Margaret deserved way better. From getting severely injured on set to having been the reason for one of the only banned episodes of Sesame Street, just for reprising that very role. She seemed like such a nice woman, and only wanted to give children joy...

Mr. Rogers is so amazing because he never talks to kids like they're dumb. He's very honest and sincere. Instead of cutting out the scary witch, he walked them through her putting on the costume and explained why it's not real. What a great way to look at it as an opportunity for a good lesson instead of trying to shield kids from stuff that they'll inevitably encounter elsewhere (no shade on Sesame Street though, there's plenty of examples of them doing the same thing)
@@Elvusmiw the thing is that i would not count zootopia as kids media. Its a family movie. Which means its for everyone. Most actually good children content are for everyone. Mr.rogers was a show that really catered to kids and that didn't pass them off as stupid. I wished there were more kids content like this these days but i cant thing of anything similar.
Right. 👍🏻 I miss when things like “kids” fantasy films also could stretch a little and showcase some deeper themes, knowing that young audience is there but essentially having confidence they can deal with it and would get something out of it. They say she was was very nice to Judy Garland (Dorothy) who was mistreated on set, sexually harassed by the male little people, and was being drugged by the studio making the film.
Honestly, watching the episode myself, I have to say, I largely agree with the Wicked Witch. She just wanted her own personal property, her broom, which is her transportation, back, David wouldn't give it back because she was rude about it. That's like accidentally taking someone else's car keys, then refusing to give them back to them.
I thought the witch might get the broom back if she asked nicely, but she didn't think that way and was not used to being polite. So much so that she found it difficult to say the words when David tacitly told her that she had to do it that way.

It's honestly rather sad to think that Margaret Hamilton isn't around to see that this episode is now available to the public once again, or even to see the grand amount of interest the lost media community displayed when trying to find it. What do you think she would have felt, knowing that so many people of all ages desperately wanted to see this episode, whether out of interest of the source material alone, or just because it was lost media? At least we can all watch her reprise her role as the witch once again, no longer left shrouded in mystery like many other lost episodes. It makes me happy that this has finally been found.
She would have been proud and overcome with emotion to see how much this episode meant to a lot of people. She would have probably had some funny stories from working on the set as well.
She’s technically around. The fact that she could cause so much fear in kids for Sesame Street or even in the wizard of oz (which I wonder if then if she scared kids), means she’s that talented.
There's a certain poetic irony on how the kids who parents claimed to be disturbed by the episode, grew up to really wanting to see it again and keep the legacy alive.

Even if parents hated it, it has become an important part of history and it tells a lot about how families and people thought at the time. I could see how very young kids may not even understand the context of the character if they weren't familiar with the movie, and even then she is definitely a villain.
I lived during those times and saw the wizard of Oz, I was scared witless by the witch. When she came out on TV a few times as a guest, it scared me again. None of this stopped me from watching the wizard of Oz from time to time as I grew up, though. Later, those fears were replaced by horror movies, and that horror was eventually replaced as a grown up by the fear of the IRS. 😆 🤣
It was Snuffalupagus getting the divorce for domestic assault with his trunk, Mrs Snuffalupagus had to get a restraining order because he kept harassing her & the kid got caught up in between & took a giant seething crap on the carpet , so Mrs Snuffalupagus hit the kid. Parents didn’t want their kids to see that one.
Yeah, and they were using their kids as a smokescreen. I can buy SOME kids being scared of the Witch, but I wonder how many of those letters from kids were genuine or faked by the parents using big babyish writing and simple words as a cover.
I was four years old going on five when I saw this...didn't scare me a bit...I'm 53 now...I stated above that parents over-reacted, but watched the Wizard of Oz on a regular basis...someone replied to me with 'rude'. lol

Margaret Hamilton, by all accounts, was a wonderful person. And how she got treated, especially by the studios after her injuries, is terrible. She could have, and would have, done a lot for children and education if given the opportunities. I think she was maligned by fearful parents more than anything else. I didn't know Mr Rogers did shows with her -- just more evidence of how amazing he was.

I did not grow up with any of this, so it's my first time hearing about Margaret's story. It's really sad to hear that she was not only prohibited from showing up again but also demonized by so many parents, especially those that called her Satanic. A lot of those kids very easily could've been really young, or mildly freaked out and their parents completely exaggerated the whole thing, I hear this type of thing was quite common on TV back then. I appreciate Mr. Roger's attempt at making kids less afraid, it's a really nice gesture, she really did not deserve that treatment.
Quick backstory: In 1976 I married a woman 11 years older than me who had just become a grandmother. (She was 34 at the time.) By the time the the little girl (her name was Autumn) was 2 years old she loved Sesame Street, her favorite character was Big Bird. Now, concerning episode 847, Autumn was now 3 years old and she saw that episode and she loved it. She was even happy the witch found her broom and spent many hours playtime after that pretending to be the witch and riding her broom. We even had a witch costume made for her for Halloween which she wore for Halloween until she was 7. Even till this day, my "grand daughter" still can imitate Margaret Hamilton's most famous line ("I'll get you my little pretty. And your dog too") in Miss Hamilton's vooice sp perfectly that it sounds like she is in the room with you. Episode 847 did not scare her. I'm thinking that by the wording of the letters shown in the video that it was the parents who were such namby pambies and had nothing better to do than complain (early stage of the Karen movement) because they don't have a social life, like most Karens. And it must have been a bunch of "Kens" in charge of CTW that had the power to agree with those Karens and kissed their a@@es. I say it was a crock of crap. That episode was not scary, or offensive in any way. Yes I watched Sesame Street with my grand daughter. (By the way, my favorite character was The Count).
I remember hearing some kids my age were scared of the count but not enough to complain about it, it was more of a opinion like not liking spiders. I was born in ‘78.

it’s perfectly reasonable to think that 2 & 3 year olds would be terrified of the Witch. it’s all about context. there had been nothing remotely close to that scary on Sesame Street up til that point. when she grabs the broom and appears to get electrocuted… that’s a powerful image that would no doubt terrify a 2 year old. it’s a credit to Hamilton as an actress that she could do the role so convincingly.
Well it affected me. I had nightmares of the bad witch tickling me nearly to death. At first i was upset and afraid that witch would appear in my dream again like wh en i watched wizard of Oz. After Mr Roger's episode i did lighten up and played with brooms to doing all that same stuff. However to this day i get that old hag tickling me making me vibrate unnaturally. I hate that thing

The older generation like to pretend these things never happened before 2010 but the truth is that people have been "offended" and "acting like snowflakes" forever. Even when Sesame Street first aired in 1969, there were letters from people trying to get it off the air because the show dared to show people and kids of all different colors and cultures playing together.
Truthfully, kids have always been Afraid of the Wicked witch of the west. It’s an objective fact, and also keep in mind, the Wizard of Oz wasn’t readily available to watch as you please in the 1970s, so these kids were not used to seeing the Character. Also try to put it into the perspective of a child, not an adult. Children often don’t understand the difference between real and fake, and seeing something like this could be scary with no explanation.
Seems to me like it was a result of parents back then drilling the whole "ooh, witches are satanic" "Satanism is bad and scary!' idea into their children's heads, more than anything tbh... I honestly feel bad for Margaret she seemed like such a genuine person too.
They overreacted. To be fair, kids then weren’t typically exposed to the level of media they are today. They weren’t as used to it, so it probably was a little scarier to kids then.
And based on the protesting letters parents wrote (which is on the Muppet Wiki). I'm not sure if they even saw the film, despite it airing every year on CBS, then at the time the episode aired, NBC.
You have to remember though, watching movies in the 70s wasn't as accessible as it is now. The only way you could do it is by going to the movies or the film playing on the television and even then there were only incredibly limited ways of recording it off the TV you see.

I hope Margaret Hamilton didn't let the banning of the episode affect her too much. It seriously hurts me to think of the possibility that she died believing that all she would be known for was scaring kids.
I had the honor to meet MS Hamilton as a child, shortly before she died. She was such kind and gentle woman! My Grandparents lived down the road from her and Grandma would bring her fresh eggs and homemade applebutter.
I feel bad for Margaret Hamilton. She was a loving person and only because of that role typecast her for being the big bad. She loved kids and it probably hurt for that to have happened. Just shows how great of an actress she was.
I can't explain why, but as a child, I was also terrified of witches. My grandma had a cute, little wooden witch doll she would put out for Halloween, and every time I saw it, I started scream-crying. My grandma would have to put it away in her closet just to calm me down. Kids are just weird, man.

I don't remember where I read it, but I recall reading that at one point, Toto was supposed to be played by Margaret Hamilton's own little dachshund, Fritz. They had to scrap that idea when his obvious joy every time he was in a scene with her broke the illusion of her being a scary horrible person.

The devastation that Margaret Hamilton must've felt at the horrible, and, frankly, overly dramatic reaction to her episode and her appearance on the Street must've been HUGE. To be vilified like that, and called basically a Satanist... ESPECIALLY given that she was a kindergarten teacher...I just can't imagine. I definitely think that Seasame Workshop overreacted then and they're overreacting now. Kids get scared at things. It's not a bad thing, it's actually part of growing up, and all they needed was for their parents to remind them that it's make believe, that the Wicked Witch want going to hurt them, and it all would have blown over with the next scandal. The Deities know I saw scarier things as a kid of the 80s, i mean, Return to Oz, anyone? *shiver* Thank Goodness for Mr Rogers. He's the true hero in this tale. I love that a) he had her on the show so soon after the Seasame Street episode, b) explained that the Wicked Witch was just a make believe character, and c) did it all without talking down to the children, or making them feel stupid for being scared. Bravo, good sir, bravo. Also: The cheeky twinkle in Margaret Hamilton's eyes when Oscar the Grouch said that he thought he was in love with her just made my day.
In real life Margaret Hamilton was a kind woman. Generous too. A friend knew her. Yet people associate her as an evil character she played. The woman was highly concerned with education. She promoted literacy. Such a sweet person demeaned by a character she acted as almost a century ago.
If what’s been said of the production conditions for _The Wizard Of Oz_ is true, I’m surprised Margaret hasn’t been traumatized by her role as the WWotW.
@@herobrine7617 The Wizard Of Oz has one of the worst movie productions in movie history. It had: Bad work place conditions, alleged sexual assault for many of the actors on set, and Judy Garland the actor for the main character (Dorothy) was in so much constant stress and abuse that she became addicted to amphetamines and barbiturates at the age of 17 and later died of overdose in 1969. Its a really messed up story there are still more things that I left out, Its a sad but interesting story I recommend you search more of it.

The Mr Rogers episode is very similar to a therapy used to treat coulrophobia (fear of clowns). The phobia sufferer meets a professional clown out of character and they have a friendly chat. Whilst the chat goes on, the clown gradually puts on their makeup and costume. Eventually, they invite the sufferer to watch a show with them in character.
A lot of people think that the reason Mister Rogers is so loved is because of nostalgia, but speaking as someone who has no nostalgia for him whatsoever, he is…was a beautiful and amazing person, both on camera and off.
I just saw Margaret Hamilton flash by and I’m excited. She was so incredible as the witch and she was such a loving and caring person to kids. I hope she’s not portrayed in a negative light as this goes on... EDIT: just five minutes in and I’m already heartbroken. Why didn’t these parents explain she is an actress or show them the wizard of oz or something. Poor Margaret must have been devastated.

"The Electric Company" was another show by CTW, also in the mid-1970s, that was meant for slightly older kids that "graduated" from Sesame Street. Part of its opening included regular cast members appearing as one of their regular characters (Spiderman or Dracula or whatever), but then showing them in their normal street clothes. It was meant to drive home the point that all the characters were actually just regular people playing skits. It was considered an important developmental step at that age. I don't recall if that was always part of the opening of the show, or if it was only for some seasons. If it was only in the later seasons, I wonder if it was motivated by this incident like the Mr. Rogers episode. "HEY YOU GUYYYYYS!"

I'm not sure if you're familiar with the term horror TV hosts.... but when I was a kid. Growing up in the late 80s early 90s.... in my local TV area... I was scared of the TV horror host the ghoul, and the son of ghoul... until I found out that they did other gigs on the side and I started watching them on TV I wasn't afraid anymore

"Margaret Hamilton was actually one of the sweetest nicest people" I remember him saying. I didn't know the lady responsible for so many childrens' nightmares was actually one of the kindest souls around. Great actor, helped give my dad peace as we watched his favorite movie together.
This video is a full circle moment for the blameitonjorge channel. The very first video on this channel that helped get it to where it is today was a countdown of the Top 40 Banned/Lost pieces of kids media. The number one spot on the countdown was the Sesame Street episode with the Wicked Witch in it. That video was from 2014 or 2015. Fast forward seven or eight years later and the top spot on that countdown has been found. It truly is a full circle moment for blame it on jorge.
How mannered those letters were to Sesame Street. Sweet and straight to the point. Those were the times when mannerism was just a part of people. If that happened in today's age, the letters would be threats, and full of swearing parents. Then they'd bring it on to social media and bash Sesame Street.
Aww...that really made me tear up a bit seeing Mr Rogers defend Margaret by helping clear the air about her costume to the viewers. Not only was it a sweet gesture to her, but It was also a great opportunity to teach kids the difference between fantasy and real life. I hope they're both over the rainbow smiling in paradise.
Me too! I don't know why exactly but as soon as Mr. Rogers was explaining that witches are "make-believe", I felt a wave of emotion come over me and my eyes glazed over a little.
I feel like this could have been a good lesson on that there are people who look "scary", but are not bad people. Like those born with deformities or receiving scars.
That's exactly what the episode tried to convey, I think. The wicked witch isn't doing anything wrong, she just crash-landed into sesame street, and the cast stole her broom because they were afraid of her and what mischief she could cause. This made her angry and she cast some spells, until the broom was returned and she left without much fanfare. The newspaper said the episode was a lesson on fear, and the plot makes it obvious what that is: unusual things can be scary, but if you let fear control your actions, you can hurt others. Ironically enough, the kids got this lesson (they understood why the witch was angry) but the parents didn't. Their refusal to confront their fear of their kids getting "corrupted by satanism on tv" got an episode banned for 40+ years.

I'm sick of people having this absurd mentality that if you have dark hair, skin, eyes that you are more dangerous than somebody who is blue eyed, blond white skin. And yes, I grew up in Germany as an Arab so I know these ridiculous people exist. But I also blame media, because if you notice almost everytime the black haired character is the aggressive one, the blond blue eyed the good hearted, calm loving character. Sailor Moon, Powerpuff girls, Recess, Sabrina the teenage witch and so many more.
I was born in '66; Margaret Hamilton has always been one of my favorites! That poor woman , was such a wonderful actress, that she was never to escape the witch character,in spite of being a wonderful, caring person. To this day, I have some promo photos of her in my bedroom. She really deserved better treatment during her life; The episode should be released as an apology and in honor of her memory.
Finding this genuinely brought me to tears. I showed both my parents and grandparents this and it was just an emotional ride for us. The fact this was banned for the longest time is just saddening to me because of what The Wizard of Oz meant to us. My grandmother watched Oz when she was just 8. Now she's 68 and both me and my mother watched Sesame Street in our earlier years, so it felt like all of our worlds were colliding, all from different generations in our lives. Watching this historic landmark of an episode finally shown to the world after being gone for 40 years is just astounding to me. Probably one of the most emotional pieces of lost media I've seen discovered. Sure the episode was pretty cheesy, but that how most of Sesame Street was for kids, but they helped me become the person I am today.
In 1978 the kids and I LOVED Sesame Street. One day my husband came home and I was sitting on the coffee table with a dishtowel over my shoulder, raptly watching. He said, "So, what're you doing?" I said, "We're watching Sesame Street!" He said, "where are the kids?" They'd snuck out to go play with the parrot a few houses down. Ooops. The neighborhood had so many kids that after Sesame Street the "Electric Company" would come on. You could hear all the kids yelling, "HEY, YOU GUYS!!!!" (the start of the show). I lost the kids a lot.
I have been subscribed to you since the top 40 lost or banned episodes video and this has to be so surreal seeing your number 1 spot of the wicked witch of the West visits Sesame Street being found for 40 years later.
This might be a bit off-topic, but I'm noticing a pattern in those old letters (4:59 - 5:39) sent to CTW from the parents; none of them seem to realize that it's a famous witch from a classic film and not just some random one that was brought onto Sesame Street. They also appear to perceive her as this supposed unholy, satanic entity based on apparent Christian/Catholic values. It makes me wonder if they just don't recognize her because they didn't grow up on The Wizard of Oz? I feel like this would make sense because they were likely born either around the time or a short while after the film released in 1939 if they were old enough to be parents when Episode 847 aired on TV in 1976. Edit 7/28/22: I don't care what the correct religious terminology is. I was just referring to some of the Bible verses that you can see in some of the letters. Honestly I wish I didn't bring that up in the first place, but I'm gonna keep it as it is so people will know the original context.
It's also likely that the parents back then were younger as people tended to start families earlier. So yeah the chances that they weren't alive when The Wizard of Oz was released are pretty high.
Definitely an interesting perspective. Plus I think people aren’t realizing just how young some of the kids who watch the show are. This very well could’ve been many kids first introduction to scary things and that can be overwhelming for a kid whose unprepared. Many kids probably loved the episode, for others, it was unexpected and scary.
Weren't the 1970s also the time of the "Satanic Panic"? Where a lot of pearl-clutching evangelical Christians thought metal music had satanic messages and stuff like that? I could definitely see parents of that time getting angry about a witch on Sesame Street because of that. Possibly some of the complaints weren't even because the witch actually scared children, just that their parents thought it was improper. That seems in line with the test audience kids not being particularly scared, just curious.
Okay. OMG, THANK YOU! I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought it was strange. Sure, this was in the days before home media, and I can't remember what the exact situation was for airing that movie on television, but she's a character from one of the most famous movies of all time. She even mentions Oz several times. And yet, a lot of the complaints act like this was an original character created specifically for the show, and even then they somehow get the idea she's going to be a recurring regular. It reminds me of these oddly negative reviews two parody themed Sesame Street albums (Sesame Road and Born to Add) got on Amazon quite some time back. Suffice to say, it was a lot of "I bought this for my too young 1-2 year old, and they didn't all the sudden quiet down, so it's fail." Yeah. Like a 2 year old's going to care if there's a parody version of Billy Idol's Rebel Yell.
@@squillz8310 even if those parents weren’t alive at the time Oz was released, in the last century, as far as childrens books and beloved movies go, the wizard was number 1. The movie would have only been about 40 years old at that time, and still extremely iconic. However, i dont think there was any way for households to rewatch their favorite movies, VHS was still not available, so that could be a factor. Along with seeing the wicked witch in the sesame setting, without context, they most likely didn’t recognize her but I still find it odd. It feels like I’ve known the characters in Oz since I can remember and I was born wayyy after.
I'd like to know more about the "walking talking tree" special from Mister Rogers' Neighborhood from 1981. Nobody ever talks about that or tries to search for it anymore. And worst yet, the few MRN fans who have seen the leaked footage from the special where it's just Rogers talking to the viewers about violence in the news erroneously label it as a regular episode of MRN when that wasn't the case. Unlike the Conflict week from 1983, the special only aired once in 1981 and was cautioned to only be viewed with parents. Absolutely none of the NOM segment the special focuses on, which features the "walking talking tree" and an African American actor who passed away a couple of years later, has been seen by anyone in 40 years and I only know about any of this from an MRN fan who posted a thread about it on the Neighborhood Archive message board over 10 years ago.

oh my god there's a lost sesame street divorce episode? my maternal grandparents were getting a divorce in the mid 80s, and my mom has told me that she didn't find it all that scary because there was a sesame street episode about it that made her feel better. i had no idea it was lost media.
The quality in Jorge's videos have gotten more and more amazing with each passing month. I’ve become a fan of this guy ever since some of his earliest list videos. The only thing Sesame Workshop should be embarrassed about is the complete notching and mishandling of the situation. To ban it for 40 years is absurd.
That’s a silly response. There is NO REASON not to make this episode available to those that would like to see it. If you have small children that you believe would be scared by the episode, you don’t have to show it to them. 🙄 A 40+ year old ban “to protect the children” is just plain dumb. It doesn’t have to be aired on TV, just made available to those curious about it.

If anything the fact this scared children so much back then is kind of a sign of how much media has changed. I remember watching the episode way back then and yeah it was one of the creepiest episode I have ever watched up to that age. I was only eight years old at that time and I still remember every part of the witch episode to this day. Today it's tame by the comparison to some of the horror movies that have been made. This is a fascinating story. I was six years old in 1976 and saw this episode when it originally aired. Our family watched Wizard of Oz when it was televised each year. That was a huge annual event and I loved the movie - and it was very scary to me at that age. So I had seen it at least three times by the time Hamilton appeared on Sesame Street. I remember being excited that the witch was on Sesame Street but it did not scare me. I remember talking about it with kids at school afterwards. We all thought it was pretty cool. What is interesting is that I watched Sesame Street religiously between the ages of 2-8 and I had no idea this episode had caused any problems. As an adult now nearly 50 years later, I am just now learning of this ban on the episode and how it disappeared for 45 years. I had no idea. It is truly bizarre to read that people wondered if it was just a myth. If over the past 45 years somebody had asked me “Was the Wicked Witch ever on Sesame Street?” I would have simply said “Of course, I watched it and so did most of my friends. It’s one of the most memorable episodes they ever did.” I’m thrilled to watch it again on TH-cam now as an adult. Hamilton played her exactly the same as she did in the movie. I remember not being aware as a kid that she had aged. She was in makeup after all. And I don’t think it computed that the old lady was actually the actress. Now I can obviously see the substantial aging despite the makeup. But the performance is just spot on and I can see why we were excited as kids to see the real Wicked Witch on Sesame Street. What a thrill. A ban just makes no sense to me and is truly, truly bizarre.
I saw this episode growing up. If I remember right they showed the actress who played the witch out of costume to show she was a normal person and there was nothing to be afraid of. Maybe I am remembering that wrong that could have been a mr Rogers episode.
Not only am I in awe at how Mr. Rogers helped those kids who were traumatized by the episode, but just the fact that after so long we have the episode. Not to mention the format and editing of this video, it's absolutely amazing. This was well worth the wait.

you were the first lost media video i had ever watched back in 2015 with the lost episodes of kids shows and you mentioned this episode. i can’t believe after all these years, it’s finally been found and shown to the public again😭 i never thought i’d see the day
I was able to watch it before it was deleted off TH-cam. I even tried to archive it on the wayback machine. My mom remembered seeing the episode as a little girl, and it was an amazing experience to share this memory with her. Being able to watch a once lost piece of history is almost like a once in a lifetime experience.
My grandfather told me in when he was in school, the school had this huge tape recorder that would record tv. (this was early 70's)He said he would record Sesame Street everyday and then wheel it in to the kindergarten room. Since tape was very expensive (the school only had about 3 tapes total!) he would have to record over the episodes everyday! So he possibly has recorded/seen lost episodes of Sesame Street that we will never see! We talk about this story and have a good laugh over it.
It’s rather depressing that margaret’s work was considered so contraversial at the time, she honestly seems like a nice person and deserved better for her work, even mr. Rogers tried to show kids that her acting wasn’t to be afraid of. I guess this is just another moment of something finally getting it’s notoriety long after it was established.
The craziest thing about this particular episode was that I was telling my mom about it when I was introducing her to lost media and she's pretty adamant she saw the episode when it first aired! When I showed her the episode after it was found and I asked if this is the one she remembers, she said yes! That's just so wild to me my mom was one of the ones who saw this episode. She's a huge Wizard of Oz fan since childhood, so it makes sense why she'd remember it. Though she says for her, the episode made her mad as a child because the wicked witch was mean lol😂
Honestly after watching the clips were people just looking for any excuse to get mad? ( It's not much better today though) cause my those were some tame scenes, what was even scary? When I was a kid it took something like jeapers creepers to scare me, not sure how old I was maybe 12 and I just hated horror movies and seeing the room filled with bodies on the walls really got to me. Course now I just enjoy it, second one was okay, third one was eh.
I remember this episode but don't remember being afraid of it. I also remember the episodes of My Rogers where Margaret Hamilton appeared. Now if you want something really frightening? One of the networks aired a version of "The Christmas Carol" where they had a scene with one of the ghosts that terrified children quite badly. I recall screaming in terror when the ghost flew toward the camera like it was coming out of the TV and its face transformed into a skull and it was shrieking! It was during the Christmas of either 1972 or 1973 I was 6 or 7 at the time. I seem to recall the network stopped broadcasting the movie once they realized it was frightening so many children. I have NEVER seen that version again either. I still recall that feeling of absolute terror. And I enjoy "Gorror" and "Dark" films as an adult.
I never watched Mr Rogers as a kid but everything I've heard about and you really have to appreciate the man's decency and commitment to integrity and kindness
I feel so bad for Ms. Hamilton, she played her role so well. I know she wouldn't have wanted to scare any children, she was just playing the role she was expected to play. I'm glad Mr. Rodgers tried to help the children's opinion of her change. Rest Easy, Ms. Hamilton. We love you.
I find it so sad that Hamilton wasn’t around to see the search blow up, she deserved to see the love and intrigue that surrounded the episode. Lots of love to Mr. Rogers as always for telling it how it is, I’ve never seen another children’s program do that. It’s crazy that this was found. Once the screening happened I thought that was the end (especially after people started posting leaks, which I understand for preservation I just think it made a release less likely). IDK if this'll help but if you've got Sesame Street VS lying around then it could be in one of those. IDK if it'll be a full thing or just a trailer but I know it's in a VHS somewhere. That's what's funny about this whole thing. The wicked witch episode isn't in a VHS but the divorce episode is.
Whoever did this, and however they did it, should be proud - and, with all due respect, screw the gatekeepers who try to decide otherwise. “We don’t want this shown!” Too bad. If, for no other reason than to remember one of the most iconic actors and characters in all of film, Margaret Hamilton, I’m glad someone flipped the bird to the AAPB and the studio and put this out for all of us.
After watching the episode in its complete entirety, a few things I noticed! 1. From the very moment the Wicked Witch arrives, David shows her how they do not tolerate bullying on Sesame Street. 2. Maria has her hair styled like Dorothy! 3. When the wicked witch wants to cuss, she says "FUDGE!" instead. (Twice) 4. Big Bird says "Mr. Looper" and then corrects himself to "Hooper".
Honestly, i feel bad for Margaret Hamilton... She didn't deserve the backlash just for playing a role as a different character. I always loved her character ever since when i first saw her as the witch in the Wizard Of OZ Movie. Her character maybe an evil cruel wicked witch, but her as a person, she looks like a sweet & kind old lady who probably had a dream of becoming an actress. I recall seeing some of these, but I was little. The witch scared me so bad I would cry at night. That's what I recall the most. The intense fear that witch would cause me, it was insane but I still like the wizard of Oz.
I was 5 years old When the Wicked Witch episode aired, and I saw it. I remember fearing the same thing as the person in this video, that Big Bird would get turned into a feather duster. But I also recognized the Wicked Witch from the Wizard of Oz. I had completely forgotten about that episode until I watched this video. Now I am 51 years old. Yes! As a fellow 51 year old, I was upset at the idea that something could make Big Bird into a feather duster. I had totally forgotten until this video brought it back!
Amazing, parents wrote in complaining about the situation and asked it to be removed. Mr. Roger's actually talked to the kids about the situation and why it's ok to be afraid but to learn to differentiate between reality and fiction. God bless Fred Rogers man.
I don't really blame the parents for writing in. This is back before the internet and streaming where the kids expected to watch their favorite show at a certain time of day. The parents couldn't just play another episode and so reached out formally and many of the letters seem polite enough. Regardless of what you teach your child they can still decide to be afraid of the episode. Sesame street just went overboard and locked it away like it was illegal or something.
My mom would have yelled at me for watching too much tv and turn it off and go do something constructive or go clean my room. So I would have just been quiet and happy with the scary witch. Don’t tell mom anything because the tv will be OFF!
The "Mister Rogers" episode featuring Margaret was amazing. At The beginning of the episode, we see Margaret walk into Mister Rogers's house and the two start talking. While the two are talking, Margaret mention that she played "The Wicked Witch" in "The Wizard Of Oz." But the viewers don't believe that because she is dressed like a normal lady. But then later in the episode, Margaret dresses up in her "Wicked Witch" costume, and holds her broom. She even does her "Wicked Witch" voice and also cackles to get the viewers to believe her. This episode was great because, a lot of children from multiple generations were dearly frightened by the witch, but in the beginning of the episode where they showed her dressed like a normal lady, children were no longer scared, and they liked her warm personality. The segments with Oscar and the Wicked Witch are adorable. I can't imagine why (under present day circumstances) they wouldn't want to release this, especially after there was an entire musical about why the Witch was misunderstood and a victim of discrimination.
I really love the Lost Media community, because it's so fascinating to see all these persons putting so much effort into looking for these lost stuffs, without getting anything in return more than the satisfaction of giving the world a piece of history that wasn't there before, making something available again, it's just so great.

Wow, blast from the past. I remember the Sesame Street episode, and the Mr. Rogers episode. I must have been about 7 yrs old in '76 I think, I don't remember being scared.
I’ve always felt a little bad for Margaret Hamilton. Not *that* bad, because ultimately she did get to be an iconic film character who will likely never be forgotten. But teacher to teacher, the idea of getting to take that iconic role and use it to educate and entertain children only to have it blow up in your face would hurt more than I think most of us can understand. I am sure she did, but I hope she knew that despite that one setback and being seen as an evil, ugly witch by so many, she held a special place in the hearts of people of all ages across decades and decades. Still does.

@@joezar33 The thing was... With Mr. Rogers and that generation.... He knew most of the kids would recognize her without the makeup. He knew they already knew her on one level, and showed them. He couldn't totally play into it, but he knew. We all knew. Yeah, the wicked witch may have been scary.... But look who's under the makeup! No kid was afraid of Cora, the sweet old lady with the general store who sold Maxwell House coffee. One generation perceived "Cora" as pretending to be the wicked witch. Then had to get a bit older to find out who Margaret Hamilton was.

I was 7 years old when it aired and I saw it both times at my Grandma's house.I found it strange that the same lady from the 1950's Wicked Witch of the West that was in the "Wonderful Wizard of Oz" was on Sesame Street! I didn't really care for it because it was so off-the-wall and not at all like what I was used to seeing 5 days a week. I saw the Wizard of Oz when I was 3 and that's where I had remembered seeing her face.My Grandma was watching it with me and I said to her "She looks just like she did in the movie!" and my wry Granny said to me " Well she's a Witch whaddya expect?" and we both laughed! I didn't think at that time that it was appropriate for a children's program to have a Witch that was a teacher ( I had 2 of them in school; one in Kindergarten and one in 1st grade) I saw all of the episodes .I also saw every episode of Mr. Rogers,Captain Kangaroo, Wild Kingdom w Marlin Perkins,Electric Company,The Ark, The Bugaloos ,All of the Sid & Marty Croft mini- shows ,HR Puff N Stuff,Puff the Magic Dragon, School House Rock and Villa Alegre' ! (did I leave any out?hmmm🤔)... oh yeah American Bandstand and Soooooul Traaaain, even though those 2 weren't kids shows that's where I first got introduced to Pop, Rock, Disco Soul and Funk Music!
It is pretty strange that the Wicked Witch of the West was part of a banned episode, especially considering how beloved The Wizard of Oz is. It literally is the movie that most American children have watched.
@@A_Black_Sheep94 when the movie first broadcast on TV it scared a lot of little kids but I've never met an American who couldn't tell you the entire plot of the wizard of Oz. If they haven't seen the original they've seen a parody.
This may just be a rumor but I remember hearing from somewhere they lost a good chunk of episodes in fire in a building that was located in New Jersey. They may have stated they that are not totally lost because people or families may have recorded episodes.

Margaret deserved way better. From getting severely injured on set to having been the reason for one of the only banned episodes of Sesame Street, just for reprising that very role. She seemed like such a nice woman, and only wanted to give children joy...

Mr. Rogers is so amazing because he never talks to kids like they're dumb. He's very honest and sincere. Instead of cutting out the scary witch, he walked them through her putting on the costume and explained why it's not real. What a great way to look at it as an opportunity for a good lesson instead of trying to shield kids from stuff that they'll inevitably encounter elsewhere (no shade on Sesame Street though, there's plenty of examples of them doing the same thing)

She just wanted her own personal property, her broom, which is her transportation, back, David wouldn't give it back because she was rude about it. It's honestly rather sad to think that Margaret Hamilton isn't around to see that this episode is now available to the public once again, or even to see the grand amount of interest the lost media community displayed when trying to find it. What do you think she would have felt, knowing that so many people of all ages desperately wanted to see this episode, whether out of interest of the source material alone, or just because it was lost media?
At least we can all watch her reprise her role as the witch once again, no longer left shrouded in mystery like many other lost episodes. It makes me happy that this has finally been found.
She would have been proud and overcome with emotion to see how much this episode meant to a lot of people. She would have probably had some funny stories from working on the set as well.

Even if parents hated it, it has become an important part of history and it tells a lot about how families and people thought at the time. I could see how very young kids may not even understand the context of the character if they weren't familiar with the movie, and even then she is definitely a villain.
I lived during those times and saw the wizard of Oz, I was scared witless by the witch. When she came out on TV a few times as a guest, it scared me again. None of this stopped me from watching the wizard of Oz from time to time as I grew up, though. Later, those fears were replaced by horror movies, and that horror was eventually replaced as a grown up by the fear of the IRS. 😆 🤣

It was Snuffalupagus getting the divorce for domestic assault with his trunk, Mrs Snuffalupagus had to get a restraining order because he kept harassing her & the kid got caught up in between & took a giant seething crap on the carpet , so Mrs Snuffalupagus hit the kid. Parents didn’t want their kids to see that one.
Yeah, and they were using their kids as a smokescreen. I can buy SOME kids being scared of the Witch, but I wonder how many of those letters from kids were genuine or faked by the parents using big babyish writing and simple words as a cover.
I was four years old going on five when I saw this...didn't scare me a bit...I'm 53 now...I stated above that parents over-reacted, but watched the Wizard of Oz on a regular basis...someone replied to me with 'rude'. lol

Margaret Hamilton, by all accounts, was a wonderful person. And how she got treated, especially by the studios after her injuries, is terrible. She could have, and would have, done a lot for children and education if given the opportunities. I think she was maligned by fearful parents more than anything else. I didn't know Mr Rogers did shows with her -- just more evidence of how amazing he was.

I did not grow up with any of this, so it's my first time hearing about Margaret's story. It's really sad to hear that she was not only prohibited from showing up again but also demonized by so many parents, especially those that called her Satanic. A lot of those kids very easily could've been really young, or mildly freaked out and their parents completely exaggerated the whole thing, I hear this type of thing was quite common on TV back then. I appreciate Mr. Roger's attempt at making kids less afraid, it's a really nice gesture, she really did not deserve that treatment.

Quick backstory: In 1976 I married a woman 11 years older than me who had just become a grandmother. (She was 34 at the time.) By the time the the little girl (her name was Autumn) was 2 years old she loved Sesame Street, her favorite character was Big Bird. Now, concerning episode 847, Autumn was now 3 years old and she saw that episode and she loved it. She was even happy the witch found her broom and spent many hours playtime after that pretending to be the witch and riding her broom. We even had a witch costume made for her for Halloween which she wore for Halloween until she was 7. Even till this day, my "grand daughter" still can imitate Margaret Hamilton's most famous line ("I'll get you my little pretty. And your dog too") in Miss Hamilton's vooice sp perfectly that it sounds like she is in the room with you. Episode 847 did not scare her. I'm thinking that by the wording of the letters shown in the video that it was the parents who were such namby pambies and had nothing better to do than complain (early stage of the Karen movement) because they don't have a social life, like most Karens. And it must have been a bunch of "Kens" in charge of CTW that had the power to agree with those Karens and kissed their a@@es. I say it was a crock of crap. That episode was not scary, or offensive in any way. Yes I watched Sesame Street with my grand daughter. (By the way, my favorite character was The Count).

it’s perfectly reasonable to think that 2 & 3 year olds would be terrified of the Witch. it’s all about context. there had been nothing remotely close to that scary on Sesame Street up til that point. when she grabs the broom and appears to get electrocuted… that’s a powerful image that would no doubt terrify a 2 year old. it’s a credit to Hamilton as an actress that she could do the role so convincingly.
Well it affected me. I had nightmares of the bad witch tickling me nearly to death.
At first i was upset and afraid that witch would appear in my dream again like wh en i watched wizard of Oz.
After Mr Roger's episode i did lighten up and played with brooms to doing all that same stuff.

The older generation like to pretend these things never happened before 2010 but the truth is that people have been "offended" and "acting like snowflakes" forever. Even when Sesame Street first aired in 1969, there were letters from people trying to get it off the air because the show dared to show people and kids of all different colors and cultures playing together.

Truthfully, kids have always been Afraid of the Wicked witch of the west. It’s an objective fact, and also keep in mind, the Wizard of Oz wasn’t readily available to watch as you please in the 1970s, so these kids were not used to seeing the Character. Also try to put it into the perspective of a child, not an adult. Children often don’t understand the difference between real and fake, and seeing something like this could be scary with no explanation.

They overreacted. To be fair, kids then weren’t typically exposed to the level of media they are today. They weren’t as used to it, so it probably was a little scarier to kids then.

And based on the protesting letters parents wrote (which is on the Muppet Wiki). I'm not sure if they even saw the film, despite it airing every year on CBS, then at the time the episode aired, NBC.
You have to remember though, watching movies in the 70s wasn't as accessible as it is now. The only way you could do it is by going to the movies or the film playing on the television and even then there were only incredibly limited ways of recording it off the TV you see.

I had the honor to meet MS Hamilton as a child, shortly before she died. She was such kind and gentle woman! My Grandparents lived down the road from her and Grandma would bring her fresh eggs and homemade applebutter.

I can't explain why, but as a child, I was also terrified of witches. My grandma had a cute, little wooden witch doll she would put out for Halloween, and every time I saw it, I started scream-crying. My grandma would have to put it away in her closet just to calm me down. Kids are just weird, man.

The devastation that Margaret Hamilton must've felt at the horrible, and, frankly, overly dramatic reaction to her episode and her appearance on the Street must've been HUGE. To be vilified like that, and called basically a Satanist... ESPECIALLY given that she was a kindergarten teacher...I just can't imagine. I definitely think that Seasame Workshop overreacted then and they're overreacting now. Kids get scared at things. It's not a bad thing, it's actually part of growing up, and all they needed was for their parents to remind them that it's make believe, that the Wicked Witch want going to hurt them, and it all would have blown over with the next scandal. The Deities know I saw scarier things as a kid of the 80s, i mean, Return to Oz, anyone? *shiver* Thank Goodness for Mr Rogers. He's the true hero in this tale. It had: Bad work place conditions, alleged sexual assault for many of the actors on set, and Judy Garland the actor for the main character (Dorothy) was in so much constant stress and abuse that she became addicted to amphetamines and barbiturates at the age of 17 and later died of overdose in 1969. Its a really messed up story there are still more things that I left out, Its a sad but interesting story I recommend you search more of it.

The Mr Rogers episode is very similar to a therapy used to treat coulrophobia (fear of clowns). The phobia sufferer meets a professional clown out of character and they have a friendly chat. Whilst the chat goes on, the clown gradually puts on their makeup and costume. Eventually, they invite the sufferer to watch a show with them in character.
That’s brilliant because it gives the person a chance to take out the clown when its guard is down before it transforms into clown form

"The Electric Company" was another show by CTW, also in the mid-1970s, that was meant for slightly older kids that "graduated" from Sesame Street. Part of its opening included regular cast members appearing as one of their regular characters (Spiderman or Dracula or whatever), but then showing them in their normal street clothes. It was meant to drive home the point that all the characters were actually just regular people playing skits. It was considered an important developmental step at that age.
I don't recall if that was always part of the opening of the show, or if it was only for some seasons. If it was only in the later seasons, I wonder if it was motivated by this incident like the Mr. Rogers episode.

This video is a full circle moment for the blameitonjorge channel. The very first video on this channel that helped get it to where it is today was a countdown of the Top 40 Banned/Lost pieces of kids media. The number one spot on the countdown was the Sesame Street episode with the Wicked Witch in it. That video was from 2014 or 2015. Fast forward seven or eight years later and the top spot on that countdown has been found. It truly is a full circle moment for blame it on jorge.
How mannered those letters were to Sesame Street. Sweet and straight to the point. Those were the times when mannerism was just a part of people. If that happened in today's age, the letters would be threats, and full of swearing parents. Then they'd bring it on to social media and bash Sesame Street.
Aww...that really made me tear up a bit seeing Mr Rogers defend Margaret by helping clear the air about her costume to the viewers. Not only was it a sweet gesture to her, but It was also a great opportunity to teach kids the difference between fantasy and real life. I hope they're both over the rainbow smiling in paradise.

That's exactly what the episode tried to convey, I think. The wicked witch isn't doing anything wrong, she just crash-landed into sesame street, and the cast stole her broom because they were afraid of her and what mischief she could cause. This made her angry and she cast some spells, until the broom was returned and she left without much fanfare. The newspaper said the episode was a lesson on fear, and the plot makes it obvious what that is: unusual things can be scary, but if you let fear control your actions, you can hurt others.
Ironically enough, the kids got this lesson (they understood why the witch was angry) but the parents didn't. Their refusal to confront their fear of their kids getting "corrupted by satanism on tv" got an episode banned for 40+ years.
She was playing the character the *wicked* witch of the west though, she wasn't acting as a different witch.

I'm sick of people having this absurd mentality that if you have dark hair, skin, eyes that you are more dangerous than somebody who is blue eyed, blond white skin. And yes, I grew up in Germany as an Arab so I know these ridiculous people exist. I was born in '66; Margaret Hamilton has always been one of my favorites! That poor woman , was such a wonderful actress, that she was never to escape the witch character,in spite of being a wonderful, caring person. To this day, I have some promo photos of her in my bedroom. She really deserved better treatment during her life; The episode should be released as an apology and in honor of her memory.
Finding this genuinely brought me to tears. I showed both my parents and grandparents this and it was just an emotional ride for us. The fact this was banned for the longest time is just saddening to me because of what The Wizard of Oz meant to us. My grandmother watched Oz when she was just 8. Now she's 68 and both me and my mother watched Sesame Street in our earlier years, so it felt like all of our worlds were colliding, all from different generations in our lives. Watching this historic landmark of an episode finally shown to the world after being gone for 40 years is just astounding to me. Probably one of the most emotional pieces of lost media I've seen discovered. Sure the episode was pretty cheesy, but that how most of Sesame Street was for kids, but they helped me become the person I am today.

This might be a bit off-topic, but I'm noticing a pattern in those old letters (4:59 - 5:39) sent to CTW from the parents; none of them seem to realize that it's a famous witch from a classic film and not just some random one that was brought onto Sesame Street. They also appear to perceive her as this supposed unholy, satanic entity based on apparent Christian/Catholic values. It makes me wonder if they just don't recognize her because they didn't grow up on The Wizard of Oz? I feel like this would make sense because they were likely born either around the time or a short while after the film released in 1939 if they were old enough to be parents when Episode 847 aired on TV in 1976.
Edit 7/28/22: I don't care what the correct religious terminology is. I was just referring to some of the Bible verses that you can see in some of the letters. Honestly I wish I didn't bring that up in the first place, but I'm gonna keep it as it is so people will know the original context.
It's also likely that the parents back then were younger as people tended to start families earlier. So yeah the chances that they weren't alive when The Wizard of Oz was released are pretty high.
Definitely an interesting perspective. Plus I think people aren’t realizing just how young some of the kids who watch the show are. This very well could’ve been many kids first introduction to scary things and that can be overwhelming for a kid whose unprepared. Many kids probably loved the episode, for others, it was unexpected and scary.
Weren't the 1970s also the time of the "Satanic Panic"? Where a lot of pearl-clutching evangelical Christians thought metal music had satanic messages and stuff like that? I could definitely see parents of that time getting angry about a witch on Sesame Street because of that. Possibly some of the complaints weren't even because the witch actually scared children, just that their parents thought it was improper. Okay. OMG, THANK YOU! I'm glad I'm not the only one that thought it was strange. Sure, this was in the days before home media, and I can't remember what the exact situation was for airing that movie on television, but she's a character from one of the most famous movies of all time. She even mentions Oz several times. And yet, a lot of the complaints act like this was an original character created specifically for the show, and even then they somehow get the idea she's going to be a recurring regular. It reminds me of these oddly negative reviews two parody themed Sesame Street albums (Sesame Road and Born to Add) got on Amazon quite some time back. Suffice to say, it was a lot of "I bought this for my too young 1-2 year old, and they didn't all the sudden quiet down, so it's fail." Yeah. Like a 2 year old's going to care if there's a parody version of Billy Idol's Rebel Yell.
@@squillz8310 even if those parents weren’t alive at the time Oz was released, in the last century, as far as childrens books and beloved movies go, the wizard was number 1. The movie would have only been about 40 years old at that time, and still extremely iconic. However, i dont think there was any way for households to rewatch their favorite movies, VHS was still not available, so that could be a factor. Along with seeing the wicked witch in the sesame setting, without context, they most likely didn’t recognize her but I still find it odd. It feels like I’ve known the characters in Oz since I can remember and I was born wayyy after.

Nobody ever talks about that or tries to search for it anymore. And worst yet, the few MRN fans who have seen the leaked footage from the special where it's just Rogers talking to the viewers about violence in the news erroneously label it as a regular episode of MRN when that wasn't the case.
Unlike the Conflict week from 1983, the special only aired once in 1981 and was cautioned to only be viewed with parents.
Absolutely none of the NOM segment the special focuses on, which features the "walking talking tree" and an African American actor who passed away a couple of years later, has been seen by anyone in 40 years and I only know about any of this from an MRN fan who posted a thread about it on the Neighborhood Archive message board over 10 years ago.
This is actually my very first time hearing about this. I knew about Conflict, but truth is that literally *nobody else* has mentioned this before. Now I really want to have it found as well

oh my god there's a lost sesame street divorce episode? my maternal grandparents were getting a divorce in the mid 80s, and my mom has told me that she didn't find it all that scary because there was a sesame street episode about it that made her feel better. i had no idea it was lost media.
Margret Hamilton was the nicest person in real life. My Mom worked with her acupuncture doctor in Chicago.
The quality in Jorge's videos have gotten more and more amazing with each passing month. I’ve become a fan of this guy ever since some of his earliest list videos. That’s a silly response. There is NO REASON not to make this episode available to those that would like to see it. If you have small children that you believe would be scared by the episode, you don’t have to show it to them. 🙄 A 40+ year old ban “to protect the children” is just plain dumb. I remember watching the episode way back then and yeah it was one of the creepiest episode I have ever watched up to that age. I was only eight years old at that time and I still remember every part of the witch episode to this day. Today it's tame by the comparison to some of the horror movies that have been made. This is a fascinating story. I was six years old in 1976 and saw this episode when it originally aired. Our family watched Wizard of Oz when it was televised each year. That was a huge annual event and I loved the movie - and it was very scary to me at that age. So I had seen it at least three times by the time Hamilton appeared on Sesame Street. I remember being excited that the witch was on Sesame Street but it did not scare me. I remember talking about it with kids at school afterwards. We all thought it was pretty cool. What is interesting is that I watched Sesame Street religiously between the ages of 2-8 and I had no idea this episode had caused any problems. As an adult now nearly 50 years later, I am just now learning of this ban on the episode and how it disappeared for 45 years. I had no idea. It is truly bizarre to read that people wondered if it was just a myth. If over the past 45 years somebody had asked me “Was the Wicked Witch ever on Sesame Street?” I would have simply said “Of course, I watched it and so did most of my friends. It’s one of the most memorable episodes they ever did.” I’m thrilled to watch it again on TH-cam now as an adult. Hamilton played her exactly the same as she did in the movie. I remember not being aware as a kid that she had aged. She was in makeup after all. And I don’t think it computed that the old lady was actually the actress. Now I can obviously see the substantial aging despite the makeup. But the performance is just spot on and I can see why we were excited as kids to see the real Wicked Witch on Sesame Street. What a thrill. A ban just makes no sense to me and is truly, truly bizarre.

I saw this episode growing up. If I remember right they showed the actress who played the witch out of costume to show she was a normal person and there was nothing to be afraid of. Maybe I am remembering that wrong that could have been a mr Rogers episode.

Not only am I in awe at how Mr. Rogers helped those kids who were traumatized by the episode, but just the fact that after so long we have the episode. Not to mention the format and editing of this video, it's absolutely amazing. This was well worth the wait.
I got goosebumps when I heard the episode was found! Like many, I thought this would be something that would never be found, because of its controversy, most of all, its age. Thank you for making this video, it was great.

I was able to watch it before it was deleted off TH-cam. I even tried to archive it on the wayback machine. My mom remembered seeing the episode as a little girl, and it was an amazing experience to share this memory with her. Being able to watch a once lost piece of history is almost like a once in a lifetime experience.

My grandfather told me in when he was in school, the school had this huge tape recorder that would record tv. (this was early 70's)He said he would record Sesame Street everyday and then wheel it in to the kindergarten room. Since tape was very expensive (the school only had about 3 tapes total!) he would have to record over the episodes everyday! So he possibly has recorded/seen lost episodes of Sesame Street that we will never see! We talk about this story and have a good laugh over it.
It’s rather depressing that margaret’s work was considered so contraversial at the time, she honestly seems like a nice person and deserved better for her work, even mr. Rogers tried to show kids that her acting wasn’t to be afraid of.
I guess this is just another moment of something finally getting it’s notoriety long after it was established.
The craziest thing about this particular episode was that I was telling my mom about it when I was introducing her to lost media and she's pretty adamant she saw the episode when it first aired! When I showed her the episode after it was found and I asked if this is the one she remembers, she said yes! That's just so wild to me my mom was one of the ones who saw this episode.
She's a huge Wizard of Oz fan since childhood, so it makes sense why she'd remember it. Though she says for her, the episode made her mad as a child because the wicked witch was mean lol😂
Honestly after watching the clips were people just looking for any excuse to get mad? ( It's not much better today though) cause my those were some tame scenes, what was even scary? When I was a kid it took something like jeapers creepers to scare me, not sure how old I was maybe 12 and I just hated horror movies and seeing the room filled with bodies on the walls really got to me. Course now I just enjoy it, second one was okay, third one was eh.

I remember this episode but don't remember being afraid of it. I also remember the episodes of My Rogers where Margaret Hamilton appeared.
Now if you want something really frightening? One of the networks aired a version of "The Christmas Carol" where they had a scene with one of the ghosts that terrified children quite badly. I recall screaming in terror when the ghost flew toward the camera like it was coming out of the TV and its face transformed into a skull and it was shrieking!
It was during the Christmas of either 1972 or 1973 I was 6 or 7 at the time.
I seem to recall the network stopped broadcasting the movie once they realized it was frightening so many children. I have NEVER seen that version again either. I still recall that feeling of absolute terror. And I enjoy "Gorror" and "Dark" films as an adult.
I never watched Mr Rogers as a kid but everything I've heard about and you really have to appreciate the man's decency and commitment to integrity and kindness

I find it so sad that Hamilton wasn’t around to see the search blow up, she deserved to see the love and intrigue that surrounded the episode. Lots of love to Mr. Rogers as always for telling it how it is, I’ve never seen another children’s program do that.
It’s crazy that this was found. Once the screening happened I thought that was the end (especially after people started posting leaks, which I understand for preservation I just think it made a release less likely). MANIFESTING the divorce episode, my friends and I are waiting for the day we get to see Snuffys parents divorce.

If, for no other reason than to remember one of the most iconic actors and characters in all of film, Margaret Hamilton, I’m glad someone flipped the bird to the AAPB and the studio and put this out for all of us.
After watching the episode in its complete entirety, a few things I noticed!
1. From the very moment the Wicked Witch arrives, David shows her how they do not tolerate bullying on Sesame Street.
2. Maria has her hair styled like Dorothy!
3. When the wicked witch wants to cuss, she says "FUDGE!" instead. (Twice)
4. Big Bird says "Mr. Looper" and then corrects himself to "Hooper".

I always loved her character ever since when i first saw her as the witch in the Wizard Of OZ Movie.
Her character maybe an evil cruel wicked witch, but her as a person, she looks like a sweet & kind old lady who probably had a dream of becoming an actress.
She was a legendary actress back then in the golden ages of film making and she will always be in our childhood memories... RIP Margaret. 🙏😢

I recall seeing some of these, but I was little. The witch scared me so bad I would cry at night. That's what I recall the most. The intense fear that witch would cause me, it was insane but I still like the wizard of Oz.

I was 5 years old When the Wicked Witch episode aired, and I saw it. I remember fearing the same thing as the person in this video, that Big Bird would get turned into a feather duster. But I also recognized the Wicked Witch from the Wizard of Oz.

Mr. Roger's actually talked to the kids about the situation and why it's ok to be afraid but to learn to differentiate between reality and fiction.

I don't really blame the parents for writing in. This is back before the internet and streaming where the kids expected to watch their favorite show at a certain time of day. The parents couldn't just play another episode and so reached out formally and many of the letters seem polite enough. Regardless of what you teach your child they can still decide to be afraid of the episode. Sesame street just went overboard and locked it away like it was illegal or something.
My mom would have yelled at me for watching too much tv and turn it off and go do something constructive or go clean my room. So I would have just been quiet and happy with the scary witch. Don’t tell mom anything because the tv will be OFF!

The "Mister Rogers" episode featuring Margaret was amazing. At The beginning of the episode, we see Margaret walk into Mister Rogers's house and the two start talking. While the two are talking, Margaret mention that she played "The Wicked Witch" in "The Wizard Of Oz." But the viewers don't believe that because she is dressed like a normal lady. But then later in the episode, Margaret dresses up in her "Wicked Witch" costume, and holds her broom. She even does her "Wicked Witch" voice and also cackles to get the viewers to believe her. This episode was great because, a lot of children from multiple generations were dearly frightened by the witch, but in the beginning of the episode where they showed her dressed like a normal lady, children were no longer scared, and they liked her warm personality. You can watch the full episode on TH-cam it's really sweet.
The segments with Oscar and the Wicked Witch are adorable. I can't imagine why (under present day circumstances) they wouldn't want to release this, especially after there was an entire musical about why the Witch was misunderstood and a victim of discrimination.

I really love the Lost Media community, because it's so fascinating to see all these persons putting so much effort into looking for these lost stuffs, without getting anything in return more than the satisfaction of giving the world a piece of history that wasn't there before, making something available again, it's just so great.

As a kid, I was disturbed and sometimes dreamt of that witch that tried to eat bugs bunny. Everytime I think about that before it raises my back hairs and just creeps me out.

I’ve always felt a little bad for Margaret Hamilton. Not *that* bad, because ultimately she did get to be an iconic film character who will likely never be forgotten. But teacher to teacher, the idea of getting to take that iconic role and use it to educate and entertain children only to have it blow up in your face would hurt more than I think most of us can understand. I am sure she did, but I hope she knew that despite that one setback and being seen as an evil, ugly witch by so many, she held a special place in the hearts of people of all ages across decades and decades. Still does.

I was 7 years old when it aired and I saw it both times at my Grandma's house.I found it strange that the same lady from the 1950's Wicked Witch of the West that was in the "Wonderful Wizard of Oz" was on Sesame Street! I didn't really care for it because it was so off-the-wall and not at all like what I was used to seeing 5 days a week. I saw the Wizard of Oz when I was 3 and that's where I had remembered seeing her face.My Grandma was watching it with me and I said to her "She looks just like she did in the movie!" and my wry Granny said to me " Well she's a Witch whaddya expect?" and we both laughed! I didn't think at that time that it was appropriate for a children's program to have a Witch that was a teacher ( I had 2 of them in school; one in Kindergarten and one in 1st grade) I saw all of the episodes .I also saw every episode of Mr. Rogers,Captain Kangaroo, Wild Kingdom w Marlin Perkins,Electric Company,The Ark, The Bugaloos ,All of the Sid & Marty Croft mini- shows ,HR Puff N Stuff,Puff the Magic Dragon, School House Rock and Villa Alegre' ! (did I leave any out?hmmm🤔)... oh yeah American Bandstand and Soooooul Traaaain, even though those 2 weren't kids shows that's where I first got introduced to Pop, Rock, Disco Soul and Funk Music!
It is pretty strange that the Wicked Witch of the West was part of a banned episode, especially considering how beloved The Wizard of Oz is. It literally is the movie that most American children have watched.

The Sesame Street Fandom says there are 53 episodes that are missing. Though Sesame Workshop has never publicly stated that they are totally missing.

This may just be a rumor but I remember hearing from somewhere they lost a good chunk of episodes in fire in a building that was located in New Jersey. They may have stated they that are not totally lost because people or families may have recorded episodes.
