The fact it's mechanical is just wow, I can't find words to how crazy this is. No one outside of those who know and have been told how it works would believe it's an oldschool watch. It looks 100% like some smartwatch, but nicer xd. Fantastic.
Insane piece of engineering. Design isn't for everyone, and personally it looks like an Apple watch face (maybe intentional?), but I can truly appreciate the amount of engineering that went into this design. Thanks for covering this piece, Teddy!
I really like the design and the uniqueness but honestly 40k for an ETA based watch regardless of how much it’s modified is simply too much. Also I doubt this could be serviced outside of Ressence itself. I don’t want to be dependent only on the manufacturer.
This video is what you do best: Elaborate on high-end watches, showing them with smooth close-up camera moves and talking your way through the whole time. And still making sensable conversation. Bravo. How do you come up with such watches? I would like to see a video about thàt. ❤
If ever there was a piece that would be a conversation starter this is it. The fact that it has no 'bling' is a huge plus for me. It may well be beyond what I'd even consider paying I can really appreciate the engineering and design elements that have gone into it. Being oil filled would also make it super legible (if you understand how to read the time on the piece) compared to the let's say regular designs. If money was really no object I might just take a look. Many thanks for sharing.
This is the best looking watch I have seen in my whole life! I love how this looks like a piece wearable tech but its purely mechanical. It is not too flashy but it looks elegant at the same time. Reminds of something Dieter Rams could have designed. Retro but very futuristic at the time. Timeless even. This is one of those pieces of design and egineering I would be amazed by still after many years of owning and wearing it.
Design is beautiful, engineering is exceptionally impressive and functionality seems useful. That said, I don’t think I would allocate $40K towards adding this piece over others that offer more complication, traditional design aesthetic and better wearability. I do like it but it would only be added to the collection after I added others. Collectibility over wearability from my point of view and for my taste. Cool timepiece either way.
I agree. I would get this watch if I could afford to spend $40K without batting an eye, but that amount is a serious purchase for me, and I would go for something more traditional. So I will just have to wait to become a multi-millionaire to get one lol.
I love my Ressence. Rollex guys (I own a few TBH) always ask me about it and about 20 minutes into the conversation they are totally stunned. I ask about their watch and the conversation is 20 seconds. Tony Fadell (inventor of the iPod and Nest) helped design their type 2. I emailed them for service and the owner of the company replied himself. Ressence is the brand that only a few understand, but they are the people you want to talk watches with.
I had the pleasure of trying this watch at the store a few weeks back and at first I thought that there was a sticker on the dial to protect it from scratches. Really amazing and agree with you Teddy, this flips your notion of what a watch should be. Then I start thinking should I save for this one or part with the savings for a Langa! Again great content, thank you
Even though I'm never going to own one, I appreciate your episodes on high horology. Showing us the pieces and giving us your insights helps me to grow in my appreciation of the art. Thanks!
I thought the stuff from Tokyoflash Japan are crazy, but this is just next level. Thanks for explaining it in more detail, always wanted to know more about these.
Everything about this watch is a feat in engineering! I love the look of the oil filled dial, reminds me of those oil filled gauges in the 60s muscle cars. The rotating dial, date function display, no crown, all just amazes me. Is it expensive, yes, and most watches that brake the normal trend tend to be. Having about 30 watches myself, ranging from Timex, vintage unknowns, right up to my gold Rolex Day-Date, Patek, and VC, I will be adding one of these to my collection, even if I have to thin out the collection a bit, its just that unique!! I have not got this excited about a watch since the Lange & Shone Zeitwerk hit my radar.
I have lusted after a Ressence since I first learned of them. I will never be able to afford one, but I sure would have loved one, especially when I was taking two dive trips every year.
Looks amazing, and I would definitely own one if I could ever afford it. I would love to see some more macros and closeups of the hands and dials and see how they work. I also need to see this transmission and how the dial interacts with the base movement. Very cool!
Looks like an automobile dashboard is circular format. Yes love it. It's a fine line between a top notch horological device and a gimmicky thing. I think it has art / design school looks. big love.
What an outstanding piece of tech and engineering! Not the type of design I would usually display on my wrist, but I do find the design surprisingly elegant nonetheless. If I had the budget for it, I'd definitely pick one up! Nice review!
I saw a clip of one of their models recently and wasn't paying a ton of attention. I assumed it was a smartwatch, the way the elements would rotate around the dial like that, and I guess the oil-filled front gives it that AMOLED screen look. This is so cool!
This is literally the watch that got me into watches when it came out, then I found UrWerk and HYT, finally realizing I needed to pay attention to watches!
Hey Teddy. I’m new into watches and I have 2 questions that may be silly: 1) How to wear a suede strap watch? I’ve seen some cool combinations there but I’m not quite sure how would I wear it, specially considering that I’m not the biggest fan of Chelsea boots. 2) How to wear a gmt watch? Is it ok to use it in a normal situation? Or you should limit the use to travels so you don’t get hate from the community? Love the content!
I absolutely love this. Wonderful piece of engineering. It is pricey and out of reach for most, but definitely for those who can get this, it's a statement piece. I would love to own one some day.
Do a video on the Longines Master Collection Calendar Chronograph watch you had the other day on your Instagram page. Never seen it before but fell in love right away.
I'd be interested in your take on HYT watches. They too are a bit on the polarizing side with their design & also feature some unique tech in terms of it's use of bellows that control 2 different liquids to give a running account of the time. I think watches like Ressence should be celebrated for their innovation. I'd rather spend the money on a watch that created it's own thing than an AP that's just a nice watch that's living off the innovation of the past.
It's a nice watch indeed. The price is high but if you can afford it, go for it. Many people evaluate a watch based on its re-sale price, (with all due respect) while apparently forgetting to enjoy the watch. And as an added bonus, it's a watch that prompts conversation with those who notice it on your wrist. It remains a unique brand distinguished by its ingenious system. As a result, it also retains much of its value.
I love it when watch brands display innovation, but it is always tough to sell these new ideas given the high price tag. I understand that innovation requires cost in research, design and engineering, but for $40,000 people are presented with the choice of innovative watchmaking or ultra-fine finishing, and 9 out of 10 enthusiasts will choose to pay for finishing
You're getting ultra fine finishing here too. It simply comes down to people not wanting/liking this design over what they're used to. It's that simple. But me, if i had the money for an expensive watch in this price range, I'd but this over something people usually buy cause i personally value innovation and creativity to this degree a lot more
Beautiful and an amazing watch, a real work of functional art and machinery. It's WAY outside of my price range but still, amazing what they have accomplished. Have a great day and thanks for sharing. -David
Tony Fadell the guy that created the first iPod and the Nest thermostat helped create the Ressence type 2 watch. It is way more technical than this model.
I will get this watch...someday. Love the material science, fluid dynamics, horological aspects, Electrical considerations, and design. Yeah, I'm making a new piggy bank for this.
It’s been on my radar since their first version but like an addiction I tend to buy many $1000 watches over 1 really nice one. Looking back I wish I had saved for the really good stuff instead. Live and learn.
The only issue with this watch is that so many people won't realise or be able to appreciate this watch at first glance considering it looks so much like a smart watch. I love this piece - one of my dream watches for sure
@@Hnair1982 Yeah I get that I suppose but that just means many won't understand or recognise the very precise and amazing engineering that went into every little part of this watch. But I do get what you're saying.
I like the way no hand or chapter ring ever obscures any other hand, chapter ring, or logo. Apparently this was one of the original design goals. Thus, also no need to set a particular time for a good photo.
I understand its unique, but it still reminds me of the montblanc timewalker urban. Its firmly its own thing; and I truly appreciate it. Just the design language gravitates me towards that modern chronograph/pilot watch aesthetic. Its a good look.
Certainly impressive engineering and pushes the boundaries of watchmaking. Kudos to Ressence, but I don't see myself ever purchasing a watch north of 5-6k ish. It's funny as much as many want to see something new, exciting, and different...tried, tested, and true venerable pieces with heritage seem to generally win out in the end.
This watch is absolutely amazing, 40k is a decent family suv in the UK...but maybe the family can watch that rotation as you all walk to the next destination, I'm in 🤣🤣
The fact it's mechanical is just wow, I can't find words to how crazy this is. No one outside of those who know and have been told how it works would believe it's an oldschool watch. It looks 100% like some smartwatch, but nicer xd. Fantastic.
This is stone-cold one of the coolest timepieces out there. It's unique, it's gorgeous, it's smart. What more could you ask for.
Insane piece of engineering. Design isn't for everyone, and personally it looks like an Apple watch face (maybe intentional?), but I can truly appreciate the amount of engineering that went into this design. Thanks for covering this piece, Teddy!
Thanks for watching my friend! Glad you enjoyed the video.
their design language existed years before the Apple Watch
@@EdwardViaTomato Oh! Didn’t know that haha just an uncanny resemblence
I really like the design and the uniqueness but honestly 40k for an ETA based watch regardless of how much it’s modified is simply too much. Also I doubt this could be serviced outside of Ressence itself. I don’t want to be dependent only on the manufacturer.
@Bruno Desrosiers what has that got to do with my comment. Interested to hear your clarification. Thx

It’s about time this watch got recognition!
I love the engineering aspects of this watch. Truly creative and revolutionary. But close to $40K is a deal breaker but for the few.
There are some at around 20k too from this same brand . Check them out
I'm sure 20k is a deal breaker as well lol
One of the best new takes in the watch world, wish to my guts that I could own one someday.
This watch pushes what I understood as a watch to a whole new level. The engineering is just so creative.
This is a stunning timepiece - thanks for presenting it Teddy!
This watch is so cool. It’s a mechanical that looks as if it were digital, I wonder if any of this technology will ever trickle down.
They did just release a more “attainable” model in the past couple of months. Still expensive but more in reach than this.
@@TeddyBaldassarre It was not meant for the average watch collector. More like a piece of art that may interest someone like Mr. Wonderful.

an engineering marvel to be sure, but DEFINITELY stealth wealth. like a lot of people are saying, it looks like a smart watch.
Yes, it's a tremendous amount of effort/cost to make a mechanical watch look like a smartwatch.
What a wonderful watch it’s beautiful and the engendering behind it is even more amazing, thanks for sharing teddy
Very impressive and bold piece of engineering. For folks that like unique pieces it's surely something to look at.

I have been watching Ressence since a while, the sealed mechanism in oil bath is amazing
Absolutely love it. I’d buy it if I had the resources. I too love the ingenuity in this watch and applaud them for being original and innovative.
Great video. Very unique timepiece. Not sure if I would shell out that much for it, but always love hearing about different companies
