The sound of the keys being pressed is strangely satisfying, and combined with the gameplay makes this video quite hypnotizing.
have you ever heard about ASMR?
It's called ASMR lol
Ikr
After playing one second of the video, my ears are ringing....
Don't forget the sweet, sweet drive read noises. :D
More hypnotic than a dot matrix printer, or BubbleJet printer.
You probably drained the power of the entire neighborhood playing this.
An old DVK-2 draws about 200 watts, so hardly.

Well, no to the same ..... but yeah ....
It doesn’t look the same it has changed for me
does Pong, space invaders and pac man count?
Very few people realize that the original Tetris game used terminal text-based rendering.
Most second generation versions utilized tile-based matrix (a "hack" of text mode) with a background raster canvas to display the frames and nice graphical features. Some later ones used full raster or vector mode, but I personally prefer the tile-based mode, even if it's a second tile-based canvas layer.
didnt know until pretty much right now!
Same goes for most video games developed in the USSR

@@ChaseDJ549 Hes saying this old ass computer and the sounds the buttons make when pressed sounds similar to the equally old computers from the late 70’s horror sci fi film “Alien”
Happy Birthday, Tetris! Oh those clunky old keyboards, this sound is just amazing.
Yeah! I like it, too ;)

Yes !
That clicking sound is so hypnotising.
To people that keep asking where they can get this, you can't. This version was made for the Soviet Russian Electronika 60 and DVK-2 Computers. THey're totally different then DOS or UNIX, so you probably wont run this on a normal PC unless theres a emulator
There're many PDP-11 compatible with DVK emulators out there. SIMH is one of them.
To echo asupshik's comment, the Elektronika 60 and DVK-2 (among others) are Soviet clones of the DEC PDP-11. If I recall the Elektronika-60 is one of the better ones in that it is almost completely compatible with a real PDP-11. So an emulator like SIMH or E-11 would be able to run the original OS namely FOBOS which was straight up clone of RT-11.
So, really for those who want to run a copy of the original Tetris one would need the executable, and then depending on how different FOBOS is from RT-11, one could either run Tetris on RT-11 in an emulator (or on a real PDP-11), or one could run it on FOBOS in an emulator.
There is also a modern relative of Tetris for command line interface in the standard BSD games. I know that OpenBSD has it, and I'm pretty sure NetBSD and FreeBSD also have it. And most Linux distros will let you grab the BSD games through your package manager. Windows users... well I have no clue because while I run Windows I have non-Windows machines for my non-Windows software.
Couple more $0.01's. You don't need to install FOBOS or any other Soviet clones of RT-11. Devs in Soviet Union preferred to work on original and slightly patched RT-11's anyway. Electronika-60 was a copy of LS-11. It was not exactly "better". CPU was 100% compatible with the original - true.
asupshik
Unless I'm mistaken; wasn't FOBOS literally *just* RT-11, but patched/modified to be in Russian/work with Cyrillic character sets (KOI-8, if I recall correctly).
Yeah, the Elektronika-60 isn't "better" than an LSI-11; I'm just saying it's one of the better Soviet clone machines based on the PDP-11 systems. Though, one "nice" features of the Elektronika machines (and the UKNC as well, I believe) are that they have a custom framebuffer so they can do graphics; unlike the PDP-11. I'm not sure if there are any third party PDP-11 framebuffer graphics boards; but I do know that DEC did make the VSV series graphics boards for the QBUS microVAX machines (but that is way out of scope of the PDP-11).
I don't recall but did the Soviets ever clone the F-11 chipset? I know they cloned the original LSI-11 (PDP-11/03) chipset and the J-11 (PDP-11/73) chipset; but I don't know if they ever did the F-11 (PDP-11/23).
AdmiralCreideiki Yes, you're right about FOBOS. There were multiple versions of RT-11 under different names in USSR. Funny part that most people still used RT-11 with KOI-8 support and proper drivers and rarely used those "renamed" versions. :)
Yes, they managed to clone both F-11 and J-11. 1811 and 1831 chipsets. Both were used in Dec Pro clones, Elekronika 85.
As for UKNC and graphic cards, it's a bit different story. There were 2 lines of LSI-11, Dec Pro compatible machines in USSR. Elektronika-60/80/85 were clones from top to bottom and were manufactured by factory in Voronezh. Another line, consisted of multiple machines and series that include DVK, UKNC, BK and Kvant, those were designed from scratch and manufactured in Zelenograd, Russian "Silicon Valley". UKNC was a single board computer based on earlier DVK, designed specifically for schools. BK - home computers, simpler and cheaper, but more wide spread. BK-11 could run RT-11. They were based on 1801 chipset which was compatible with LSI-11 but was not a clone. It was 16-bit CPU originally with its own IS. Later they decided to make 1801 compatible with PDP-11 line. Outside of T-11 those were only single chip PDP-11 compatible CPU's. DVK, UKNC and BK had either stand alone graphic cards or graphic controllers built into the board. At one point they even tried to build "Soviet Commodore Amiga" and added advanced graphic and sound controllers to what otherwise LSI-11 compatible computer. PK-11/Neon was the name. However, they came out too late with it, never had adequate budget.
And it still looks better than both EA's and Ubisoft's attempts.
What? They were OK IMO!
Ben Walker You don't have a singleplayer game require an online connection, nor should you manage to have it lag because of an online connection.
Luckily, they were patched, but Single Player is fine for me ATM. ;)
Ben Walker Unacceptable. Tetris is such a title that shouldn't require a patch. It's idiotproof to the point that many people _start_ with a Tetris clone as a programming project.
I think the 3DS version is one of the best recent versions of Tetris (though the music is for the most part terrible). But the worse thing about the Ubisoft release isn't the game itself but the fact that Nintendo had to pull their classic Game Boy version from the eshop.
This game included the hard drop before the hard drop became a standard in modern Tetris.
I came here because I was intrigued in the real life 1984 Tetris after discovering a secret tribute to it in Tetris Effect. Very fascinating for the original.
Programming language = Assembly language
Computer = DVK-2 (Soviet)
I think this program had some minor bugs. But looks really fun for that age.
Somewhere is said it was written in Pascal ?
Ten Cruise the computer is the Russian elektronika 60 I think
There were many forms of assembly back then, which one did that use? Im confident soviet computers used different asms than american and japanese asms
Language is Pascal. Pojitnov say it in the interview
@/dev/etresevo thank you SO much for this! I'd read Pajitnov's interview on oversigma, but I've spent the last hour trying to find out what was the original language under the branch of assembly languages used by the Elecktronika 60. I'm a Computer Science & Game Development major taking a senior Software Architecture & Design course. For my group's term project we naively assumed that the original Tetris (1984) would be the easiest game to research since it's an insanely popular, universal, timeless titan of game design. Since it was published in 1984 we thought it would be relatively simple to find the console hardware tech stack, programming language(s), and possibly some source code. All that I could conclusively find was that the Elektronika 60 console Tetris was originally created for in 1984 had an assembly instruction set that included over a dozen operating systems and almost 30 different programming languages, which make it next to impossible to pinpoint what they actually used without an open-sourced code API as reference. Your comment helps significantly narrow it down for us junior devs learning about "ancient" assembly languages. Keep up the great work you're doing in the field of computer science research!
I love how the "most replayed" is just the Elekronika powering up at 2:32
Not even the game playing
I never knew hard drop was already a thing in the very first Tetris.

And now they're gonna release a movie about this piece of history
They did. I just watched it. It's great. And it shows the true original version, where blocks are [] square bracket combos rather than what is shown here. It's an earlier version than what is shown here. Movie is very well done, obviously with Hollywood embellishments to add suspense and drama.
@@darwiniandude I watched it as well on day 1, I loved it!
It's even great that all references they make are the real deal and they don't make up stuff, like fake companies or games, they got the license to talk about them all, most movies don't make the effort
I can consistenly predict exactly how this player will place the blocks.
It almost makes me feel as if I am mind-controlling the game.

This version has some pretty advanced features like block preview and levels. The square bracket version was probably the first one. Pajitnov developed the game further based on the PC version's features.
no this is the original version, the brackets version came after because these block characters wouldn't show up on other PDP-11/03 clones (and the PDP-11/03 itself)
thanks for the info, i was going to ask exactly that. had a feeling the square brackets version came before

anyways, is it on steam?
MamesTv I could be some sort of saving issue of the matrix as it happens here too 1:46
because blocks here are drawn by 2*1 characters.
each block is drawn by two horizontally placed ## regardless of the current piece's orientation.
O-spin
It's a programming bug, every time the block touch the "ground" the game makes a copy of this block where it is, but when the block touch the ground you still have one time cycle to move it again, it touch the ground again so it makes an other copy of itself... I guess you could use this for cheating, but who wants to get sent to the gulag, right?
