  • Join me for Episode 1 of my Cities: Skylines series where I start building a new city without using any assets or mods from the Steam Workshop! I recently took advantage of the DLC sales during the release of Campus so the objective of this series is to experience the new content (for me anyway) and build a city while unlocking everything along the way!
    DLCs enabled: After Dark, Snowfall, Match Day, Natural Disasters (with disasters at ~25%), Mass Transit, Green Cities, Parklife, and Industries
    Map: Eden Valley from the Green Cities DLC
    Interested in playing? Check the game out on Steam using the link below:

    one of the most intelligent city start videos I've seen on youtube (if not the best) easy to update with unlocked roads, also easy to correct if mistakes. just one question, you are losing a lot of usable land the way you zone with spaces in between, I asume it's for pedestrian paths, but I don't really recommend it like that. but I may be wrong, I will go through the entire playlist, awesome video, awesome voice. easy sub

      Hey Doc - thank you for taking the time to leave a comment, I appreciate the feedback. Welcome to the channel! I agree and also think I went a little overboard on the pedestrian pathways. The sidewalks are usable and the pathways should be extra/shortcuts in areas without good pathing. I've since reduced the number of pathways in later sections of the city!

    Hello once again! I love the way that you leave much space in between housing for paths, which I recently started doing in my cities after zi did it for one district. As I believe I said, you make it very smoothly and the way that you think is just perfect for building a city.

    • @zkittlezthabanditt604
      @zkittlezthabanditt604 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      (Can't edit comment since I'm on browser) One thing that I do a lot in my cities is mark the buildings as historical so they don't change look, and I'll do this when I'm trying to make a district stick out as being a poor or ghetto district, or if I'm trying to make it look like a rich suburban neighborhood; sometimes I'll just do it because the buildings are just as I want them!

    • @jester.Gaming
      @jester.Gaming  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey again Zkittlez! The pathways help a lot to get citizens around the city - a good pathway network with public transportation can significantly reduce the traffic in the city.
      The downside to using a grid network is that the building zones are all the same size and a lot of the buildings will look exactly the same once levelled up and it makes the city look a bit boring. I've started using the historical buildings at various building levels recently to try and put some variety in the city. I've had a few requests to talk about my process for zoning so I will be sure include making some of the buildings historical!
      Thank you for your continued support - I'm glad you like how I've been building the city. I sometimes worry that something I do will ruin the city down the line or not quite work the way I want it to so I've been going extra slow :)

    • @jester.Gaming
      @jester.Gaming  3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Thanks Tommy, great question! These gaps are to accommodate pedestrian pathways. The extra gap allows me to put them in without taking up any of the zoning grid. I may have gone a little overboard but it's very important to have a decent public transportation system (including pathways!) in the city to help control traffic. If possible your citizens will walk or transit to their destination rather than drive which helps relieve traffic in the city. I hope this helps - welcome to the channel!

      Hi Rexy, thank you for your support! The first thing I do is try and pick out a good map - something with decent building area, outside connections, and some natural resources (farming and forestry are the best since they are renewable). Once I have an idea of what map to play I usually go in and enable unlock everything and unlock tiles to look around the map and think about what to do. When I get basic plan I will start again without everything unlocked and go from there! Take everything slowly and build bit by bit. Don't hesitate to make multiple saves to try things out before you implement into the city. It sounds a little tedious but it does work :)

    Why no one ever use the premade roundabout? Can use the small one right at the start. Just curious. Also running the water pipes under the roads not only looks nice, but is realistic, as thats what they do in real life as well, can't access them for maintenance if they are under buildings.

    • @jester.Gaming
      @jester.Gaming  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Andrew! Good question. I think the roundabout I put in was a little bit larger than the one available at the start. There isn't anything wrong with the prebuilt ones though!
      I agree, the water pipes underground look a lot better on the streets than having them cross over everything. I don't have the most realistic city but that's one of the things I like to have!

    Hey what's the difference between the top and bottom sliders in the budget menu?

    • @jester.Gaming
      @jester.Gaming  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Runny, one of the sliders is day and the other night. Some services such as public transportation aren't used as much at night since your citizens are sleeping meaning you can reduce the number of vehicles on the road by reducing the budget. I don't tend to differentiate between night and day too much and pretty much just adjust them the same. I hope this answers your question. Welcome to the channel! :)

I also usually try things out a little bit before I record s video to make sure everything works :) My best advice would be to take things slow and plan it out a little bit ... There is no need to build your city as fast as possible. Thanks for leaving a comment - welcome to the channel!

      Hey Ivan, welcome to Cities: Skylines and the channel - I'm glad you're liking the episodes! I have all of the current DLCs at the moment ... as of episode 1 I may have been missing one or two though. The Recycling Centre is from the Green Cities DLC and unlocked at the Boom Town milestone. The DLCs are usually at a steep discount on the Steam Store a few times a year - and likely other stores as well but I've purchased mine through Steam. If you're looking for a specific feature or building I suggest you check out the wiki page (skylines.paradoxwikis.com/Cities:_Skylines_Wiki) as it tells you which building or feature comes from what DLC. I hope this helps!

    Is it worth trying to unlock things like Lazaret Plaza and the Courthouse when the city is still small, or is the growth too delicate to mess with the cims like that in normal progression?

    • @jester.Gaming
      @jester.Gaming  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey Craig, that's a great question! I can't answer with absolute certainty since I haven't tried to unlock these buildings early on but I would guess that it's possible. It might be a little more difficult early on since you won't have the extra money to use - I can sustain a pretty heavy loss of profit before I would start getting concerned. But it may also be easier given the smaller population and therefore take less time to get to 50% and quicker recovery.

    • @CraigPaschang
      @CraigPaschang 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jester.Gaming I went ahead and tried-courthouse was pretty easy, I just didn’t build police when it became available and watched my crime rate. I unlocked it before even hitting the population milestone that makes it available! Lazaret was harder in normal progression, I tried cutting sewage but it just gave me death waves. I ended up zoning industrial in the residential section and that worked. Only lost about 200 cims so it didn’t affect my budget too badly!

    • @jester.Gaming
      @jester.Gaming  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey CrxzyYT, it sounds like you're leveling up your industry and commercial buildings faster than your citizens can become educated. Your industry and commercial buildings will level up based off of the service coverage they have (police, fire, parks, etc.). Higher level buildings require citizens with more education. These are all really quick and easy to put in since it's just a matter of plopping in a new building. However, your citizens usually need to go through the education system (elementary, high school, and university) before they can work at some of the higher level buildings. This takes time and your city isn't waiting around for them!

      Without wanting to abuse your goodwill, I would like to ask you a question. I'm playing on the same map as you and I'm also following your city layout to the letter. It happens that at a given moment the demand for residential subdivisions is only increasing and my city, despite having done the subdivisions like you, subdivisions does not grow, on the contrary, it is only decreasing the number of people. As I said before, I am following the same steps as you and while your city is increasing in population, mine is stagnant and decreases more than it increases. What could possibly be happening? Could you tell me?
      Thanks again for your patience and your attention.

    • @jester.Gaming
      @jester.Gaming  ปีที่แล้ว

      @@professor_mauricio No problem at all Professor Mauricio! Since you're following the layout very closely I assume you've put in the other zones as well (industrial and commercial) for jobs? Your citizens may also be leaving if there aren't enough services (garbage, education, emergency, etc.) in the city. Unfortunately what the video does not show is some of the time I spent in between (especially early on) just letting the city grow and stabilize. This was one of the downsides to some of the early episodes - I didn't always show every single thing. Once I started seeing that people were following along a lot more is included (or at least talked about) in each episode. You should also consider it's about long term growth of the city ... there will be some ups and downs but the overall trend should be up! I hope this helps!

    It's not a good idea to build your city's road network around a roundabout, especially in the vanilla game. It becomes a bottleneck later on. Contrary to propaganda, a roundabout is not a high capacity junction.
    Note that just because you don't want your residential area to suffer from pollution from your industry doesn't mean that you don't want them well connected. Workers have to get from their homes to their factory jobs on a daily basis. You don't want them all going through a single bottleneck. Ideally, you want your commercial area between the two so that the workers can shop on their way home and the industry can deliver goods directly to the stores. The commercial area also serves nicely as a buffer between the polluting industrial areas and the sensitive residential areas.

    • @jester.Gaming
      @jester.Gaming  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I definitely found this out later on dlwatib! It did last for quite a long time though. The industrial area is something that I need to rework at this point.
