I have a 14 year old gray myself. I understand having conversations with him. Flannels calls me mommy. 10 years ago, I was fighting cancer. I would come back home from chemo and radiation, and he would be great. At the beginning, my hair came out. He looked at me and was so concerned. Mommy, what happened to your head feathers? You don't have any head feathers. I told him I was sick, and the medicine the doctor gives me makes my headwaters fall out....but not to worry, when I was done with medicine, they would grow back. He was so prscious...looked at me a second, shook his head and said, My poor mommy is sick. He did that the whole year. Plus, he called himself Dr. Flannels Welby, from the TV show we watched in syndication. One morning, he was so excited and said, Mommy! Mommy! Your head feathers are growing back in. And so they were.
Ooh my God what a story. Being in the most difficult condition a human can be, but your intelligent bird helped you get through that. Unbelievable that he noticed the change of your hair. My goodness, precious little parrot... 🐦❤

As a cancer survivor myself, I understand how pets can be the best medicine, I didn't have a pet but my neighbors Boxer would always come over to visit me after my chemo treatment. God bless you and I hope you're doing well ❤

Who needs entertainment when you have Gizmo ?? He is soo funny 😂😂
Except he's not entertainment: he's a sentient, highly intelligent bird who has an inner life of his own... a social, flocking animal who is part of their family flock just as a child would be. That's a lot of responsibility. A lot of people get a grey thinking they're entertainment, a wind-up toy that will perform on demand. Gizmo talks because he's loved properly. People forget that parrots like this live a long time, that they can be noisy, messy, destructive, expensive. Some greys choose not to talk at all. This one is very talkative, because of his personality and the way they love and treat him. Lots of interaction and love. Lots of repetition.
The average amount of time people keep a parrot in our country is only 2-3 years. These birds can live to 60. There aren't enough parrot fosters in this country to take them all. And the instability can make a parrot neurotic with unwanted behaviors, which she has addressed before. Screaming, cussing, bloody feather picking, aggression, etc. Parrots are more particular than dogs and cats, who will assimilate into any family that adopts them. Parrots have to choose you, and you can't force them to assimilate.
And most veterinarians won't do avians for a variety of reasons. It gets expensive. You have to remember that all living things get sick, injured or old at some point... even us. Owners need to establish with an avian vet before then, for annual exams and toenail trimming, etc. People don't think about that, and don't realize that birds need maintenance and they mask their symptoms until they can't any more, if they've never been to an avian vet, by the time the owner realizes something is wrong they're really sick, they may not find an avian vet, can't afford the financial responsibility... that's how I got my grey. Just like a child.
I love my grey, he humbles me... but he also takes work, time and money... and mutual respect and love, which this family provides in abundance. That's why he talks and learns so much.
But still... I wear earplugs at
night sometimes, so I can sleep beyond his sunrise serenade. LOL! On the other hand, if I lie in bed in the morning, I can sometimes hear him practicing a new phrase in the other room. It's like hearing a child building their vocabulary.

He’s a very special bird & he always puts a smile on my face. He’s such a character & so very intelligent. He’s an absolute delight & I love watching you two communicate. He’s a very clever boy & I’m so glad he’s now living a much happier life. His larger than life personality always brings me joy. Great job, Emily! 💕

That is a great way to look at that. We think he has so much filed away in his little brain, as he is constantly coming up with new things.
His American accent sounds like a quirky city sidekick, that pops in with his 2 cents and a one-liner whenever he can, and always gets the last word.

African Congo grey parrots are now endangered in Congo, due to poaching. They are arguably the most intelligent of all parrots, surpassed only by ravens. This grey is finally being treated the way he deserves and literally needs. She's right about everything. Mine is very talkative, too. He's also a rescue. They've got the intelligence of a first-grader, a 6-7 year old child... and when they speak, they aren't just mimicking... they understand exactly what they're saying or asking for (except when they mimic water and electronic sounds, which they pick up on their own, or imitate the family dog...). And they talk when they want to. They're not performing toys. Gizmo and his family are so very lucky to have found each other. It's also important to make future arrangements for them, and she's got a child who will be the next generation to take care of him, whom he likes. They can live long enough to go through three generations. It couldn't be more perfect. Gizmo's videos have made me very happy. :)

You have done a remarkable job in only 6 months! Have you started him on learning shapes, color, material (What is this made of?)? You already probably know how much African Grays love to learn. There's a TH-cam site called "Bird Tricks." It's a married couple who trains parrots to be rehomed and abused parrots (there are so many abused and abandoned parrots 😔) to learn to trust people and eventually to be rehomed. And they travel to help people train their parrots. Anyway I love Gizmo!!

Who taught him all these words? It took lots and lots of repetition to teach my African grey and he picked up sounds around him so quickly. Whenever I had friends over he would blurt out "who farted" which had everyone cracking up. He got me out the bath to answer the telephone so many times - had me fooled every time!!

We ultimately believe that because he was caged for 16 years that he had to get very good at communicating so he would get attention from his previous owners

@@hopesprings4967 hi Hope! Gizmo is a 16 year old rescue who was caged for the first 16 years of his life. We rescued him back in April of this year and he has come so far and progressed very much. He absolutely loves talking and we think because he was only caged that his vocal abilities is what got him the attention with his old owners. He’s so highly intelligent and we are so glad he can be free and loved all the time now ❤
