I’m old but had the privilege of playing with Edgar and his older brother Johnny back in high school. I believe technology was behind them and they would own the world if they were on the internet. Thanks for playing them. The another one I liked was the “Tobacco Road”, try that one also.
That's very cool. They Only Come Out at Night was one of the first albums I owned after I graduated from The Partridge Family.

He and his brother Johnny were extremely talented musicians and Johnny was considered to be one of the best blues guitarist around!
I had the pleasure of seeing Johnny perform live on numerous occasions. Awesome on the slide guitar.

The Winter brothers were both on another level and could play pretty much anything.
This is the very best reaction video I have ever seen and one of the best songs too. I watch it over and over.

Actually they did. The Echoplex came out in 59 and had a playback Loop.
Even the talk box goes back to 1939.

And my brother-in-law's brother built the first prototype electronic drum set in 1968. And after it was seen in his Studio, he was quickly ripped off. That's another story.
I think by loop he meant sequencer, which was available for synths back then. I believe he just set the envelope generator to infinite sustain or decay, so that the oscillator was outputting continuously (or just bypassed the envelope generator) and had the low frequency oscillator creating the pulsing while manipulating the filter and resonance manually.
The song was originally called the double drum song and was pieced together from different parts like the Frankenstein monster, hence the song title. The guitarist in this video who didn't really get a solo was the terrific Rick Derringer who also played with brother Johnny and had a successful solo career as well.
Saw Edgar and Rick long time ago in Berlin. They also performed Hang On Sloopy, a great hit bei Derringers old band The McCoys.
@@16ploog79 I never saw Edgar live, but I saw Rick solo in the late 70s on a bill with The J Geils Band and Blue Oyster Cult and a couple opening acts. It was a great day under the sun.

@@16ploog79 Yes. The J Geils Band and Peter Wolf especially, had the whole stadium on their feet for the entire show. Magic Dick was amazing on harmonica too. I'd say they probably stole the show but Rick Derringer and Blue Oyster Cult were so good too that I hate to say that.

I remember watching this performance when I was a kid on TV when it took place. I picked up piano at nine years old and I’m 55 now and looking back just watching him on the keyboard but then he was definitely ahead of his time and I like this song very much when I was that age and it was one of the first songs that got me into my instrument other than deep purple of course but I got into them a couple of years later LOL however still this day I cannot read a note of music I just hear it and play it LOL. Love you guys reactions 😁

I seen him with Leon Russell thought they would be two shows but played together instead killer show. If you do not know who Leon is he is a rock icon

This was a huge hit my Sr. year in HS, my first concert was right after graduation in '73 and I saw JoJo Gunne, Savoy Brown and Edgar Winter with Rick Derringer at an outdoor venue. Of course this was the highlight of the show.
Seen him 1978 Texas jam Dallas cotton bowl. I seen almost every band. The first concert I went to was April wine 1973.
I can picture Frankenstein coming to life! Rick Derringer, the lead guitarist, was the best!! He had a tremendous solo career! Edgar could do anything!
Saw them in 74 with Gary Wright, Dream Weaver.

Saw Edgar and Johnny Winter (both albino) when they were on The Worldwide Texas tour with ZZTop and Blue Oyster Cult in August of 1976 at the now torn down may it rest in peace Jack Murphy Stadium. Hell of a show, heat and all.

The funky bass player, Dan Hartman, went on to have several hit songs of his own during the disco era, including the pop music hit "I Can Dream About You" in the 1980s.

Even though the studio version is amazing, this performance is one of the best ever recorded.
The show was called The old grey whistle test , what a show , they would bring bands into the studio and just jam , do song after song , live , loved it

I first heard this masterpiece at the end of my high school days. As you ALL said it was released in 1973, the same year I was released from high school! Jon you are going to dig this ONE! There is a mind melting keytar solo in it!!! Edgar could play several instruments well.... As you three shall see & hear! These dudes worked well together!! YOU said it Jon, "more cowbelll........ Get ready the solo I mentioned is next!!!

Had heard this a million times on classic rock radio/parents music, but was born in 83 so I didn't really know the live performances at all. Holy shit, is he for real?!?!? What a madman! This is great! They are all amazing for that matter. I had always assumed there were like 40 f'n people on stage, GUESS NOT! HA!

Amazingly Johnny Winter, Edgar Winter, and Janis Joplin all attended high school together in Port Arthur. TEXAS 🇨🇱!🤤 Janis was older but when Janis was a senior, Johnny and Edgar and her were in the same school for that year!😲 What a super blues group they could have been!🤯💯🤗❤️✌️

Waaaay back in high school, in 1972, was when I first heard this on the radio and I had the get the 8-track, it was only 4 minutes and 46 seconds long. Since then it has grown to anywhere around 10-12 minutes up to 15 or more minutes. "They Only Come Out at Night" had a couple othe tunes that hit the radio, "Free Ride" and Hangin' Around". Oh Rick Derringer, "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo", produced that album.
I had that album--played the grooves out of it....
If you want to hear Edgar rocking out old school, check out his cover of Chuck Berry's Back In The U.S.A. from his band White Trash on the live album Roadwork... Derringer supplies some killer guitar on that track
That's exactly why he created this song to show all his abilities. Putting all the parts together like making Frankenstein.
An ANALOG synthesizer. I believe that was an ARP. I've played around with one. It's pretty cool to see how the sounds are being made and gives you a better understanding of just what you're doing when you're creating patches with a digital synth.
Love you guys! Best thing about this live performance - not a single BUM NOTE was hit by a single member of the band during the entire song. These were young guys, this was difficult stuff to play. Thanks for covering this one - this is the best channel on TH-cam!

I saw this band about 15 years ago with a free ticket. I was not a fan going in, but when I left I was a huge fan. He is just an amazing performer.
I have seen Edgar three times with his KeyTar... all free shows.
And I've seen his brother Johnny perform once when I bartended at a live rock Club in Upstate New York... he drank absolute... I had to take a bottle to the back room for him.

The Logo at the very start is from the late night BBC live music show "The Old Grey Whistle Test"
It featured many legendary artists and bands over the years. Its host know as Whispering Bob Harris is just as legendary as a TV host music critic, writer and radio presenter.
I was in High School when this came out. I loved the Winter Brothers & was blessed to see Edgar's group play this in concert in 1973. It was great. BTW: The guitarist Rick Derringer played in the McCoys as a teen on their hit "Hang On Sloopy". He went on to solo success with "Rock & Roll Hoochie Koo." The Bassist Dan Hartman also had solo success with the R&B/pop hit "I Can Dream About You."
Even more impressive when you consider the synthesizer technology that was available in 1973.
Rick Derringer on the lead guitar. He was so underrated back then, but not anymore. Rick started his solo career a few yrs. after this, and made his own name for himself with hit songs like "Rock and Roll Hoochie Coo."
All the talk about the musicianship and rightfully so, in all of these Edgar Winter reaction videos to this song.....almost lost in it all, when people are asking in amazement "what did I just see?", is the fact that Edgar took the "idea" of "Frankenstein" and literally, musically recreated the "lab" from the classic story/movie and "created" a veritable "MONSTER" of a song. It's totally insane what he had done here, piecing all of these musical elements together as a literal "musical mad scientist".....Just so wonderful, so surreal. 💖

Edgar wrote this Two Drum Song for and when he was in his brother Johny's group. It was recorded on tape. There were so many splices that someone said that tape looks like Frankenstein. I believe the older amps with tubes would feedback and some artist could control it within reason. Case in point.
I wore out so many 8 tracks and then cassettes of this back then playing this over and over.

great pick - saw these guys in '73 or '74 at one of our local bars in sunderland mass. called the rusty nail. out in the middle of the western mass tobacco fields and held about 300 people. kinda like LOVEBITES - amazing live. the 'nail' burnt down.
I was a kid when this came out and the one that got the album was my Dad . I was used to listen to R& B , all that changed after listening to this one .

@@TheWolfHunterZ yea, watch it again. In that section, the drums hit first and then reverb gets distorted in the synth and speakers,. He's effectivly playing the reverb as an instrument.

I loved this song as a kid. We had a 4 speaker 8 track system and this song had audio that travelled through all 4 speakers. I thought it was the coolest thing.

I love watching "youngsters" getting your mind blown by the talent we had back in the stone age of electrified music! IMO this was the age of "experimentation" . Anything was possible it just had to played with a bit; from Hendrix to Edgar Winter, the Beatles to Pink Floyd. Janis Joplin to Ozzy Osbourne. I was in my late teens in this age and experimentation was everywhere. Edgar Winter was the Mad Scientist, the Dr. Frankenstein if you will. Don't ya just love it when he puts the board on the floor and starts the monster stomp.

Hey Guys. Edgar preformed this song many times over the years. I saw him with Ringo's all-star band at Ringo's 70th birthday show at Radio City Music Hall in New York in 2010. He was still killing it, playing all the instruments just like he did here. Edgar was one of the early synth pioneers. I had this 45 when I was a boy it solidified my rock hard rock Then Metal path and I never went back to the Partridge Family although the show still funny thanks for bringing back the cool memories

Billy Preston was given credit for the first keyboard played like this... a week after he watched Edgar winter do it... Billy was given credit because it was shown live on television.. this show was televised a few weeks later...
Remember the bassist, Danny Hartman, who played in a Harrisburg, Pa band, The Legends. Followed that band everywhere they played(as long as my brother would take me). Danny was born near where I’m currently living in a suburb just East of Harrisburg.

Rick Derringer is on guitar here, he produced many of Johnny and Edgar's albums, also had charted with his own minor hit with "Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo" in 1973... He also produced Weird Al Yankovic's first album, and did the searing guitar solo for Weird Al's first big hit "Eat It" (to replace the one done by Eddie van Halen on MJ's "Beat It")
Jon, if you want that hair you'd have to be Albino; both Johnny and brother Edgar were Albinos from Beaumont, TX. As kids, they had to stay indoors out of the hot TX sun, and this was the result.
I was around when this song first came out; no one knew what to make of it, but it took off; this song is nearly 50 years old!
Edgar ran out of instruments to play on this one, so he decided to play the amps.
Only two members of this band are still with us: Edgar and Rick Derringer. R.I.P. Dan Hartman (bass genius) and Chuck Ruff (one of the fastest drummers ever).

Edgar Winter is a genius, sure this guy came from outer galaxy... just look at him!! jajaja..I'm still impressed by this performance, Whistle Test from BBC, the craziest genius musicians jam TV show ever..sure. Check, please this tune and other classic ones in the 1972 released "They Only come out At Night" album. Frankestein....everything said. The guitar player was the record producer, Rick Derringer, and on drums, the master Chuck Ruff (RIP).
