I find some of these interviews with Paul and Adam where Paul's basically asked "why would you wanna make a movie with *him*?!" while Adam's sat right there kinda weird. I understand the question but it still seems really rude
@@bokehintheussr5033 not to mention how he's proven over and over again that he is capable of being dramatic roles. Meyerowitz Stories. Uncut Gems. Punch Drunk Love Sandler's a hilarious guy who's always chosen that silly goofy brand of comedy. That's just what he loves doing. He could do other stuff too and he has sometimes done more mainstream comedy movies but yea this is what he loves doing.
It’s also one of the only ones that is a genuinely different experience on a second watch when you have the full context of the story and situation. A pretty impressive feat, to me at least.
Adam Sandler will always get work due to the fact that he’s the nicest man in Hollywood. I hope one day he starts doing more dramatic films. Maybe even with PTA
Nile Garcia yes! I did actually get a chance to see it since I commented that. I thought it was a good movie. No punch drunk love, but that’s a ridiculously high standard. Sandler was incredible in it.
Adam Sandler does his film making and thank you for 30 yrs of making me laugh and go wow great actor. Plus no bad comments ever about Sandler as a person.
This is probably #3 for me. Magnolia and TWBB as #1 and 2 respectively. Punch Drunk Love is a singular achievement: Proving that P.T. could provide the same kind of drama, suspense, and comic relief in the space of 90 minutes as he did in 183 minutes.
ianucci I agree. I’ve seen quite a few Charlie interviews, but he’s demeaning to Sandler in this one. I didn’t like Charlie here. Sandler keeps composure and remains a great guy. I’d love to work with him.
Great movie... but I had to laugh thinking of all the people who went to it thinking they’d be seeing an “Adam Sandler movie”. ....also...listening to all these PT Anderson interviews following his earlier movies it’s amazing to hear virtually no mention of Philip Seymour Hoffman who provided such phenomenal supporting performances behind the big name stars of the time.
in my opinion pta had Barry's character figured out and he knew adam sandler is practically the same so he just said i want him in my movie and it turned out to be imo his best movie
What I just loved in Adam Sandler's PDL performance was that he would do the Sandler schtick in it right up to the punch line, and then--no punch line. Omitted. Again and again. This simple change shifted what he was able to convey from laughter to heartbreak. It still breaks my heart for his character when I watch this performance.
Rigsby 1 this reminds me of the way Will Smith's career felt... he made a lot of money being a clown, gets a chance to do something serious Six Degrees of Separation.. gives a foundational performance... I thought he would go on to do much more work in that vein... kept waiting for him to break more of the same ground... instead we got independence day
I agreed when he dramatic films everyone said oh he needs to be funny and blah blah blah and when he is oh he needs to do something different blah blah blah bullshit!
He probably would if he was offered them, there aren't too many filmmakers like PTA out there. He's obviously done Meyerowitz recently and he's in the new Safdie brothers film
It's ironic but also pretty sad how much Charlie hyped the box office in this interview only for it to ultimately fail to recoup its budget. True shame this one failed cause this is still Adam's best movie, by far.
Say what you like about Rose, but when someone genuinely brilliant is in the room, he does allow them to speak. His best interviews, in my opinion at least, are the ones with Anderson (he has had him on the show a number of times), Chris Hitchings and Toni Morrison.
Maybe I’m biased, maybe I’m just easy to please but damn Anderson has never made a weak film. PDL being my absolute favorite, a rom com as only Anderson can do. Such a beautiful film the colors, the lense flairs the paintings by Jeremy Blake, just an exuberant and lovely film
14:13 - the interviewer having just transitioned ,seamfully, from Sandler being self-deprecating to an out of context question about barry Egan[Saddlers character] having phone sex in the movie.
How was Rose ever considered a good interviewer for entertainment? In his political and current events stuff was a bit better, but he can’t contain himself with the celebrities. He constantly finishes his guest’s sentences, it’s maddening!
I really appreciate PTA's respect towards Adam's filmmaking, although it's full of shit, obviously. He gets something great out of Adam's films, and incorporate to his own.
Gotta disagree, especially at that time I’d say sandler had a pretty damn good run in his headliners like Billy Madison, happy Gilmore, big daddy, bulletproof. Stuff like that, Anderson is a film lover yes but cmon man how many times can you watch a max ophuls film or citizen cane. Nothing wrong with having junk food every once in awhile to get a break from a bland meal.
It's funny, I find young Anderson even more fascinating now, knowing he was jacked on coke back in those days. At least all that drug fueled bravura made it to the screen. It's also a little comforting knowing he is human and had to 'medicate' himself as he adjusted to fame and acclaim. It's one thing being quietly confident and self assured, but quiet another when those around also acknowledge the fact that you are probably the best at what you do.
This won’t mean anything to most people who read this, but young PTA always reminded me a bit of young Daniel Clowes. It’s probably mostly the eyes/eyebrows.
His films have a way of doing that. They all linger in my mind after watching them. The fact some of the story relates to PTA's own life (Fiona Apple mentions that he followed her to Hawaii after they met) gives Punch Drunk Love even more relevance now. It's the only PTA film I have not seen more than once. I need to give it another go.
Charlie Rose should have stayed out of this interview and just let Paul and Adam talk. Rose is annoying. He basically left PT Anderson out of the interview.
Does anyone else recall when Tarantino had expressed his desire to work with Sandler on what he was then referring to as his 'World War II Film'? I recall during the press for 'Magnolia' that Anderson asked the Interviewer for Rolling Stone Magazine, "Are you aware of what Adam Sandler is doing?!”
"Get some of that Sandler money!" Kinda funny that Punch Drunk made the least money out of all PTA's films (after Hard Eight) and the least out of all Sandler's movies. LOL. It's a great movie nevertheless, and it proved Sandler could be taken seriously in a dramatic role, although he seemed to prefer sticking with his forte after Punch, until another great drama in Uncut Gems.
In fairness, you have had 18 or so years to ponder the film. You have had time to dwell on it, gain insight etc, but this show came out when the movie came out, so it's no surprise there is so little in depth talk.
I enjoyed Rose's interview but he would often talk too much as if people wanted to hear his thoughts. We are there to hear your guests - no cares about what you have to say. Just ask the right questions. Also Rose would come across as trying to be one of the guys, like he was friends with his guests. Which he was not. Finally - It would have been nice here if he stopped fawning over Sandler and let the great PTA speak more. Unbalanced intervoew.

That moment when Charlie Rose won't shut the hell up and let them talk (PS Thank you for uploading this)
That kind of sucked. Seemed like Rose was far more interested in Sandler than Anderson in this one. The other PTA interviews are much better.
