Gorebyss and Beautifly seem to be an example of convergent evolution, both are very different organisms but they have a similar niche in the ecosystem, as both are pretty-looking Pokémon with bright colors and a frail, dainty appearance that hides their true nature as vicious predators that stab their prey and suck it dry.

I love this thing! The whole Evolution line makes a lot more sense when you think of Clamperl as being a fish egg, ready to hatch into one of two eel-like specimens. Huntail’s adorable, and THIS thing is captivating yet terrifying. It’s a swimming syringe!
They were always bypassed by me because no npc’s use them and I didn’t knew Clamperl could evolve… But I would say that gorebeyss could very much be an unplanned prevolution to Milotic
ZU needs to become an official tier already. There's so many Untiered pokemon it makes no sense to not make a new tier for all of them, that's a whole new competitive meta for people to play with just waiting to be exploited.
Smogon needs to redesign their whole competitive scene in all honesty its not working and the more pokemon added the worse it gets. Adding more tiers only prolongs the issues of the format say they do add ZU well some pokemon wont make the cut and go to untiered anyway just like what happened with PU. Hecks complex banning from gen 5 shows how toxic it has gotten. And their obsession with each gen having all the pokemon is also showing its problems to their system. Allowing mythical pokemon was also not a healthy idea as deoxys, keldeo, jirachi, mew, etc have shown how warping they are.
@@hockeycrafter6086 I think the cutoffs should be decreased (i.e. lower % of usage) and there should perhaps be a voting stage for Pokemon who come very close to this cutoff. I’ve noticed that the banlists have become increasingly massive, partially because of how volatile usage stats can be and partially, maybe, because Smogon has gotten increasingly more ban-happy, changing their philosophy from getting rid of what makes the game unplayable to getting rid of things selectively to make it more competitive. Or in another sense, before it was about getting rid of things when there’s a good reason that it’s bad, but now it’s getting rid of things if there’s no reason why it’s good [good meaning healthy]. That’s just my impression from looking through usage stats and whatnot, and some of the recent bans + arguments in favour of those bans, I wouldn’t claim to be an expert on this.

Given the fact that to get one in Gen 3, you have to use Dive on the Abadoned Ship, get the Scanner, then go to Slateport and trade it for a CHOICE between a Deepseatooth or a Deepseascale, you can only pick one, you can never get the other, and the one you get is the only one available. And you still have to trade Clamperl holding one. I guess it's not AS convoluted as finding a Feebas in route 119, but still too much trouble for two Pokémon not even that good.
Agreed. I love Huntail's design and have always wanted to run one in campaign, but it's such a pain to get into the Clamperl line. I'm better off just running Clamperl with Eviolite at that point.
Nah, it doesn't work like that. First, you do video about one member, Second, you do video about some random pokemon, that nobody asked for, OR you make a video about Mon from the comments, and Third you spin a 50/50 wheel to decide if you finish the trio, duo etc. or do a step two, repeat until you finish the trio duo etc.

Fun fact, Clamperl has one of the most unique histories of any Pokemon in competitive. The damn thing is viable, albeit highly niche and gimmicky, in Gen 3 and Gen 4 UU, thanks to Deep Sea Tooth giving it more unboosted Special Attack than Deoxys-A. In Gen 5 LC they had to ban Deep Sea Tooth entirely because Clamperl reached a whopping 68 Special Attack and 22 speed off a single Shell Smash at level 5 (by comparison one of the best Little Cup Pokemon is Abra, who has had to be suspect tested many times, and it caps at 22 SpAtk and 19 speed, which it will never have both of due to natures). Somehow a monstrously powerful glass cannon is a freaking clam, an animal that stands as a literal symbol of defense.
Yeah, and it's funny that Huntail and Gorebyss only have Shell Smash because of their pre-evolution. From a design standpoint, Shell Smash only makes sense on Pokémon that have shells, which only Clamperl does in this evolution line.
I always saw Gorebyss as Milotic's little sister due to having similar designs and offensive movepools. For all the trouble RSE made it to get them, you'd think Gorebyss and Huntail would be incredible mons. Dual stab and physical offensive options would massively improved Gorebyss. I always found Huntail more useful due to the fact it's movepool can account for both types of offense. We have yet to see BDSP's meta develop to it's fullest potential but it's likely Gorebyss will be a NU superstar once again if the conditions are right.

I remember running amnesia, iron defense, and aqua ring to baton pass to Talonflame to piss people off. It was a terrible strategy and easily countered but was often enough to summon rage quits from people who didn’t have taunt or dragon tail. My first video on TH-cam was about this “strategy”, actually.

I feel like goreybyss and huntail are two of the rarest Pokémon in game. I have never had a goreybyss and only one huntail and I’ve been playing since gen 3. You also never even see them on in game enemy teams.
I thought in gen 5, it also had some presence as a smash passer in Ubers. I remember it as having the wild distinction of being viable and legal in every tier that generation, while it's strategy would differ depending on which mechanics it used were legal in which tier. Definitely one of the more interesting Pokémon on the competitive scene out there.

I love when elegant looking pokemon are good. As the gens go on the top tiers are becoming more and more dominated by hideous monstrosities. Things took a turn when Milotic started getting way worse.

Gorebyss does not look like it has 105 defense and 52 speed, if anything, it feels like the stats are reversed. Also, why is it a Clamperl evolution instead of Luvdisc?
i wonder if increases it's base speed to 60 would shatter its issues. Gorebyss is still a solid pokemon and has great range... maybe give is grass knot?
I Really want to see the following gen 3 pokemons: Zangoose Torkoal Tropius. I'm especially interested in Torkoal who has some interesting trick room shenanigans.
I remember having a Gen 5, Gorebyss Smash Pass team with Nidoking and Toxic Orb Facade Breloom as the recipients, as their type synergies were great with Gorebyss and both refused to be bothered by status. It wrecked the OU ladder.
Baton pass pretty much ruins singles if it's not banned. This just kinda reinforces my theory that the game is balanced around playing VGC rather than playing 6v6 singles (but then, dynamax is still arguably broken in VGC)
My first badge in competitive pokemon in Brazil was from an UU tournament. I swept my opponents by baton passing Gorebyss' shell smashes to either Nidoking or Sawsbuck. Good times.
@@skeetermania3202 In that tournament, nobody had an answer. Sucker punch Absol was a theoretical threat to the sweep but the one time a saw one, I passed the boosts to sawsbuck. It's nature power turns into earthquake but isn't considered an offensive move, so it bypasses sucker punch.
I thought it's name was based on the words 'gore' and 'abyss'. I don't know why, but when I saw it's design and name for the first time, I immediately thought 'this thing is some kind of horrible monster, right'. Read the pokedex entry and was proven right.

they are different enough to warrant sperate videos. Gorebyss is almost exclusively a special attacker while Huntail is more of a physical/mixed attacker.
@@megamegasaur And sirens are a type of mermaid... an EVIL kind of mermaid. though, their forms have varied from story to story... in most cases their usually portrayed as being half fish and half women, but there are variants that are/have been known to be part bird and part women instead. in THIS particular case... they probably CANT really be a type of mermaid. But the reality of sirens is... their actually evil deceitful spirits that tend to take the form of mermaid like beings. but being spirits... this COULD explain why their are bird variants of sirens. Either way... sirens are usually mermaid like, which is why they can be referred to a kind of evil mermaid. Although Primarina is in fact more like a seel in the top half, it IS more mermaid like in design. but even if Primarina WASN'T based off of an actual mermaid.... it STILL possess that aesthetic look hella LOT more than Gorebyss does. Your statement of WHY Primarina isn't a mermaid falls flat, because even if it isn't.. Gorebyss isn't one either.

It's very obvious that GameFreak doesn't really care about balance when they add moves like Shell Smash, and then add moves like Geomancy to the table. it's like Dragon Ball with these guys, the only way to correct power creep, is apparently with worse power creep
You cant blame Gamefreak for Gorebyss being untiered. It has the tools to be strong. It is the community that is holding it back with its ban on Baton pass.
I can’t be the only one who thinks this Pokémon has one of the most odd designs? Something about is just rubs me the wrong way. It feels so empty. Bruxish is ugly as heck but at lea that’s the entire point. Dragonair’s design is just as simple if not more simple, but I like it 1000x better. Dunsparce is even more odd but I love it to death.
It isn't a fish! It's a mollusk, the muscle of the clam stretched out and became streamlined for swimming and you can still see the shell on its chest like a little mermaid bikini top! Change my mind.
Gorebyss can be a terror in the battle tower of emerald, specially against physical attackers. It will setup raindance, then hydropump hits like a truck and it is quite bulky, it will need at least three physical hits before dying.
This video is an odd yet great example of the problem with Water Types. There's so many that its really hard to be unique in your own way. Gorebyss is a mid tier pokemon, Shell Smash, Okay movepool. Has the tools but due to the sheer amount of Water Types, There's almost always something better then it because several other water types also have the same tools. I feel like the only way for Waters to stand out nowadays is obscene stats or gimmicks like Toxepex or Barraskewda.
GF could have made it Water/Psychic or Water/Fairy when gen 6 rolled around, but they chose not to. A secondary typing wouldn't have fixed all of its flaws, but STAB coverage of some variety would have helped its role as a sweeper. I feel like Fairy giving it Draining Kiss at least would make sense given its pointy mouth.
Gorebyss didn't gain the fairy-type since it was based on a snipe eel (a type of fish). There is nothing about it that screams fairy-type apart from it being pink. Having draining kiss in its learnset makes sense though since its entries mention it draining other beings of their energy, but that's it.
What I would do is use Pelipper to set up rain then switch into a pokemon like a half health ferrothorn with a rindo berry gorbyss with some defensive investment to tank a grass type attack and boost up with shell smash allowing me to start wrecking havok with high powered attacks using.
Fun fact: Gen 3 UU, Gen 4 UU, Gen 5 RU, Gen 6 NU, Gen 7 PU are the best metagames of all time and OU stinks. AND REMEMBER: UU: UberUbers RU: Really Ubers NU: National Ubers PU: Peak of Ubers ZU: Dragon Ball ZUbers Untiered: You're so damn op that they've banned you so that you preserve Landorus-T's and Toxapex's feelings.

everytime a pokemon drops to untiered at the end of these episodes I get really sad, especially if had a few really good generations before the drop.

Gorebyss's combo of Shell Smash/Baton Pass is literally the equivalent of the Smash or Pass meme.

I love when elegant looking pokemon are good. As the gens go on the top tiers are becoming more and more dominated by hideous monstrosities. Things took a turn when Milotic started getting way worse.

Well, Clefable is an example of a top tier Mon that isn't a monstrosity, it's cute yet it causes so much pain.
Gorebyss being aggressive makes sense since it's name start with the word “Gore”.
I find the concept of this Pokémon using shell smash very funny since it's only shells are, well you know where.

What? Water-Rock is an awful defensive type combination. Solid Rock looks like a good ability, but not the type pairing itself.

Gorebyss does not look like it has 105 defense and 52 speed, if anything, it feels like the stats are reversed.
Also, why is it a Clamperl evolution instead of Luvdisc?
i wonder if increases it's base speed to 60 would shatter its issues.
Gorebyss is still a solid pokemon and has great range... maybe give is grass knot?
Could easily cut 10 attack and give that to speed. Base 124 speed in rain would help a lot.

Tropius.
I'm especially interested in Torkoal who has some interesting trick room shenanigans.
Torkoal could take awhile with gen 7 and 8 VGC where it's been great

I remember having a Gen 5, Gorebyss Smash Pass team with Nidoking and Toxic Orb Facade Breloom as the recipients, as their type synergies were great with Gorebyss and both refused to be bothered by status.
It wrecked the OU ladder.
Baton pass pretty much ruins singles if it's not banned. This just kinda reinforces my theory that the game is balanced around playing VGC rather than playing 6v6 singles (but then, dynamax is still arguably broken in VGC)
WeedleTwineedle convinced me that Shell Smash Deep See Tooth Clamperl is more fun that Gorebyss.
My first badge in competitive pokemon in Brazil was from an UU tournament. I swept my opponents by baton passing Gorebyss' shell smashes to either Nidoking or Sawsbuck. Good times.

@@skeetermania3202 In that tournament, nobody had an answer. Sucker punch Absol was a theoretical threat to the sweep but the one time a saw one, I passed the boosts to sawsbuck. It's nature power turns into earthquake but isn't considered an offensive move, so it bypasses sucker punch.

I thought it's name was based on the words 'gore' and 'abyss'. I don't know why, but when I saw it's design and name for the first time, I immediately thought 'this thing is some kind of horrible monster, right'. Read the pokedex entry and was proven right.

No. Go through his videos; he rarely ever does that, usually only when two Pokémon kind of play alike and have little to cover for both.
they are different enough to warrant sperate videos. Gorebyss is almost exclusively a special attacker while Huntail is more of a physical/mixed attacker.

But the reality of sirens is... their actually evil deceitful spirits that tend to take the form of mermaid like beings. but being spirits... this COULD explain why their are bird variants of sirens.
Either way... sirens are usually mermaid like, which is why they can be referred to a kind of evil mermaid.
Although Primarina is in fact more like a seel in the top half, it IS more mermaid like in design. but even if Primarina WASN'T based off of an actual mermaid.... it STILL possess that aesthetic look hella LOT more than Gorebyss does.
Your statement of WHY Primarina isn't a mermaid falls flat, because even if it isn't.. Gorebyss isn't one either.

It's very obvious that GameFreak doesn't really care about balance when they add moves like Shell Smash, and then add moves like Geomancy to the table. it's like Dragon Ball with these guys, the only way to correct power creep, is apparently with worse power creep
You cant blame Gamefreak for Gorebyss being untiered. It has the tools to be strong. It is the community that is holding it back with its ban on Baton pass.

I have NEVER heard "Gorgeous." I heard "Gore Abyss" which is much more apt.
A Mega Evoution with Psychic typing and Magic Bounce (which could be wicked with Smash Pass) could help it to make it shine again

I can’t be the only one who thinks this Pokémon has one of the most odd designs? Something about is just rubs me the wrong way. It feels so empty. Bruxish is ugly as heck but at lea that’s the entire point. Dragonair’s design is just as simple if not more simple, but I like it 1000x better. Dunsparce is even more odd but I love it to death.
So basically, Gorebyss is only bad because the folks at Smogon didn't want it to be good, so they banned it's greatest trick.
Someone really needs to do something about the bots spamming replies to every comment on this channel. Including this one before long, no doubt.

Gorebyss can be a terror in the battle tower of emerald, specially against physical attackers. It will setup raindance, then hydropump hits like a truck and it is quite bulky, it will need at least three physical hits before dying.

This video is an odd yet great example of the problem with Water Types. There's so many that its really hard to be unique in your own way.
Gorebyss is a mid tier pokemon, Shell Smash, Okay movepool. Has the tools but due to the sheer amount of Water Types, There's almost always something better then it because several other water types also have the same tools.
I feel like the only way for Waters to stand out nowadays is obscene stats or gimmicks like Toxepex or Barraskewda.
For the longest time I thought Gorebyss was a Water/Psychic and Huntail was a Water/Dark type. But no. They;re both mono-water lol

I was looking at their entries and seeing they gave any stat boost to clamperl. I thought, why the hell don't they work for its evolutions?

GF could have made it Water/Psychic or Water/Fairy when gen 6 rolled around, but they chose not to. A secondary typing wouldn't have fixed all of its flaws, but STAB coverage of some variety would have helped its role as a sweeper. I feel like Fairy giving it Draining Kiss at least would make sense given its pointy mouth.
Gorebyss didn't gain the fairy-type since it was based on a snipe eel (a type of fish). There is nothing about it that screams fairy-type apart from it being pink. Having draining kiss in its learnset makes sense though since its entries mention it draining other beings of their energy, but that's it.
What I would do is use Pelipper to set up rain then switch into a pokemon like a half health ferrothorn with a rindo berry gorbyss with some defensive investment to tank a grass type attack and boost up with shell smash allowing me to start wrecking havok with high powered attacks using.
