What an alley-oop. I feel honoured to have made it on Steels channel and not been a youtuber that got absolutely destroyed. I like to cater my videos towards less skilled players and try to cover more general topics with more in depth topics coming later. Thanks a lot for going the extra mile and really clearing things up.
i went through a 2 week slump where i couldnt even beat silvers on my smurf account, what ended it for me was taking a break for 3 days and coming back. For me it was basically what he said, the worse i played the more i bashed myself for it and it just got worse and worse. now im back in usual form and have even had a few rank ups in the past week since it ended.
Slumps for me are when I'm in a bad mental state, a state where I easily go tilt. sometimes you can take the best engagements and the best possible positioning but still feel like nothing is working.
+Shifty that's when you refresh your mental state > go out with friends, go to the gym, exercise, etc. take your mind off of being angry/negative then you'll play better
+JoshNissan yeah I noticed that sometimes helps. not always though, sometimes I feel like I'm mentally disabled because I'm so bad. But totally agreed on your video.
+Shifty Im like that my self, i can even be mad for getting in a little clutch, just because it feels like i have 150 ping and everything, even tho im in the mid 30's, its annoying as hell
Shifty absolutely. Sometimes the game just isn't in your control and you're constantly thinking "what am I even supposed to do to this" and in those situations I like to just put some music on and practice by myself for a while if I get to the point of tilting
Wow, thanks alot for your help lately Steel. I'm so happy that I've finally realized why I'm inconsistent and what I need to do/look at to improve and become more consistent. Keep up the good content, you're truly amazing at teaching!
yo bro i just want to thank you for this master piece, ive been watching this vid for years everytime i get into a slump i just pull out this vid and it has always helped me (im in a slump again)
I like how Steel was smirking and looking all excited when he mentioned "Get an ice cream" lol. Another great and informational video btw, always like your stuff :)
It's simple. It's what he said: "Take a break from the game". Slump is underperformance caused by mental issues. Sometimes you may not know what's the problem. Something little happened irl and it affects your game in negative way. Your brain is so used to CS and its repetitiveness (not the situations happening in the game, but the enviroment - maps, weapons, ppl etc) that it starts autopiloting as soon as you launch the game. Let's say you are only playing dust II. You know all the common spots, you know all flashes, smokes etc. The enviroment is the same and your brain is like: "oh it's this map, I know this and that so I will do retarded, overconfident and idiotic things and since I know everything I will be relaxed and the reflexes and the expectations will be lower, cuz ofc - I know this shit". The solution is simple: either move from your comfort zone and try to learn new things in CS or just take a break. Believe me, I am in huge slump right now in which I am missing the easiest shots of my life, but I decided to play FIFA and other games, just to make my brain work and experience other things, so when I return to CS I will be a little rusty and my gray matter will start re-learning the already familiar things. I literally dropped two 30-ty bombs in 2 games. And I was like: "Man, I feel so uncomfortable I feel like I am playing new game and it's been only 2 days". That's what I am talking about - my mind is not realizing that it's learning and trying to re-adjust things that I already know. Yes I have the skill, I know the enviroment, but those things are mechanically did by my muscles and stuff while my mind tries to re-learn. That's why I dropped 2x30 frags in 2 games, because the game was interesting to me and my brain was learning and enjoying it in the same time. *Thanks to anyone who has read this, I will be glad if I helped*
thanks have you got any tips on me being a 13 year old going through puberty and wanting to be a pro when i am tilting so much and going through slumps. what would i do in this situation
I get In slumps so much and they last way over 3 months and I just started playing fortnite because I quit cod because of a slump and I'm not going another 3-4 months of just bad games because of my slump and yeah I've been playing fortnite for a week now and I'm already in a slump and I'm quitting gaming because of slumps I'm not playing bad for 3-4 months straight pretty much every other month I want out of my slump right now and I never want to get in another again
I lose my skills thanks to slumps I got really good aim and building in fortnite I spent a lot of time practicing and now that was a complete waste of time because I got in a slump and now I'm back at beginner level
thank you for this video! My teammates get really down on themselves when they aren't playing really well and I always suggest breaks but they want to push through it. I will show this video to them to help them understand how to build off of their mistakes instead of letting the mistakes become bad habbits.
This is a great video. I love your suggestion to do other things when in a slump. Exercising helps me alot every time i feel like i start getting into a slump
It also helps to have teammates that you can properly communicate with. Paying match making or pugging with random people will not help the player be consistent is his play.
is it possible for slumps to be long term?-some players have had weeks and even months of not performing and then suddenly arose to their previous/better level, which i think is largely just due to confidence or the role they're playing in the game
KennyS' slump was mostly mental, he stopped playing as much and disliked the game / team after the AWP nerf and didnt feel too excited to play. Just an example.
A video how on you think this applies to pro players/people playing above a PUG/Matchmaking level would be interesting. Considering you aren't going against people worse than you most of the time in these scenarios which would promote bad habits. Also, how do you think this applies to awpers that like to be aggressive? Taking these spawn based picks is a large part of my game personally, moving to wherever i can get a timing advantage (as well as moving the awp) is something i like doing and a good portion of this is just hitting shots rather than making pushes that aren't sound. As always, nice video.
I have a problem with slumps, but often times when slumping, I'll still have many good engages. For example, maybe when i peek someone theyre not looking at me, and they need to flick to me in order to shoot me. Even in this advantageous scenario, I'm still losing fights. Is this still a strategic / play problem, or is this an aim problem? Or both?
+Scott Hannemann hopefully steel will reply to this, but from what i've found, you should have a picture in your mind of what kind of fight you should commit to (there are also a couple of great videos on Josh's channel that will go over what a favorable engagement is). Anyway, when you have that in your mind, you stick the gun fight and don't think, just kind of go on auto-pilot. Maybe you take some damage and fall back because you get spooked, maybe you dank tap and become a pug lord, maybe you die, what does it matter? It was the fight you believe you should have taken and any fight is a gamble where you try to manipulate the odds in your favor as much as possible. Of course you're also most likely playing with random people a lot of the time and unorganized CS with people you have no chemistry with is not conducive to a consistent play-style. Pros go negative in MM because they literally cannot rely on their teammates at all.
we are casual players very few of us want to be pro and make csgo as an esport job :( what i suggest play csgo have fun for 1 year and then focus on your life..again!! if cs is your life, then for how long will it be?
the biggest thing that helps me is taking a day or two off and just playing some other non-fps game for a bit, but the problem is sometimes i cannot do that because i have scrims or a match that night, so i'm just fucked
+Justin Fedorchak Do what is the best for you, take a day off, just relax, maybe surf, i do all that but i am very consistent , never really peform bad but that's how i always was even in other games, some people are god like one round then the next match they play OKAY, everyone is different.
Justin Fedorchak So you're part of team, i guess you guys do that as a hobby? I suggest not playing scrims or serious matches multiple times a week, it will wear you out imo. How often do you have scrims?
Steel I seem to be having an issue with my spray control. It's not consistent at all, I find a great way to spray, but then I think about it too much, I think about where my arm is, how i'm holding my mouse, how im pulling the mouse down, and then I lose how to control the spray, and constantly hit people 3 times instead of the 4 to get that kill. Any thoughts on why my I keep losing how to control the spray?
Ultimate Super CSGO Movies Production 2k16 As an LE, practicing over an hour every day or so to try and get a consistent spray, I don't think just practicing will cut it.
+Cam Ettery Mate you just need to practice more'. I'm GE and I still do such things like you said. The answer to it is just practice, practice, practice so you do it automatically without even thinking about it.
+Cam Ettery Muscle memory. Keep playing until you get to the point where you can connect your spray subconsciously. You don't rly need to practice spray patterns unless ur changing sensitivities or something.
I think i'm the slumpmaster. Sometimes I play really good, doing my peaks right, having the timing on my side, outsmarten my opponents and then other times I go 5-10 kills max in a game vs people that are not better than me but i'm just getting so frustrated that i take my duels with way to much risk and without consideration (or i'm getting pissed off because my teammates use me as bait.) And for some reason it feels like when someone (me or one of my friends) is in a slump it gets the whole 'team' in a slump and it can ruin an entire evening. You know the games when you feel like everything goes wrong, you know how you played it before and it worked every single time up untill that game. You're just not hitting a bullet and the more rounds the enemies win, the cockier they get. => More frustration. Worse plays, worse results. This then goes on until I say fuck this shit. I start playing another game or do something completely different like sports, going out, have fun outside whatever. Once I come back from this, i'm going up again. And it feel liks a huge difference. Anyway, what I wanted to say: Good video Josh as always.
Screw gaming this is too much I just got out a 2 and a 1/2 month cod slump in February and 3 months later here we go again another slump I can predict how long each slump is going last (2-4 months) so I quit cod because of that and Ive been playing fortnite for about a week now and take a guess what's happened Yeah I'm a slump in fortnite and I've only been playing a week like how???? I'm not even good enough yet to get in a slump I can't handle this so I might as well quit gaming then
I've been in a slump for a month now. I've been looking at these videos, googling, I've taken a week long break, I still can't come back to my old form, I used to top frag and carry about 80% of my games in LEM. Now suddenly one morning I started playing like I normally do and I'm missing all the easy shots, my game sense is non existant(I was pretty good at clutch situations), bottomfragging every single game. I'm already down to DMG and yet bottomfragging. I'm playing mostly solo and if not I'm with my lower rank irl friends, though they are better than me nowadays. I have no idea what to do... I'm practicing in different aim training maps, 1v1 servers, deathmatch servers but nothing helps.
Chances are thats its not hit regs or 64 ticks fault when you miss...people should really start embracing that thought (Unless its one of those 25% choke dm servers)
Picture me this, Steel. You love Counter Strike. Your dream is to become a professional player and you know your goals and how to get there, but you don't FEEL like playing. Whether it being laziness or boredom. How do you get past that?
+davey bui over a week is too much probably. depends on what you do in between. if i go on vacation and don't touch the comp for a week, CS looks really weird and too fast for me
+Shinx :) CS:GO n' moar! Then its about who takes stupidly aggressive peeks or bad positions. usually it depends on what side you're on, CT's get the advantage is a majority of the scenarios. That makes it a question of what side are they playing on.
+Nilesh Patil Just because it's free doesn't mean it's good. Windows 7 is perfectly fine at the moment, there is basically no advantage in updating unless you want Cortana spying on you. It might change in the future when we actually get games that benefit from dx12.
i m not using cortana. i disabled cortana.....i feel win 10 interface look cool...small adjustments are good for me.......win 7 is not bad at all...but win 10 feels better for me........and some graphics advantages......i m getting littlebit more fps on win 10......its just what i feel... and i m happy..............

why is m0E permanently in a slump? I thought people went in and out of slumps but he seems stuck
+Fraser Young When was the last time he went to the gym? Coincidence?
+JoshNissan LOL
+JoshNissan savage as fuck, just how i like em

lol whenever I see this question on stream steels response is "jerk off" I'm sad he refrained from saying this in this vid
+AndradeKid was so tempted to.
JoshNissan rofl
Haha! Using Desmos to graph Sin(7x) to show the "slump" in counter strike - I love it.
Something that often helps me in slumps is watching frag movies, it boosts my motivation quite a bit
DESMOS ONLINE CALCULATOR COMING TO CSGO RIGHT NOW OH BABY
+Adriano Hernandez Desmos is life

+Lo3 Why not wolframalpha?
Most likely one of the videos that explains it best, up to date.
if i would take a shot everytime i play bad i would be dead in an hour
This is a great video. I love your suggestion to do other things when in a slump. Exercising helps me alot every time i feel like i start getting into a slump
really informative, a huge part of playing consistency is all in your mind
thanks steel for the pro tips! now since I put all my hard liquor next to my PC I finally got out of the slumps and getting consistently rect by novas
Really nice, steel. Tks for posting
You are the one take God
As a player that has been in a slump all month, thanks steel!
"The difference between a professional and a student is consistency" this is what my band director told me and this completely applies to csgo
been 4 years but this vid still helps me a lot. thanks man :D
It also helps to have teammates that you can properly communicate with. Paying match making or pugging with random people will not help the player be consistent is his play.
Do you know the principle of supercompensation in sports? Do you think it can be applied to esports too?
Steel THANK YOU

+christiancyano again, slumps are mental. if you're feeling shitty out of game, you're gonna feel shitty in game too.

Yep my slumps last 2-4 months every time
that feel when steel is advertising g2a on his videos and kinguin in the description

Holy fuck this video is so good.
How to push past slum...... THROWING JOKE INC.
Jk JK JK DONT HATE LOVE U JOSH
This helped a lot thanks!
I only play well when I apply spray paint on my nose. Should I continue to danger myself and be good at CS or go back to being bad?
thank you very much man!
that cos graph is dope Kappa
As a kinesiologist thank you for mentioning exercise
Now I want icecream.... Bit too cold out though.
thanks
I just stop playing for a week. Changing res, sens or any other stuff will make it even worse, just take a break.
Of course you're also most likely playing with random people a lot of the time and unorganized CS with people you have no chemistry with is not conducive to a consistent play-style. Pros go negative in MM because they literally cannot rely on their teammates at all.
this helped, thx!

thanks this vid helps me a lot :)
When I start doing bad, I basically just blame myself. I get really mad at myself which kinda causes me to have anxiety or be depressed for a day :/
Thank u for this
thx for the videos steel :) love u
I’m in such a bad slump rn bro🥴never been this bad for at least 3 weeks
im winning aim battles, fragging, but still losing the game, am i taking bad engagements?
VID IDEA: How to know what type of engagements to take?
You are good
voo's video?
How come steel doesnt haven any skins on his streams?
Has anyone ever mentioned you look a little like Ed Miliband?

if im playing bad i just swap skins that seems to work for me
I'll never get out of my slump I hate that word

I'm the slump god Im really good but I lose my ability to do good because of slumps and I stay in a slump for over 3 months really unfair
What if I have bad sensitivity  ?
If you are used to a certain sensitivity, then it's not bad, it just can't be too high or too low.
Shots of alcohol make you better in CS, steel confirmed.

I've been in a slump for a month now. I've been looking at these videos, googling, I've taken a week long break, I still can't come back to my old form, I used to top frag and carry about 80% of my games in LEM. MLG Penetrator Are you out of it yet? What did you do?
Whathewhatgaming No I couldn't pull my shit together, so I went onto a break a week after this post and haven't tried again since. I will soon.
Are you out of it yet? I'm guessing yes since it's been three months.
Are you out yet?
MLG Penetrator some say he is still in the slump
Chances are thats its not hit regs or 64 ticks fault when you miss...people should really start embracing that thought
(Unless its one of those 25% choke dm servers)
The real question is-is if a slump or a slimp?!
Picture me this, Steel. You love Counter Strike. Your dream is to become a professional player and you know your goals and how to get there, but you don't FEEL like playing. Whether it being laziness or boredom. How do you get past that?
he'd probably tell you to take a break, from my experience, if you forcefully play you do pretty badly
That's true
What I do is I just go into like aim botz or anything like that and just nail my shots over and over again till I get it then take a brake
Gotham Metal I just keep dm'ing and 1v1'ing until I feel its enough, watch some fragmovies for motivation too
who else feels like they forgot how to play the game lol? ive been going 10/22 for so many games now
COACH MEH JOSHAY
is there such a thing as TOO much time off from CS?
+davey bui over a week is too much probably. depends on what you do in between. if i go on vacation and don't touch the comp for a week, CS looks really weird and too fast for me
+davey bui in other words don't go for vacations xD

+Shinx :) CS:GO n' moar! That's called FAIL SPRAY OMGWTFBBQ
ahaha
+Shinx :) CS:GO n' moar! Then its about who takes stupidly aggressive peeks or bad positions. usually it depends on what side you're on, CT's get the advantage is a majority of the scenarios. That makes it a question of what side are they playing on.
was a joke
Shinx :) CS:GO n' moar! I gave a serious answer.
i broke my 144hz and i have to use a 75hz until its repaired . thats probs why im playing like shit
I get worse the more I play, kappa
Ffs if I take 2 day break i get 30 bombs in rank a all over the place. But I cant play more cuz i get rusty in my gamesense. I get impatient... :/
'i get rusy in my gamesense' anyone with half decent knowledge of the game will laugh at this noob
hey steel use windows 10............its good and free upgrade...........its better than win 7
+Nilesh Patil Just because it's free doesn't mean it's good. Windows 7 is perfectly fine at the moment, there is basically no advantage in updating unless you want Cortana spying on you. It might change in the future when we actually get games that benefit from dx12.
i m not using cortana. i disabled cortana.....i feel win 10 interface look cool...small adjustments are good for me.......win 7 is not bad at all...but win 10 feels better for me........and some graphics advantages......i m getting littlebit more fps on win 10......its just what i feel... and i m happy..............
if i play bad i don't think i need to change my res, i think my aim is fak...
Keep it clean, family show.
+OhhExiLe get a new profile pic please.
