- Wonder Boy in Monster World, known in Japan as Wonder Boy V: Monster World III, is a side-scrolling action RPG originally developed by Westone and published by Sega for the Mega Drive/Genesis in 1991. It is the fifth game in the Wonder Boy series and the third game in the Monster World sub-series, following Wonder Boy in Monster Land (Super Wonder Boy: Monster World on the Japanese Sega Mark III) and Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap (Monster World II: Dragon no Wana on the Japanese Game Gear). It was also the last Wonder Boy game that was given an official English release, until the Wii Virtual Console release of Monster World IV in 2012.
Versions for other platforms were also made. In 1993, Sega released a Master System version of the game specifically for the European market, while in 1994, Hudson Soft remade the game for the TurboDuo under the title of The Dynastic Hero (超英雄伝説ダイナスティックヒーロー Chō Eiyū Densetsu Dainasutikku Hīrō?), featuring an all-new theme and cast of characters. In 2007, the Turbo Duo and Mega Drive versions were re-released on the Wii Virtual Console download service.

I played this game a lot when I was 15/16. What a wonderful game! I am now 43 years old and still a Sega fan! I miss this period of my life, young with no worries. I am so happy to have experienced the 90s. Thank you Sega for all these awesome souvenirs ❤❤❤❤

This was 1 of my fav sega games too...do yall remember the music when u hear it and still can kind of hum along? I have thought about this game many times since then (I should have rented it again, may be I prioritised trying different ones).
I loved the music of this game so much. This game was so hard and it brings back bittersweet moments of my childhood playing this.

Honestly i never understood why i kept you as my friend. Perhaps your passion for this game made me sympathize with you and decided to let you abuse my home, my system and my patience. I thanked God at the moment that you killed the final Boss of the game, and then forgot about me and deleted me from your friends list.

I absolutely adored this game back in the day. I'm 43 now but man, SO many great memories! I was randomly/stupidly stuck on that ocarina bit, but after that, i powered through the game. Used to get EXTREMELY frustrated with that last boss, though!! 🤣🤬

I used to stare at pics of the game in Mega Play magazine just waiting for this game to come to the US. Loved the graphics and soundtrack…. I gotta play this again on the Genesis Mini!
I got this on the 360 years back but didn't get around to it til recently and was quite surprised at exactly how good it looked for a 16 bit title. Some of the the most vibrant colors and downright best use of 16 bit technology to of it's time.
The best part is that it's still really fun to play. Definitely worth checking out.
Wow I’ve been playing this game for genesis on an emulator in 2023 and mad respect to this guy, bc this game is extremely hard. I spent over an hour in the game before the first boss. This dude beat the game lol

This game reminds me too much of my tender youth, and yes time passes much too quickly. What good and wonderful memories of the time. I still play it from time to time thanks to an emulator.

Wait... "Monsterland" was once a peaceful place until it got invaded by monsters? Maybe the monsters weren't the real bad guys here...
There is a patch that fixes several bugs in this game. One of them can be noticed right at the beginning when the character enters the house. You can notice that the character is floating relative to the ground when he is talking to the wizard at 0:43 minutes into the video. The patch fixes this, among other things.
Greatest game I ever played
Grown up with Mega Drive I never had this, also not on my Master System. But I enjoyed the 90s with its games and I still like that game by watching it. It looks a lot like a Master-System-game cause it's so simple, but I still love the graphics and "inside-outside-house"-animation. It does not need to load a new screen, it still has the same size, I love that.
My uncle bought it for my birthday...it was the most expensive game in thé store 😂. Best game I ever had❤

I have absolutely no idea what the attraction was, but I came across this game when I was 20 (1992) and fell in love with it.
I spent many hours trying to get good at the game and I eventually conquered it; man it was so satisfying. Looking at it now I can't figure for the life of me how the hell I managed to beat the game; it doesn't look easy.

2017's "Wonder Boy: The Dragon's Trap" is a remake of "Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap" from 1989 for the Sega Master System, which is the game previous to this one. Come on, you guys.

I played this game when I was about 8 or 9 and never could get past "the melody is not quite right" and had no idea how to progress. Came here 25 years later to see how it should be done.
Just got it for the switch can’t figure out how to play the stupid ocarina I love dragons trap and Asha in monster world but this orcarina mechanic makes me want to dip out of this game really annoying what damn buttons to you push there is no explanation
Nearly 30 years after first playing this I have downloaded it and was having such fun until the moving platforms at the end. Ruined my teens and now ruining my forties!!!

I remember playing that one. One thing really bugged me, I don't get what's up with the Amulet. That house you bypassed on the way to the chest with the Amulet, it appears to be a trap. In return for telling you which palm trees to search, he wants you to give him your Ocarina unnecessarily. However, it looks like either way, the Amulet takes a slot that normally belongs to a healing potion.. That means you could expend it mistakenly to heal yourself, and be stuck without finding Poseidon. But if you hang onto it, you have to go all the way to Poseidon without a healing potion, and that rather stinks if so. Shouldn't the Amulet be able to be in a separate slot?
Wait a minute. I just did a replay and I noticed that the Amulet is listed as a white lettered word, just like Lamp, and I thought it was labeling what was really my potion. I should have paid closer attention when reading.
You can still play this game its on the PS3 store so grab it before the store gets taken down its only a matter of when now i think.

I finished it today and I was confused.
Playing this on the XBox Sega Classics I tried to get past the locked door at 8:49 and selected the magic lamp thing but nothing would happen it wouldn't play the musical tune.
You have to play the tune yourself. The lady who gives you the lamp tells you the combination. You have to hit the correct combination so write it down. Sometjing like A , B, A, B , C , C A, B....problem is the original buttons were on Snes so Xbox buttons are different 😅

@@marvalcomicsfan123 I heard something about the flute being called ocarina in Japan, a bit like how they call all precious gems emeralds. I can't remember the source though... There are also ocarinas in the Phantasy Star series, beginning in 1989. They seem to be pretty common in RPGs. I agree this is probably the first game in which the player plays musical notes on the ocarina.

AP - Attack Points
DP - Defence Points
SP - Special Points

1:12:30 I just finished this game today and I thought he was Bock lee temjin from WB1, Monster Land and Dragon's Trap. I mean, it kinda makes sense because he was turned into a Dragon (it says he was possessed but you get the idea right?)
1:17:06 Also here, he says "Some hero". Perhaps he is a descendant of Bock Lee Temjin but his role was not to be Wonderboy. Of course the role of a Prince is still important.

Good old fashioned trial and error! Only 4 to play with and they validate each step. Pretty easy!

The Dragon’s Trap was so much better than this game. From gameplay, to music, to even graphics I think.
The Dragon's Trap was released two years earlier on the Sega Master System. This had brighter and more detailed sprites on a technologically superior system.

@@omegabiker I think there is a very similar version as the arcade game for the sega master system but I never owned one of them. I think the version u are remembering is called wonder boy in monster land not monsteworld look it up on TH-cam. There is also a collection of all the wonderboys for ps2 which has the arcade version and has all the versions but it's over 100 on eBay.
