It's not the same team. Y'all give Bungie way too much credit to think they'd actually have the same guardians lore-wise.
It was just an Easter eggs if anything, because the genders don't match. It's supposed to be a male titans and hunter with a female warlock. But in the Seraph and Lightfall trailers, it is clearly a female Titan with a male hunter and warlock. Also, the Titan's ghost is different.
Lastly, their armor is the default D1 armor, despite the fact that those specific guardians were already seen wearing different armor in each trailer.
Different team. Easter egg/reference at most.

You're supposed to prune characters running out of interest as you go, not kill off the most interesting one and leave such a void of charisma in the franchise.
Did they ever even replace the Hunter Vanguard, or did they also retcon vanguard stuff out of the franchise, like Factions, when they forgot to keep up with their dumb decisions?

If anything gives us inspiration, it's this. Our original boys were lost to the darkness. The only way that we could avenge them is by driving back the darkness with all our might. Even if we fail, their deaths would have not been in vain. See you out there, brothers.

The D1 team and D2 team are not the same.
1. Their armor is different. By Taken King, the OG team had custom armor from their adventures. The D2 team is in New-Light gear.
2. The genders don't match. OG D1 team is a male titan and hunter, with a female warlock. But the D2 team has a female Titan while both the hunter are warlock now male. Also we never hear their voices in any of the D2 scenes.
So, I'm pretty sure it's another team used as a placeholder for the cliche fire team composed of one of each class. If anything, it's an Easter eggs/reference....but the fact that their armor and genders are completely different makes me believe is just another random team of relatively "new light" guardians.
@Peniley Majorey for what it's worth, it was discovered that the final shape was planned to be the original Lightfall, and the lightfall we got was basically filler

I’ve been wanting that armor since the first concept art they showed of it. It’s hands down the NICEST titan set in the whole series(imo) and it’s not even in the game 😭
Bro I feel the same way about the hunter armor. Don’t get me wrong some of the newer armor sets for the classes are super cool. But I just really want that OG classic drip

Not the same team bro. These are D2 New Lights. The D1 team has custom armor by the time of the Taken King. They would not be caught lacking like these guy were. They would 100% not have underestimated the witness.
For all we know, they died in the Red War.
Ah Dw, as nice as the video is it’s not the same team. The original team was entirely male(first team in the vid) this gang had a female titan. Plus this armor is meant to represent all of the new lights, the original squad would be massively better geared by this point.

I just realized in the scene where you see the ghost get sliced to ribbons...you just barely see pieces of that guardians head doing the same. God damn.

There are two different teams from those D1 trailers. There's the one at the beginning of the vid with the male warlock and hunter and female titan. And the one with the male hunter and titan and female warlock 0:25. The first team doesn't seem to reappear until Curse of Osiris (assuming it's them with different armor), and it looks like both teams are working together in VOG.
(Edit: The other team has a female hunter, so that was wrong. 1:00 [pause to see])
Based on the helmet of the titan in the VOG raid at 0:55 and everyone at the tower at 1:20 (if you pause), it looks like it's the first team that died or just the titan.
This way more in depth than I intended, because I am currently procrastinating for a midterm that I have tomorrow. Thank you and gg.

I didn't realize how much I loved a fireteam of nameless characters until now. As a guy who's been playing Destiny since 2014, this hit me hard.

The art style/feel of old destiny just hits different… it had so much potential to be a gritty, wild-frontier space game.
My best friend passed away last week just before LF. We have been playing Destiny since 2015 and he was so hyped for Strand.

I can't describe how happy these old trailers make me. I was 11 years old watching these getting hyped as hell for the game I watched them over and over again
Destiny never lived to many peoples expectations, me included but this gives me nostalgia of the hype I had for it
I never even give that scene to much thought other than The Witness being all powerful, I never even thought it could be the OG Fireteam.

I think the set you’re looking for is the Prodigal Set that came out during Forsaken, which I think you can still buy off of Xûr and loot from Dares of Eternity iirc.

From what I've heard, and seen, the guardians that die are actually the "select your class" Guardians from the D1 character create screen. I found the footage and compared the two. The armor definitely matches up for the Titan.
every journey comes to an end sooner or later, there is no way to prepare yourself for others leaving. Even when its something you know is coming it's so fucking hard to come to terms with. Remember to tell those who matter to you that you love them you dont know just how long you may have them for..

I think the OG design guardians are just supposed to represent the more experienced guardians in lore (players who have been playing since Destiny vanilla)
So it's a methapor that they are letting the og's go to suit a new generation of guardians... No wonder they made the expansion straight out of The Infinity War
I choose to believe that these guys were New Lights that became friends and supported us (the main character God tier Guardian) from behind the scenes, clearing out areas before and after we arrive to a strike.

This is still one of the coolest moments of lightfall, such a terrifying demonstration of the power of the Witness where he just glances at them and divides them like its nothing. If they ARE meant to be the OG fireteam then its a great way to set up how powerful the witness is that they can wipe a crew that has gone though almost as much as the player with the merest look at them.
The strength, the funny remarks, the love this fireteam had for each other... I vow not to drive back the darkness, but to eliminate the witness and his pawns.

It's not them; a lot of people keep saying "OG fire team" because they're wearing the armour from the character select screen in D1.
The fireteam we saw in the Epilogue cutscene and who got sliced by the Witness, are not the same as the fireteam from the live action trailers.

so apparently only the Titan died. In this season's Trials Ghost's, Ship's and Glaive's lore tabs, we learn that it was Shayura's fireteam that tried to face the Witness, but only Reed-7's and his ghost were sliced.

I really don't think they're the same tbh. There's some consistent models, like the Titan from CoO being used in the Lightfall trailer and the Warlock from the live action trailer being in CoO, but I really don't think the 3 guardians from Season of the Seraph are the ones from the first trailer. Besides, the context of the first trailer is a former Guardian telling his son a story while reminiscing on his days as a Guardian. Regardless, the live action ones are DEFINITELY not the 3 shown in the first trailer and they likely aren't the ones shown being killed in Lightfall either
