    In this video, I'll share nine watches that I think present much more interesting choices for the money compared to some of the most popular Rolex sports models on the market. We're not looking at alternative dive watches to buy instead of the Submariner, but rather focusing on the price ranges represented by iconic Rolex models and showcasing some of the most intriguing options you can get for the same or even less money. I always like championing watches that are less talked about when possible. Even if they are not always for me it is important to highlight those that are doing things different. Applauding only safe choices leads to an industry of complacency.

      Fully agree. They make approximately a million watches a year. The majority of the watches are simplistic movements (hours, minutes and seconds, some with or without dates). The materials used are fairly commonplace. Robotics do the vast majority of the work involved. And yet, for some reason, people pay stupid money to own one when there are plenty of far more interesting options available for much less money.

      In my view, at least, the Model T approach towards Rolex and it's manufacturing is not even the worst of it.
      As you said, they make 1,000,000 ⌚ per year, which is more than sufficient to meet demand, yet engage in nefarious cartel pricing that inflates prices well beyond fair value.
      Ultimately, this manufactured void of inventory - for mechanisms that get nominal and seldom upgrades unlike Omega, for example - infects the remainder of the ⌚ industry by depleting inventory from other brands and raising their prices at the end of the day, such as Tudor and Omega.
      Rolex is indeed reliable and well-built, despite its mechanized and "vanilla" craftsmanship, but definitely NOT WORTH the artificial premiums that the market demonstrates; this also includes the MSRP values.

    • @Bmx2live2008
      @Bmx2live2008 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Rolex is very much like Apple, it's a lifestyle brand with a history of very successful marketing campaigns that bend the truth just enough to get away with their claims, they actually contribute very little to horology, all their claims of inventing things like the oyster case, the automatic winding wheel and so on are all false and were taken from other brands, that doesn't mean that their products are inherently bad or that the finishing is sub par but for the price point they compete in they're entirely reliant on the strength of their name, to this day they've never created anything resembling high horological complication and yet their pricing on some models rivals that of perpetuals and Tourbillons from other brands. It's a strange niche in the market that Rolex occupies and they're unlikely to ever be dethroned from it, the saving grace from a consumer standpoint is Tudor, essentially offering the watches enthusiasts fell in love with the brand because of at a more compelling price point devoid of the hype beasts flipping them for profit or flex culture

    • @MakerInMotion
      @MakerInMotion ปีที่แล้ว +15

      @@Swiss_Army_Knife1780 So Rolex is basically Harley Davidson. But Harley is not doing well these days. Millennials won't spend $35K for the product's tough guy image. They'll buy the Honda that's better for 1/3 the price. Rolex better hope younger generations are still willing to sit on waiting lists and pay cartel prices. Every generation the cultural values get re-shuffled.

  • @willbrink
    @willbrink ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Good vid with good info, BUT, If we continue to compare everything to Rolex as the reference, so will everyone else and it just maintains their stranglehold on the market. There's no lack of watches that are superior to Rolex for less $, but by always comparing them to Rolex (which is still a consumer brand...) we can't blame buyers for continuing to view Rolex as the reference by which all others get compared, because that's what this and other channels are doing! Just sayin'...

    Being an absolute novice in my journey of building my watch collection (Tudor, Oris, Longines, Seiko and Orient). I recently had an opportunity to handle some “high horology”pieces. The closest dealers of these pieces are 5+ hours east or west of us, so we’re not in a luxury Watch market. I don’t want to name the brands as to come off knocking them, but they are brands often featured on many Watch related channels in a “luxury price point.” Then I handled several Rolex pieces at an AD, where there were some additional brands that weren’t at the previous location. I was very surprised at the complete level above all the other brands the Rolex pieces were. The feel, finish, attention to detail and the use or manipulation of the complications. For the purpose of product comparison only, I have to remove the business models being employed by any of the brands and the access or lack of, to them. Yes, this was my first exposure to many of those brands, including Rolex. They are all impressive pieces, but of the pieces I handled, Rolex was head and shoulders above the rest. I really appreciate TB’s knowledge and insight to the world of horology and he’s always introducing brands that are exquisite and intriguing; mostly far beyond my reach, but nonetheless his approach and knowledge are phenomenal.

      @fivedogsranch9288 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mbrum3230 I didn’t want to refer to the markets or pricing because at the point the upper level of “luxury,” in my opinion, fluctuates so much many people start equating it to investments. Then it all gets convoluted for me because I’m not “investing” or looking to earn on my collection. I hope my children and grandchildren will find dear to their hearts what I have in the world of watches. I’m not wealthy by any means so consider this; at MSRP, Rolex and price point equivalents, are beyond my means without budgeting for quite sometime to be within range of purchasing power. Ergo the brands in my collection reflect on what appeals to me at my collecting comfort zone.

    Brilliant to see such varied options and some fantastic watches. If hazard a guess though that for the average person in the street, if you’re dropping £5 to £10k on a watch, you’re probably going to put that money into one of the more popular brands. Some very interesting choices but all should be aware that with most of them once bought your money is gone for good with resale possibilities vanishingly small in some cases. For me these are the kind of watches one buys to add to a very complete collection that includes more mainstream brands, not including Rolex if that's your choice. Rolex is a brand I wouldn't be without at least once.

    Even more than 'what else you can get for the Rolex price point' is the 'what you can get that gives the SAME Rolex feel at a much cheaper and more available price point yet retaining the quality'.
    I.e. Submariner alternatives: Tudor Black Bay, Blancpain, Yema, Sinn, Damasko, Rado Captain Cook, Squale etc. etc.

    Not hard to beat Rolex. They are just for people who want the brand name so they can feel cool. Objectively, Rolex is the best at nothing except marketing.

    TH-cam videos about watches cannot appear on our feeds without reference to Rolex in one form or the other in the title.

    Not speaking ill of Rolex, I would say all of those options are more interesting and unique than the similarly priced Rolex models...
