    I'm imagining an archaeologist examining a pair of medieval wool hose with funny-looking feet and thinking to themself, "Maybe it was their first go at it."

    Braes are a very important garment! After all, when the knickers are in a twist or all bunched up, it’ll ruin the whole day! Foundations are fundamental!
    Yours look splendid, are apparently functional and cry out for you go forth and cover them up with some heavy metal and wickedly boiled leather!

    This is great! I empathize with the pinning pain! I hate pins so I immediately baste everything after I pin for try-on and such. I highly recommend a leather thimble for when you’re sewing. I have several stashed around the house and they are aces for protecting your fingers! I get mine off Etsy but you could make one just as easily. Keep up the great work!

    Considering the foot portion often had pointed shoes or very lose overshoes I think the minor foot joint seams would easily be covered. Often times in slightly later period the hosen lost the foot portion and were instead a stirrup. Similar to modern day hiking gaiters. Thusly turnshoes and early boots would protect the feet.

    Tailors doubtfully would have sewn undergarments. These are considered “household” linens and would have been done by someone related to the person wearing the garment, likely a female relative or wife. As for the thread being black… well use what you have.😉 Your hose look AMAZING and you will improve as you do more.

    A simple start, but it turned out good. Making a full suit of armour and clothing to go underneath it is a huge process, so I hope the rest of your project goes well.

    As someone who enjoys historical fashion immensely, this is genuinely Lovely.
    Specifically, I've only run into one other TH-camr who does men's historical garments. So you are definitely filling a niche.
    I look forwards to seeing the rest of your adventures!

    Came here from Facebook. Excellent video, I’ll definitely be keeping up with this process. I just recently got into historical sewing myself (& sewing in general) but I’ve only made a couple garments out of thrift store bedsheets so far. My next major project I want to start is actually braies & hose.

    Hey great job, I wish my first video was this good. If you like some unsolicited advice you'd get a nicer fit from your hose if you had fulled the wool to give them more stretch, this means you would not have to have so much bag at the ankles. I cannot tell if you cut them on the bias either. If not, this can also be done to to give the wool more sideways stretch also giving you less bagging on the ankle. Otherwise I am really looking forward to seeing more. Keep up the great work.

      @hugobanneret7702  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks! I absolutely love your videos by the way! I did cut on the bias but this wool was incredibly thick and would not stretch enough at the ankle without coming apart at the seams when I was pinning it. Next time I will use thinner wool! Thanks for the advice!

      @@hugobanneret7702Yes a medium weight twill or broadcloth will definitely make a difference in the fit. I think that we will be releasing a braise video and an hose video at some point, but I am not in control of those ones. I am glad you enjoy our videos, looking forward to seeing your impression. We need to see more ground up impression stuff.

    What an awesome Work in Progress! Don't worry about it not being perfect - we all have to start somewhere. And yes, sewing machines can be tempting. But as you progress, you will get used to it and do it quicker. Looking forward to seeing your progress.

    You would find hand sewing easier if you used shorter lengths of thread. In addition you should not be working both sides of the seam (pulls the thread through on both sides). I realize you are a beginner, but as someone who teaches hand sewing this an easy set of skills to teach!

    I wonder if machine sewing it might be more authentic in the quality of the stitching albeit not in the technique

    • @hugobanneret7702
      @hugobanneret7702  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      hmm I wonder... I mean machine sewing doesn't sew in the same way: you can't do any medieval stitches with a machine. although my quality of stitching in this video is pretty shoddy it does get better in later videos!
