This is absolutely nuts. I inherited a fender lap steel dated 1953 (I think) from a friend of mine. He told me his dad bought it when he was a kid, tried it twice, gave up and put it in the basement. I have messed with it before but it's so different from what I know I haven't quite cracked it. But here you are, showing me what appears to be THE EXACT MODEL I own at 3:59. Insane. I love lap steel and this has only made me want to try harder to get it. Thank you Jack!
This was beautiful. Absolutely stunning. Allowing him to speak and share the rich history of his family, uninterrupted, was perfect. Remarkable musician. I can’t like this enough.
What an amazing thing to be a part of a family legacy like that. I slide a LITTLE, and it’s a challenge to not get clunky on a regular setup guitar. Ive made some pretty good 3-string CBGs and I stick to those! Its wonderful to see a true aficionado work his magic. Thank you Vulf, and of course, AJ.
If that happens, and if there is any justice in the world, AJ is about to blow the fuck up. I've been bingeing his stuff since I saw this video and he's absolutely amazing.
Yes. STUNNING. A textbook definition of music for music's sake and the joy therein. The passage at 10:22-10:29 that goes Amin7->Bmin7->A6/9(?) and THEN to the absolutely devastatingly beautiful and all too brief slide between Amin/B to B13 (idk i'm bullshitting music theory here). It's just soooo moving.
Wow. Thank you Jack S. for your work in finding these absolutely essential histories and sharing them with the world. Once our understanding grows, the mind changes, and the whole world changes with it. Once the mind changes... what is left? It is a new world. Thank you for your work, it makes this world a better place. And thank you A.J. Ghent for sharing this story with the world.
This is such an amazing chronicle of a vital musical legacy and evolution. Thank you to A.J. Ghent for sharing these insights and stories and to Vulf for putting this together!
I love the understanding in the "MUSIC" for lack of better words these men and women of the vulf are in tune with a level of livelihood only a handful can understand pay close attention children and observe soul and music as it's really intended to be much love to the team ❤❤❤
This family musical lineage is so wonderful and amazing, I would have loved such a background of skills, dedication, passion and focus in my family roots.
Shout-out to Blind WIllie Johnson, who occasionally used a knife as a slide. Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground was included on the record that was put onto the Voyager probes.
Makes me want to start playing this technique. I have the gear already (guitars, bottleneck)... If anyone has a bit more insight... Should I setup a guitar with high action to begin with? Is standard EADGBE tuning also standard with this technique? Also, amazing playing from all these players. The outro was so great, gave me chills!
@@FlorentChardevel Action: AJ Ghent mentions near the end of the video he decided to use normal (low) action and got used to it using light touch. I can also speak from my own experience it’s possible to use normal (low) action for slide! It’s also much practical, since you can then use the same guitar for both slide and normal guitar technique. (BTW, I also play from above like he does, but not as good as him… 😉) Regretfully, he didn’t mention what tuning he uses…
How does he do those different chords at the end? I would imagine he’s playing an open tuning…but then how do you get those beautiful different chords???
He mentions he uses a light touch of the left hand, not necessarily a light slide. From my own experience I can say it’s better to have a heavy slide, since then you don’t have to press it onto the strings, just gently hold it
A.J. hosts the video while Jack more or less haunts it
How?
Deservedly.
lmao, could not describe it better. It's like he's watching over my shoulder.
While most people use the Gregorian calendar to measure time, I personally use distances between the holy trinities
the heartbeat of the universe
It is always a blessed Tuesday when a new holy trinity drops.
Holy Trinity Tuesdays and Out Of Touch Thursdays
I have been introduced to so many amazing musicians thru Vulfpeck! Thanks guys!
That intro was straight from the heart.
Holy Trinity of Modern Sacred Steel Influenced Guitarists:
Robert Randolph, AJ Ghent, and Derek Trucks.
That close up of dad in church shredding the steel, the woman behind him praying, and him lookin up like “I am a badass” loooool so good

AJ Ghent! On the Lap! Steel! Guitar!

This is so rad. Been following this guy on insta for years loving his content, now an interview on VULF?!? my soul has been nourished

I bet there will be a new Vulf recod with A.J. Ghent featured in!
If that happens, and if there is any justice in the world, AJ is about to blow the fuck up. I've been bingeing his stuff since I saw this video and he's absolutely amazing.
@@Holygiant Rango 3!!!
That last song with his kid watching in the mirror was gorgeous. Looks like the next generation could continue the legacy.

Derek trucks absolutely has this sound and I love it.

Thank you Jack, for sharing a piece of the music world i have yet to be exposed to!
thanks for softening my pineal gland once again
This is such an amazing chronicle of a vital musical legacy and evolution. Thank you to A.J. Ghent for sharing these insights and stories and to Vulf for putting this together!
This video is awesome I love the holy trinities series! I’d love to see y’all do one of these on organ players!
Hands raised
Arms swaying
Blessing received

His folks may have sang through the slide, but A.J made it sing as a choir man. Harmony and melody. Top tier shit right here
As soon as I heard him mention 8 strings, I had to ask, Can A.J. Ghent djent?
Jack strikes again! Love these music-history lessons
I saw Robert Randolph play Michael Jackson's "Thriller" on Halloween 2009 in New Orleans.
I'm still getting over it 🙂
Got to see him in 2002 at Bonaroo, it was amazing. I had no idea this is where it all came from.
Shout-out to Blind WIllie Johnson, who occasionally used a knife as a slide. Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground was included on the record that was put onto the Voyager probes.
The Vulfverse is always expanding
I love Just a closer walk with thee . Great tune
YES! Today was already going great!
Another top drawer documentary, thanks Vulf!
So glad you drop these right before my lunch break
Never clicked so fast yet
the playing 10:04 onwards is pure magic to me
Now imagine you're in the room, 4 years old, and that's your daddy.
Thank you guys. Amazing format, keep it going! 🎼
I always knew the lap steel guitar could be mobilized
oh holy! I've been waiting for this
You gave me a tear in the eye
Beautiful
You should invite AJ to Vulfpeck's next NYC gig!
It really does sound like it’s a singing guitar
Edit: 7:37 perfect example
7:37
Thank you so much for this. I started out on lap steel.
This is Monumental! The Legacy continues.
How...have they formed this coterie of amazing musicians?
God bless you, Jack. 🙏🙌✌❤
i cant play for shit but i always knew any guitar could sing. my uncle joe could play his ass off.
Your playing!!!! Whoa! What tuning are you using if you don't mind me asking.
SO COOL, I love that sound so much like some amazing dobro playing from the blue grass guys. Anyone know what tuning A.J uses, is it open G?
Makes me want to start playing this technique.
I have the gear already (guitars, bottleneck)...

Also, amazing playing from all these players. The outro was so great, gave me chills!
That's my question too - are they in standard tuning or in a bluesy open tuning like DADGAD/DADF#AD?
I’d guess Open E, sounds like he’s playing open E on the intro. I know that’s what Derek Trucks always uses and he makes it sing
Any "open" tuning - I like E and D. You don't have to raise the action but it helps a lil.
Thanks!

What a player.
How does Mr. Ghent tune his guitars - regardless of the height of the action - when he plays a regular rig with a slide over the top?
no freaking way, my prayers were answered
His dad at 6:50 just straight up killing it!
Jack on portrait mode, am I wrong?
I've been waiting for a new holy trinity holy fuck instant like
TAKE HIM ON TOUR PLIIIIIIZZZ
7:50 - That's a man who knows he can play :D
Awesome.
How does he do those different chords at the end? I would imagine he’s playing an open tuning…but then how do you get those beautiful different chords???
can’t even imagine playing an 8 string lap steel fender, might be undereducated on the topic but wow that just sounds unreal.
This might be a stupid question but can you slide on a bass?
Yup! High action helps but isn't necessary. You can try it out with a literal glass bottleneck
so hard to play slide on a regular setup. Does he use a very light slide?
He mentions he uses a light touch of the left hand, not necessarily a light slide.
From my own experience I can say it’s better to have a heavy slide, since then you don’t have to press it onto the strings, just gently hold it
Jack… ask Alan Akaka about the old time Hawaiian lap steel players. He’s here on TH-cam.
holy fuck 5 seconds in and it's blowing my mind
Ft Pierce represent!! This guy is a legend.
Fascinating! :-)
yeah just plug that first 40 seconds directly into my spinal cord thank you very much
Great!!
Oh wow
the holiest of trinities
What tune is Ghent playing at the end?
love this
YES!!!!
Oh my, some stank coming up out that PRS.
It's been 3000 years...
Gloray!
YES
I believe I'll dust my broom
Yesssss
AJ GHENT MY BOY!!!
Dark mode on!
very nice man
Coincidence a holy trinity was released right before St Patrick’s Day? I think not…
Thanks hawai’i
This is cool but this ain't Holy Trinities without Jack Stratton speaking to a microphone in a random backyard.
AJ plays all the non-vocal parts on guitar like Jerry Douglas plays dobro

hot darrel!
Cool
nice
Oh he put some stank on it!
you know
0:16 that sings
Yoooo jack!
OH SHIT
10:03
What the hell was that intro
I am the most liked comment. Wow
Great trinities.. but I need a “you know” counter to really enjoy the video 100%.. you know!
