It's amazing how a Manga started a craze for kids to play Go and I agree I'm western and I really want to play go just by reading the Manga and watching the Anime :D
+Kakashi - Leonhart Now AlphaGo is inspiring a new wave of kids (and adults) to check out the game too! During the AlphaGo vs Lee Sedol Google Challenge match the number of Google searches for "Game of Go" and such went through the roof! We live in interesting times!!!!
Remember when I was in sixth grade and fell in love with Hikaru No Go. I begged my mom for Go boards and go classes but she never let me. Honestly, I still wish to this day that I could've gone to those classes.
Ah, I love Hikaru no Go. I actually bought a Go book and a goban after watching the series. Learned the mechanics but not the techniques. Like bridge, easy to learn the mechanics of the game but not the gameplay. But the anime and manga are great!
Because part of Touya Akira's super-human Go power comes from his awesome haircut. He also gets an extra boost from his pink shirts and cardigan sweaters. ;-D
Entertainment is part of culture. The environment greatly affects a person and the thinking of the public. One of which is like a manga and an anime. Since kids or some young adults don't get exactly have a trip around the country or even entering into groups, forums and such, their environment is school, home and family and friends. In home, they do what they want like watching TV since that's like fun also. Continuation below o.o
If Go was made known as Igo in America (to avoid confusion on Go equipment sites), they produced more sets, they popularize it with Hikaru no Go, they have actual televised tournaments (or TH-cam tournaments), and if much more Igo clubs were formed at schools nationwide, then perhaps my local Borders wouldn't have one book on Go as opposed to shelves upon shelves of @#$^%^ CHESS BOOKS!!!! ...Oh, and I suppose Go would be more popular in the U.S. too, I guess...
Chess and Go have a 'different spirit' in their following which makes this moot. Go players generally feel that each individual game is irrelevant - that the spirit of playing Go is to improve one's game, not just to win. By contrast chess is a game of Kings. Individual matches are have no value beyond that round. Put another way, when I lose in Go, I analyze my game and feel good that I improved. Chess, i just feel like I lost. Any reason to play Go is a good one - not an insult. -AHMAD
I have seen Japanese kids in Finland and they're cute even they don't speak Japanese or english cause they'd come to here so young that they learned very quickly our language.. but original Japanese kids are very cute too!! ^___^ good job!!
i like playing Go but i'm very good at it because i have not come across other people (other than the internet) that play it and i have to teach myself, i looked up on google before to see if there was anyplace i can learn to play anywhere near where i live but there was nothing that i could find. it's not very well known in canada. and it's harder for me to learn thing's unless someone is there to help and explain things. i started wanting to play once i read and watched 'Hikaru no Go' vary awesome anime and manga.
+DopeDo no one play go in my town so once i learned all rules i am going to start up small Go club at town library see if anyone like to learn and play
Since the simplicity of the rules draws the player into the complexity of the vast Go board's possibilities this would at once be remedial, in ways, to at least many learning disabilities, as well as being a positive cultivation tool for all children. Hence Go should be introduced as an activity in the North American School system, eh/huh, donchya think?
Currently reading this manga through..I had read about 1 volume's worth back in 2003-2004 when they were publishing chapters on the American Shonen Jump releases but I had never read past that..Not sure how long they ran that manga for in the U.S. Shonen Jumps but my parents stopped buying it for me at the time (i was 9-10) so never followed through with it
It's how they get interested and now they play such as Go. It's good so they can experience different things. It's not everyday you get to ask "Maybe I should try doing this?" If you happen to ask yourself that, something must have piped your interest. It is a reason that people play because it was a TV because they ask, "Hey, let's give it a shot." Just like how children have hanged themselves when Sadam Husei was hanged. Er.
haha...not only in go...but Prince of Tennis influence over 30 or 300 thousands people to play tennis (yes the intervoult between 30 and 300 thousand is a lot..but i forgot the number...) so my point is...a great manga of anything (wheather it's go or tennis) can influence a lot of pplz to play that game
I watched the entire Hikaru no Go anime and by the end of the series I still had no idea how this game even works. Even now I still don't have a clue as to how the game is played.
There's lots of online resources to play Go: gokgs iis an online game server for free. So is pandanet which is the one shown in the tv show. I can't give you the addresses via youtube, but you can serch online for internet Go. Also, there's a newsgroup rec.games.go.
I like the way Yumi Hotta write this story and also Takeshi Obata drawing too :) although he draw so lots of story now, I prefer the way he draw in HNG XD I wish Hotta sensei will write some sort of this story more, I like it T.T
Uh....Yogioh, bey blades are all CREATED for lil kids to play. Go has been around for about 2000 years, and has been a respected profession in Asia and is known as the most complicated board game around the world. They just wanted more kids to get involved cuz its a the best way to develop good players.
you can play online on gokgs(dot)com - most of the players there made the effort to learn it themselves :) and there are a lot of clubs all over EU/US nowadays so you probably can find a club to go to
I'm not that great at Go...only a 22k according to KGS, which I doubt is accurate calculating ranks in the first place. Still, I love to play and learn, even if I haven't improved much during the 4 years I've been playing on and off.
*smile* Me to ^^ I started to lern this game, because I read the manga. It's an interesting game, though I am not verry good at it untill now. And there is noone I could play with. (But...now I found a nice place on the net ^^ Gambatie Imas! ^-^) Go is realy interesting.
And what are your approved methods for learning about new things and gaining new interests? I think most parents would rather see their kids go from TV to a board game than vice versa...or from TV or video game to any real-world activity.
Alright first of all Go is Easy.,Its mastering it thats Hard.also there are many go servers only in which you can learn and play. The most user friendly one Bieng the KGS Server.Try it out.i looks forward for many new Players. And oh My name is Zangetsu1 there and im a 4k at the moment. If you want maybe i can give some of you guys a teaching game sometime.
Actually, dear, I stumbled on this looking to see episodes of Hikaru no Go. It had gotten me interested in Go to begin with, like this news article talks about, so I wouldn't really say this snippet "educated" me. By the way, dumb means the same thing as stupid, or it is a derogatory term for a mute person. Review your vocabulary before you make inflammatory remarks.
isnt Yukari the person who supervised the games to make sure they were accurately shown at the players levels later on in the manga series? I dunno, cus america only has it up to volume 9 so far, even though I've read the rest.
@windwarrior0123 I was actually able to start a pretty successful Go Club at my school. It's about 20 people strong. Most didn't know how to play before joining though. But it's still fun. =)
That girl is so cute and pretty.. She's my type.. Caster mentioned her name Yukari Umezawa or whatever.. not sure... Anyway Hikaru no go is cool manga..
The power of manga.
Ulquiorra Cifer No...
The power of LOVE !!! ;D
+Ulquiorra Cifer , and now AlphaGo will bring a new wave of players to the game.
@@SighrisSargon You really really nailed it
Now we need a Manga that inspires kids to put down their phones and go outside.

Just hearing the into of hikaru no go rally just hits my heart and makes me wanna break down

Well alpha go revived it and then a chinese version of the drama came out last year and its actually decent
Dang that 9 year old is now in his 20's

Dude Hikaru no go is the reason I wanna play go
Whenever I see old traditions being invigorated for fun and learning I smile.
i think the Go game is a good refreshment from the chess we are so used to. its an awesome game. the manga/anime hikaru no go is also great.

Same here. I live in Canada and there isn't anyone in my province that plays except in the capital which is only a handful.
