"this dude was created in a lab"... like Frankenstein. I think it was Edgar Winter that was the first to strap a keyboard into a keytar. If I recall due to Edgar and his brother Johnny both being albinos, the condition caused several vision defects and very high sensitivity to light and sun exposure. While their young school age friends were playing outdoors the brother's albinism forced them to stay indoors. So their focus became playing and experimenting with an assortment of musical instruments
Thats why when you seen them in concert they told everyone ahead of time to not use flash cameras when they came onstage..
Edgar is credited as the first person to strap on a synthesizer keyboard, & inventing term "Keytar". Over the years the idea has evolved & become more sophisticated.
As this was almost 50 years ago, to say that Edgar was ahead of his time would be the understatement of the year. The little fella on the guitar is Rick Derringer. Check out his solo tune "Rock And Roll Hoochie Coo". Good stuff.

I was 17 when I saw them in concert in 1973. Aerosmith failed to show up. I'm 67 now and totally enjoy young guys like you listening to my kind of music.make sure you listen to them sing Tobacco Road.

Polo, thanks for the memories. In my early twenty’s I was fortunate to take in Johnny and Edgar, at a two day concert in a farm field. It was beyond anything. I had a visual and audio position on a tarp and sleeping bags + rain and mud. Nothing and I mean not a thing mattered but the impossible showmanship and talent. I believe this exposed all of the 100K + that never heard of Johnny and Edgar … the farm field audience lit up😎. I will never let that 3/4 hour jam go from my old descending mind. THEN… add the rest of talent in this VERY magical time. This alone was so, so , so , unbelievable . Then …..out walked Ms. Janice Joplin, YES Janice Joplin in her prime, add the drummer from Iron Butterfly Ron Bushy. Janice and Johnny, Edgar Winter, add her band from “Ball and Chain! “. Mesmerized is all I can say for everyone that was attending!✌🏻 🌞 💫

You have to remember that this is at a time when there were no digital electronics, the keyboard and amps still contained vacuum tubes, resistors, and capacitors with only a few diodes.
There are still tube amps made and most rock and roll guitarists use them. I was lucky to see them in an outdoor festival in the middle of Pocono Mountain raceway in 72 along with a bunch of other great bands like ELP, Rod Stewart and the Faces, Three Dog Night, Cactus

My dad had a mean hi-fi stereo system that made our house shake. He would play this song so loud that we could hear it as we walked home from school many blocks away.

Said Winter: "When we were editing it in the studio, back in those days when you edited something, you physically had to cut the tape and splice it back together, so it was all over the control room, draped over the backs of chairs and the couch. We were making fun of it, trying to figure out how to put it back together, saying 'Here's the main body; the leg bone's connected to the thigh bone...' Then Chuck Ruff, my drummer, says, 'Wow, man, it's like Frankenstein.' As soon as I heard that, I went, 'Wow, that's it!' The monster was born."

I was 14 in 1973 and my brother put his headphones on me CRANKED and said listen to this...WOW... Thanks Pat for this and Zeppelin and the Doors. Miss you Bro. So last year I did it for my 9 year old granddaughter, by the end she was banging my desk and shaking her head.

I saw the legendary Edgar Winter in 2017 w/ Deep Purple & Alice Cooper(!) , and Winter was every bit as good as in the 70s, still playing the drums & keytar & singing his brains out! Johnny his brother was legend here in Texas, Bless him
Hahaha!😂 That was your best reaction video ever! Believe it or not, this song got a lot of air time on the radio. Even without lyrics. You can't compare it to anything because there is nothing like it. The sheer raw talent of Edgar Winter. And his brother and the band. We used to love the Star Trek sounding part when he's playing with the mixing board. And some of those scratchy needle on a record sounds? Kinda sounds like to me what they do in rap songs with beats. But at that point in time, no one had ever done anything like this. I listened to this song on the radio but I don't remember having seen this video before this year. It blows me away every single time I watch it. You can't help but bob your head and swing your hair around. I think this kind of music is where the term "headbanger" actually originated.

This was my introduction to rock. I remember it was night and my dad and I were listening to the radio in his beat up red Dodge. Mom wouldn't let me listen to rock at the time, but whenever dad and I were alone we would jam out to the radio. Though I had heard rock before, something about this song was mesmerizing to me. To this day that is one of my favorite memories with dad, and I still have Frankenstein set as the custom ringtone whenever he calls.
Imagine what it was like watching/listening to that when you had a good buzz going! LOL

That, sir, is probably one of THE best live performances you'll ever see, bar none. Edgar Winter and his late brother, blues legend Johnny Winter, are both incredible. Some of us didn't get any talent; the Winter brothers got it all.
Oh hocus pocus by focus could give it a run for the money, in which their 6 minute 47 second song was performed live but being given only five minutes maximum to play it, they played the entire song in double time instead of editing it down and skipping parts.
@@douglasernst9477 Agree, Doug; Hocus Pocus is another great one! Amazing how Focus cut that 7 minute song down and didn't miss a beat. Chicago's live version of '25 or 6 to 4' live at Tanglewood is also a must see.

I heard this was called "Frankenstien" because it was assembled from several different pieces, then one day I was letting the music carry me and I just couldn't stop myself from standing and yelling "It's Alive"!!! Which of course is a line from the classic Frankenstein movie!!!

Thanks so much Polo for taking me back to the 70s. Edgar Winter group was phenomenal group with great musicians on their. They didn't stay together a very long time. Rick Derringer on lead guitar, Dan Hartman on the base who is phenomenal and Chuck ruff the drummer. They all went on to great success after the Edgar Winter group. It was always like a jam session when they've got on stage. Enjoy and thanks for the reaction man.

I heard a DJ accidentally played Frankenstein by Edgar Winter as a B side instrumental that was not supposed to get air time. It went on to become the first Insta go #1.
In the 70s 9th grade music class, Mr.Brooks, our music teacher who wore powder blue leisure suits, would put Frankenstein on the record player and walk out of the classroom. When he didn't want to deal with us. LOL.

Met him briefly in ATL at Hyatt Regency in 1976. It was freezing ass cold, he was wearing all black - striking contrast as he is light/white and translucent. Unbelievably shy was my take-away. His music is expressive and he enjoys the freedom of playing any instrument he gets his hands on. Love this song and the ending is perfect! Didn’t Rick Derringer play in the original? There is a backstory here. Can’t you hear Frankenstein come to life, stomp, the electricity bringing him to life? Listen.

I like the sound effects you got going on now, especially the "rewind" sound effect, never heard anyone else use that. Fun facts... Edger the blond dude all over the place, he wrote the music for the original Scooby Doo cartoon. He also happens to be Harry Mack's grandfather. (OK OK, both fun facts were just made up, lol.)
