The "vivats" in the middle of this anthem are traditionally sung (as here) by the King's Scholars of Westminster School which is a fee-paying school located in the precincts of Westminster Abbey and founded in its present form in 1560, though dating from at least the 1340s.
The King's Scholars also date from 1560.
Their role in declaiming the "vivats" is documented as far back as James II's coronation in 1685.

I had never seen the entrance before to "I Was Glad". Such a ceremony! I think of what the children, the pages and the Wales children must feel. At least they are next to their parents. Charles looks full of happiness. This is his culminating moment. He has a kind face. He has been through much suffering - his misbegotten first marriage, the disapproval of his father, the bullying at school. He wasn't made in the mold of an English schoolboy so he was punished - for liking art and music!

The organ played Happy Birthday to me (Queen Elizabeth III) and my sister, Princess of Wales as we both turned 21. Mummy, also Princess of Wales looked very proud of me walking down the long aisle and she didn’t think I’d walk all the way because I was ill 4 months prior but I wanted to not let my people down. Catherine, Princess of Wales, is wearing the robes of Dame Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order.
These robes were also worn by Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh; by Princess Alexandra of Kent; and by the Duchess of Gloucester.
Prince Michael of Kent wore the same robes, but as Knight Grand Cross of the Royal Victorian Order.
Prince William, Prince Edward, the Duke of York, the Duke of Kent and the Duke of Gloucester all wore the robes of the Knight of the Order of the Garter.

Charles has an air of contentment. He is the host acknowledging and welcoming his guests. He notices the historian David Starkey, who bows correctly. Charles looks left and right, seeing who has come and - noticing. This is a beautiful pageant. And this the slimmed down version! Can't imagine how Elizabeth II's coronation was over 3 hours. Beautiful costumes, beautiful music, and a form of Christianity unknown to me personally, but the Archbishop and Charles commit to it sincerely.

@@Hadlad90You are mistaken: I timed it on the recorded full BBC TV transmission of 1953 and it only took 12 minutes longer because only a few individuals did their homage: the Archbishop of Canterbury, the Dukes of Edinburgh, Gloucester, Kent and Norfolk, one marquess, one earl, one viscount and one baron - 9 people as opposed to only two this time.
If the entire peerage had sworn fealty individually, the 1953 ceremony would have been lucky to have finished by dawn the following day!

@@Hadlad90 *Most* available images of the 1953 Coronation have been condensed but *not all* . "A Queen is Crowned" was heavily edited but the recorded monochrome live BBC transmission of the 1953 Coronation available on TH-cam which I have watched numerous times is of the *entire* service with *nothing removed* . It lasts around 3 hours and tallies exactly with the printed Order of Service for the ceremony available on the Web which explicitly states exactly who swore the oath of homage and confirms that only 9 individuals did so:
"...In like manner [to the Duke of Edinburgh] shall the Duke of Gloucester and the Duke of Kent severally do their homage. After which *the Senior Peer of each degree* (of the Dukes first by themselves, and so of the Marquesses, Earls, Viscounts, and Barons in that order) shall ascend the steps of the Throne and, having first removed his coronet, shall kneel before her Majesty and place his hands between the Queen’s: and *all the Peers of his degree* , having put off their coronets, shall kneel in their places and *shall say with him* [the oath of allegiance]"
The homage, being communal rather than individual, took no more than 9 minutes and was accompanied by music sung by the choir. Any editing would have been totally obvious as you can clearly hear both the words of the oath-takers and the choir happening simultaneously.
I will post the link to the Order of Service and the video (containg Richard Dimbleby's live commentary) so you can check for yourself.

    • @MrBulky992
      @MrBulky992 11 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

@@Hadlad90 The video on TH-cam of the recorded BBC live transmission represents the images seen by the television audience on that day in 1953. It is 2:56:41 in length and covers the Queen's arrival at the Abbey until her departure:
      th-cam.com/video/52NTjasbmgw/w-d-xo.html
      The homage begins at 1:40:41
and finishes at 1:49:00 so the whole thing took just over 8 minutes.
The following individuals knelt before the Queen:
      Archbishop of Canterbury
      Duke of Edinburgh
      Duke of Gloucester
      Duke of Kent
      Duke of Norfolk
      Marquess of Huntly
      Earl of Shrewsbury
      Viscount Arbuthnot
      Lord (Baron) Mowbray
      - 9 individuals.
So cutting out most of the homage in the 2023 coronation saved about 6 or 7 minutes and does not in any way account for the discrepancy in length between 1953 and 2023.

The Dymoke family haven't actually carried the Royal Standard for centuries. For centuries they were The King's Champion, who rode into Westminster Hall to challenge anyone who didn't accept the Sovereign. They first performed the role in 1377. Last time was 1821. They have carried the Royal Standard since the coronation of King George V in 1911.

The composer is Sir Hubert Parry, one of the King's favourites.
This piece is always sung during the King and Queen's entrance into the Abbey for all coronations since it was first composed in 1902 (i.e. 1902, 1911, 1937, 1953)
It is also performed on many other occasions but the central section where the King's scholars from Westminster School sing "Vivat Regina Camilla" and "Vivat Rex Carolus" is always missed out as it only applies for coronations. It was sung in this form at the wedding of Prince William and Catherine Middleton a decade ago.

amazing how idiotic the BBC commentary was. You'd almost think it was done by Americans but for the accent. But, no.

The commentary was nowhere near as good as Richard Dimbleby's near perfect one in 1953 but I have watched commentary on the other channels, both British and foreign and the BBC wins. Some channels talked over important moments. Others commented on the events in the Abbey with background noise from the Mall, including sounds of marching to drums! Some were full of inaccuracies and irrelevancies. Some just couldn't stop talking: it sounded more like a panel discussion than a commentary.
