  • We're in for a treat today--Adam shares the story of his Star Trek Captain's Chair, which he became obsessed with building from scratch after acquiring an insufficient replica. With the help of friend Jeremy Williams, Adam spends a day wiring in the electronics to bring his new Enterprise command chair to life. After much problem solving and troubleshooting, the effort pays off in a big way!

      Adam Savage great build on Star Trek Captain seat I bet you wouldn't shopping or would love this but I'm glad to see that you have completed it also found it educational and very technical to do but I'm glad your friend is there with you all the best in the new season and have an excellent Christmas kcb third son of Elvis Presley

      BlobVanDam the magic of editing. this video alone took at least 2 days of building and 2 weeks of waiting on stuff to come in. i assume he uses a typical work week of monday to friday for actual work and tries to have one day a week that he uses for personal. thats what i try to do, and i fit in some extra work where i can.

    Adam. I'm picturing the next Star Trek chair could be the life-support chair where Captain Pike uses blinking lights to communicate. It could move around using a joystick underneath the top. You could simply sit in it stone faced with the burn makeup and mouth open looking like Captain Pike as you putter around Comic Com using the joystick. That would be EPIC on multiple levels. You could make it extra cool by being able to play audio of Captain Pike.

    Um to say this is straining the meaning of "One day Build" (2 guys talking for week beforehand then 3 guys working for 8 hours on one day and then reconvening weeks later....all in order to tweak an already completed project that, itself took more than 11 days) is a galactic understatement. It cannae b' done cap'n!!! And to say "the wiring" is a one day build is like saying the last mile of a marathon is easy. There is no point to wiring up a a chair...WITHOUT THE CHAIR. That said, Adam is outstanding and all is forgiven! Great vid.

    I feel what is most entertaining about watching all these one day builds is the energy and joy Adam has every time. It just makes something that is already interesting into something you can spend hours watching....which I just did XD

  • @pssnyder
    @pssnyder 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    What I'd love to see with some of these builds is the actors reactions to seeing them. Like get Shatner in the shop to take a seat and geek out over how awesome Adam's work is. Or better yet...Harrison Ford to get that blaster in his hands! Adam would probably be geeked but I think the actors would be even more reminiscent and emotional about reliving the feeling of those props after 20-30 years.

      Speakers + amp , Powersupplies, Electronics, Wires first
      speakers plus amp is around few hundred and you can get it cheaper, powersupplies lets have 2x 20 amp 50 $ each, the arduino is dirt cheap say 30 $ to get all the breadboards etc, leds and other electronics around 100 $. this sub totals to 380.
      now the chair, wood, leather upholstery around few hundred bucks, the custom molds and custom switches some hundreds more. that sub totals to 400.
      so 380 and 400 makes 780$ before factoring in labor.
      Which is then the option of finishing the thing or learning every single used technique first. Heavily simplifying material is 1/3 of total costs so that gives us an estimate of 2340$.
      Adams shop, the cost of an electrical engine and a salary for a shop assistant not included.
      If i would make this i would set a budget of 3k and order some of the stuff prefab to compensate for the lack of wood shop.

    I’m a junk dealer from Mississippi, and the captains chair from Trek was built around a mid century chair by the Madison furniture company in Canton Mississippi. I’ve actually had a couple of their pieces, one was a giant turquoise sofa that was from the same line as Kirk’s chair. It’s all super collectible now of course.

    Adam Adam Adam very cool. Take it your a Star Trek fan. I must share my Star Trek back ground with you. Let me start with my dad ,well he was the Gorn Captain in the episode Arena. He was also on several other episodes of Star Trek. My father was a stuntman. I remember he came home from work with a box full of tribbles. We threw them around like they were Nerf balls. We didn’t really think about what they were at the time. I was working at Paramont studios in the 90s .I was a prop maker/carpenter and I met a retired soundman who worked there during the filming of Star Trek. He told me after they shot that episode all of the dumpsters on the lot were full of tribbles. Now my experience with Star Trek the next generation was model building. I had just gotten out of the Marine Corps and a friend of mine called me and asked if I was interested in helping build a model for Star Trek. I had always build models I still build models some of my models are on display in the library at the El Toro Marine air station. I took the job and found out we were building the Borg spaceship for the episode Q Who. I also help build the hull of the enterprise for the close-up of the decks being cord out by the Borg. I also had the awesome experience of meeting Gene Roddenberry! Kim Bailey the owner of Starlight Effects introduced me and told Gene that my dad was Bobby Clark the Gorn Captain.Gene took my hand looked me in the eye and said that was the most popular creature to ever appear on Star Trek and tell him hello .Anyways I just wanted to share that with you because I’m damn proud of that and not many people can say that they did that and that their dad was the Gorn!Thank you for your videos I do find them entertaining.
