You know, this is why I like Adam Savage and people like him. That giddy, childlike glee of just... making something cool, because you want to. That kind of energy, coupled with the experience and knowledge of HOW to do it. It's a recipe for amazing props, toys, costumes and decorations.
LOL, gawd Adam has the coolest colleciton of stuff. Hmm needs a jewel..... 13:44 casually pulls out the Dead Man's Chest from pirates of the Caribbean, like its just a storage box......
"If you give a kid something that looks perfect, they don't get anything out of it except the play --which is significant. But when you give them something like this and they can see "oh! its 1 2 3 pieces of wood" then they understand the structure of it, and that could actually cause them to go make one" As a child that grew up making his own toys, this guy literally speaks to my heart. When Mythbusters was canceled years ago, I was really torn up about it. It's literally one of the few shows I watch on cable; and since then for me it was done, because I didn't get any form of closure from it. Then suddenly stumbling on this channel on TH-cam, and seeing Adam Savage doing all these 1 day builds literally from scratch, it's like my roots being touched all over again. This is so indescribably pleasant for me. Thank you man, for doing what you do
I absolutely love your videos! They take me back to my childhood! I have two brothers, and we were raised 25 miles from the nearest town. Our nearest neighbors were several miles away, and most of our favorite toys were the wooden swords, shields and others that we made ourselves. My mom and dad treated us to a movie a month, and the Memorial Day, 4th of July, and Labor Day marathons at the drive in, giving us a great base of heroes to reenact all over our farm. You guys could definitely came over and spent the afternoon with us!
I remember for one Halloween, I was going as Link, and while my mom helped make the costume, my step-dad carved me a wooden Master Sword, and it was absolutely beautiful. He painted the handle, and I put aluminium tape on the blade to make it look metal, just like Adam did with his sword here. This video took me back to that time.
Reminds me of my dad. My dad and I made soooooo many wooden swords and knives for me when I was a kid. I still have a few of them. They look just as nice as anything you can buy.
Thank you all at Tested for these videos. I was super bummed and bored until I started watching some 1 day builds and those videos have totally lifted my spirits and inspired me.
I am really loving these videos, seeing Adam almost like, in his real natural state, not behind a layer of tv, really love his personality more here. Very fun videos.
Man theres just something about watching Adam meticulously work on these projects that is just so awesome!!!! I also love how he doesnt worry about things being perfect and somehow they always end up looking perfect!
Brings back such memories. I did the same foil tape job with two swords made of 1x2 lumber in Jr High. We used them in a performance at a school talent show where I played a king, and an unworthy knight wanted my daughters hand... because we could not think of a better reason to have a sword fight... all was going great until the knight missed his pre-planned block and I clocked him in the side of his head. Amazingly he stayed in character and shook it off. He never spoke to me again though.
if you start at the botom it will feel beter in hand becauce the edge of the leather will be facing downwards just a tip from someone who handles leadther wraped grips
marek pastyrik OH I didn't know you have first hand experience with Thousands of styles of grips and handles for swords and weapons spanning across the ages. FORGIVE ME MASTER, You are all mighty and better. But for real though, you don't know what the fuck you are talking about. It's kind of funny.
OMG Geek Chic is here in Everett, Washington where I live lol I used to dig around in their scrap wood pile out back at night finding swords that didn't quite make it for one reason or another, but they were good enough for me hahaha I'd be walking around with two or three of those "raw parts," that they had tossed because of one manufacturing mistake or another thinking I was SO cool! It's crazy to see Adam with one of them, I've seen many half made knives and swords in the pile but I've never seen a fully built, finished one until now!
I loved Adam from when i watched Mythbusters years ago. Now that i learned he's not only doing awesome builds, but videos of them, i dream of being able to go and make something with him. Keep being awesome Adam!

Great build as always! You guys should do field trip videos where you go to the stores/shops/various locations that are mentioned during the builds. I'm sure everyone would really enjoy seeing these places and learning about how to buy materials and parts for their own builds. Some of us, and I'm talking about me, are really naive about these sorts of things and could use some pointers. Plus, it would be a great way to bolster local economies and keep these great businesses open for years to come. It's a win-win-win for everyone. Cheers!
If by acting you mean the little parts where he reads a set of pre-written hog wash to promote his show, then ... No. He brings the same level of creativity there that he did here. He would be such a cool guy to be friends with.
v5u7sulh2 I think what he means by acting is the funny-man/straight-man persona he does with Jamie. Adam does the very animated and energetic style which I occasionally find slightly annoying. But from watching tested you see that this is just an act for the Mythbusters show, as he's less animated (but just as enthusiastic) in real life.
...have you even seen the Totoro Costume video? Adam's just holding himself back a bit in Tested because he's usually alone and unlike Mythbusters this isn't just Highlights, this is essentially the entire process.
These videos bring me and my alot of joy and inspiration thank you Adam for being so kind to share your projects and knowledge my next project is gonna be a building a toy box with my son and I want to incorporate some leather and do something that he and I will be proud of! Thank you Adam!
all this just goes to show how much easier it is to make this stuff when you have acess to the correct tools, processes and materials. Making halloween costumes for my kid brother would've been so much easier if I had a tenth of the resources that the Mythbusters/ Adam has.
Lolwut? It's a power drill, a forstner bit, some leather, a fake jewel, and aluminum tape. Nearly everyone has a power drill (or should). Leather, fake jewels, and aluminum tapes should all be readily available at a local craft or hardware store. The only thing iffy is the forstner bits, but again, Adam himself stated that's a $50 investment for a full set of the things, and it's not like there aren't other ways of achieving a similar result.
you think a regular £40 cordless could make that bit work? When I was a kid, do you think I had access to drills, leather, glass jewels and $50 worth of drill-bits? of course I didn't...
RyNsWoRLD Probably. Drills? Yeah, sure, why not? Leather, glass jewels, etc? Sure. Why not? $50 worth of specialized drill bits? Maybe not, but there are other ways to do that.
Trust me, a standard cordless drill would not stand up to the strain using that drill bit would put it under, let alone in the hands of an inexperienced child. And my dad wasn't about to let me near his proper power tools, either. As for leather/ jewels/ aluminium, I didn't even know where I'd get that stuff if it wasn't just lying around. Didn't have the internet as widespread as it is now. Look, whatever, my point is, most kids don't have £150 to blow on a pretend sword project, or access to the right tools to do it properly. I'm sure that the fact that Adam had some of this stuff around his house as a kid contributed not insignificantly to his adult profession.
RyNsWoRLD Sorry, but yeah, they'd do the job. Then you could have asked, or used a phone book even. I have no idea when you're talking about. And my point is I'm tired of people whining about tools. Tools aren't the problem. Laziness, and incompetence are.
VoxelGaming These don't really resemble the master sword. The pommel is the wrong shape, the crossguard isn't right, the hilt is too long, it's missing the "cat's eye" jewel at the crossguard, and the blade is the wrong shape at the base.
It's supposed to be based off Gandalfs sword I believe. It doesn't look remotely close to the Master Sword. Everything in it is the wrong look and design for it.
VoxelGaming I love swords, have none myself but want one. This looks nothing like Links Master Sword. That is fantasy where this looks more real. This wood sword is a long sword though the usually tapper at the hilt where you grab the sword so thick by below the crossguard, and then thin in the middle and then the pommel. So you would grab by the crossguard and then hold grab the pommel. This give more leverage for stronger swings and is how they are meant to be used. This sword is just someone who wanted to make a wooden sword then they just called it "The Hero Sword. So even the Master Sword in Zelda should be a one handed arming sword to make it more realistic.
rlrsk8r1 yeah but still it almost looks like the old school master sword from Zelda 1 and 2. and with the wood finish it gives it the gold look of yhe crosgaurd
This is cool, and the coolest part is.. When I took up swordhandling some years ago, I was working at an autoparts store part time for extra scratch, and found this aluminum tape. In swordhandling, we call these kinds of wooden swords, and some metal swords for advanced classes, 'Wasters' because they'll get beat up, and.. yeah. So I took my broadsword waster, and my bokken (katana waster), and wrapped them in the aluminum tape to give it a metal look. Then covered it with clear hockey tape. The hockey tape is to prevent splinters from sticking out should a waster be damaged, and also to lengthen the lifespan of the waster. My broadsword also has a Maltese cross on the pommel instead of a jewel, like a Templar sword. :P My bokken has a black and white hockey tape grip. I even covered the tsuba (guard) in hockey tape (which is not easy, but looks impressive compared to hard, brown plastic). If Adam Savage uses this kind of technique, I feel d*** good for coming up with it on my own too!!! :D
Geek Chic has made a limited number of these swords available for Tested members, with information here: www.tested.com/art/makers/460154-geek-chic-hero-sword-tested-members/
+Lewis Heslin wow ! didn't you just hear what he said at the end of the video .. I mean he literally just finished saying that you couldn't buy them online
I like to think that in a video like this, Norm represents the average viewer. Showing that if you follow the techniques Adam uses, it isn't too difficult. If he went off on his own and did a crazy design you lose that... teacher/student vibe, which I think really works well.
D Fawx I agree with the both of you. I like how it was presented. Makes me feel less stupid lol Plus Adam has been doing things like this his whole life. I wouldn't even to think to drill a screw in to the handle to keep the leather in place. I hope they decide to make more eps like this, its easy to follow along and if you had the right tools and pieces you could make your own just watching the video.
So glad that he spoke up about Tandy Leather! When I worked for the radio as an account manager, I got them to advertise and they were one of my favorite clients!
Hey! I used to build these kind of swords, but out of exotic woods! I totally agree with the "leave it imperfect" philosophy. I love the look of tool marks on hand made things.
I love this channel. So many awesome ideas. I didn't realize that Adam Savage was such a hobbyist. Should of figured after all the creative myth busters builds.
Wow, I made a knight shield and a stupidly large fantasy sword of my own design when I was in high school. Making both was an awesome experience. I was inspired to find spare parts from work, cut handles from old shopping carts, and piece it all together to make it sturdy and a manageable weight. Today, it would look so filmsy and bulky, but I'm glad I had the right idea to wrap both in aluminum tape. I wish I had the foresight to buffer the shield with steel wool! I always wanted to remake that prop.
I remember back in the day all the items required for sword-making was: a yard stick, 1 (or 2) popsicle stick(s) for the cross guard, and a rubber band or string or Elmer's Glue if you had some, to hold the popsicle stick in place. lol Now that was old-school engineering. But the embarrassing thing about it, you'd be playing pirates with your friends, who all have store-bought pirate sword replicas, and here you are... lmao with this home-made p-o-s, and your friends are like: "Dude, who made that?!" And you answer real fast: "It was my dad, dude! Swear to God, it was my dad who made this!" ...And there was always that one skeptical friend: "I thought you said your dad got his hand cut off at work--" "SHUT UP, TONY!!! Are we playing pirates or what?!"
Silviano Olivares Hell yeah, man! That and an old broom stick! You either unscrewed it or sawed it off from the bristles, wrapped some electrical tape, and you were good to go!
Broom handles with the bristles unscrewed. And oven mitts for hand protection, cuz mom would've killed us if we added anything LOL! Those were indeed the days...
Haha when me and my friends(when we were about 10 or 11) played stuff like that we had some rules set out so no one would get hurt or be stuck with a lame weapon. 1.nothing too sharp and no nut or head strikes or chest hits the few times some of our girl friends joined in. 2.Everyone had to approve the weapon(as in if it was really sketchy and we thought it could hurt someone it wouldn't be allowed. 3. You had to make it with things in my dads shed. One time I made the most badass bow that had long tips(for hitting people with) out of PVC and some carbon rods(to stop the pvc folding) that shot blunt nerf dart tipped arrows(I think I might have a picture) felt like getting shot by an airsoft gun(I never drew the arrow fully duh) and at first everyone was cool with it but after a while when everyone was getting tired etc. they decided it was too dangerous.
Scott Wild When I was a kid, we just found dead palm fronds on the ground, torn off the leaves, and ground the ti on the cement. They were the closest thing to really we could get. It hurt when you got hit and they could cut you like a knife. "You didn't hit me! "Then why are you bleeding?!" "SHUT UP, TONY!!"
For those who couldn't quite hear the name of the leather shop he mentions or couldn't find it on google, it's Tandy Leather www.tandyleather.com/en-usd/home/home.aspx
Just to let ya know, the reason he says apply a lot of downward force is because it's a screw drawn bit. Meaning it pulls itself into the wood to help cut.If you don't it will "Pull" the wood thread it cuts out and will stop cutting. GREAT bit for cutting smooth bore holes. A must have!
I always find Adam's work table awesome. Being a modified pool table that he makes costumes and props on, it kind of brings together an interesting notion of work and play with how he seems to approach life.
+JakeTheRipper 73 Of course he has. But we want to watch him build one on-camera. I think it would be cool if he did something like that as a challenge. Say, he has a week to collect parts to build a custom lightsaber. OT style: he can attach stuff together and chop stuff down to fit, but no machining custom pieces. Hell, he could probably do it in one day. I bet a guy like Adam has enough vintage flash handles and greeblies hanging around his shop to build 8 or 9 lightsabers.
It's a bit more difficult to do, but whenever I do wraps, I try to tuck the free end under the wrap. There's a few different ways to do it, and I think it just looks seamless and clean. If I ever need to tack something down, it's usually furniture tacks with a little CA glue under them, and I aim for some kind of pattern so it looks like it's by design as much as by necessity. But that's just the way I do it. Adam's stuff always looks great and I learn something in every one of these build videos. Keep on making stuff guys!
Also works when you buy a new set of leather boots. I would always buy a pair 1-2 width sizes too small, soak them in warmish water then wear them until they dry. Don't walk around in them as they dry and try to sit in a chair where you can keep your feet flat on the ground. I normally would wait for a day that I could watch sports on TV. You'll have the best fitting boots you will ever own....until the next pair you do it to.
use the paper that the tape came off to smooth out the tape...its how we do it installing ductwork...and you allways start at one end that way you push the bubbles out
Nicely done. The aluminized tape is duct tape, used in HVAC for sealing seams. Dig around in craft stores and you may find it in gold or copper colours as well. For old school ways of doing this type of thing dig around in Chest of Books or the Boy Mechanic.
It is amazing to watch a master prop-maker in action, even for a simple mod like this. Thanks so much for doing such an honest, un-edited video! This is wonderfully helpful! *clicks subscribe*
Maybe this is totally n00b to ask, and has been covered a lot of places, but I'm just curious as to what Adam is spraying onto the glue every time he glues something...? I've seen him do it in other episodes as well.
I love how excited he is hahaha at 14:10 I couldn't hide my grin anymore hahah that's so cute. I like how accurate he is and how he looks out for the details .o. I would love to do this as well, maybe someday I will :D
This video is just another perfect example of why Adam is like. . My hero. xD I'll never get to meet him, or talk to him, but I'm just happy he exists.
What bothers me about those swords is that Orcrist is only perhaps 2/3rds or less of how big it's meant to be, and Sting is far too big even when scaled to match a hobbit.
I think the differences are probably a half assed attempt at avoiding copy right claims, just like how he pointed out they all have unique names as they don't have the right's to the originals.
+1 Saw it directly and thought, someone had to have added a comment about it, and yea its the same. Not the actual one used in the movie but, yea you get it. :>

If only I had known about this a few years ago when I was doing sword fights in stage plays... That tape is GOLDEN.

VoxelGaming it looks like the four sword from the older zelda games
Dang, that leather cutting was just...satisfying!
One word. Envy
My bokken has a black and white hockey tape grip. I even covered the tsuba (guard) in hockey tape (which is not easy, but looks impressive compared to hard, brown plastic).
If Adam Savage uses this kind of technique, I feel d*** good for coming up with it on my own too!!! :D
Can you buy these swords online? i cant find them on their website..
Geek Chic has made a limited number of these swords available for Tested members, with information here: www.tested.com/art/makers/460154-geek-chic-hero-sword-tested-members/
Tested Okay, cool! One of these would make a perfect present for my brother.. and maybe myself, too ;)
Tested "...will be for sale to Tested Premium Members first"
Does this mean non-premium members have a chance at ordering one too? :)
+Lewis Heslin wow ! didn't you just hear what he said at the end of the video .. I mean he literally just finished saying that you couldn't buy them online
+Lewis Heslin Just get a wooden waster for HEMA practice... They cost a whopping 10$ in here.
The part where you're cutting the leather strip, was just so satisfying to watch. It was like slicing through butter.
You have no idea how jealous I am of your job.
Don't be jealous. Find a local drama club or class, and help them make their props.. become their prop master.
The cutting of the leather is sooooo satisfying to watch!
Norm doesn't seem very creative.
But who would, in comparison to Adam?
Lovely video.
Holy crap Adam is fast.
I don't like Norm - normally. But he did a better job this time ;)
***** I liked the screw. I liked how the sword came out too.
It didn't really affect me much but thank you.
***** Because they don't have a brass rivet gun?
***** Chill bro, its a sword you saw on youtube, don't get so offended by it haha
Adam is such a great guy... We need more people like him.
Its fun to see how the child in Adam comes out when he does these kind of things. :)
Frodo is that you haha. I think that's the case with many of us. I just built a trebuchet for a video and it made me so happy haha
Hey! I used to build these kind of swords, but out of exotic woods! I totally agree with the "leave it imperfect" philosophy. I love the look of tool marks on hand made things.
ADAM HAS THE POWER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You guys rock and your passion is contagious. Which is circular logic.
I love the fact that he just randomly has Davy Jones' chest lying around.
It would be so freakin cool to spend the whole day with Adam just showing you how to do stuff his way. This guy is lucky!!
13:44 just noticed that the work bench is a pool table
Wow! Thank you for making me feel like a little kid again. This was great!

I love this channel. So many awesome ideas. I didn't realize that Adam Savage was such a hobbyist. Should of figured after all the creative myth busters builds.
I wish Adam Savage was my dad :O
Wonder what your dad would think about that.
TheBatmanFan Mike Dat Batman Cover really matches with yo post
TheBatmanFan Mike Maybe his dad is dead or gone.
skeggjold gunnr but he would be rich
skeggjold gunnr You seem to know what you are talking about so imma shake my head and agree with you :D
THIS HAS MADE ME SO HAPPY, I feel like I'm doing something right knowing that Adam shares my love of HVAC/Aluminum tape!
Where would be the best place to find Jewels like the ones Adam has collected?
Wow, I made a knight shield and a stupidly large fantasy sword of my own design when I was in high school. Making both was an awesome experience. I was inspired to find spare parts from work, cut handles from old shopping carts, and piece it all together to make it sturdy and a manageable weight.
Today, it would look so filmsy and bulky, but I'm glad I had the right idea to wrap both in aluminum tape. I wish I had the foresight to buffer the shield with steel wool! I always wanted to remake that prop.
\o/
One time I made the most badass bow that had long tips(for hitting people with) out of PVC and some carbon rods(to stop the pvc folding) that shot blunt nerf dart tipped arrows(I think I might have a picture) felt like getting shot by an airsoft gun(I never drew the arrow fully duh) and at first everyone was cool with it but after a while when everyone was getting tired etc. they decided it was too dangerous.
when i was a kid i had one that was a piece of chrome car trim that was just simply wood pegged to a piece of wood for a handle
I gotta get me a set of those drill bits he's using.
Can we have Adam build a lightsaber?
yes! I agree
He has....
I bet a guy like Adam has enough vintage flash handles and greeblies hanging around his shop to build 8 or 9 lightsabers.
he recently did for the knights of ren cosplay he did with thebrokennerd
He and Jaime built two of them on mythbusters
It's a bit more difficult to do, but whenever I do wraps, I try to tuck the free end under the wrap. There's a few different ways to do it, and I think it just looks seamless and clean. If I ever need to tack something down, it's usually furniture tacks with a little CA glue under them, and I aim for some kind of pattern so it looks like it's by design as much as by necessity.
But that's just the way I do it. Adam's stuff always looks great and I learn something in every one of these build videos. Keep on making stuff guys!
Watching the leather wrap.. Aren't you supposed to soak the leather in water? Then wrap it wet , as it dries, it gets very tight?
yup was thinking that myself, plus a better design than just round an round would do alot
raw leather yes but that has already been treated
no, Robert your wrong. treated leather also. I've mounted plenty of skin banjo heads to know. you wrap leather wet, when it dries it gets tight.
Chris Pellatt
id wear new steep capped bots down the beach an in the water, sand wasnt to god tho
Man, I really want a workshop where every tool is my favorite tool, too! Love this channel ;)
use the paper that the tape came off to smooth out the tape...its how we do it installing ductwork...and you allways start at one end that way you push the bubbles out
Nicely done. The aluminized tape is duct tape, used in HVAC for sealing seams. Dig around in craft stores and you may find it in gold or copper colours as well. For old school ways of doing this type of thing dig around in Chest of Books or the Boy Mechanic.
Is it just me or is that chest a replica of the dead mans chest from Pirates 2
It is
It is amazing to watch a master prop-maker in action, even for a simple mod like this.
I don't know the name or brand. All I know is that it speeds up the glue drying process.
hm, ok, thanks!
***** I apologize I don't know more.
I love how excited he is hahaha at 14:10 I couldn't hide my grin anymore hahah that's so cute. I like how accurate he is and how he looks out for the details .o. I would love to do this as well, maybe someday I will :D
14:13 "nah thats ugly" lmfao
This video is just another perfect example of why Adam is like. . My hero. xD I'll never get to meet him, or talk to him, but I'm just happy he exists.
"let it go without letting go"-Adam Savage 2014
building props is literally the best thing ever to watch
What bothers me about those swords is that Orcrist is only perhaps 2/3rds or less of how big it's meant to be, and Sting is far too big even when scaled to match a hobbit.
I think the differences are probably a half assed attempt at avoiding copy right claims, just like how he pointed out they all have unique names as they don't have the right's to the originals.
Watching these dudes geek out is awesome.
PLEASE DO A FULL VIDEO OF ADAM'S MAN CAVE
I've met people in the past who I thought had everything in their workshop but Adam has a whole new level of everything in his workshop.
anyone else that the treasure is the chest from Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead mans chest
+KPX addiction Ow yes i have seen it too.
Isn t that a cool looking chest or what?
+KPX addiction yeah looks like it, it's no jar of dirt though.
+1 Saw it directly and thought, someone had to have added a comment about it, and yea its the same. Not the actual one used in the movie but, yea you get it. :>
I'm 95% sure that it is, it looks exactly like it
I could watch this stuff all day long, love it
I feel like I'm watching a father and his Asian son make crafts together.
they are really lucky their workshop is like a giant toy box I love it. keep up the good work guys.
