In my opinion, It’s definitely the best looking 3 row Mid-size SUV/Crossover, there are too major issues, 1: it desperately needs a hybrid powertrain, MPG on the 3.5L NA V6 is really bad, I constantly hearing many owners saying it only gets 16-18 MPG, which is worse than the City EPA MPG, the gas is really expensive right now, it doesn’t make sense for Acura not to introduce the hybrid powertrain. 2: like you just said, the screen needs to come forward few inches, and give us the touch control, it doesn’t hurt to give people both options, especially most people prefer the touch screen than the true touch pad. If Acura fixes both these issues, I have no doubt that its sale will boost.

AP, Just my new MDX Advance in Fathom Blue Pearl. It is exactly as you and others have described about the Acura. I drive it in Normal Mode for the most part, However, when you select Sport Driving Mode and select Sport Drive, hold on to your Hat - almost a sports car feel. You don't emphasize the fact that although it is a Big car, it Does NOT drive like one. Agreed, the TTP InfoT system should have been done like Lexus: Include Both a touch screen and the TP. But, some of the functionality is assumed in the Steering wheel controls. The most used is your Phone, Music, Navi - and with the HUD , everything is more easily accessed with the Steering wheel controls. I shopped this and agree: "The MDX is the True Winner".

Personally I use the steering wheel controls for switching stations volume etc, almost everything, instead of touching the screen on our new 2020 Civic Sport, So I don't think that pad would be too much of a problem for me.

Great presentation. Keep in mind, the last time Acura took a risk when it comes to exterior styling, all of their offerings wound up "beaked".

    • @dougnyc8324
      @dougnyc8324 3 ปีที่แล้ว +8

I'd like to think that I am a substance over style kinda guy but that Acura beak was an absolute deal breaker for me. Personally, I like the way this MDX looks. Doesn't approach the Europeans in terms of style but I vastly prefer it to the Lexus and Genesis styling. To me Genesis looks like it's trying way to hard to mimic an abstract notion of European ultraluxury and ends up looking like tacky poser as a result.

@@dougnyc8324. I just got my new MDX Advance, and I can't fully express how Pleased I am with my choice. At 70 YO, I feel like a 12 year old at XMAS getting my new Cowboy Gun with a strap on Holster ( well in those days, that was a Big Deal ). I shopped the "europeans" BMW X-5, Audi Q-7, Volvo XC90, Genesis QV80, and looked at the new Infiniti QX60 (which is very much delayed to market and has NOT been driven by Reviewers to date . However it is a direct Brother to the new Pathfinder). Fully load those aforementioned cars to compare apples to apples with the MDX Advance, and the MDX is the clear winner for the Buck. Love is a strong word which I reserve for Family and Friends, however, I REALLY LIKE this car. For ANY Money, it is a truly a Substantive Vehicle, with very comfortable front seats , a 16 way power adjustable Driver's seat including a Thigh Extender which I welcome immensely. Put this Car into Sport Dynamic Drive Mode, select DS on the wonderful 10 speed AT, and you will see what I mean. And with SH-AWD , SHAWDY as it is nick-named, is one of , of not, the Best AWD Systems out there ... I got the Fathom Blue Pearl exterior with Graystone Leather Interior. The FBP exterior is a rare color, which is the way I Like it, not just following the Crowd with the Grays / Silver / Blacks variants. The color looks different in different lighting and viewing angles - like the Fathoms of the Sea!!

One week into it. SHAWD tech package. Got it all figured out. Just use the left scroll on steering to change radio presets. Wireless android auto working with pixel phone but not other android phones even if Android 10. Apple CarPlay worked on IPhone 10 and 13.
Auto idle shutoff is annoying. Defaults to ON at every startup. Mandated looks like.
Sport mode is really great. Becomes a Lexus in comfort mode (boat, lol). Handles the bumps in road really well.
Automatic braking works great, triggered unexpectedly one when car in front of me suddenly cut me off. Flashed brake on the gage cluster and braked before I did.
I actually like the two touch pads. Very intuitive. Can have maps on Acura system and the phone as well. Toggle radio and maps between large and small screen.
Can’t wait to take it on an extended cross country road trip!!

Just drove the top trim 2022 MDX and 2022 RDX back to back three days ago and was pleasantly surprised by both. MDX actually looks extremely attractive in my opinion. However it also surpsised me how bigger the MDX is now compared to the second gen (I own a 2008 MDX). They inflated the cars so much to a point when the new 2022 RDX is very close to the size of my 2008 MDX (a couple of inches smaller, but very close). I too noticed the suspension issue you mentioned for MDX. Happy to report it's missing in RDX - RDX is much more compliant and handles bad pavement noticeably better (it also has adaptive suspension in the top trim I tested).

I love the design and TouchPad! I think Acura did a great job at this price point. This car feels special, especially in the A-Spec trim with red interior. You will pay 10-15k more for a lot of these features with other manufacturers. Genesis is charging a 5k market adjustment on all their vehicles right now. While the Genesis is a nice vehicle, i am not willing to pay over sticker for something when I am not sure about reliability. The Genesis should not cost more than an established brand like Acura. These negatives are all subjective.

Eh this car is beautiful as is, it’s probably my favorite looking crossover.
As far as the touchpad, it’s fine. I really like it, easy to use, no greasy finger prints, safe….its actually easier to use when the car is moving unless your a complete spaz.
I agree with the gloss black, it’s just too much, but scratched? How? I’m not touching it, & it’s not getting scratched if your cleaning it with a micro fiber cloth.

Nice review. Up close I have noticed some build issues with the hood fitment and tailgate. Perhaps these are early production builds. Inside at first glance its really nice but after spending some time looking around inside there is some cheap plastics which would look at home in the CRV. No heated wheel until out spend over 60k? Looks like a Mazda CX-9 IMO. Give it a year and when inventory levels get back on track and some discounting is available it will be a good buy

@@brianping3105For 68k, it should have more power. It’s very underpowered for it price. It’s 10 speed is also a hit or miss.
I’m also worried with latest build quality as many have complained in the groups lately. This whole parts shortage have forced the company to find alternatives for electronics and it’s not working out well for some users.

The suspension objection to me is not bad at all. The steering wheel I can manually adjust it in the individual mode in which the suspension can also be adjusted to the preference. The infotainment system at first I do feel ignoring but after some minutes to get used to it, I think I like it that way. So overall, I will give the MDX 90 from 1 to 100. The only objection I have is the gas consumption. It only gives me around 15 MPG in city driving. Thanks for your honest review!

For the price on Acura TLX or RDX and MDX should be included.
Also all trim models should have remote start on key not on an phone app that you have to pay for. 🤷🏻‍♂️🥴💰

I like the 2022+ MDX a lot, other than the controls for the NAV/entertainment system AND the lack of hybrid/PHEV options.
    >300 HP & >30 MPG would be a good target. AND hopefully, the battery pack doesn't displace the spare tire and associated tools.
Maybe Acura could fix these issues on a mid-cycle update AND add HVAC vents for the 3rd row.

I own a 2011 Base MDX with SH-AWD and for my year model, lots of features were standard not to mention 3.7V6 with 300 HP, which is a pretty sweet engine. 105k miles later and my car performs just as it did when new. Reliable, well built, mine was build in Japan at that time. Ride and handling excellent with a good a mount of HP to mive a 2.5 ton vehicle in a nimble manner. Already i am considering a 2024 MDX, as i want to see what Acura will do to their latest deesign. I am either at a brand new advance model or a used Type S, will have to test drive both to aee the difference. I expect to keel my old MDX as my daughter really like the car better than our 2016 CRV touring edition.

I like reviews from a person with an engineering background who explains why things are the way they are in layman's terms. I have to wonder why Acura doesn't have an engineer of your caliber on staff so they can avoid having jittery suspension issues, etc. I do have to nitpick about your 3 negatives, however. I heard 5 negatives: jittery suspension over rough surfaces, numb steering, touchpad/no touch screen, too much piano black and overall exterior design. Btw, I've read on an Acura MDX owner board complaints about the leather seats wrinkling likely due to the long vertical stretches of material without having horizontal seams.

Also there are some basic features that should be included and not incremental uncharges, for a car that claims to be luxury..remote start, rear hatch kick open, etc.

A Man, put it back on Your Shelf !! I have mine for 2 months and I was hesitant about the TTP too. In fact, that is why I leased a 2019 MDX vs the 2019 RDX (new model at that time), bc of the TTP which turned me off. Now, after going a bit of a learning curve (I'm a YOUNG 70 year old Retiree :):) who always liked gadgets, digital and analogue) , I have become accustomed to the use of the TTP. The MDX Advance in Fathom Blue Pearl with a Graystone Interior is one of , if not the best car I have ever purchased (leased). I refrain from using the word Love for things, reserving that for People, so I will say this I REALLY LIKE THIS CAR !! The redesign is great: Muscular looking (of course that is subjective), the newly designed platform / suspension handles extremely well ; a 10 Speed AT that has virtually eliminated any Lagging - it is always in the Right Gear; luxurious interior ; a Provided Light Show (Advance model ); LED lighting everywhere; steering is generates the right "feel" on the road, yet parks very easily; and I could go on some more; Oh Yeah .... The sound system absolutely the BOMB (16 speaker ELS in the Advance). You would be hard pressed to get a better Total value of the $$$$$ of a SUV of this caliber. BMW, MB, Audi, Volvo, will cost you Thousands more for a comparably equipped SUV in this class - MId sized SUV. The only one you may want to look at is the new Infiniti QX60 , but the Autograph Model is about $1K more - it has an over the top Interior and does include a Touch Screen. I presume that Acura has invested many $$$$$ into their TTP system which is going into all their upcoming cars (probably Honda too). A dual system - TTP and a Touchscreen would have been IDEAL .

One question about the Adaptive Suspension : is it always on? In my 2019 MDX , it was only engaged in the Sport Driving Mode and with 45 Ratio tires in the 2019, it made the ride too harsh. The 2022 has 50 Ratio Tires that DOES make a difference.in ride characteristics. In a 2019 MDX Loaner while in for service on my car, it had 50 Ratio tires , so when engaging the Sport Driving mode , it had a less harsh ride over the Bumpy roads.

I think mdx can take a back seat when it comes to raw power

I drove a brand new 2023 mdx from the dealer’s lot. Did not like it, but maybe it is just me expecting too much from a luxury car. The materials inside are nice and appealing. But something that first stroke me is that I could hear the engine inside of the cabin all the time, at any speed, very distinctive roar penetrating to the cabin which does not sound appealing for that level of a car. Engine noise isolation is weak. Next is the infotainment system and overall interaction with the car. I don’t understand, but the engineers and designers at acura are out of this world. Super un-intuitive, super glitchy and awkward interface. The touchpad is a separate piece to discuss, but having no touch capability on the screen and instead have this awkward touchpad is an unpleasant surprise for me. The scroll nob selector is something that the infotainment system is screaming for if the screen is non-touch. Wireless charging works for a short period of time even without the case, but then stops for no reason. Apple CarPlay with that touchpad is the worst experience to have. Another thing i noticed is the noisy rattling sound of the steering wheel adjusting motor. It rattles on a brand new acura. Maybe it was that particular car, but I did not enjoy the experience that much.

I’ve owned the advanced MDX for one year and the main negative I have is the auto stop start. You have to turn it off every time.
The suspension rides wonderfully to me and I came from Lexus
    Very satisfied with this purchase

Read somewhere that upcoming Type-S MDX will have air suspension, that should probably solve the bouncy suspension issue.

I don't believe it's going to have the air suspension actually, but anyhow, they can fix this by re-calibrating the suspension components

The J-series engine was introduce in 2000 and it's bullet proof. It was use on all TL, TLX, and some Accords. They made some improvements over the years and its a very reliable engine. One thing that I hate though is the timing belt. Why can't they use chain just like the Toyota so you don't have to worry about it specially when towing 5000 lbs capacity. I hope they improve the rear crankshaft seal as well as that's prone to leak just before you hit 100k miles.

I myself like Mr. Chao was in auto OEM R&D and have been involved the industry for the past 18 years (now in government), and I greatly appreciated his review of the MDX! A unique and differentiated review from an industry insider, I must add. BTW, I laughed when he mentioned about the problem with HMI that forces you to use a pad as the means for UI. I remember that Honda had asked a major IT firm also an auto supplier (strong in IVNS) to help them with IVIs about 2 years ago. Too bad this MDX will not have a remedy implemented. As an Acura owner, this lack of interest or attention on UI is critical, as I would rather go with German product to replace my aging RDX. Again, thanks for the great review!!

1st, there IS NOT adaptive suspension on the 2022 MDX no matter what trim level you choose. 2nd, there IS adaptive steering and it’s standard on all trim levels; at low speeds the steering is light and vague and as you speed up the steering stiffens and becomes more precise. You remind us throughout the video you’re an engineer, well as an engineer please do your homework on the product before you create your reviews.

    • @AutomotivePress
      @AutomotivePress  2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Thank you for your comment. First, there IS adaptive variable suspension on the new Acura MDX (see link here www.acura.com/performance/modals/active-damper-system). Second, the so called "variable power steering" is actually not called adaptive steering - it simply varies the amount of power assist based on speed (lighter on lower speed) PLUS Acura now offers variable ratio steering on the MDX (see explanation below). These new steering system is NOT called adaptive steering. Neither of these technology makes the steering "more vague" or "more precise" since the preciseness of the steering is actually determined by the type of rack-and-steering mechanism and the type of EPS used in the vehicle. Please do some homework before making a comment.
Here's the info about the steering directly from Acura: The 2022 MDX uses new belt-driven Electric Power Steering (EPS) with a high-output electric motor for increased steering assist, essential for the quicker steering ratio afforded by the new variable gear ratio steering system. The new EPS system's variable gear ratio system is designed and tuned to provide the most essential characteristics, such as instantaneous response with a smooth, natural and precise steering feel. The variable ratio gives the new MDX increased agility in a variety of driving scenarios.
