Review: 2022 Acura MDX A-Spec - The Enthusiast's Pick

  • I spend a week with the all-new 2022 Acura MDX A-Spec to see how it compares to its competitors. Like the previous MDX, this retains the crown of being the handling king in the luxury 3-row class thanks to a completely new platform and suspension design, combined with Acura's fantastic Super Handling All-Wheel Drive. Beyond the performance aspect, the MDX is also very nice, with fairly good refinement and luxury for the segment, even if it isn't best-in-class in those respects. It does have an edge over most of its competitors though with more space than the others, especially in the 3rd row, which now has over 2 more inches of legroom than before. With an as-tested price of $58,625, it also is a great value and undercuts almost all of its competitors. What do you think of the 2022 MDX? Thanks to Acura for providing this vehicle to review.

Bought one a few weeks ago. We honestly weren't sure what we were looking for other than something that we could throw some stuff in the back and wouldn't make me want to slit my wrists while driving. The wife had a 2015 Explorer that I absolutely hated to drive because it was front wheel drive even though it was AWD. After a lot of research we narrowed it down to the GV80, Nautilus, Telluride, and the MDX. Long story short every vehicle had something that appealed to us, but if we sat down and made a checklist of everything that was important to us and rated it the MDX graded out the overall highest. We were actually ready to go with the GV80, but we couldn't find a Prestige trim model in the color we wanted within 500 miles and to be really honest we thought that it was a bit of a risk to buy Genesis's first attempt at an SUV. The other thing is that in theory we want a lot of luxury....we've done the Mercedes and the Jaguar thing.....the problem is that we get too protective and obsessed with them to the point that we don't want to put stuff in them that may make the dirty or scuff them up. The MDX is nice enough without feeling like I have to put on white gloves to use the damn thing. The GV80's interior felt like I was going to have to come up with a whole cleaning strategy to maintain the interior.
Anyway it's been a few weeks that we've owned it and the only thing I don't care for is the true position touchpad....I still hate it but I can use it. The steering and handling is fantastic with the SH AWD, the 360 camera is not the absolute best, but better than Lincoln, and the ELS stereo is really, really good. The 16 position seat is very good (love the adjustable bolsters) and it's just fun enough to drive. It feels like you are driving something smaller.
The fact that we were able to tick off all the boxes for what we wanted and come in thousands less than we expected to pay is just icing on the cake. Would I prefer the low end torque of the turbo charged SUV's out there? Yes. Do I feel like I'm missing anything when I'm driving the MDX? No. Not at all.

My mom has a ‘16 and this is definitely a huge step up! Yes, I see some CX-9 in the styling, and that infotainment seems like it has a steep learning curve, but love that they kept the NA V6 (though a hybrid system would be a nice addition to fill in some low end torque and improve the fuel economy). Job well done overall, though, and I have no doubt this’ll be a sales success for them.

If we factor a loss of 1-3mpg since he is driving in cold weather, thats still horrible compared to 90% of Midsize SUV's. I think the Type-S will get either equal or better mpg, at least for highway miles.
I've considered a Tesla or plug in hybrid suv in the next 2-3 years. 91 octane in Southern CA is currently at $4.12 a gallon and I'm sure in the next 5-10 years that price is just going to increase.

I could see your frustration at the end because at this price level, no heated steering wheel available. I see even a bigger problem than that. I am a consumer. I want to get this version A-Spec and I would like to have have Heads up display, heated steering wheel, different style wheels, different leather colour and I am willing to pay $2,500.00 extra for these features. Well, I guess Acura doesn’t want to make that extra money because they don’t give me this option. Are they satisfied in making less money? Probably. I am finishing the second 3 year lease of a BMW X3 and I tried to see other brands in the market but for these reasons I am continuing with BMW for 3 more years, it will be 9 and probably 12, 15 years down the road. Can someone explain to me how is it possible that a car company turned me away because I want to give that company more money? When I want to spend more money because I want a different leather colour or a different wheel size or colour or extra features, BMW has plenty of options for me. They want my extra money, they welcome me. Here with Acura is the opposite. From a business prospective, how is that is actually possible that I got turned away from this brand because I want to give them more money?

I'm still not convinced either way... The GV80 with the 3.5T is priced well a bit better looking than the MDX and a more luxurious interior. The MDX has the better 3rd row, better resale, and the SH-AWD is indeed great ( current prior gen MDX owner). Acura has s better dealer network compared with hyundai and availability should be better. You compare the MDX advanced to the GV80 top spec but that has a 3.5T where this is 3.5N/A I'm wondering if the S type will be closer to the top spec GV80 like for like.
