But with maturity came the realisation of what a genius Ponting was while batting, fielding (those direct hits and short leg catches), leading the side. I was extremely fortunate to have played against Ricky in Northern Tasmanian in the early nineties as a teenager. My enduring memory of him as a batsman was his ability to hit the ball to ground so close to his body from any height off the back foot. Pull, hook, back foot drives and cut shots almost seemed to hit his feet on their way to the boundary. As a person he was quiet, subdued and private. He and all of his team mates and opponents knew his time in the grade was short lived as his progress through higher levels of cricket was always a certainty. During lunch we would all sit together and discuss the game, the weather or what we were doing that night. Ricky would sit on his own mostly however, with a pie and a can of coke, no doubt heavily focussed on the next session. He also bowled leg spin and kept wicket occasionally those days. What might be of interest to him is the fact he affected so many promising careers in those days by the sheer fact he was so much better than us, we realised we could never reach his level or had as much natural ability.
Played too long as Australia were crap in his final few years and I'm sure he felt he had to hang about for the good of the team. Probably lost 7-8 off his average for that. Number three in my strongest XI since I started watching cricket, about 20 years.

Absolutely hated Ponting during his heydays ... he was a phenomenal batsman and bullish most of the times and played with passion, wore his heart on the sleeve/ towards the end of his career I realized the magnitude of his achievements and started respecting him a bit more. As a coach though. people get an insight into Ponting the bloke and he is genuine and humble with no starry airs and I can see why he would make a great mentor / coach. When he starts talking technicalities of game he is simply the best of all....

Australian cricket isn't as good any more is the simple explanation. Here in Australia playing cricket is no where near as popular as it was 15 - 20 years ago. Young people would rather play video games and go to the gym. And sports like Australian rules football, rugby,basketball and soccer are played more than cricket. Australia will never dominate again imo.

There has been three great interviews by TGC. Holding, for obvious reasons. The other two are this Ponting interview and Watson. Both Ponting and Watson had very similar themes of self awareness, love of the games and the need to give back to the game (helping out the younger players at all levels). I remember in my pre-teen years, everyone around me hated him for what he did in the 2003 WC, and him being a bully etc! I was the only one who absolutely loved his Batting skills, his attitude, his tactical moves as a captain, the way he backed each and every player in his team, who inturn would give their life for him on the Field ! A GOAT! its strange to see life sort of coming to a circle and many Indians now accept and appreciate Virat Kohli who's just all things they hated in Punter, but in terms of overall cricket sense (batting + fielding +tactical moves) is still behind Ponting

Australia last played a test series in India in 2017. That was one of the best series that I have witnessed in the 5-6 years.

I remember in my pre-teen years, everyone around me hated him for what he did in the 2003 WC, and him being a bully etc! I was the only one who absolutely loved his Batting skills, his attitude, his tactical moves as a captain, the way he backed each and every player in his team, who inturn would give their life for him on the Field ! A GOAT! its strange to see life sort of coming to a circle and many Indians now accept and appreciate Virat Kohli who's just all things they hated in Punter, but in terms of overall cricket sense (batting + fielding +tactical moves) is still behind Ponting
