This is such a hilariously European interview. He keeps on trying to bring up connections to larger concepts and established philosophical giants, or trying to find out what statements are intentional, and PT is just saying "hey man, I just wanted to have fun."

FailedComedian I was thinking the same thing, and it reminded me of the french kubrick interview. you notice that both pta and especially kubrick (and a lot of other directors) are hesitant to reveal the subtext in their movies.

I’ve always felt that PTA is an accidental genius. He’s my favorite director/screen writer and yet I’m always left unsatisfied with his interviews. Maybe he hides the genius or he takes risks to challenge the audience out of conversations like this, either way, I’ll always be a participant until the end.

@@BIGBIRD208I agree. There’s an interview with Charlie Rose for PDL where Adam Sandler says the movie is about loneliness, and love, and Paul Thomas Anderson very flippantly says it’s about getting out of the house. I don’t think he’s an accidental genius but he definitely does not come across nearly as brilliant as his films are.

Paul Thomas Anderson is always completely candid in this interviews. It's almost shocking, but as a film student it's fascinating.

He seems like exactly the opposite of an asshole in this interview. He has to be oned of the most cordial, gregarious and humble film directors to ever be interviewed. Even to the pretentious interviewer's point of the film being "nihilistic" (which it's anything but) he says "I couln't argue with you." He completely understands and respects subjective interpretations and seems genuinely receptive to anyone's opninion of his work.

I feel like once he hit Punch Drunk Love, his cocky mid 20s phase was out of him. I love how he transitioned not only as a filmmaker but as a person as well. (Although I do love the arrogance of his younger interviews, the confidence is honestly inspiring lol)

I don't really know where the interviewer got the 'nihilism' thing from, PDL seems like by far the least cynical of his films

The one thing an artist gets off on is to be taken seriously and to be interesting to someone. You can clearly watch the happiness in p.t.a`s eyes in this interview... He`s in film heaven.

as far as I'm concerned, he's not pretending at all, or being dishonest, or choosing to withhold the information. Is it so hard to believe that he just makes his movies and that he has the talent to make them well enough to have any number of things read into them?

No need to give a hard time to the interviewer. Anybody who would like to reduce Punch Drunk Love to just another slapstick rom-com is just too short sighted to see why the humour was so extraordinary, it was precisely because of the subtle darkness that Adam’s character was all about.

Judging from the black marks under his eyes it appears to me that he's not drunk or stoned but very very tired, jet-lugged and working very hard promoting his movie and probably giving a hundredth interview trying to get his point across

yeah he is on coke no doubt, you can tell by the tight and swinging jaw and his stare. also he goes in pretty hard towards the middle. you can see him high in other clips, but not only him. he also surrounds himself with coked up people, e.g. joaquin phoenix, who was terribly fucked up on it until recently, also seymour hofman which is evident now, although i believe he was sober while they were working together. still, those druggies cling together for that they share the same highs and lows, and they restlessy go on to make all those great and crazy movies
