Greetings from Chile and great to find your video since this vacation the time's the time for me to try to fix simple problems on my small collection of record changers. In Chile Perpetuum Ebner and Dual were very common along with Elac and Philips in the sixties, as portable players as well as inside radio consoles which were formy prohibitive back then. Now it's interesting to notice Dual develped new models all the time but, mechanically, changers and table were quite similar from vintage models like my 1007 and 1008 to their more advanced 1219 or 1229. These days I'd been just trying to read and read the 1007 service manual to correct the non-returning tonearm trouble. Manuals can become rather confusing for an amateur like myself with all those letters and numbers to follow on the diagrams, so thank you for this video which comes in totally handy. Two more things, both, my 1007 and 1008 are rather noisy when spinning although I've tried to clean every part that can be cleaned and I'm not sure about lubing motors which I guess work differently on the Perpettum Ebner 660 I grew up with and love till today. I would lube motor now and then but the Dual seem to be much harder work. For the noisy spinning, I think I should go for the individual speed wheels as you show here in detail. Noise could come from those parts. Last but not least, I've been breaking my head to figure out how or if I will be able to combine a new-old stock cover plate I found on eBay for the 1007A with my 1007/1 arm hook. Looks like it's impossible but it was my mistake not to pay more attention to the different 1007 models there were out there. Again, thanks for the videos. They are really fun to watch and useful at the time of putting hands to work, for those of us who dare messing with these wonderful looking and sounding units. Best wishes from Santiago, Chile
Very helpful videos. Does tripping the lever underneath also guide the follower lever on the cam to initiate the stop function? My 1019 arm picks up at end of record but recycles to start record again (keeps looping).
Hi I have one of 1229q with exactly the same problem but I can’t see exactly how do you adjusting with the pliers do you did twist to the right to the left up or down??? Please let me know thanks so much
I have this issue with my 1245 Dual. Sometimes it picks-up, sometimes it does not. I also have a 1229 Dual which I attempted to get working some years ago, but finally gave-up. I can't remember if it had this end of play pick-up problem with it's other start to finish play issue? I have enough working TT's, so not too motivated to revisit the 1229 Dual anytime soon.
@@12voltvids, I likely did clean the underside of the 1229 and 1245, but may have missed that area next to the platter bearing. Thank you for the video.
I’m a bit of an amateur dual repair guy but I have the 1229 and somehow the bearing that is on the center hub has come off. I cannot figure out how to slide it back on the shaft as it hits this adjustment mechanism you are adjusting here and will not slide all the way down and seat under it. Any idea how I get it back on correctly? Many thanks.
Hello how are you? I have a Dual 1229Q. I have completely disassembled the unit and cleaned and lubricated it as per the instructions found on the forums, but a problem remains. When it enters the auto stop cycle, the tonearm returns to the position of a 10 inch Vinyl, lowers and returns to play. What could be happening? Thank you very much and greetings from Brazil.
Hello, nice job! US pressed records are known to have small end space, so this adjustment is far more tricky with European players. I still prefer optoelectronic detection, like those on high end Thorens or many Japanese, but they also have their issues and can be very dust sensitive. The arm is said to have better performances as it does not interfere with mechanism that can be noisy or give an excessive lateral effort... In fact, it's another source of dispute, as there is really very little difference: the same can be said between direct or belt or pulley driven platters. I have compared Denon or Sony direct drives with Thorens or Lenco (very similar to Dual), and must admit there are quite similar. Even with so called esoteric machines, the most important is the cartridge you use... Many high end record players use a manual only arm, and the only assistance is a lift on the side. But I've recently seen a small additional system that flips when the arm triggers a lever and lift it at the end of the record. Don't know however if it really works...
Some don't even have an arm lifter. I have an AR that is full manual, and if you fall asleep, the lead out groove will be cut through to the other side when you wake up. OK not quite but you get the just of it. "thump..... thump..... thump.....thump" forever. I do perfer my technics SLM1. It lifts and stop the platter at the end.
Duals pivot friction spec is 7mg vertical and 15mg horizontal. How does that compare with thorens. That light aluminum arm rides on a ball bearing and attaches close to the pivot. Translate that force to the stylus 220 mm from the pivot and its quite small.
You do not need to bend anything! On the tonearm beneath where the mecanism is( underneath the plate) there is a screw that adjusts this. It is connected to the end of record activating lever. Check the service manual, it is clearly stated there
So it's no supprise that it needs a tweak now and then. I like the fact it has the strobe, a 60hz ran neon and no fancy pants electronics, i like simplicity :-D. I think the old bsr decks have a similar bar idea, but i never looked close as it never seemed to cause much trouble. (Cruder design). It was the rubber drive wheel gone hard and grease gone like bloody concreate that i fixed the most.
Holy crap! first comment anywhere. A buddy of mine has that exact turntable and if I remember correctly his does what that one did. Great to know, he will be happy to hear of this fix and I will be sure to get him to watch this video. Thanks for sharing Dave.
I have an Akai direct drive, Technics SLM1, a dual, and AR belt drive. I also have a Thrones and a Dual Noresco amplified table but my son and daughter grabbed those as they are into vinyl. I really like the Noresco my daughter has as it has a Canadian made 60WPC amplifier on it using nice big Motorola transistors. It sounds fantastic and is an all in 1 solution for her. Plug in a BT board and she is all set for everything in 1 small package.

hello thanks for videos, i have learn too much because of you, i have problem with my 1219. tonearm doesn't drop correct position on 7 inch records. 12 inch record there is no problem. start an end points are correct. where should i look?
Check the stuerpimple for wear. Check the tone arm to see that the affixing screw is tight. Check the linkage that runs between the speed selector and the record size selector. I had a 1249 that was acting up recently, check the video on that. These units are all the same inside.
Well I need to see what I am doing and I can't see the monitor when I am looking at the unit under repair. I can't afford a crew to shoot these videos because everyone wants more to hold a camera than i make.
@@MCAN I don't see the footage till after the shots are completed. I generally point out what adjustment i am making either before or after I make the adjustment.
Dave... Finally got your name. If you ever came across this.. I would like to mail you some questions I have about my Sony home theatre for some advice. I hope you have time for that though, cause it seems you work all day... Great work too... I love your videos
This is not the recommended position to "adjust" the end trip. The rod can be adjusted at the other end (under the tonearm hinge). There is an eccentric screw. Couldn't find a pic showing the 1229 but this one is similar: www.vinylengine.com/turntable_forum/viewtopic.php?t=37515
And just what do you do when the screw is already at the end of it's limit and won't adjust anymore? You have to bend the metal slightly, which works every time BTW. Now if I had bent it too much I could have used the adjustment screw to bring it back slightly. Next dual that is adjustable I will show this setting. I guess I should have showed the attempt to adjust so you guys believe that I did it. Want a re-edit showing the adjustment attempt as I have the footage.
I don't know there's a possibility that you can actually make your own LP record by recording to the LP Record including the Music Bakery when test them out. =/

When the adjustment screw is at the end of it's travel, the level needs to be adjusted so the adjustment screw has something to work with.
Simple enough to tweak, i wonder if that hook is being bent by the picking up of many records, a bit thin maybe.
When you think about it. Every time it activates it is being whacked by the cog to get the mech going.
So it's no supprise that it needs a tweak now and then.
