    This is great! It all looks so cool together! Concerning legwraps, I think there are Viking Age finds of examples that had just been cut from cloth and hemmed, as well as specially woven ones (I feel like they may be from Hedeby? Jimmy/The Welsh Viking mentioned them in one of his videos), so your version aren't inaccurate! As for the SCA war, I'd love to see stuff about that! Have fun!

    1) I love historically-based cosplay, and the Abhorsen series has been a favorite of mine since Sabriel first came out, so I'm really enjoying these videos!
    2) Your "helper" is flippin' adorable!
    3) Thank you for showing your thread prep technique; I find it interesting to see how different people approach it.
    4) You asked whether we prefer single-video or multi-video projects; a mix is lovely!

    Ohhhhh thats how the leg wraps are wrapped. need to make me some of those. And braies and hose and and and ... Darn this things to make list keeps getting longer. Regency, more viking, all sorts of kit for other half, errrrm something else for the goth weekend and errrrm things.
    Love the whole outfit and the headscarf you were wearing in the intro and end. Green is one of my fav colours.
    I like the mix of one off projects and whole outfits over the course of several vids.
    I'd love to see any vids you can take of the events you go to. I cannot take part any longer as I have to use my wheelchair. One reason I look forward to Jorvik viking festival every year I can still be 'thenti without having to be totally 'thenti and no one bats an eyelid.

      I wish you all the best of luck. Its interesting seeing events from a lower level. Trying to get it off the ground will be a headache but will be worth it.
      Unfortunately since I've started using the wheelchair I seem to have gained the ability to be invisible. The amount of people that just doesn't see me and trip over me is astounding. And the amount of times I've been blamed for them walking into me!! *shakes head sadly *

    Your music choises makes me happy. The music in the sewing segment just makes the sewing so adventorous and exiting: like how you feel when you really gets into flow-state. And I have said it before: I like that Bran has his own theme song whenever he shows up.
    How much fabric did the hose consume? I am planning to make a pair sometime this year, but cutting things on the diagonal makes it much harder to estimate the fabric it will take.
    The thing I like most about event vlogs is to see a bunch of people in costume. So if others are ok with being in your vlog, that would be nice to see. It gives me so much inspiration to see multiple people dressed up at the same time and see the diverity in dress on the same event. It helps me both learn the common factors that makes a outfit look a specific period and gives me ideas and more alternatives, to base things off when I plan my own garments.
    What specifically happens on the event is of less interest to me, as I never will be able to go to those events (due to living on another continent), but the historical context of the event or your reflections on a broader level about the experience, is interesting. In other words: things that I can learn something about or apply to other events I go to, are interesting to hear. (And a get ready with me sounds like a wonderful idea!)

    Now that I’m at the end of the video: things I’d like to see- how do you balance modern comforts with SCA aesthetics when camping at large events like wars? Im currently packing for a weekend camping event so it’s been something that’s on my mind - our event has no access to bathrooms beyond lavatories and running potable water so simple things like staying clean take consideration- also how do you handle food etc at a big war. We don’t have large wars here- our largest event in the country gets to about 350 people and the biggest event in the Kingdom is Rowany Festival which gets about a thousand people so we have nothing on the scale of some of the big wars in the USA ( I did go to Pennsic for a few days once but it was tacked on the end of another trip so our prep was very minimal and I missed most of it)

    • @lenabreijer1311
      @lenabreijer1311 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Besides sca camping, including Pensic, I did a lot of camping by canoe and bicycle when I was young. For food, bring a lot of stuff that doesn't need being kept cold. Period that means dried sausages , crackers like the swedish crisps. Modern I use canned cocktail sausage, canned corned beef, sardines, falafel, hard cheese and oils in bottles. I also used a small alcohol stove, a swedish army thing. That allowed me to make coffee without dealing with a campfire.
      As far as keeping clean, you warm up some water and wash the sticky smelly bits with a cloth, this can be done without removing your shift. Bring some dry shampoo because washing your hair under a cold water tap is painful.

    • @OpusElenae
      @OpusElenae  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aw thank you John! I feel very strongly that any sewing practice is morally neutral, and that the standards that I choose to adhere to are just that: mine. And I never would have gotten this far in historical costuming if it wasn’t for the SCA. I do try to have a balance so people who are not scadians don’t get talked over or around, but I also don’t want to gloss over the fact that I’m in it.

    Production Assistant Bran did an excellent job representing the Disreputable Dog, though I think your idea of an actual dog photo shoot is awesome. This flavor of nerdy is fantastic. Lirael is one of my all time favorite books (I nearly died when I read it for the first time only to realize that Abhorsen was not published yet), and I really enjoy your interpretation into viking form!
    Question though, other than historical accuracy, is there a benefit to linen thread? I've heard its prone to breaking, so not sure if it should be a priority item as I build out my hand sewing/historical sewing kit.

    • @rachelboersma-plug9482
      @rachelboersma-plug9482 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Cotton, silk and polyester threads can be easily snapped by hand, but not linen. A seam sewn with waxed linen thread is very strong. If you don't wax the thread, it can fray during the sewing process, and that would make it weaker.

    • @christinaguzzi747
      @christinaguzzi747 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@rachelboersma-plug9482 ah gotcha, I think it was the non waxed issue I heard about. I hate polyester thread, but have a good stock of cotton already, which I have been using waxed for my fledgling historical stuff so far. I knew I wanted silk, but was hesitant about linen. I think I'll give it a go when I do my next linen project 🙂

      @@OpusElenae I actually went off to do a Very Scientific™ snapping test and couldn't find my linen thread. My son had stolen it to rig his model ship, because it takes strain better than regular thread, holds a knot better than nylon fishing line, and is suitably thin, unlike string/twine. All the things that make it good for sewing, in fact.

    Pukka brand Vanilla chai, with no milk (there's no black tea in the chai) and homemade vanilla sugar:
    I use UK grown and processed beet sugar with vanilla beans and homemade vanilla extract (1/2 bottle of high proof vodka and upwards of 5 cut up vanilla beans, left to "steep" for 5 months) I chop up the vanilla beans - upwards of 5 - and leave them to "ooze" in the sugar for 6 weeks in a dark place (I have a spot under a shelving unit that's "quiet" and easy to access), shaking the jar every week. After that, I sift out the vanilla beans and grind them finely with some of the sugar and put the "powder" back and mix thoroughly. I then leave for another week - and then add roughly a tbsp of the vanilla extract and mix. I leave it for as long as it takes to use the previous jar - again, shaking once a week.

    Everything came out so perfect!! (Hopefully) quick question about the leg wraps, would/will they end up being too warm at the Gulf War and/or in summer? Or would the fact you made the hose from linen help counteract the warmth that the wraps provide given the more hot/humid climate?
    And I'm 100% with you on no seams under feet. Heck even modern sock seams near my toes, if they're pressing at the wrong angle in my shoes, make me anxious, upset, (can hurt even!) and I have to fix it immediately.

      I’m not entirely sure! This is the first time I have worn them, so I’ll let you know. But I DO know that wool over linen has a swamp cooler effect with looser clothing, with the wicking and evaporation creating a cooler-than-you’d-think area beneath clothing. This may be the case here.

    Thanks a lot for the video! I am new to sewing and I tried myself on a pair of 14th century hosen, mine dont go up to my braies in the front like yours do however they stop around 5cm before my upper thigh begins. I dont know if I did everything correctly, but mine drag quite a bit down on my braies (I have a jute cord inside them to tie them tight). They also want to constantly slip out in the back, its a bit weird to explain, maybe thats just how they behave its a weird feeling to wear them. Maybe the issue really is that they dont have this triangle finish in the front that go up to my braies, I dunno.

    Just a quick note, you misidentified the author of Lirael. The author is Garth Nix.

      I didn’t. The cover artists are Leo and Diane Dillon.

    Have you (or anyone else reading this) ever made hose from cotton? Just wondering about its durability vs linen's.

      I haven't, but I have my first wearable mockup that's made from a linen look from Joann fabrics. Rayon and Linen blend, i think? And they've held up well. I don't prefer cotton because it tends to not wick as well as Linen.
