  • Today I have to explain why I decided to sell my 550i instead of keeping it, although it does make such a great car to drive. Let me know what you think of my reasoning in the comments down below, and tell me what we should replace this car with on the channel next!

a little update. We got 23mpg on our drive back to Wisconsin. The E60 ran like a top! The bad: a inattentive driver hit the rear end in Kentucky the tail light exhaust and bumper cover are messed up but Geico should take care of the problem. We got complements on the car every time we gassed up. Chris are you willing to do a 6 series convertible for me fall of 2023?

Hi The E60 (Boujee) is well known around town. It’s just needed maintenance. My wife loves Boujee. This week she is getting new shocks/struts and spring detail. I’ll post pictures when she gets out of the car “spa”. Lol

2006 550i owner here, my DD for a few years. Nice to see this particular E60 get some love! A lot of guys swear by their turbos, but I’m a sucker for naturally aspirated V8s (had an E38 before) and the N62TU is really the pinnacle of that era. Wife calls it the “living room on wheels” because interior finish is so luxurious. (I’m more into the sport suspension with ARS and torquey engine.)
But these are not cheap cars to own, especially with today’s insane gas prices. I mostly DIY maintenance and repairs but have to take her in for a crank-no-start problem right now. Already dreading the bill.

Been a lot time owner of E60 545i with the N62 motor...All the common issues from:Valves stems, alternator bracket seal, rear main seal, kidney gasket behind the tranny, valley pan pipe, footwell module, airbag light like you described, constant valve cover leaks...I've learned to DIY lot of jobs but there are many times I just don't have the time to spend two days working on the car...The car is a great car to drive. Fast, handles well, and still looks the part in today's world as it did 10 years ago. I currently have 265,000 miles on the original motor and tranny and it drives like a beast. My goal is to hit 400,000 and then go Audi or Range Rover...You gotta be an enthusiast keep these car long term or any V8 Bimmer. Enjoyed the N62 content wish there was more content like this out there as detailed as you lay it out.

I get 15-16 in the city with my tuned 335i. And 93OCT also. Sucks sometimes but its actually great on the highway, and also with the stock map its much better on gas.
My brother's E60 530Xi gets an average MPG of 24mpg and its got some power with the 30i spec higher HP. Its been a super solid car and its been reliable. No turbos to worry about and straight-6 is pretty straightforward.
The ride is also really nice considering its the Xi model and no sport package or anything like that, it has the common packages. tech, cold weather, convience, and premium package.

After the E39, this is probably one of the best 5 series ever made. It still looks modern and has good engine options. However, I get why you got rid of it. Especially the big ones like the 550 are not easy to live with.

Bought a 545i and that thing had issues for days got every oil leak, took it to a bmw tech bro found a C clamp holding my thermo to my water pump! (From the previous owner) valve cover gaskets leaking, timing cover leaking, alternantor bracket gasket leaking, front thrust arm bruhsings torn, coolant crossover line seeping, valley pan leaking, and engine mounts collapsed...bro was charging me 10k+ to repair everything and that seems excessive for a car i bought for half the price. I got a 550I and been running like a champ, change your oil every 10 thousand miles and keep up with your maintenance havent done any major repairs on the 550i but i know they can be scary

How are the X5 50i N62's to work on? Is the engine bay bigger because its an SUV and seems slightly larger or about the same? Im looking to get an X5 to be my DD. I have an E92 335i 6MT N54 with some mods now. But i need something that's 4wd and can have a 2" hitch receiver put on the back, for hooking up and pulling a small boat trailer and for my bike using the Hitch Hauler's..
What motor and what year X5 would go for if on a Budget and then maybe what you pick if you had like 8-9k$ to spend and that can basically afford me any of the motors, including the Diesel but as much as i want it, i think i might have to rule it out, unless its super reliable. I want a V8 but i know most of the X5 V8 models all have their own share of problems from this motor to the N63 turbo v8 motor.
I would like to get the N55 version, that way i can get the power, decent MPG's, and be able to lightly mod it and share parts between the motors in some areas at least.. But i know the N55's have some rod bearing issue where i think youd want to replace them almost preventatively so that it doesnt spin a bearing and get Rod Knock.
Then again theres the trusty 3.0si version which has the 275hp version of the N52 I6 NA. But im just worried that being such a big heavy truck that it would feel sluggish. Like i feel like for the time and even now im sure it feels fine but idk seems like it would be better in something lighter like the X3..
I want to be able to take the X5 offroading on the beach so you really need the power sometimes to avoid getting stuck.. Also a turbo high revving motor isnt necessarily the best for that either , but the EWG N55's especially have some super smooth power with the Auto in a 335i compared to the N54 but ive only really driven manuals so far and the Auto in the 530Xi, which isnt XHP flashed yet, ive been trying to convinve him to get and just flash the stage 1 for the faster and more direct shifting alone.
I remember trying out a bunch of AT N55's and at the time i would do the Alpina Flash and coding for people on the forum for like 20$. Was well worth the price at this time.
Anyway after trying the car again after flashing to verify everything is okay and you dont need to reset or recode the gearbox ecu which i did have to do on a few of the newer ones. You just do a VO write to the EGS ecu which is the AT's ecu.

If the issue persists; the ISM (in box under pass cabin air filter) has a failure prone solder joint that mimics bad crank sensor. I chased that for a while with random transmission limp, engine stalls, etc.

    • @frankenstein6071

@@Q-tips2 Thank you for the tip. I have been having those exact symptoms which made me think it was possibly the Crank sensor even though no code of a problem with it.
