  • James May has officially made his worst sandwich yet. This week he tries the awful combination of banana and mayonnaise. It was so bad it made Lucy sick and James actually described it as disgusting. Don't try it. Trust us.

Mayo usually works well spread on the _outsides_ of a grilled sandwich -- I think James would call it a "toastie" in the UK. It crisps up nicely without tasting like mayo. Keep the banana batons inside with some peanut butter, maybe a sprinkle of ground nutmeg, cloves, & cinnamon, then toast it in a pan until crisp on the outside and the PB is melty inside.

There’s an open faced sandwich I’ve liked since my grandfather made it for me as a child: toasted sandwich bread, tinned herring or sardines layered out on the bread, drizzled with ketchup and covered with sharp cheddar cheese. Run it under a broiler for a few minutes. Smokey, fishy, tangy and sweet all at once. Delicious....and disgusting to everyone in my family but me.
Tomato and mayonnaise sandwiches I can get into, especially with a little sweet onion added on, but banana and mayo, no thank you.

A banana sandwich like this is typically a Southern US thing. I have never been a big fan of it, but I would suggest not putting butter on it and using Duke's Mayo instead to make it a bit better.

    • @n7565j

  • @wylmccaul5072

I’m assuming that recommendation was from the Southern US. It’s vile, no doubt. A thing that seems to escape you is that we don’t put butter on every bleeding sandwich. Not likely that it would make this one worse, (how could you) but it may affect other suggestions you get from the US and perhaps elsewhere. Cheers.

James May is disgustingly under rated. Entertainment characters are a large part of our modern culture, if he cares to be or not - he is one. James May has been a part of many peoples lives and experiences vicariously. I hope he's humble enough at this point to recognize the fact that he has, indeed, brought joy and time spent worth while, to his viewers and fan base. I doubt he'll ever read this, but Bravo and thank you Doctor Captian slow.
P.s. I am a music man myself, having studied audio engineering/music production. I would love to see the world of music through your ears, Please try to make that happen, if at all possible. Thanks again for your work.

I'm with Lucy here, I don't like bananas (largely the texture) or mayonaise (don't mind it as an ingredient but as a taste on it's own I find it repellent) so the mere thought of this sandwich gives me the dry boak, and the fact that even James says it's horrible and he'll eat pretty much anything tells you the story.

I mentioned once in a previous video about the mashed potato sandwiches my dad used to have. He'd keep the mash from the night before in the saucepan, then make toast under the grill. If he was feeling especially fancy he'd grill some chunks of corned beef in with the toast and mash.
I can't comment on the taste myself as I've never tried it, but my dad always served it with a thick mug of tea and with especially thick slices of bread (usually uncut loaves). He really enjoyed them.

I think the most unusual sandwich thing I've made was a bacon, egg, and cheese sandwich on a croissant with a smear of jam. Buttered and toasted croissant, of course, because who doesn't like more butter and toasty breadstuffs. But combining savory, salty, and sweet are pretty classic combinations. I think I found that I preferred something like an apricot jelly or fig spread. Something with a fairly mild flavor. Grape does work, but it tends to overwhelm the balance of flavors if you put too much on. If you do want to be a bit more serious with your jam application, then you'll want to break out some breakfast sausage patties for your meat instead of bacon, as they carry more of a savory punch and can hold up to it better. It's been a while since I made this, so maybe I'll have to give it another go sometime. I'd be willing to hazard a guess that "cowboy candy", otherwise known as candied jalapeno slices, would be an interesting substitution if you wanted to replace the jam and also add a bit of spice to the flavor profile as well.
