I made my first turkey bone broth. I know when you began straining out the bones and other bits you saved any meat for later use in recipes, but I have a Rottweiler and English Mastiff, so I saved the meat, skin, and carrots into a zip lock bag. The next morning, I pulled the bag from the refrigerator and using my hands in the bag began squishing the contents like I was making a meat loaf. If I felt any missed bits of bone, I pulled those out and discarded. I took handfuls and pressed in a muffin tin to freeze for my dogs. Once frozen they can be stored in a freezer bag. I defrost and crumble over my dog's regular food. They love it as an extra treat.
Made my first broth out of the turkey this weekend. I followed your recommendations, except i didn't have feet, and it turned out wonderful. Got my crisper cleaned out too. I was surprised how gelatinous it turned out. Thanks for the advice.

I had some overripe tomatoes to throw in, and I find that they really add a great flavour and provide that acidity you recommend.

My first bone broth! I made a batch on the stove top and one in the crockpot and then combined the two. It is very gelatinous! I am so excited! Thank you for your motivation and step by step videos!

My mother always made her turkey bone broth in the oven! She used the roasting pan she used to roast the turkey. She "baked" the bones in water, skin, fat from the bird for 24 hours on 200F, covered and occasionally checking that the bones were covered and breaking down. She always added vinegar as well. Something she also did was in the last few hours, she removed the roasting pan/broth from the oven, broke open the larger bones to get the marrow out and into the broth. I don't recall her adding vegetables though. But I've made vegetable broth using the peelings and onion skins that I keep in the freezer until I'm ready to make broth.

She recommends that we can now simmer our chicken bone broth for only 6 hours and our beef bone broth for 12 hours....whoo hoo!! This is a game changer!! I used to leave my beef bone broth on the stove for 72 hours. That always worried me!!😱
Mary's Nest I wondered about the 6 hours but I trust you 😉. That’s great bc I don’t like the long cook time for a number of reasons. I have great luck with my turkey stock gelling at 8 hours so it’s good to know I’m closer to bone broth than I thought! 😍
Thrifty Chic Housewife - Yes! You were a bone broth gal all along!! Sally’s book is great. Apparently, she and her co-author had testing done on the collagen protein levels of the bone broth and found that it pretty much peeked at 6 for chicken and 12 for beef. Do you wash the vegetables and onion skins and celery before you put in the pot when making a broth. Also if we use raw meat is it the same temperature. On high then on warm? Thank you.
If I want to make a soup in the slow cooker do I have to make the broth separately from the actual soup? If I made the broth first and then made the soup would the broth overcook?

Hello ma'am. I am new to the bone broth thing, and have made a turkey as well as a beef before watching your videos. (I had no idea what I was doing at the time) I see you put all your vegetables in raw. My question is this. "Is it a problem/mistake to also place them on a cookie sheet to roast a bit first, before putting them in water?" I roasted mine and and was thinking that it might add some good color and flavor. I asked the butcher may my local super market and was surprised to find out he is willing to sell me up to 30lbs of chicken feet for $2 a lb. I want the entire box.... since I have not been able to find them anywhere. Thanks for this video....
When making bone broth sometimes I add in 1 or 2 tablespoons of unflavored gelatin. It does make the broth gel well. How do you feel about doing this? I have never used chicken feet before, but would like to try it someday. I love your TH-cam videos! I have learned so much. :-)

Hi Kevin, Thank you SO much for the kind words!! So glad you’re here!! Yes, you can definitely use powdered turmeric. I would start slow and work up. Maybe a teaspoon working up to a tablespoon. Don’t overdo. Although turmeric is a wonderful anti-inflammatory, some folks can find it it a bit hard on the stomach in it’s powdered form. Love, Mary🤗
Hi Tammy, thank you so much for the kind words!! I don’t pressure can bone broth only because the high temperature for an extended period can damage the gelatin that we’ve worked hard to achieve. I was taught to cook in crockpot for 24 hr on hi then low then warm do you think Ill get the same benefit that way cause I've been slow cooking for 7 hr now and just to tired to finish up

Hi Sharon, I may have links under the video in the description but if not, they are both available on amazon. However, that said, I bought my flour sack towels at Sam’s Club about 20 years ago! They last forever!! And over the years I have found my French jelly jars at thrift stores but I have also seen them sold at various kitchen stores. Hope this helps. Love, Mary

Hello Mary. I'd like to share the fact that I have just successfully made a beautifully gelatinous batch of Turkey bone broth as well as a beautifully gelatinous batch of beef bone broth. Your instructions could not have been any more clear and is the reason why I was so successful in my opinion. I myself rather enjoy drinking the bone broth as is however my family is a little more hesitant. I'd like for all of them to be able to take advantage of the benefits the bone broth has to offer however I don't want to force anyone to try anything they don't feel comfortable. In watching your videos I notice you talk about the fact that the bone broth can be used in place of water for most if not all recipes. Does using the bone broth this way still allow you to get the benefits? Or is it better to drink it just as the broth warm ? Also, is there a limit to the amount of bone broth I should be drinking each day?
Hi Kevin, I am so happy to hear that you are making bone broth! It is so good for you. As to the amount to drink… I’ve never heard of anyone giving specific dietary recommendations. I think as with anything, everything is good in moderation. Yes, you can use bone broth in place of water and it will still contain all the nutrition. You can use it as a base for soups and stews and you can use it in place of water when cooking rice or other grains. Hope this helps! So glad you’re here! Love, Mary🤗
Do you happen to know if any of those vegetables would be healthy to give to your dog? I’m wondering how to make a healthy chicken bone broth for dogs. I know the dogs especially older dogs, have a lot of arthritis and I’m wondering if this will help. I don’t have a dog myself but I have friends who do and they always seem to have bone problems, the dogs anyway. I bet making a chicken feet bone broth for your dogs is so so good for them
Hi Pam, Great question. Unfortunately no. Bone broth is a low acid food so it needs to be pressure canned. However, that said, I would only recommend pressure canning some for emergencies because the high temp of pressure canning will damage some of the gelatin. Love, Mary

Francie Sheerin Melendez - Hi Francie, Thanks for visiting. That is an excellent question. Today, most slow cooker manufacturers have switched to a lead-free glaze for their ceramic insert. But, you can call the manufacturer and ask them but you can also test it yourself. You can buy lead test strips. They are very reasonable. You may find them at a hardware store or on amazon. I made broth today. I found my slow cooker does not reach 180 degrees on warm or low. Didn't check temp till close to five hrs on warm. Kicked it up to high for two more hours, fingers crossed.
I’m not trying to sound judgmental, believe me i have a lot to lose myself. But I’ve used homemade bone broth for a 3 day bone broth fast to clean out my system and lose weight. I need to make some more and do another bone broth fast. I’m currently eating a keto type way and trying to lose this last 70 pounds.
Mary, look what I bought at the store!! 20 lbs of Chechen feet for $5.00!!! She said, no one was buying them, she needed to get rid of them. They are bagged, not freezer burnt.

daisy gurl - Glad you like the video. I added 1 cup of white vermouth (a fortified wine) as I prefer the taste but you can add 1/4 cup of ACV, if you prefer. Just don’t overdo it as it can impart a strong flavor. You can also use wine or any other fortified wine. Yes, you do want to acidulate the water in some way to help extract the collagen from the bones and cartilage which will increase the gelatinous consistency of the final product. The bones contain some minerals but not a lot. To increase the minerals, be sure to add lots of veggies. So glad you are making bone broth! Keep me posted on how it turns out. Love, Mary❤️😘❤️

My first bone broth! I made a batch on the stove top and one in the crockpot and then combined the two. It is very gelatinous! I am so excited! Thank you for your motivation and step by step videos!

@@MarysNest can you pressure cook the bone broth the first time I made it my mother-in-law used her pressure cooker to preserve it
My mother always made her turkey bone broth in the oven! She used the roasting pan she used to roast the turkey. She "baked" the bones in water, skin, fat from the bird for 24 hours on 200F, covered and occasionally checking that the bones were covered and breaking down. She always added vinegar as well. Something she also did was in the last few hours, she removed the roasting pan/broth from the oven, broke open the larger bones to get the marrow out and into the broth. I don't recall her adding vegetables though. But I've made vegetable broth using the peelings and onion skins that I keep in the freezer until I'm ready to make broth.
I made this with chicken a few months ago, and it was delicious!

She recommends that we can now simmer our chicken bone broth for only 6 hours and our beef bone broth for 12 hours....whoo hoo!! This is a game changer!! I used to leave my beef bone broth on the stove for 72 hours. That always worried me!!😱
Mary's Nest I wondered about the 6 hours but I trust you 😉. That’s great bc I don’t like the long cook time for a number of reasons. I have great luck with my turkey stock gelling at 8 hours so it’s good to know I’m closer to bone broth than I thought! 😍

Apparently, she and her co-author had testing done on the collagen protein levels of the bone broth and found that it pretty much peeked at 6 for chicken and 12 for beef. Do you wash the vegetables and onion skins and celery before you put in the pot when making a broth. Also if we use raw meat is it the same temperature. On high then on warm? Thank you.
If I want to make a soup in the slow cooker do I have to make the broth separately from the actual soup? If I made the broth first and then made the soup would the broth overcook?

"Is it a problem/mistake to also place them on a cookie sheet to roast a bit first, before putting them in water?"

When making bone broth sometimes I add in 1 or 2 tablespoons of unflavored gelatin. It does make the broth gel well. How do you feel about doing this?

Hi Kevin, Thank you SO much for the kind words!! So glad you’re here!! Yes, you can definitely use powdered turmeric. I would start slow and work up. Maybe a teaspoon working up to a tablespoon. Don’t overdo. Although turmeric is a wonderful anti-inflammatory, some folks can find it it a bit hard on the stomach in it’s powdered form. Love, Mary🤗

Hi Tammy, thank you so much for the kind words!! I don’t pressure can bone broth only because the high temperature for an extended period can damage the gelatin that we’ve worked hard to achieve. The “free & clear” detergents will be dye and scents free. Should do the trick. :)

I think it’s fine to use them but since tubers are a high pesticide crop, I may be inclined to only use organic potato peelings.🤗

Hi Sharon, I may have links under the video in the description but if not, they are both available on amazon. However, that said, I bought my flour sack towels at Sam’s Club about 20 years ago! They last forever!! And over the years I have found my French jelly jars at thrift stores but I have also seen them sold at various kitchen stores. Hope this helps. Love, Mary

Hello Mary. I'd like to share the fact that I have just successfully made a beautifully gelatinous batch of Turkey bone broth as well as a beautifully gelatinous batch of beef bone broth. Your instructions could not have been any more clear and is the reason why I was so successful in my opinion. I myself rather enjoy drinking the bone broth as is however my family is a little more hesitant. I'd like for all of them to be able to take advantage of the benefits the bone broth has to offer however I don't want to force anyone to try anything they don't feel comfortable. In watching your videos I notice you talk about the fact that the bone broth can be used in place of water for most if not all recipes. Does using the bone broth this way still allow you to get the benefits? Or is it better to drink it just as the broth warm ? Also, is there a limit to the amount of bone broth I should be drinking each day?
Hi Kevin, I am so happy to hear that you are making bone broth! It is so good for you. As to the amount to drink… I’ve never heard of anyone giving specific dietary recommendations. I think as with anything, everything is good in moderation. Yes, you can use bone broth in place of water and it will still contain all the nutrition. You can use it as a base for soups and stews and you can use it in place of water when cooking rice or other grains. Hope this helps! So glad you’re here! Love, Mary🤗
Do you always use organic bones, feet etc?
Do you happen to know if any of those vegetables would be healthy to give to your dog? I’m wondering how to make a healthy chicken bone broth for dogs. I know the dogs especially older dogs, have a lot of arthritis and I’m wondering if this will help. I don’t have a dog myself but I have friends who do and they always seem to have bone problems, the dogs anyway. I bet making a chicken feet bone broth for your dogs is so so good for them
Hi Mary could broth be water bath canned?
Hi Pam, Great question. Unfortunately no. Bone broth is a low acid food so it needs to be pressure canned. However, that said, I would only recommend pressure canning some for emergencies because the high temp of pressure canning will damage some of the gelatin. Love, Mary

Francie Sheerin Melendez - Hi Francie, Thanks for visiting. That is an excellent question. Today, most slow cooker manufacturers have switched to a lead-free glaze for their ceramic insert. But, you can call the manufacturer and ask them but you can also test it yourself. You can buy lead test strips. They are very reasonable. You may find them at a hardware store or on amazon. I made broth today. I found my slow cooker does not reach 180 degrees on warm or low. Didn't check temp till close to five hrs on warm. Kicked it up to high for two more hours, fingers crossed.
How do you wash your towels without getting the taste of detergent or bleach?
I use an I scented detergent and do a double rinse. 🤗
I’m not trying to sound judgmental, believe me i have a lot to lose myself. But I’ve used homemade bone broth for a 3 day bone broth fast to clean out my system and lose weight. I need to make some more and do another bone broth fast. I’m currently eating a keto type way and trying to lose this last 70 pounds.

Mary, look what I bought at the store!! 20 lbs of Chechen feet for $5.00!!! She said, no one was buying them, she needed to get rid of them. They are bagged, not freezer burnt.

I'll be making this today with the leftover turkey leavin's. Did I miss something or didn't you add ACV to the pot? I thought ACV helped with the extraction of minerals from the bones. daisy gurl - Glad you like the video. I added 1 cup of white vermouth (a fortified wine) as I prefer the taste but you can add 1/4 cup of ACV, if you prefer. Just don’t overdo it as it can impart a strong flavor. You can also use wine or any other fortified wine. Yes, you do want to acidulate the water in some way to help extract the collagen from the bones and cartilage which will increase the gelatinous consistency of the final product. The bones contain some minerals but not a lot. To increase the minerals, be sure to add lots of veggies. So glad you are making bone broth! Keep me posted on how it turns out. Love, Mary❤️😘❤️
