I have eaten a mostly WFPB diet since 2017, and am currently 56. I had babies at 33 and 35, and hit menopause at 52. I have never supplemented with DHEA, but my levels have constantly been on the high side of normal for the five years I have been testing. I find that interesting. I'm not hairy, acne-prone, or with PCOS. I do think it may be part of what gives me a more youthful look. Who knows.
I take it but low dose (5mg) daily and it has helped with depression and mental clarity plus I sleep better. Will remain on it, my experience has been positive.
Dear Doctor, love you. Now, when my board certified endocrinologist recommended 30mg a day. Why? I didn't know. Later it seemed that yes, he had a rationale. It is meant to fight cortisol and therefore he recommended taking it in the morning early. A year of two later he asked me to stop taking it or at least cut the dose. That was because he said that the excess was (possibly?) turning into estrogen (His best guess??) Maybe he wanted me to stop taking it because I was buying from Vitacost and not the way more expensive product he was selling in his office. I am 75 years old and the issue of counteracting cortisol is important to me for the sake of my getting enough sleep in the mornings.
Hi! Did you cut your dose, or keep taking it? If you cut it, were you able to sleep in? If the DHEA was made into estrogen,I'd say that was a good thing! Estrogen supports collagen production, not just in our skin, but thru out our organs, it's what cartilage is made of (ensuring healthy joints) and is the flexible matrix upon which our bones deposit calcium, magnesium and other bone minerals.
@@laurieparis2203 yes, I did more or less stop taking it. As for getting to sleep, or going back to sleep when it turns out to be difficult, I have several herby things, or sometimes just an ibuprphin, but there is nothing, nothing as effective a just one hit of Marijuana. It works within 10 minutes, I'd say. It's too bad, I'd very much like not to be a user (I'm 75 years old and people my age really really need their sleep)
Sweet! I have been wondering for about 6 years if I should be taking this. Back in 2017 My doctor accidentally checked my DHEA instead of DHA when I asked. And my DHEA was very low. But I had/have none of those symptoms. I am a little depressed about where I live because I hate it here. But that's not the fault of DHEA but maybe that's what brought it down. I definitely don't have any problems with focus and sexual drive, I can definitely make some babies at 50 ;). And I just checked my bone density the other day and it's excellent going on 13 years vegan now. And I definitely don't need to lose any weight because I'm perfect in that department. So I guess I'm good :-) I feel good ❤
Thanks a lot. In the face of some unfriendly comments below directed specifically toward me, I have to come here everyday to prove that I thrive as a WFPB VEGAN. Yesterday I persuaded someone who seldom eats green leafy vegetables to start eating them. Of course thanks to Dr. Greger, because this person is only convinced by Dr. Greger. God bless!
Dr. Greger, Dr Harris here, been following you for years. I’m WFPB. I been taking DHEA for years algae based. ? Are you still recommending it for brain shrinkage prevention?
I was taking both DHEA and pregnenolone to try to mitigate cortisol and change my metabolism a bit(i'm 51, endurance "athlete" - cycling, vegan.and i hit a wall in weight loss before hitting a target weight). had to stop the DHEA because it made me irritable, so i just stuck with the pregnenolone and i did feel stronger and sharper mentally. taking a break right now for a couple of weeks and then i'll take it again.
Increased rates of Prostate Cancer due to lower Testosterone levels, the modern diet and other factors. Maybe there is a link between low DHEA/Testosterone, and prostate cancer as men age.
Never cease to be fascinated (and horrified) when data shows that so many supplements do not contain what they claim to contain. .... So what is in there exactly? Another reason to not overly rely on supplements, but rather use them to "supplement" a nutritious diet :)
Read The China Study by T. Colin Campbell. Rule No.1: do not eat animals, eat plants. Rule No. 2: eat whole plants, not extracts, such as supplements, drugs, oil sugar salt. God bless!
Was interested in the take of DHEA with this video, but it was pretty apparent that this guy is biased towards vegan, so that immediately shuts down any useful opinion.
Thank you! There are plenty saying women need HRT ASAP and forever to prevent later discomfort, skin weakness, and disease so ears are particularly perked here. For the WPF NSOS crew who seem to be rocking along just fine is it safe to ignore this pushy marketing? Some other countries don't even have a word for menopause but is that because there is no dis-ease there or are they just completely ignoring women's issues?
My thoughts are that the reason why DHEA isnt effective in menopausal women, is bc DHEA is a raw material from which estrogen, progesterone and testosterone are made, BUT the "factory"... the ovaries, is shut down. No factory, no hormones even if there's plenty of raw material. Sure some if these hormones can be made in the adrenals and peripheral tissues, but those too have been affected by age and only produce a fraction of the amount needed to keep a woman healthy and youthful.
Ovaries are not the only source of hormones, as you know. Post menopause, women make the amount needed via adrenals glands, organs and even muscle. This form of needed and very sparing hormones are not detectable in blood since the body uses them immediately. The ovaries produce vast amounts of estrogen for the purpose of procreation; when this "shuts down" the aforementioned systems produce plenty of a form that is more widely available (again, does not sit around in blood stream). Testing is pointless. Using exogenous hormones is very dangerous. The only way to produce vital hormones for healthful aging is via the consumption of fat and protein from animal sources.
@@olderandwiser127 hi Michael. After menopause my understanding is that the ovaries stop making the potent estradiol form of estrogen, common during a woman's reproductive years. And starts producing estrone, a far weaker form of estrogen. Since estrone is made in the fatty tissues, after menopause the body tends to hold onto fat, which accumulates in the midsection. This weaker estrogen isn't sufficient to stimulate osteoblasts and the creation of collagen needed for strong bones, smooth healthy skin, flexible tendons and ligaments, preservation of organs and tissues thru out the body. That's were HRT comes in.
@CookieMonster_ Psalm 91. ... A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked. ... He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him. With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.
@CookieMonster_ Your claims are not evidence based, but out of your unkind uncompassionate heart, and you shall get what you deserve, unless you apologize and repent, in which case I will forgive you if you repent. God bless!
I don't think it's an either / or situation. Sometimes, even with a perfect diet or lifestyle, you have to take medication or supplement the diet. For example if you have hypothyroid disease, you're menopausal or have type 1 diabetes. Supplements for things that are hard to get from diet like B12 or vitamin D.
Thanks a lot. The whole food plant based diet and the VEGAN lifestyle is a choice based on compassion and truth, and so the long term overall health and well being is just a garanteed side effect. God bless!
Thanks a lot. Why not eat 100% whole plants, which benefit us without any side effects? Why eat animals or manmade chemicals, when whole plants contain everything we need or materials for us to make thiings we need by ourselves? God bless!
Plants made me bloated, tired and caused my eczema to flare up horribly and the carnivore diet literally cured me - plant based isn’t for everyone especially me and I USED to be plant based. In fact I was for over ten years…
Because it MIGHT create a small advantage, But studies only found it to be helpful in older men and really well in women in late 40s on up. Should it be banned in Sports? Absolutely not! It doesn't really help enough in young men as young men already have ample supply of DHEA. Taking DHEA or taking a couple days to relax and meditate with zero stress? Well, studies have shown that the meditation and relaxation did better for performance and bringing up DHEA in young men than just taking DHEA on its own by a long shot. Why is it banned? Because since it is a precursor to hormones anything with hormones or hormone support is not allowed if it works or not! I find it ridiculous and maybe someday that will change. As a man at 55 and in the heath field for years I still find taking DHEA a benefit as we age I also find many jump on the band wagon saying you just need to eat healthy and exercise, well this is not always the case, their are plenty of very fit and healthy older people that some do need DHEA, Stress can drop DHEA even in younger people and as well as genetics also can play a role in poor DHEA production. We do are best to eat well and exercise and deal with the stress of life and when we age sometimes taking a supplement can be the answer after all other requirements are in check!

That is produced in your body by taking DHEA

Not DHA. He’s talking about DHEA
What about supplementing with Pregnenolone, which is supposed to help the body raise DHEA?

A pill does seem easy as opposed to finding and composing a big plate of glop and then eating it
What is wrong with taking ‘pills’? If they’re more effective than food, what is the issue?
