  • Welcome to Stragglers - the series where I look at old trains that are still in service and whether they are any good. Today was the class 150 with TFW. (At the time of recording these units were only 39 years old, however they will be 40 in 2024!) In the future I may look at the other operators who run 150s!

I really dislike the 150s. The noise they make when they go through a tunnel is unbelievable.

I had to endure that the other day. Thankfully, I have decent noise e cancelling earbuds

The noise is awesome especially when they are working flat out on gradients in the valleys

These are my least liked class on the rails today, incredibly loud and in the northern config very uncomfortable. Not great acceleration either

I'm a 37 year old bloke from the peak district and these and the 156s and 142s were pretty much the only trains I knew. While they're showing their age now I have a soft spot for them due to so many memories created by them. Compared the 142s they were almost luxury 😂

Love these old veterans they have given so many years of great service and the noise is awesome especially when working hard on the valley lines

150001 is 40 years old now, or will be in 2 weeks. There's photos of it coming from York to Derby in late June 1984.
Although the 150/1s date from 1985-6, that's not far behind!

    Ayyy I live in Telford
Whenever I'm heading to Shrewsbury or Birmingham I definitely prefer a 158 but it's always nice to see that exact 150 that goes through daily

Only 150001 and 150002 are 40 years old in 2024, as only those two 150s were built in 1984.
The rest of the 150/0s are formed from 150/1 driving cars and 150/2 centre cars, so use vehicles built in 1985-87 (37-39 years old in 2024).
The 150/1 units were built in 1985-86, so are 38-39 years old in 2024.
All of TfW's 150s are 150/2s built in 1986-87, making them 37-38 years old in 2024.
Until around 2000, all 150s were 3+2 seating and no tables (like Northern's still are).
The 2+2 seating with tables on the TfW 150s and most of the GWR 150s is a carry-over from Wales & West (a National Express Group TOC) who made the change around 2000.
It wasn't until around 2005 though that Arriva Trains Wales significantly increased their 150 fleet from just 6 units to 36 units, but there were loads of National Express Group TOCs at that time who could've made the interior layout change to the extra 30 150s that ATW acquired.
I heard that Northern wanted (in more recent years) to have the 2+2 seating and tables in their 150s, but the "nowadays DfT" refused because it would "reduce capacity" 😝
The PRM mods, USB/power socket fitment and WSP fitment to the TfW 150s started in 2019, slightly ahead of the TfW livery and interior refurb into the 2020s.
You mean the 165s and 168s are newer than 150s, not older 😜
    Good video though 😊

I've seen a plane a few times when I used to commute from Wolves to Telford, most amusing thing I saw was a random tank.
Additionally as someone who commuted a lot on that line I'm surprised you didn't get a shortformed service announcement

To be honest I usually plan ahead and check how many carriages etc! I had to plan ahead to get a 150 in the first place!

I do like these they have been reliable the last year but also a couple years ago I remember these breaking down a lot and for some reason the lights will just cut off and just weird glitches happening on the trains.
But didn’t have that at all last year

    • @Vanmanyo
      @Vanmanyo  8 หลายเดือนก่อน

All trains have their breakdowns and there's far more unreliable units out there!

Can't beat the 150s I'd sooner have a 150-156 with openable windows than the trains we have now that solely rely on air conditioning. Since some operators can't keep the AC working during the summer months.
