- Lance Reddick, voice actor for Titan Vanguard Commander Zavala, has passed away at the age of 60. These were the final lines recorded by Lance that can be heard in-game before his passing. it wasn't the same without cade. now we lost another vanguard guardian. but, there's aways memories and our ghosts as company in the future.
Not only is Zavala one of the forefront NPC's, but Lance Redick owned that role like a BOSS for a decade, and where we go from here is an extremely difficult task to pull off. THIS is the most crucial task that Bungie has ever had to figure out and it needs to be done right AND in a way that HONORS the man himself, Lance Reddick. He loved this role and community.
I think they should write in an story for the next season about Zavala's Ghost being destroyed and then Zavala being seriously injured. His injuries could cripple him and prevent him from continuing the fight and one injury could cause the loss of his ability to speak. His inability to speak, crippling injuries, and loss of his ghost would force him to step down from leading the vanguard. Bungie could then move Zavala's character model near the monument of Cayde6 with the function that players could hug him or shake his hand. This would allow the character to still exist in some capacity.
As for who could replace him just have the player's character model become the new leader. I mean the player character has been speaking for a few years now unlike before where they were a mute. Maybe in time after the pain of losing Lance Riddick doesn't cut so deep anymore Bungie could create an in lore reason for healing Zavala. In doing so it doesn't completely heal his vocal chords and thus gives an in lore reason as to why he sounds differently because of a different voice actor.
It wouldn't be the first time Bungie replaced a well known actor in this franchise...Peter Dinklage comes to mind albeit that was for vastly different circumstances.

@@_gungrave_6802 I think they should only hire a replacement long enough to give Zavala an honorable resolution to his second life (ideally sacrificing himself to defend others), and then let the character find peace in death (and an afterlife if you believe in one) with his wife and son. I think that would be the best way to honor the character that Lance Reddick brought to life.
His character arc is pretty well resolved after Season of the Haunted, and while they could come up with more developments for the character with a new voice actor, I'd much rather see them close the curtain on him and leave him firmly as a part of Lance Reddick's legacy.
A sequence where we see the future with a older zavala who tells us that from the moment we arrived he knew we wouldn't rest until our mission was complete PEACE then he would say those special words farewell guardian and we would snap out of it only to be greeted by zavala who tells us we have work to do
Even if they find someone with a similar voice, it's just not gonna be the same. Rest in peace Lance
I honestly hope they find some way to kill zavala off or make him less prevalent in the story.
If he got a new VA it would just feel fake.

I know this shouldn’t be one of the biggest thoughts on my mind right now, but I’m honestly really curious what their future plans for Zavala are. I don’t see them replacing the VA (that to me just seems disrespectful to Lance) and unless they already planned on it, I don’t see them killing Zavala off. Whatever happens I hope they treat Lance Reddick and Zavala with respect.
I feel Bungie will make sure to do right by him.
tbh the way i see it is this:
1) kill him off - logically makes the most sense to retire commander Zavala and also to respect the role of Lance Reddick. Maybe we can have an interim VA to like send Zavala off in-game (sort of how Cayde was voiced by Nolan North instead of Nathan Fillion for Forsaken which is still better than killing off Sagira off-screen because bungo either didn't get or wanna pay for Morena Baccarin). However, there might not be as much of a "shock value" in terms of players buying an expansion because their favourite character in-game is gonna die (i.e. Forsaken). I could be wrong about this because given the situation right now, people might actually buy an expansion as a way to pay respect to Lance Reddick and send off Zavala in-game.
2) replace with a new VA. might be a bit disrespectful given how Zavala was voiced by Lance Reddick since D1 Vanilla + also always reading out some player's texts "as Zavala" so idk about this. Wouldn't mind if they just use an interim VA to send off as stated in 1)
3) (somehow) manages to replicate his voice using AI sampling. this i feel is a bit more disrespectful than 2) ? idk i am kinda on the fence regarding this issue cuz i highly doubt AI can capture the soul of his voice as well as the demeanour of Commander Zavala.
again, this is just my view please don't attack me. But If I did say something wrong feel free to correct.
In my eyes if they do kill off Zavala they have to give Zavala a proper send off

Kill him off in a heroic fashion and have Mara reveal that she knew him before he became a guardian and that she tried to talk him out of leaving the distributary, along with many other awoken, to help the survivors on earth "But he just had to be heroic cause that's who he was. That's the last time I saw Zavala, or, as he went by back then... Lance"
Farewell commander. Thanks for all memories. Since D1 that voice has been so iconic. As a guardian we got it from here but as a fan, Lance, we'll miss you.
Say what you want about Destiny, but you have to admit that the voice actors are some of the best things of the whole game, and Lance, without him there wouldn't be a Commander Zavala, that scene on WQ where he slams his fist into the table was amazing, thank you Lance, you brought us one of the best characters we've ever seen. "Guardians never die, but we never forget those who do"
Lance really sold the emotional distress and feeling of betrayal the Awoken Commander felt hearing the actions of the Traveler. After all, Zavala was one of the most hopeful believers in the Traveler. I felt more empathy for him after witnessing the events of Season of the Haunted. For many New Lights, and Destiny Veterans, Zavala was a guiding light of what Guardians hoped to become: an inspiration to many and a friend to anyone to offer an open hand.

As much as we want this to be his final lines as Zavala, there’s a good chance he had stuff pre-recorded for future seasonal content.
That said, I’m gonna miss him like you wouldn’t believe. One of the last good characters in this franchise, such an iconic voice that I never got tired of hearing.
I'm just worried that when they run out of his lines, what are they going to do? I mean, yeah, could just recast him, but I feel like he's too well established, that they have to find someone who fits Zavala, not someone who puts their own thing into it.
I would want as little change as possible. If the next voice actor tries to put his own style , even just a little bit, it's going to ruin it for me. It won't be Zavala.
I'd rather they just kill off the character, if the next voice actor doesn't do a (at least near) perfect Zavala.
Nowadays' tech they can easily synthesize his voice!

Maybe Ikora will finally become a useful member of the vanguard or maybe Sloane will return in a future season and be promoted from Zavala's deputy to Titan Vanguard.

Losing zavala captures the feeling off the darkness begining to consume all far more than anything bungie has written thus far, Reddick has been THAT impactful to the destiny community
It shows how a truly emotional and impactful performance can entirely shift the perception of the story. Lance Reddick’s performance was lightning in a bottle, and was extremely hard to capture. He will be very missed, but never forgotten.

@@iCore7Gaming Not quite. In fact, with Lightfall, Light and Dark are no different than a screwdriver and a power drill. They do the same thing, but one is more dangerous and requires less skill to use. The other requires more skill and hard work. But achieve the same results.

A true guardian through and through. Out of all the voice actors we've had, Lance was the one that brought the most emotion to the character. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for all the great memories. May you find the light throughout your journey onto the next life.

He was the greatest Guardian I ever knew. Not the strongest but a true leader. A leader who made us believe in our cause. A leader who united us all no matter how different we are. A leader who withstood everything that was thrown at him.
After the death of Savathûn, everything we believed in became much more thinner between the light and dark. Yet our commander never gave a second thought. Rather than drowning in the river, he rose from it. Never giving up as his will still blazed with electricity through his veins.

I… haven’t touched this game in years. I am… well, was, a Guardian Hunter, though now long retired. And yet, even with my weapons gaining no more than dust, and my cloaks beginning to fray, hearing this news hurt me. As a character, Zavala was one of my utmost favorites, beaten only by Cayde-6. As a voice actor, Lance was undoubtedly the best among them all, though I can list many more who did outstanding work. But Lance and Zavala just felt so right. Which makes his passing sting that much more.
You were a helluva man, Lance. And one helluva goddamn Titan Vanguard Commander. Shine on in The Light, you crazy Diamond. This one’s for you. 🍺

His passing on St. Patrick’s day has made me change this celebration forever. Lance is and was an exceptional actor and voice in entertainment. He’s not Saint-14 HOWEVER; I am now moving forward and retiring the celebration of St. Patrick’s Day, and will now celebrate St. Reddick’s day. Eyes up guardians. Silante!

His voice is one of the only voices I enjoyed listening too in my childhood, whenever I was sad and needed an escape commander Zavala always gave me something to do and he always made it seem like it was the best thing to do to protect the people and help others to make yourself feel like you have purpose. I feel in some way he will become the new traveler, protecting all of us and giving us power to move on and heal.
i got to this scene just two nights before he passed away. I was sitting there thinking how great the voice acting cast in the game is. How lucky we are to have Lance Reddick and the others. I'm filled with sadness. 60 is too young for someone so seemingly full of life and still living it.
You'll always be remembered and treasured in our hearts. And we will never forget what you've taught us. Rest In Peace Mr. Lance. And thank you for giving us such a great character, such a great leader. Thank you Commander.
