When you see all of those scurrying around, what you are seeing is sexually mature males. Upon reaching their ultimate molt they will leave the safety of their burrows to try and find a mate or two before time kills them (females live MUCH longer than males). Often times males in that condition are singularly minded. They want to breed and that's about it, so they aren't really too concerned about food, water, or their own safety. They aren't evil manhunters in the first place but these males are probably even less likely to be defensive when encountering a human. Invade a big female's burrow and things might be a little different.

The Red-headed Centipede is a dream species for all of us bug nerds, and to see 3 and catch 2 is absolutely unreal. I brushed him off back into the water then saved him with a large strainer then put him in a empty 5 gallon pail... showed my friend took some pictures and let him go in a dry area... it was a good 7 inches long really cool to see... and 3ft from that spot only inside the Garage was a Very Large Black Widow that would come out every night... I lived in central Louisiana on the edge of the Kisatchie National Forest back in the 1980s, and we found this species of centipede(as well as tarantulas and scorpions) in and around our house and barn fairly often. My friends who still live there say they don't see them much anymore, so maybe they are becoming less common. And, that is a unique area in Louisiana. There are virtually no other rocky cliffs and hills like that in the state. It's fascinating to just walk around thru there and see the wildlife. Recently, we've seen larger mammals, including bears and cougars/mountain lions, even though the Louisiana Dept. of Wildlife and Fisheries says they don't exist in this part of the state. They do, and I think they are becoming MORE common., because we didn't see them years ago.

We had those in west Texas where I grew up. They were quite common. Locally called the "Sonoran" centipede. Same thing. Leave them alone!
Scorpions were very common, but they didn't concern me any more than wasps.
Tarantulas were also very common and not a concern. They would jump in our swimming pool at night if we had the lights on in the pool. 🤷‍♂
But those centipedes will send you right to the hospital! I never heard of anyone dying from the venom but it is so excruciatingly painful you'll be begging for anesthesia.
That crazy guy who lets animals/insects bite him and sting him, "Coyote Petersen", got bit by one of these and it was the only time he went to the hospital.

Several, perhaps 5, years ago, I found a dead Giant Red Headed Centipede in an enclosure I used for exercising my horses. He had to be at or just greater than 12 inches long. Unfortunately, I think my horse stepped on him. It was the only wild one I had ever seen and it was massive.
Those things are one of the largest globally. I wished you had expounded upon the venom so we understood what it's made of, how it works, and what it does to the body. I live in extreme NW Arkansas almost at the MO border on 25 acres with a large hill in the middle.and about 2/3 is wooded. Consequently, I have seen several roaming male chocolate brown tarantulas (that's what I know them as) around my home. One even got inside and I let him out to find his mate.

I did see several that were bigger, but they were not in a position to actually get them in my GLASS container. Also if you’re interested in making more centipede videos, house centipedes are really neat. They’re the only order of centipede afaik that kept their compound eyes, and they also have prehensile legs for gripping prey since they don’t have as robust claws and legs like other centipedes. No idea where to find em tho except for inviting them into your home

In New Mexico i witnessed a migration of thousands of tarantulas across a roadway when a spring storm blew in. It reminded me of a horror movie. The road was completely covered with them. I was learning to drive at the time. I opened my door to look at one and I had one rush at the open door with its legs up. I screamed. That memory is something I'll never forget.

My ex-husband's Mother is a former Zoologist whose main field of study was primate studies, although she is well-versed in multitudes of subjects in the natural scientific fields. I appreciate the passions of those who are knowledgeable about various species of animals, reptiles, arachnids, plants, and other life in our world. I am a 51-year-old Jill of many trades, a Navy Veteran, and a Mom to two young adult sons. I love biology, art, architecture, history, science, and my newest hobby, botany, I love learning, reading, and researching a variety of subjects. I do my best to maintain and keep the forest that had existed long before our houses were built in Grovetown, GA completely natural. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the world. Stay safe, healthy, hydrated, get some sleep, and take care of yourselves.

Being stationed at Ft. Polk in the late 80s, I did a lot of time out in the field. I remember seeing plenty of centipedes, but don't remember one being that large. We also saw tarantulas a lot as well. It wasn't unusual for guys to wake up with hands, arms, etc. swollen from some kind of bite happening during the night. I always wondered what it was. Maybe these centipedes were the culprits sometimes.

Come to Austin, TX in the summer and you will find lots of those red-headed centipedes. The damned things even find a way into our houses. We keep a special mechanic's grappler to catch them. When the try to bite the metal shaft, you can feel it throughout the hand and wrist. I hate those damned things when in my house.

the spiders are impressive, and the scorpions we have here are tiny and cute and quite frankly very well mannered - even playful. but if you think a centipede large enough to fit into tupperware is big you should come to hawaii... and bring a garbage can if you want to catch centipedes.

  • @garymaidman625

The tarantula isn't a 'true spider', which is a misconception because people think it's not a spider, it is a spider, a proper spider. Spiders are generally split into two types, mygalomorphs and araneomorphs. Mygalomorphs are the more archaic types of spiders and are distinguished, amongst other features, by their fangs which are parallel dagger-like fangs (one of the reasons they rear back to strike, think the Sydney funnel web spider), as opposed to araneomorphs, which have pincer-like fangs. Also, centipedes don't have fangs, so they don't bite, the venom comes from a modified pair of legs, so it's a sting, not a bite.

The "Forty Leg" of Jamaica (apparently the same as the Amazonian Giant centipede) is probably the freakiest creature I've encountered. Every bit of 12 inches if not more and a powerful venom to match its size. Luckily I did not experience that part and only heard anecdotes but I've watched them carefully a few times and you could see it working things out in its little centipede mind and I wouldn't say sinister, but outside of humans that might be as close to sinister as may exist. I am sure I'll find it on the channel.

    • @chriswhinery925

Don't attribute more emotion or malice to the things than they really have. Yes they're big, yes they're creepy, yes they have venom that probably won't kill you but might make you wish it would. But at the end of the day they're still just bugs. They have extremely primitive brains, they don't work things out in their minds, they operate 100% on instinct.

Make special tweezers to catch them, ten inch long tweezers with a silicone dapped on the ends so that there is a gapped once closed / tweezers with a gap, so that it does not kill them when tweezered together
