  • IT'S HAPPENING! I've started a new story where I have a really cool premise but still need to discover the plot. Let's start with Chapter 1, shall we?!
    ☟↓ QUESTIONS FOR YOU BELOOOOOW! ↓☟
    U P C O M I N G W R I T E - I N W / B E C C A :
    On Thursday, February 21st at 6pm CST!: • Video
    D I S C U S S I O N Q U E S T I O N S :
    Do y'all get ideas for stories by thinking of one thing that leads you to another thing which makes you think of ANOTHER thing, etc. etc.? Like 1 + 1 + 1 = 1,000,000?
    When writing the first draft, do y'all ever skip parts within the same scene? Like thinking of a really cool sentence even though you're not "there" yet, so you just jot it down and then write up to that point? Am I alone in this!?
    PLEASE tell me about a time when you sat down with the intention to write one thing and something completely different came out!!!

    Not sure how true it is, but I read the reason people's middle names are still pretty private now is because in the middle ages they believed you needed a full name to curse somebody, so to get around this they added a second, secret name to keep you safe. Could be a total urban myth but I liked it, and it (possibly) shows how deep-seated some of the superstitions go, and how far people would go to circumvent things (like your village). Your story sounds awesome btw

      YESYESYES okay I'm definitely going to google more about this! Something about what you said is tickling in the back of my brain and I'm wondering if it's something I've read before too, so I'll have to do some research! I'd love to hear some basis in history for it! THANK YOU! :)

      I’ve heard the middle name thing too. Your story sounds very cool!

    • @incensive5020
      @incensive5020 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      This makes me think of people basically sending off the name to the God of Death for them to kill, but they never knew the person's middle name (keeping it a secret, or their parents never told them their middle name to keep them safe?) so it ends up killing the wrong person with the same name sans their middle name.

    Hi Kate! First all..... what an incredible premise!!!
    I have a suggestion for keeping track of all those unnamed characters, if you want. Nicknames. Either a physical description of the character, like Big Nose or Freckles or Blue Eyes. Or the main character could think of the people she knows as numbers (i.e. parents are One and Two, best friend is Three, villain is Thirteen). Just a thought...

    • @KateCavanaugh
      @KateCavanaugh  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That's what I've done for other stories when the main character doesn't know their name! That's definitely something to consider and may help me/the reader haha. I'm so curious how I can work the number thing into the story so I'll play around with it, thanks! :)

    For Dialogue Tags, instead of names or a long description of the person, you could assign them to an object that they always carry with them or maybe something about them like a favorite color or song or maybe a type of plant, material, measurement, or place. It would make the identity of the person easier for you to describe and could be kind of interesting.

    • @KateCavanaugh
      @KateCavanaugh  5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Oooh I like the idea of using the objects people are carrying as a descriptor. It could even lead to a funny moment if they don't have the object. :) THANK YOU! :)

    I love that you've built a nameless society! In my setting, everyone is telepathic so noone has names either- they just go by reference terms (how other people could identify them- by physical trait, or personality, or job). I have tons of problems with referring to people in descriptions and to each other- i rely heavily on titles (the ancient shopkeeper, greenstriped toddler) So exciting to watch you start something new- i get joy in your joy!

    I was in the dentist chair yesterday for about two and a half hours so I had plenty of time to daydream. One of the really scummy antagonists from my next story came to me and I was able to plot out the whole critical scene he’s in! It was pretty awesome.

    Title suggestion: Unnamed.
    I don't usually jump around within scenes quite like that. I do sometimes jump around from scene to scene in a completely nonlinear fashion. So I'll have a scene over here, and a scene over there, and no idea what all has to happen to connect them.
    I definitely have ideas that have spun off into a direction I never intended. For example, "this character is secretly Thor" is definitely not what I was thinking when I started one of last year's novelettes, but that's where it ended up.
    Hopin g to join you and Becca tomorrow!

    My first thought when you mentioned your main character killing someone without dying is that she is the God of Death, but has forgotten and lost most of her powers, so there aren't any consequences to killing. And every time she kills it's because she's compelled by people naming names close to her. Now people have stopped dying around most of the world, and there are consequences. Commence the questioning of their entire reality and a quest to reclaim her powers.
    I guess that's probably a completely different story, though, but was a fun idea I had.
    Looking forward to seeing more about your process with this story! :)

    What's in a Name? (..Potential title). It's neat to look back on this video to see where the project started. I feel I can relate because at the beginning, the project is just a jumble of exciting ideas. Also, irrelevant idea I suspect, but at some point I feel like a fake name kind defines the person more than their given name. So I wonder if that happened if the fake name/nickname might hold more intent than the given name.
    I also wonder how names are given in this world. It's a lot of power to give the parents (Kids must behave really well here lol).. maybe only one parent would name, would have to be a unique name too. Don't pray to kill Mary Smith because so many might die.
    Also, hi Kate! I've said it before, you're such an inspiration. Thank you for your videos.

    I started writing my first book four years ago and only just now did I realize that I was writing the second book first. Now, I've set it aside and have started writing the actual first book and already everything makes way more sense. I've got three or four books on my list of to dos and I seem to jump between them quite a bit. Thankfully though, I've begun to set everything up so that is way more organized than it was. I used to write by hand all the time but my parents got me a computer for university and it's been a huge help and I've only been writing things down on paper when I don't have my computer with me or if it's a side idea or story that is completely unrelated to what I'm working on at the moment. I don't even know how many journals I've got now. My older sister sends me a new one every time she goes somewhere and I've got four in the past 2 and 1/2 years. If she keeps it up, I'll have an entire shelf of journals from her by the time I get my first Bachelors!

    Hey Kate! I know this video was a while ago, but if you're still looking for ways to "name" people in a world without names, you might consider the naming system used in Bali. In Bali, there are only FOUR names: Wayan, Made, Nyoman, and Ketut. They translate to: First, Second, Third, and Fourth, respectively. Parents name their first child Wayan, second child Made, and so on. If they have more than four children, they simply start over with Wayan/First! If people are allowed to share their LAST names or a family name in your world, something like this could work. Their "public" name could be "First Cavanaugh" (or make up a word that means "First" in your characters' language, and their true name could be kept secret. Just an idea I wanted to share because I think that's a really interesting real-life naming system! Love your premise and your videos so much!

      I'm loving the characters, magic system, and world so much! But as I said, this project is so different for me because I don't usually write HEAVY magic in my fantasies.
      Lol this was super long, but I loved talking about it vaguely!

      @@KateCavanaugh The town has a legend about a witch that curses people that cross her. Most people claim not to believe it but the fear is strong enough that the town is willing to put people to death for "being witches". The MC is kind of a dick and steals from someone. This un-named person just so happens to be the witch previously mentioned. She curses him and now he is kind of screwed unless you can figure out how to undo the curse before he loses his sanity for good. (It's more Beauty and the Beast) but there are some Rumpelstiltskin-ques character traits thrown in there as well. Just realized how hard it is to spell his name jeez.

    oh this is such a good idea!! ofc the first things that came to mind was “the book thief” and “death note” but i think this plot offers a really good twist! idk if you’re up to taking advice from random people in the internet lol, but instead of using descriptors, you should give them all nicknames (which relates back to the story with your dad’s friend). as a reader, i personally don’t like it when authors use descriptors over and over again (ie, the boy with the red hair; the woman with blue eyes, etc). it could keep it fresh if you gave people certain nicknames that would help identify people without knowing their true birth name!

    This is quite an old video so you probably won't get this comment, but a really cool twist might be that if someone is dying, and you know their name, you can make a request to the god of death to save them, so a reverse of the first rule. This would give people a motivation to share their name with their closest and most trusted, and it might show character development and the building or breaking of trust depending on how you use it.

    Hey, Kate! Great premise! In Romanian old believes we have something similar related to names.
    I'm not sure if it's something across Europe but it'd be worth doing the research.
    As Romanians are creative in avoiding trouble, our myth related to full name disclosure and consequences also has a way around, involving supposed witchcraft. If the one chased by the god of death starts feeling the symptoms especially if they are children, they are "sold" to another soul mother or family under a new name or nickname which would confound the god.
    Very amazing concept! Even if it's something in our mythology i don.t think i.d have thought of using this!
    Looking forward to see what you'll do with this!

    @12:30 - that's because.. some say that stories (of other worlds etc) are not really invented but rather discovered by those who are capable to connect to them. Thus, sometimes it flows smoothly, and some other times you only get glimpses of it.. At least that's what some people believe about stories and their writers.

    12:30 - "does anyone else write like this?" -- yes!
    in fact, i believe it helps terribly with keeping the muse high and managing to bring longer scenes to an end.
    those bits in between (especially when they don't have to be connected by a full-described conversation but can be connected by narration) are, for me, the moments where the voice of the narrator comes in to play. which is always nice, right?
