in the right direction when it comes to taking the atheist community seriously.
    I oppose this, there's 100 other things to call it besides "church".

    • @Ben-fx8lg
      @Ben-fx8lg 10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      "taking the atheist community seriously" What does that mean? I thought you guys were the rational thinkers, that didn't believe in fairy tales. Why would an atheist need to take atheism, seriously.... Seriously?
      Answer: Because atheism is a religion. Their Bible is Origin of Species. They are as zealous as any believer in their "non-belief" Both feel good trying to convert others to their beliefs or non-beleifs. Both spend time talking about their faith or non faith. And the topic gets the blood pumping and emotions running with both parties...

      Church just means congregation. Its just a group of people. It has this whole other thing, but it was that first and all other things are context based.
      Ben Westrick
      Atheist need to be taken seriously because there are a lot of people who think that we just hate god or that we love sin or some other such nonsense. As long as those myths perpetuate, rational nonbelievers will suffer.
      In the legal sense, atheism is a category of religion because it is a description of subscription to higher or other power. For us that just happens to be N/A.
      Although unlikely, there are plenty of atheists who dont believe in evolution. Thats because atheism and evolution have nothing to do with one another. What happens is that the scientifically minded who become atheists already believe the fact that things evolve. Those who discard religion and then search for other answers, often turn to science and educate themselves.
      Evolution is a fact. It is a scientific theory. Not a hypothesis. A theory. It is a theory in the way that gravity is a theory. It is just as well established and demonstrated.
      Debating is fun, but I haven't quite mastered it yet.

    • @Ben-fx8lg
      @Ben-fx8lg 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well it was a good answer. Until you said evolution is fact.. No it is not. I'll tell you right now, i have debated this topic for years. And you dont have the proof you think you do. What you have is a story "millions of years ago" Aka "Once upon a time".. But you have no evidence
      Feel free to test me on this.

    Wisdom literature they feel to be most appropriate at the time( be it the bible, an Emerson essay, a Whitman poem, a passage from Thoreau and so on) and proceed to 'preach' upon that...it is not dogmatic or narrow at all; at least that has been my limited experience with it.

    I kind of wished something like this existed, because I really like the sense of community in (American-style) churches, and I'd probably even enjoy it if their teachings weren't argued on meaningless books, instead of arguments. But I imagined some sort of whole-society meeting place where everybody in town sees each other every week, not just the atheists. But I always wondered what that thing would rally around, because every weekly meeting needs some pretence to be there. Whether it's playing sports, or religion, or as it seems from this video, non-religious philosophy. I just wish there was something where you really just have some interesting event every week for everyone, and afterwards everyone goes drinking coffee together
