  • Today, we're putting my newly aquired 550i on the lift, and we try to figure out where it's leaking from and what problems it hides underneath the hood! Turns out, this thing suffers from some of the more common N62 problems I've encountered before on my old 545i. And just when we think we've found everything, the car starts making a horrible screeching noise, coming from the motor. Come with me as we discover what mysteries lie beneath!

Great leak inspection! Also saw a good one coming from the small Dynamic Drive pump attached to the front stabilizer bar. It’s contributing to the low power steering fluid problem.

Don't forget the rear diff fluid given your miles. I didn't see any other leaks back there but check the dynamic drive pump connected to the rear stabilizer. They also leak. If it's slightly wet or has a very slow drip ...they all do that. Leave it.

Anything vacuum pressure related...crankcase vent valve has one line going down to oil pan usually gets clogged and when intake is forcing vacuum in, while the oil pan vacuum won't release the clog the pressure becomes greater at the oil cap. 😉

That's a check-bulb sequence running on the car during each startup. It sends some pulses of electricity to all the lights in order to "listen" back and see which ones are blown/broken. You don't usually notice it on the halogen bulbs, but the LED's use so little wattage, that they actually light up during this procedure, completely normal! But I understand your thinking! There are no issues with the Brake Switch. E60 equipped with dynamic xenon and/or comfort light package, keep the DLRs (Angel Eyesight) + Brake Lights on even when set to off on light switch. If you go through settings in your idrive there should be an option to turn off DLRs , which would also turn off illumination for the Brake Lights until you use ur Brake of course.
The seat belt/airbag warning is due to bad occupancy sensor in either passenger or driver seat. Either deal with the light in the cluster or replace the seat, bcuz DIY is stupidly frustrating & requires lots of patience.
The Brake Booster seal between the upr timing cover is notoriously known to leak. The Gasket set is cheap under $20 and labor is extremely easy until you get to the reinstall and has to line up the pump to cylinder. However, from the video it don't look like it's leaking, VVT Solenoid seal/O'Ring on both are leaking like they usually do.

  • @dolezaljacob

From my humble opinion, if the N62 is older like 10 years a full disassembly is the go to solution. Most of the seals would be hard as rock at that time. All the pipes just minutes from cracking.

Mines does have a low howl not like yours but a very low pick light howl only on idle. Mines isn’t having that same issue but still an issue I’m curious to see if anyone else is experiencing. To begin with I had the service engine light come on after I started the car. Beforehand I was at work chilling in my car waiting for it to warm up when I accidentally floored the accelerator causing it to redline in park. I was mad but ignored it, let it idle down, moved the car to a different spot, let it warm up until it was time to go back on the clock. Once work was over I cranked it over and 2 lights appeared as well as a message in the idrive center. The lights was the Yellow brake light and Traction control light. The idrive message I think said drivetrain malfunction and to drive moderately 🤦🏽‍♂️. For some reason the car was noticeably faster or more responsive. Normally the car is a little sluggish in the standard drive mode with traction control on. I didn’t want to drive in sport on the way back bc of the lights and idrive warning so I just turned off traction control and got on the eway. Highest I hit was probably 110 and I wasn’t pushing it at all didn’t even notice until I realized I lost traffic. Seriously the car felt different. So I got home parked the car and it sat for 10mins. Went back out to start it up again because I wanted to see if the lights would see be on. And they weren’t…but the service engine soon light came on and the car revved by itself to like 2k maybe 3k rpms and it did that little rev shit on every start up for a week straight then randomly stopped. I checked the code and it was a timing correlation code. Could be a number of things jumped timing, stretched chain, shifted cam, etc. or maybe it just needs plugs or coils bc it’s misfiring fs. Lol misfiring, howling, revving on its own, and the radiator hose just burst, oh and I just had to put a starter in it. My advice to any1 out there don’t get an n62 or a Bmw period 😂.

It’s insane to me that it’s considered “normal” for all BMW engines to burn a significant amount of oil during normal everyday driving. BMW considers it normal for their engines to burn between a quart of oil for every 750-2500 miles driven depending on which engine you have. This goes back to the 1990’s at least. Absolutely crazy. Below is an excerpt from one of BMW’s service bulletins on the issue.
    “Oil Consumption specification:
    - All BMW engines (excluding Motorsport) can consume up to 1 quart of engine oil per 750 miles at any time.
    - Due to the increased engine power, all Motorsport engines can consume up to 2.5 quarts of engine oil per 1,000 miles at any time.”

My Last 2006 550i sport similar to this car maybe burned a quart every 10k miles. I bought it with 170k on it my buddy crashed 6 months ago it it had 270k on it. Had it 6 years it was a great car never left me stranded drove it Califonia to Florida and 10 other 1200 mile road trips. I just picked up another one a 2007 it is burning oil and needs valve stem seals but I got it so cheap might just drive it. Just a quick question if you don't mind me asking - can I pull out the chain tensioner on the N62 and change it for a new one like that?
The story behind the question: The previous owner of my car did some "magic" with red lube sealant around and probably inside the hydraulic chain tensioners and it is leaking oil a bit. BMW manuals are silent about this procedure and no BMW tech could tell me yes or no since they all do a complete rebuild when they have to touch this part.
Thanks a lot up front for any reply :)

    • @TheBimmerBarn
      @TheBimmerBarn  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I understand the concern, but you won't have any issues. I think the new tensioner has to be "primed" in oil before install, but otherwise it's safe to replace while the motor isn't running. Good luck!

Because the BMW manual says that the co-delivered washer should not be used (ISTA, FUB-HIL-HI-130001-A14-Verbau Messkettenspanner) but it also says "Stand März 2014". So I am not quite sure what to do now. @@TheBimmerBarn I bought a 2004 545i in 2017 for a backup vehicle and fell in love with it. I started driving it daily, obviously a lot. But I've basically changed every gasket and oring for the cooling system and anything connected to the engine. The only thing I have not done is the valve stem seals. I started having blue exhaust smoke around 250k. When I did the valve cover gaskets around 275k miles I took a syringe and poured Barrs valve seal conditioner over each valve and let it soak over night. I did it again before I put the covers back on and sealed it up, and I haven't had exhaust smoke since.
I've only had one issue that had the car sitting and me scratching my head. The car would turn over but not start. So I changed the crank position sensor, and realized it was blowing a fuse in the IMV in the computer box under the hood. I thought the IMV was bad so I replaced it. At that point the valvetronic motors were not getting power and I had to get a schematic out that finally led me to the issue. It was the vanos solenoid wiring that was grounding out blowing that fuse which is also the fuse for the cam and crank sensor.
I've done a decent amount of work over all. I did replace the transmission, which I could have avoided by changing the fluid. I've replaced all the suspension components, I just replaced the alternator, I did the cic retrofit and got pretty familiar with inpa, ncs expert, winkfp etc.
But I do believe the n62 engine is very durable as long as you change the oil regular and add seal conditioner, change the coolant regular, and just keep up with it. I would also suggest that when your AC belt goes you get the AC belt tensioner that was installed on X5s. The engine already has a threaded slot to hold it, and you won't have to deal with that stretch belt any more.

@@doobiet If you listen to my engine it sounds like it has a lot of life left, and I keep my car clean and waxed etc. With all the new suspension components I put on including Function & Form type 2 coilovers, I think most people would think I had 100-120k miles. It's not for everyone though. If you dont do the maintenance and most repairs yourself it just wouldn't make sense to own. But that's kinda what has inspired me to keep it. It was really the first vehicle that I did any major work on outside of an oil change. I have been looking around for the supercharger from the B7 or B5, and if I can find one from salvage I'm going to attempt to put it on. We will see. Ive yet to find it separate from the engine.
