    How I usualy do it is I go to library (to get to library click go
    while in finder, press option on your keyboard, library should show up,
    click it, then you should be in library), press command and F, set left
    dropdown to "File size" the next to "is greater than" put the last one
    to the type of storage unit you want to look for, (ie Gigabytes,
    megabytes, etc) the space between the last two to the number of the
    measurement units you want to look for, then press enter. (I would
    recommend doing a back up before deleting anything)

    Hi, thanks for the video about the "Other" issue! Is it safe to delete all the files in the "Attachments" folder that are under Library > Application Support > Main Profile...?

    • @OneByteAcademyOfficial
      @OneByteAcademyOfficial  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I don't see this folder on my Mac 🤔 so it means it's probably connected to some app you are using, not to the system itself so I believe you can delete that. Just to make sure everything will be fine, you can copy all the files somewhere else, delete it in the library and if everything works well, that feel free to get rid of it. Let me know how I went 👍🏻

I found this type of "Attachments" folder are under some other folders as well, and they contain a couple of GB easily (at least in my Mac). I downloaded big sur on my macbook 2017 but cancelled it bc it's taking too much space. I deleted it but some of its files I guess were still stored in 'others'. I really dont know how to get rid of it.

    • @OneByteAcademyOfficial
      @OneByteAcademyOfficial  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is true that Big Sur requires a little bit more space than previous OS. It is around 20 GB of space. The Mac OS installer is not stored in downloads but in the applications folder, try to have a look there if you want to delete it.
      But I would still recommend you to clean some space on your Mac and install Big Sur because it brought a lot of improvements this year.

    • @OneByteAcademyOfficial
      @OneByteAcademyOfficial  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I you have already went through these system files, cashes and temporary files. I guess it will be something in your documents what apple can't recognise as documents. It is sometimes showing me over 100Gb of ,,other" because of my Final Cut projects, so these not processed videos can be categorised as other. It's hard to say what it could be in your case. Maybe some large projects from whatever app you are using.
      But try one more thing! Once you click about my Mac and you are on the storage tab. Click on the MANAGE button and wait a bit longer. It sometimes help to get the bars straight and moves some of the unidentified files under different category, so you might find out that the ,,other" bar is actually smaller that 57 Gb. I am very curious if it will help, let me know about it 🧐

    • @OneByteAcademyOfficial
      @OneByteAcademyOfficial  ปีที่แล้ว

      The backup is usually not saved on the main hard drive and it is automatically replaced with a new backup or deleted when running out of space. The change of other storage size is influenced by the categorising files, it doesn’t need to be the backup at all.

    • @OneByteAcademyOfficial

      It's hard to say what is taking up the storage. In your case it will most likely be somewhere in the documents. You can watch my other video about this topic, I show there different places and techniques so you might find it there: th-cam.com/video/5d-UH5byLpA/w-d-xo.html

      Yes ,,other" is a problem with the small disk. The Big Sur installation surely fits under other so you can save 12GB by either deleting it or updating to it. For the update itself you don't need to do anything. Just follow the instructions after you click on it. You will find video about it on this channel as well. None of your content will be lost or replaced during that.
      But if you really want to wipe the disk. I would not bother about any partition. I am sure you have in your computer so many things you will never need as everybody has. So the best ways is to just copy important files on the external drive and wipe the computer disk entirely. You will start clean and after the installation is finished, you can easily transfer your data back from the external drive.

      Hello James, A clean installation of macOS 11 takes up to 15-20 GB. In your case it’s showing more, but I believe it has something to do with certain applications that falsely get labeled as core applications and thus categorized under the systems folder. It doesn’t mean that the system really takes this much. 💻

      @@jasminebriannatabanao4825 These might actually be apps you are using and you need. I understand your concern by seeing this large space taken by system. Same story is seeing 100gb of other storage. It’s not really other or system, apple just have a mess in this files categorising. Even your own personal documents can sometimes be sorted wrongly and they count as other files instead of just documents. What I regularly do is to reinstall the system. Currently the best you should do is to wait for new macOS release which will come in few months and it will remove the old system, so it should help being new and fresh.

      Well 51 GB is honestly not as much, system itself is around 20 GB.. so you have somewhere 30 GB. Check this video it might help: m.th-cam.com/video/u8qd1g4WB9Y/w-d-xo.html

      If you carefully watch the video you will find out it’s not actually true 👨🏼‍💻

    this is a good video but it didnt do anything to the other bar, still takes up half my space. i really just hate computers and wish they didnt exist. books work people. books work better

      Well it the ,,other” space is showing so large, it’s usually not really true. There are just files which are not categorised yet, you have to give it more time and rather review your personal large files. You can watch my previous video about that (th-cam.com/video/5d-UH5byLpA/w-d-xo.html) it is more generally described there, more about cleaning the space than just finding some small hidden files.
