    Alright, another segadrunk video!
Here's a nice story about WonderBoy: there is this hugely popular comic book series called Turma da Monica here in Brazil. Another popular thing is Sega, because there actually was a company specialized in distributing their consoles here: TecToy. And TecToy actually went on to make two mods for Wonderboy, changing its graphics, texts and themes to that of Monica's. So not only it was really cool to see the characters from the comic books in the game but also they were actually speaking portuguese, which we had never seem before.
So yeah, WonderBoy is a really good game, but it holds a special place in brazillian hearts.

This is the game that I remember playing a lot because of the Purapril Castle theme. Just an FYI: Westone is pronounced like “West tone” not "West One". If you look at the kana in Japanese it’s spelled ウエストン "Ou-Eh-Su-To-N". According the the Monster World Complete Collection manual by Koji Aizawa, The Westone name is derived from the first characters of the names of company founders, Ryuuichi Nishizawa (Nishi = West) and Michishito Ishizuka (Ishi = Stone).

Okay so basically for those that want to understand the series, the Monster World games mostly share the same base gameplay with different variations on the formula while the non-Monster World games have completely different gameplay formulas for each entry in general. Said games, in order, are:
WB1: Wonder Boy - First WB game. A simple side-scrolling arcade platformer, with the occasional skateboard gimmick. Also ported to the NES rebranded as Adventure Island, which turned into its own unofficial spinoff series sharing similar gameplay. The SMS port is known as Super Wonder Boy in Japan, while the Game Gear version is called Revenge of Drancon in the US for some bizarre reason. Also got a weird remake called Wonder Boy Returns.
WB2/MW2. Wonder Boy: Monster Land - An arcade direct sequel to Wonder Boy with a completely different gameplay formula, starting the Monster World series. Compared to later entries, the game is more linear and stages are time-limited (as this is an arcade release. The SMS version was renamed to Super Wonder Boy: Monster World for some mystifying reason, but that's where the "Monster World" name started. Also got a PC Engine port, retooled into a licensed Bikkuriman game. What is Bikirriman? Well, simply put, it's a popular brand of wafer snacks in Japan. Yes, really. You can't make this up.
WB3: Wonder Boy III: Monster Lair - An arcade autoscroller with run n' gun and sh'mup segments. Ironically, the Genesis port is probably the worst one. Oddly enough, it's the only Wonder Boy game in the series to get an untouched port on the TurboGrafx/PC Engine CD.
WB4: Monster World II (JP)/Wonder Boy III: The Dragon's Trap (int'l): Someone on the localization team messed up here. Anyway, this game started life on the Master System, and it's the one that really solidified the Monster World formula. My personal favorite. Also got ported to the TurboGrafx as Dragon's Curse, with an original reskin to sever its ties to the Wonder Boy IP, plus it received an amazing remake just a few years back.
WB5/MW3: Wonder Boy V: Monster World III (JP)/Wonder Boy in Monster World (int'l) - This game.
WB6/MW4: Monster World 4. A more simple game, and easier than the other Monster World games, but it's still pretty great. Recently got a decent remake called Wonder Boy: Asha in Monster World.
WB7-ish/MW5-ish: Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom. This is a spiritual successor and not directly tied to the Monster World series, but it continues the gameplay the series is known for.

I loved that game when I was younger. It's my favorite Wonder Boy game, but there's one *huge* flaw: the final boss. In the original Japanese version, it's ridiculously easy to beat it. In the western port, it's ridiculously hard - AND you have to rely on luck not to die.

Magi Nation is a good GBC RPG that has a lot of humour and reminds me of a SNES RPG if you ever decide to check that out.

I didn't get into this series until my 30s, but it's exactly as you say; fun to play, fun to explore. There's a version that got released for switch that's pretty great. Allows you to change into monster forms...all these games kindof blend together and lack distinction from themselves, but thats a very shallow downside. Good fun!

Years ago I had thought about getting a Genesis mini. That good one that they released in I think 2019 not that terrible one that was by ATGames that I regret ever purchasing.
Anyways I hope this wonderful game is added to the switch online. After my regular membership of $20 per year expired that includes the online play and the NES and SNS games, I decided reluctantly due to the cost to go ahead and get the higher tier one that shouldn't even be $50 per year because it doesn't add as much as the original I wish it was $30 per year, but anyways I sucked it up and I now have Genesis games and then 64 games on my switch and I do hope they add a lot more because there really isn't very many games for the N64 or Genesis yet which makes the cost even less worth it

I was about to swap my Genesis out for another console after knocking out a few games, but might need to finally try this one again. Played it on an emulator awhile back but like you said it's a bit slow to get going so I didn't get too far. Curious to try out Monster World 4 as well.

i still think this is one of the best Genesis games ever made. and in "best" i mean, over all graphics, music and presentation. this DOES NOT look like a Genesis game. the color in the game is used SO insanely well. looks like something that only the SNES wouldve been able to do. same goes for the music and sound!!! this game DOES NOT sound like a Genesis game (especially one of its time, i remember renting this when it came out). I usually CANNOT STAND Genesis sound... but not ONCE in this game does it ever sound like something cranked out on a Genesis soundchip.... and the presentation, everything just WORKS! as SNESDrunk said, this game holds up EVEN TODAY! I still replay this game from time to time, and im NEVER disappointed with it. literally looks like something an indie dev on Steam would drop in 2022!

Love this game. You didn’t mention how insanely hard the final boss is, though. I cannot beat that guy without savestate. Doesn’t help that the last save point comes before the boss rush before the final battle. Oof.

It is seriously unplayable. It's impossible to cast the fire storm spell you get, and it's impossible to get past the part that wants you to ride a jellyfish.

Not sure if you covered it before but Monster World 4 has a translation patch. The game is technically better than 3 but lacks something the 3rd one had.
