      Campina Grande Salmon Pink Bird Eater...2nd largest species. I got mine when she was the dime sized and she quickly grew into a beautiful girl. She was easily as heavy as my Goliath with close to the same leg span and lived 14 yrs. As an adult, she would eat only full grown live mice. She was an expert at getting them thru the skull and neck. Probably my favorite species.

    I’ve had a horrible case of arachnophobia my entire life. It got so bad at one point that I would actually faint at the sight of ANY spider 🕷️. That made life miserable, so I began a long process of learning about spiders in hopes that I would at the least get better. I have watched 1,000s of hours of videos made by reputable tarantula hobbyists and scientists. Since then, I can actually stand back and admire these creatures. Programs like yours only help. I don’t care to be surprised by them, and couldn’t be “up close and personal yet “, but I am fascinated now. Who knows what the future may bring? Y’all have a blessed day!

      Start keeping jumping spiders, I was in the same situation and did the same thing then began keeping jumping spiders of all kinds. Now I really don't have a fear of any spiders. I am within 4 feet of about 400 spiders and 1200 within 15 feet because 3 of my female jumpers had several egg sacks hatch this year so I have 1/3rd right next to me in the room I'm in now and the rest in the room I sleep in next door. I absolutely love jumping spiders now and have about a dozen other species I plan to get once we move to our new house. I want to get a few huntsman spiders, 2 six eyed sand spiders, a bunch of velvet spiders, and there are several tarantula species I want to get as well.

      Yeah dude I’d love to see your reaction to herping out there! Snakes are a bit tougher to come by, but just being immersed in the biodiversity is incredible. You and Nick would love the cloud forest, dry forest is hit or miss. Cerro Blanco (where we saw these tarantulas) is pretty good, just gotta get a good tour guide and a little bit of luck. One of our outings here a different tour group came across one of the Ecuadorian coral snakes. We didn’t get to see it unfortunately but just goes to show how fleeting the encounters are!

    • @Exquailibur
      @Exquailibur 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Pamphobeteus species are actually widely available now, its only the males that display the color usually but the females are a rather large spider. Pamphobeteus are some of the largest tarantulas in the world actually, being comparable to a bird eater in size.
      They are among the easiest tarantulas to breed and keep as they have great appetites, the females are massive and the males display amazing colors so its quite a nice species.

    Dude, that is a *gorgeous* spider. Hopefully the hobby world lets these guys do their thing in the wild. It’s one thing to breed captive specimens. It’s a completely different matter when a rare, valuable tarantula gets hunted in the wild…which we’ve often seen in the past. Granted, things have gotten better in recent years. This might be an interesting case where, if the males are colorful and pretty, they eventually become more sought after than females…which is usually the opposite since females get larger and live longer lives. Always stoked to find out about a cool new tarantula species…always a little apprehensive about their fate upon being discovered.

    I love your channel and especially your message! My grandfather does a lot of work with turtles in this area. He's a naturalist by nature, so all of his time is spent either in the swamps or at home thinking and writing about them -- whether it's to better track the species or to follow how human interaction negatively impacts them -- and one of his more frequent refrains is "Take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints".
    I very much support this ideology, which, it seems, so many people claiming to be animal supporters so readily neglect. I can tell just from how you handle different species, though, and how you discuss them, that you're in it for the correct reasons. I applaud you for this! Truly!
    You have a growing platform, so your message is a very uplifting one to see. Conservation is everything and I love how you keep the animals and their habitat first in your mind! Major, major respect to you!

    • @MyWildBackyard
      @MyWildBackyard  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much! And props to your grandfather for doing such important work! Literally, I believe the conservation of our planet’s natural resources is the biggest problem we face in our lifetime, because it and climate change are intertwined. And sure, picking spiders up for videos stresses them out and is a bit more invasive than the “take nothing but pictures, leave nothing but footprints” adage, but I think in order for people to care with the animals, they have to connect with them. And to best connect with them, they have to see someone else doing it to set the example. If I’m respectful and knowledgeable on camera, they’ll see these animals as something to appreciate, not some disembodied life form in a hands-off documentary. It’s all part of the mission!

    • @rickycouture7224
      @rickycouture7224 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MyWildBackyard I completely agree! It's sort of a conundrum, because while you preach conservation you do have to show people why these animals are important, and there's no better way of doing so than to meet them on a personal level -- respectfully and with care.
      My grandfather has built up a sort of cult following locally as the "turtle man", but really he's a conservationist at heart. What people view as this weird obsession is him showing his true passion for conservation. That is the mission, especially as we lose more and more land to human development.
      His name (my grandfather) is David Carroll and he's 81 years old. He's seen turtle habitat decline bit by bit over a long period of time, so it's so excellent to see someone like yourself, who is young and who does carry the message to heart.
      You are an excellent ambassador for these animals and I just want to say thank you, truly, for not only handling them with care but for educating people on why you do the things that you do! It makes such a difference in people's minds, and that's something you should be extremely proud of!

    Tarantulas have retractable claws on the tip of each leg, that’s both arboreal, terrestrial, and fossorial. They’re fascinating. Also the Ecuadorean gold you picked up was a male due to the tibial hooks and the “boxing gloves” pedipalps. Love your content.

    Amazing! Congratulations for finding one! I’ve been waiting for this, since you’ve been teasing us with it.
    That guy is stunning. The purple color is so vivid. It’s really amazing how many huge tarantulas are living in that environment. I wonder how many species there are that haven’t been seen or classified yet.
    Anyway, fantastic video! What a great experience you’ve had there - thanks for sharing it with us!

      Glad to share! Had to tease it for sure, it was kind of a wild goose chase for us as well! Literally every location after the cloud forest we were hoping to see these guys, to no avail until Juan helped us out. In South America, I wouldn’t be surprised if over half the things we saw weren’t described, or at any rate weren’t fully taxonomically reviewed. So much biodiversity, and so few resources to properly study it. Truly a world full of secrets.

    20 thumbs up. Spencer you’re the best. I have no doubt now. The thing that makes you this. Is your friends. The people you know. They are smart, they are great on camera. You are blessed with knowledge, but also with your ability to have people around you that are as knowledgeable or more. That’s unique. A lot of the biologists are egotistical. You know who and where. That makes you special. Love you bud. This was a culmination of like 3, 4 videos. And you got to hold her. The gem of the jungle. Just amazing brother. So glad you share this with us.❤

      You’re right though! I’m far from the best hunter on any of these expeditions. I’m much more of a storyteller. The wildlife brothers and I were actually talking about this on this hike! I do my best to surround myself with people who can help me find the animals, and I do my best to include them in the story that I’ll tell about the animals when we get them. Teamwork is the way we all succeed!

    Great video! I've really been enjoying your content.
    Just a heads-up for ya Spencer, there are people in the tarantula husbandry community breeding several of the Pamphobeteus species, and you're absolutely right about the males being the brightly colored ones. The sexual dimorphism regarding the purple coloration seems to be fairly consistent throughout the genus. Females generally have that sort of starburst crown of darker purple on a black body, while the mature males have lots more purple and brighter.

    • @MyWildBackyard
      @MyWildBackyard  ปีที่แล้ว

      Do we know why they have it? Tarantulas aren’t known for their vision so I’m surprised to see this sort of dimorphism in spiders!

    • @ethanatkiss2743
      @ethanatkiss2743 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MyWildBackyard I don't think there's a definitive answer, but I'm thinking it's just natural selection. The mature males have to roam around and look for females, so a bit of bright coloration serves as a warning to would-be predators. The more colorful ones tended to survive cuz they look scarier and here we are a few million generations later with bright metallic purple spiders.
